- Hi Folks and welcome to Part 1 of this "how-to" build guide of my first ever Kyosho RC kit! It's the Kyosho Scorpion RC Off Road Racer, 2014 re-release rear-wheel drive (RWD) buggy. In this part, I cover steps 1 to 15 of the build manual which includes the construction of the main aluminium chassis frame, steering and the front and rear suspension components. I also fit the gearbox and an Absima Thrust B-Spec 21 double-turn rebuildable brushed motor.
After years of building and running Tamiya RC kits, I'm really excited to get this Kyosho buggy built up and running.
This fantastic 1/10 RC buggy kit consists of mainly aircraft-quality aluminium components. It promises to be a good running and strong, reliable RC car. I hope you enjoy the Build!
Another massive shout-out to my great friend, Barry of @Barry's RC Dump : / @barrysrcdump3557
...for sending this awesome kit as a gift. Thank you so much, Barry! - Авто та транспорт
Oh that is such a cool chassis... love it! I think a Kyosho chassis with a Tamiya hard body on it would be my ultimate RC concoction. 😎👍
Hi Steve, I think you hit the nail on the head! I wonder if a Subaru Brat hard body could be made to fit? Hmmmm....!!! Thanks for watching, mate. 👍
Funny you say that. I placed my sand scorcher body on my scorpion chassis last night just to see what it looked like. The gears in head started turning 😁
@@baconator_c10 Now that would be a great new take on the Kyosho Bug!!! A Scorpion chassis with a proper, scale hard body would look awesome!
That's a great kit, I finished my kyosho Tomahawk. I didn't go as elaborate as you but you definitely went into detail well. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome, thank you! The Tomahawk looks like a sweet kit, maybe I can get one someday! Thanks for the comment, all the best from Mark...
They really are a treat to put together! All the precision bits and pieces really go together well.
Hi Addam, yeah, gotta agree with that! I'm so happy with this kit, had a little fun with the paintwork and stickers, too! All the best!
Yeah, Mark, you didn't wait around to get started on this! I'm happy you did, I love watching these before a build, it's almost like having done it before when I do get started, which I'm actually really looking forward to. I'm stuck building a 1/32 scale and I just can't wait to get back on tenth scale, ha ha!
Have a great weekend there!
Hi Mads - yep, I couldn't wait to get started on this little beauty! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the comment as always. A 1/32? Wow, I think my old eyes would struggle with that! I look forward to seeing what it is. Wishing you a lovely Sunday, my good friend!
Wow, what a great looking build mate, looks really good quality! Although I'm not that keen on the shock design and the way you fill them, but they looked like they went back together OK. Excellent video as always, can't wait to see part 2👍👍
Thanks a ton, Barry! Yeah, those shocks seemed strange to build after Tamiya CVA's, but as you say, went together OK in the end. Time will tell if the oil stays in! It was a real treat to build this Kyosho, I'm sure it will be a good runner. All finished in Part 2, hope you like the finished buggy with my non-box art paint job. All the best, mate!
Wow Very Beautiful 👌💕 Excellent 💯💯 Video 👌 My friend 💐💕 Big like 95👍💐💕 Thank you 💐💖
Thank you so much 🙂
Hi Mark, looks incredible! Like a Mecanno kit 😎 The quality looks fantastic and I really enjoyed watching you put it together. You seem really impressed by the way it is all coming together. I am eyeing up an Ultima or an Optima for the future. Until then I can enjoy your build 👍🏻🙌🏻
Many thanks, Craig! Yes, Meccanno it is! It was a pure joy and very different to any other build that I've done. Great working with spanners again! Hmmm... Ultima or Optima, now that's a tricky choice! All the best, my friend, enjoy your Sunday!
Lovely kit Mark.. Kyosho quality is awesome love the Legendary series :)
Thanks Pete, it really is! I think you'll like the finished buggy when you see my take on it! Cheers! 👍
This is awesome to watch! I also get a glimpse of how my almost 40 year old Kyosho looked like when it was new :D
So with some regular maintenance you'll be enjoying the Scorpion for many years :)
Have a great weekend my friend!
Many thanks Hubertus - hehe, I think this buggy will easily outlast me!!! Such a well made kit, and if yours is still going after 40 years, that's a great sign of quality! Have a lovely weekend there, too!
