Palomar Knot - Quick Tutorial on How to Tie This Strong Knot

  • The Palomar Knot is one of the most popular knots among both freshwater and saltwater anglers given it's strong hold and the fact that it can be tied very quickly.
Overall, the Palomar knot provides a very strong connection (even winning many knot strength contests) while being easier to tie than many of the other popular knots.
My only issue with the Palomar knot is the fact that it is more difficult to use when tying to artificial lures... especially plugs with multiple sets of treble hooks. The added difficulty when tying it to lures is that part of the sequence requires the lure to pass through a loop you create in the line. This is a non-issue for plain hooks, but becomes difficult when using large plugs.
Regardless, the Palomar knot is a must-know for both saltwater and freshwater fisherman.
We hope you enjoy this training video. Leave a comment below if you have any questions.
If you're a saltwater angler, be sure to check out our core website because it has a ton of awesome fishing videos covering all aspects of saltwater fishing... here's a direct link - www.saltstrong.com.

That’s wholesome and made me emotional.
I too will go through this one day as my father hasn’t been around since I was 3 and I just turned 25.
your kids might not realise how special those moments are for a very long time but one day they’ll look back at those moments with joy and laughter.
Take care of yourself and enjoy fishing with the kiddos!

Man with no father here. Yesterday I went fishing . It was a mess. Had half my rod go into the water and was laughed at by the person I went with and then later I had a heavy fish break my knot. Definitely will be teaching my kids when that time comes.

Palomar is a fantastic knot. I am also returning to fishing. Started back this spring. For good catfish Id say go to a shollow weedy/woody lake. They are going nuts lately with all the rain first thing in the morning they are all over the lake nearby beating up everything. I only know the basics for catfishing but I am also interested in honing the skill myself. Add me and we can share knowledge as we learn.

FWIW, I caught a 9’2” Lemon shark on this knot using 40lb tackle and Penn 4/0 Reel. One of the Strongest Knots I’ve ever used. Till this day, I’ve had absolutely 100% success rate with this knot. For Braid to mono...the FG knot is awesome, and for about 95% of all other situations the UNI knot can be used. Those 3 knots are my favorites. TIGHT LINES boyz!

The FG’s good but if you haven’t already try the triple surgeons knot for braid to leader. Its quick, easy, and the knot is tiny and extremely strong. Fits through tight rod tip guides without ever catching. I fish from a kayak and quick easy small and strong are what I prefer.

I use a Palomar knot day in & dy out. Small eye holes won't fit a loop--- So, simply put the line thru it, then put the line back through it and voila: you get the same loop in the end, without trying to squeeze a loop thru a small eye.

  • @Doug.L

Great knot, I have used this several years for catching large tuna. My setup typically is 40#-80# braid backing with 20-60# flouro leader, terminal tackle is usually a Gama ringed hd live bait hook or hd nautilus. Couple important mentions for this knot that I have found useful:
    1) Make sure that while you are cinching down the two lines that wrap your terminal tackle they run parallel the entire length around the iron, and do not cross making an "X". This can be avoided by snugging your fingers up to the two lines holding them in place. Don't let go, you can figure out which way the hook will travel if it slips...
    2) It is better to not pinch the line (feed through and then feed back) as the pinch ends up inside the knot or on the leader.
    3) If you have lots of leader, doing this over a large iron isn't an issue, tagging the tail end just leaves much more waste.
    4) Heavier line I leave a very small amount more tail. Very rare, or I wouldn't still be using it, but I have seen this knot slip.

I stopped using snap-swivels years ago, but recently purchased some inexpensive sonars & remembering their action & knowing that the knot hole is punched directly through the metal rather than a rounded screw eye, I was worried about using a loop knot for fear of weakening the (braided)line or outright cutting through it. Instead I purchased some snap-swivels & to get the best action, rather than purchasing the tried & true brass safety pin style, I purchased the 'barrel swivel with interlock snap'. It has a rounded snap rather than a semi-pointed one! I know that we're talking about knots, but I'm hoping to get some comments from your knowledgeable followers or yourself??
I also loved your list of best & worst knots for all uses & why (pro's & con's). It was very detailed & prior to reading that, I was starting to have my doubts about the Palomar Knot that I've come to love & suggest to relatives, until I got to 'braided directly to swivels, lures, hooks'. Then I felt much better, as it tested best in that category which is what I use! Thanks for all the testing! I, for one, really appreciated your thoroughness!

Can I tie a safety knot of any kind to the tag end?

It's easy to do this "backwards". Watch closely. He sent the line through from the barb side, in the same plane as the hook. As he made the overhand knot the hook turned 90 degrees, but the line didn't, then it turned another 90 degrees so that the barb is now on the opposite side from where it started, and then he takes the loop over the hook from the barb side. This happens because the doubled end of the line starts in the same plane as the hook, switches to a plane at right angles to that, then switches back to to a the plane of the hook, and this somehow reverses the direction of the hook.
At this point, the loop can go over the barb by leaving the down side of the loop down, or by taking the up side and flipping it over before it goes over the barb.
I don't know if any of this matters, though, because I've seen other people do it differently.

@@Saltstrong I don't know if doing it backwards matters. Maybe its just that you have to loop over the end on the same side as you first pushed through the eye. However, on the Double Palomar, if you do it backwards you can't pull down the knot. You'll always wind up with a loop you can't get rid of.

I use chapstick to moisten knot. Slips easily. Almost always use Palomar

Good for braid, so it doesn’t sneak threw the eye of the hook and loose your fish ! .... haven’t used it years

Good when the eye is big enough. What about smaller hooks that wont fit a double line?

It's easier just to run the end through the eye, then back out again to have your loop. No pinching necessary.

This knot tested on the machine at the fishing museum in south Florida broke at 50% of line test!
The worlds fair knot broke above 100% of stated line strength.
Keep in mind actual line strength is higher then stated line strength.

There must have been some sort of issue with the line if the palomar knot broke at such a low rate... it's not the best knot, but it's certainly not a weak one. Here's a test of the Palomar vs. the World's Fair knot that you may find interesting: ua-cam.com/video/kekqJpQiAuc/v-deo.html

Great for lures and swivels but not for hooks. Snelling that hook would improve angle of attack. As it is it can turn in eye.

Thanks for the video. I've seen others do it and they leave the loop on the bottom, while you pulled the loop on top. Does it make a difference?

how do you tighten it on thinner line without stretching the line and making it wavy by the knot?
