  • In today’s video I cover how to change the height of cut, adjust the reel to bedknife, and backlap a Toro Greensmaster 1000. I just recently scalped my lawn in preparation for a lawn leveling project and now it’s time to do some maintenance on my mower to make sure it continues to run smoothly. When I scalped I had to lower my HOC, so the first thing I’m going to do is raise the HOC back to around .55”. After changing the height of cut, I’m going to backlap using 80 grit and 120 grit backlapping compound. After backlapping I’ll adjust the reel to bedknife and test the sharpened reel on a piece of paper.

    Nice pile of sand! Great teaching video. I just spread a pile of manure on my yard for the first time with my wife and 5 kids to add more organic material on top of my basically pure clay soil base. Sand is next after the manure stimulates some fresh health green growth.

    Another great video! Your son's growing fast man! Can't wait to see how fast your yard recovery is with no rain and water restrictions. My yard is just barely filling in since my sand lvl project last month.

    Saving this video for an upcoming GM purchase. In your opinion is a GM1000 a sufficient width for a 6500 sqft yard? I’m torn on 1600 vs 1000.. and the 1600’s are much harder to come by.

    As you have the reel running in reverse and applying compound at the same time, go slower!! As you are applying the compound at that speed it’s just flinging the compound off. What I do is apply the compound then spin in reverse. Then STOP and apply more compound, then go in reverse again. Basically what I’m trying to say is only apply compound when the reel isn’t moving so the compound does fly away

    How many blades on that reel? I’m probably going to buy one with an 8 blade.

    They do make a back lapping reel machine. And using 80 grit then 120 a waste of time. I'm a head mechanic at a golf course and have over 30 reels I work on.

    You changed your HOC after back lapping, correct? Should you not have back lapped first then set HOC?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  Рік тому

      Changing your reel to bed knife shouldn’t have an effect on your HOC adjustment. So in this case I don’t think the order matters much.

    • @nmsauditor1a950
      @nmsauditor1a950 Рік тому

      When you move your bed knife closer to your reel, you are moving it up and away from the turf, effectively changing your HOC. By how much, very little I suppose. I believe each click on the adjuster is 0.007". Three clicks to adjust would be 0.021".
      I like your content, keep up the good work!

    I notice with my reel mower that if the reel to bedknife contact isn't somewhat tight it won't cut paper but when i tighten it does. The reel doesn't spin freely like I've seen in some videos. Is this normal or do I have to backlap?

    • @LawnInsider
      @LawnInsider  Рік тому +1

      It’s normal. In fact, I’ve noticed when I get mine serviced, they always have it tighter with the bed knife than what I am accustomed to. I still usually will loosen it some before mowing. I’ll just adjust it based on the cut quality I’m getting.