@@MarkBryanRC Seeing you assemble such a classic is pure nostalgia to me, it takes me back to when i was young and handsome, hahaha! All those new shiny parts look fantastic and the end result is a great piece of RC history that has 80's vibes all over it! And the handling of those 80's Kyoshos is surprisingly good, even for today's standards!
Last year i gave mine an overhaul. New tires (reproduction), new gearbox and gears, new engine parts and it ran like new again!
@@2stroke4me Haha! Young (and not so handsome) is a distant memory!!! But I agree with you about this buggy, I look forward to finding out about the handling! Cheers!
Looks great Mark! Glad you got a updated version without the diff problem that you used to have to grind some material off the plastic side to fit the bearing on. This things fast with a stock tamiya silver can it's going to fly! Can't wait for you to finish and drive this beauty your going to love it!!
Thanks Steve, yeah, it's so cool that Kyosho actually bother to update their kits! Lucky for me in this instance. I heard it was fast with a silver can, it should love the 21T thrust motor I fitted! All the best, my friend! 👍
Hello Mark! Great video! I am waiting for part 2!!!I'm impatient!
Thanks - part 2 coming Friday! :D
Love that it's a metal kit!
Oh yes, the metal parts make this buggy feel a bit special! Cheers!
Awesome video Mark, i love Kyosho.. Looking forward for your next video👍
Thanks my friend Xavier! I love Kyosho too, thanks too Barry! All will be revealed in the next video, Part 2!!! All the best from Mark...👍
Kyosho’s are a great build
You got that right, James!!!
Quality 👍 thanks for your upload 👍🙏🐈
Thank you my good friend, Cat! Wishing you a lovely weekend! 👍
Good stuff Mark! Great to see you're enjoying the Kyosho build. It's gonna be one awesome looking buggy when it's done! 👍
Thanks Mick! Oh yes I'm loving this buggy, it's now finished and I think it looks awesome! I watched your build video for a few tips, so many thanks for that! All the best, mate! 👍
@@MarkBryanRC I knew you'd be happy with the end result, they do look awesome. Thanks for watching my video mate! Cheers. 👍
@@RCHobbyShed 😁👍👍
Beautiful build, compared to most tamiya kits the quality is just way higher and they are fun to run as well. Cheers from Germany and enjoy!
Thanks very much, Chris! You got that right about the quality and build. I'm sure you are right about how fun it is to run, can't wait to find out! Cheers from England! 👍
Awesome video Mark. I had the same issues on step 5 as you. But after this the build will go straight forward. Looking forward for your next video👍
Hi Dirk, good to hear I am not alone with that problem on step 5! Yes, the rest was a pure pleasure to build. Many thanks for the kind comment, all the best to you my friend!
I just knew you would love this top quality beast Mark. Kyosho build great stuff, I've never needed any spares because they are tough little buggies. They build a decent boat to, out of 60 rcs we have the bettle and the ultima are my favorites. These kyosho kits are hard to find and wish they would make more like Tamiya do. They are more expensive but it's more than worth the money. They handle well and look fantastic, I finished building the big Tamiya knight hauler and I'm building a Scania semi now. The trucks are a long but enjoying build. People say they're too expensive but they are cheap for what you get . This will look great especially with the centre line wheels, bet you can't wait to drive this beast of a buggy. Great video mate and love your work.
Hello, Peter. Well, you know me too well, my friend, you were spot-on! Great to hear how tough it is, I hope mine is still in one piece after many bashes! Yeah, agree that more Kyosho availability would only be a good thing. But glad that I at least got this little beauty, and agree that you do get what you pay for. Wow, building those big rigs must be a long job indeed, so many parts to assemble. The initial cost is high, but I can see that the sheer amount of components that you get justify the price. Too right, I'm itching to drive my new Kyosho, weather and health permitting! Cheers, mate!
Coming together nicely buddy !
Sure is, my friend! Such a pleasure to put together! I hope you like the paint job when you see it, it's not entirely box-art! All the best, cheers!
Really enjoyed that Mark.. It’s a lovely thing isn’t it.. Like you I’ve never built a kyosho before.. it’s something I would like to do one day.. I did build a Mardave Apache back in the day but it’s been Tamiya for me
Thanks Darren. Glad you enjoyed it! Certainly is a lovely buggy and a pleasure to put together, all well machined and the fit and finish is (mostly) fantastic. I'd highly recommend the experience, Darren. Like you, I'm still a Tamiya fan! All the best! 👍
Hi Mark super video this looks an amazing kit and you overcome some rather challenging areas well done there. I really love the metal chassis looks like your putting together a full size buggy in miniature. Looking forward to the next instalment, take care and very best wishes
Awesome, thank you, Peter! Definitely pure quality and a joy to build, despite the little "challenges"!!
Yes, I think if you scaled this up to 1/1 it would make a good full sized buggy! It's all finished and will be revealed in the next video. Cheers for watching and commenting, best wishes to you, too!
Your videos are very well done dude. 👏 I can hear a tinge of excitement in your voice. You should assemble the shocks with the shaft compressed as there's no bladder. 👌
Hiya, Bazza! Thanks for the kind words. Hehe, did that come across? Definitely excited, dude! I can't wait till you see the finished buggy, I really hope you approve of the paint and sticker choices. Thanks for the tip about the shocks! All the best, my good friend!

I'm looking forward to the rest and seeing it running. 👌
@@barrysrcdump3557 Thanks dude, the buggy is finished in Part two, so not long to wait! Cheers, hope you have good weekend. 👍
Great video 👍👍
Thank you very much, Sam! 👍
Nice build
Glad you think so! Cheers! :D
Hi Mark. I had the same issue with the front bar. I found that when I tightened it down, a little bit on each screw at a time to make sure it was level, it sat in place fine. The ridges are soft enough to allow it to fit in those bridges as long as you follow this process. Well done on getting that bearing in place, bloody tight fit lol 👍🏼
Hi Damian and thanks for the interesting comment. Yeah, I was going to try to do as you explained, but thought I might be able to line the notches up better by getting the clamps on first. Good to know that it would have gone on without filing, though! All the best, mate!
Awesome build brother Mark!!!!! Takes me back to when I built my Kyosho Assault. The only thing I didn't like is the friction/press fit rear wheels, that old nitro buggy didn't have reverse but the wheels still came loose unless I really cranked down on the wheel nuts, (no grub screw holding on the wheel hub, it was a tapered fit). All in all she's looking good mate!!! Soon it's body work, waiting to see how/what you did with that. ATB my friend to you & yours!!!!!
Thank you brother Bob! Glad it took you back! Great kits to build indeed. Yeah, I thought it was strange that there is no mechanical fixings for the rear wheels, relying on friction alone seems a weak spot for sure. I am loving this build, as you can probably tell! I hope you like my choice of paint for the body, it's a little different. Same to you too, as always, love and peace, mate!
@@MarkBryanRC I'll have to email you pics of the box for the Assault (the buggy is in no shape for a photo). Love & Peace back at ya Brother, give our best to everyone!!!!
Hi Mark, the individual pieces are really well made. Definitely not a build for beginners. You probably helped anyone putting this chassis together with some of the smaller details. The shocks seem intricate but overall the kit is impressive. Take care
Thanks Paul - yep the kit is full of quality components! And no, I would not recommend this as a first kit! As you know I do like to go into detail with my build videos. I've heard good and bad about the shocks, so we will soon find out. All the best, Bro! 👍
Alright Bill, now this is what you call a proper Screwdriver Challenge 👍
Looks like you might be building more Kyosho kits in the future 😎
Hiya, Charlie! Definitely needs a little finesse with the screwing, mate! If I can get another Kyosho in the future, I certainly will after the experience with this beauty. All the best, Roger! 😎👍👍

@@MarkBryanRC I can feel an Ultima Optima Tomahawk Bug getting a severe wrapping from a Black Belt Jedi Master 🤔
Hi Mark, hope you’re keeping well. That Kyosho build is looking good. Some tricky little steps in the build to watch out for too. But, the eagle eye in you soon noticed the small error and corrected it, before getting too far in the build. That’s all the challenge of building these great models, brings that engineer in you, out to the world. Love the building of these, the challenge and problem solving. Great video my good friend, looking forward to part 2. Take care, keep well and all the very best to you and the family. 😉😊😉
Hi John, many thanks for the comment and kind words! Yes, this kit is pure quality, but still a couple of little issues to look out for. Even after a lot of experience building, it's still easy to make a mistake! I agree, building is a pleasure of mine and a little challenge here and there adds to the joy of building. All finished in part 2, I hope you like the finished buggy! Take care and best wishes to you, too!
Great
Thank you!
Great instructions, but I'm probably more into seeing them in action - so I am looking forward to that 😁
You and me both! Building is fun, but driving them is better! Thank you so much for watching!
Hiya matey. Really enjoyable to watch, especially as I've just got to that exact step of the build of my Turbo Scorpion. It was reassuring to see that you had some of the same issues that I came across. I didn't think of filing down the sides of that bar at the front where the metal clamp bits go round. I just mashed them on with a mole grip. They are not quite exactly lined up with the mark on the clamp but hopefully near enough. Also I was concerned that there is a little gap between them and the chassis but you have got the same gap. One thing I did have issues with was the pre assembled diff. It was really rough to turn and I had a right old palaver to sort it out which you will see when my video comes out. I'm going to wait until I've finished the car so I can put a bit of run footage at the start and end like I did with the Volvo Hauler build. Hey we made it to 3 pubs last night which was good. Hope you're having a good weekend so far. The sun keeps peeping out so I'm wondering whether to go out with some RC's or keep building the Scorpion. Anyway great build vid mate. Best wishes to you 😁
Hi Pete. How strange that you got to the same point as me?!?! Good to know it wasn't just me with those issues. Yeah, I think it's OK if the front bar isn't exactly lined up, there is a fair bit of play in the front suspension, anyway! My diff was fine, I'm interested to see what was going on with yours! Good idea about putting some run footage with the build, all adds to the interest. Wow, 3 pubs in one night? Sounds like a whale of a time! Yeah, enjoying a very lazy weekend with absolutely no RCing for a change! Thanks for the chat and always best wishes to you my good friend!
Hi Mark, well that was thoroughly engrossing. It looks like it took up every ounce of your RC experience in putting this one together. The quality though from straight out of the box is amazing - is it actually ALL metal or what ? In a way Kyosho have kinda shot themselves in the foot ( in a good way ) in that regarding upgrades and hop-ups......there is nowhere to go. Very, very impressive kit. In some ways it reminds me of the Tamiya Sand Scorcher / Rough Rider chassis with all this metal, but probably even more impressive than those. I suppose both do come from the same era. Very much looking to part 2 of this build Mark. Cant wait. Have a great weekend pal...👍🏻🙂😁👍🏻.
Hello my good friend! Certainly needed a bit of thought and careful spanner work to build correctly. As I mentioned, I made a couple of rookie mistakes but thankfully noticed straight away. Yes, it is essentially all metal, the chassis sits on it's wheels with no plastic parts involved! I love the fact that Kyosho have continually upgraded the kit over the years, ironing out any little issues, so no need for upgrades. The buggy gets finished in the next video and I can't wait for you to see the finished item, I'm so happy with the results! All good here, pal, hope your Sunday is going well!
Great video Mark. It is a Polar opposite to the Tamiya kits of that time with all the alloy parts. Hope you have fun running it
Thanks very much, Ian. You got that right, this has opened my eyes a little! Everything fits like a glove. Oh yes, I'm so looking forward to that first run, all the best my friend! 👍
Hi Mark, really great video, I’m glad you are building this before me, if I ever get one….hint hint RC Elf 🧝♀️ lol 😂
I’m a bit like Carmine, i don’t think I will ever get a Kyosho buggy….. but I have 4 Kyosho Ford RS200’s , 1/10 scale nitro on road rally cars, i even got the very first one in the Province, N I , Belfast in the late 80s after reading the reviews of them in the rc magazines, best of all is the carburettor on them, it only has the main needle 🪡 and not the bottom and top end needles, so it’s really easy to get it set up very easily.
Any how, I’m diversing? , awesome build video Mark. Looking forward to seeing the next video. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Hiya Mikey! Thanks for the great comment as always. Hehe, yes, it's a pure joy to put something this well engineered together. You would love it I'm sure. Ohhh, RS200's?!?!?! Lovely cars - good to know they are easy to set up, as that's what puts me off nitro engines! This buggy gets finished in the next video, I think you will enjoy the final result, as I sure do! Cheers, mate!
Verry nice, i had the base version of this as a kid and all the screws in the metal are a little bit of a headache, i will definetly use loctide when i build up my scorpion.
Hello, Schutt - yes, the screws are a bit of a pain, I also used a little Loctite on all the screws that went into metal, it doesn't say to use it in the manual, but just to be safe! It was a great build. Thanks for the comment!
Hi, Mark - well, what a fascinating video! It's so different from building a Tamiya. The clear polycarbonate shock absorber gaskets are evil - why on earth did they make them clear? And those rear suspension arms are beautiful castings - they're so lovely to behold that it seems a shame to subject them to the rigours of life bolted to the back of an off road buggy!
Still, it's very interesting to watch the build and to see the potential pitfalls, and how adroitly you avoid them : )
Hello my good friend Del, and thanks for another (always) thoughtful and supportive comment. Yeah, those bloody gaskets! Arrrggghhh!!! They are almost invisible! Oh, it's even better than that as far as the suspension arms are concerned, they are FORGED from aircraft quality aluminium! I know that you know how much stronger forgings are than castings! How cool is that?!?!?! Hope you are enjoying a peaceful Sunday, mate!
@@MarkBryanRC Really? My goodness - I bet the guys over at Tamiya weren't too pleased when Kyosho products first came on the market.
I've been applying stickers to a Tamiya body today, and giving myself stern talkings-to every time I was tempted to throw in the towel.
"Mark would have the patience to do it properly!", I'd admonish myself.
@@Del350K4 Too right, Del! Oh, thanks for the confidence, I must admit, I never give in! Keep going, mate, I know you can do it!
@@MarkBryanRC Thanks, Mark.
I think the only thing that I didn’t like about this kit was the O rings on the dampers. The front end seemed to give me a time getting it lined up properly. Everything else was really nice with a high quality feel . Turned around and got the Ultima next .
Hi Eric, yeah, it seems from the comments that those O rings are a common cause for concern. But I agree with you, the rest of the kit is real quality. Ooooh, an Ultima?!?!?! Lovely! :O)
I used lock tight on most screws
Oh, yes, so did I, I forgot to mention that!!! :D
How precise do I need to be on centering the black steering arm? Mine's about a millimeter out - with the alighnment mark on one side in line with the edge of the aluminium and on the other side away from it.
Being only a mm out should be fine, You will be able to centre up with your trim on the transmitter! :)
Hi Mark, another great video, I,ll keep an eye open for you running this in Warley Woods when I,m passing !
Hi SB - thanks for the kind comment - woah, you must be very close to me!!! All the best!

@@MarkBryanRC Hi Mark, Have you run the Scorpion yet, just wondering what you thought of the Abisma motor.
@@steveb9755 Hi Steve, not yet, I'm gonna try and get a first run in, next week! Fingers crossed it goes well!
Mi Mark, and now how do you feel with Kyosho? Less models than Tamiya and perhaps not so nice for the eyes, but quality and tech??? Ciao, Nanni
Hi Nanni! Oh, I love this Kyosho. Yes, less models than Tamiya, and the designs are definitely more basic, but the finished buggy looks so nice! The quality and tech are second-to-none. Ciao!
My shocks ended up leaking.
I changed them over to a set off of a (take off ) Tamiya cc01 shocks... Which fit .. and work.. and haven't leaked yet. .. the rubber rings in the kyosho ones expanded making them useless..
Hi and thanks very much for the warning! I'll definitely look out for a problem there, and now I know a good fix! Cheers!

Thank You! :D
The hardest bit of the build is those shock seals....
Definitely!!! Cheers for the comment! :D
""many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."
🔥👍
Very true, my friend!
My rear Axle keeps coming out of place like it's too short or sum
I think it would be a good 💡 to take out both of the rear axles and check them side by side to see if they are the same length. If one is shorter than the other then obviously there is a problem with the wheel axles! Best wishes from Mark.
Is it better/more enjoyable than building a Tamiya
Hi Martin. Hmmm, difficult question. The engineer in me really enjoyed the Kyosho build. But I have also enjoyed so many Tamiya builds, they generally go together more precisely, not so much chance of error. Horses for courses, as they say! But I did like working with mainly metal parts for a change, the quality shines through!
@@MarkBryanRC thanks
