The soup is seaweed egg drop soup, very common soup in China, seaweed can be confused with lavender by very very terrible machine translation because it literally translates to “purple vegetable/plant” and I guess lavender is purple...

But for the owners it's much less of a hassle to enforce best before dates than it is to go to court because of some bullshit.
My Chinese wife says you eat a little pickled vegetables with each bite of the rice dish for flavor. Also the spicy sauce generally goes on the seaweed in most Chinese meals the pickled vegetables (xian cai) pronounced "shan tie" are eaten with each bite. Very common.
... I’m pretty sure the pickled vegetables (without the adjectives) would be pronounced (shier tsai... kinda. It’s really hard to get the Chinese pronunciation in English). In Chinese pinyin, it would be spelled (xue cai). I have no idea what the (Shan tie) is supposed to be, but yeah. Also, yes the (xue cai) is generally called (xian cai), it’s just that this specific kind of pickled vegetables is called (xue cai), Just to let you know.
@@flufpolitie Chinese here, I'm sure her wife knows her Chinese well but it's hard to communicate sound with letters, that's why there are things like IPA and Pinyin. The soup is made with shreds of nori seaweed (same species used in sushi rolls) and beaten eggs, a very common dish because both ingredients are cheap and common pantry items. The pickle is indeed mustard green (Brassica juncea var. crispifolia) cured in salt and spices. I am a little bothered by the presentation because it is usually finely chopped before serving, but that form probably won't last four years in a bag so there's that. A lot of these items are acquired tastes and you have handled yourself pretty well :)

The soup's probably a classic chicken and seaweed egg drop soup. The kelp's properly translated as 'kelp ribbons', and you're right. It's an acquired taste - I hate the stuff myself, and drown it in hot sauce before chewing on it. The pickled veg is most likely Chinese Mustard in a spicy vinegar marinade. Good stuff. In practice, I suspect they'd eat the kelp and tuna together, and also eat the pickled bits while having the entree just like we nibble a pickle with a sandwich. You are correct that some of it like the soup must be an acquired taste.
Hey Steve! The 雪菜 is a mustard green and the soup is 蛋花湯 egg drop soup, it's pretty good fresh but I guess you can't expect much out of 2 year expired stuff, huh?
You sure slap that tuna good. The soup is actually seaweed egg soup, gold tuna, not white, and you are correct, snow veggies is actually pickled bitter veggies (usually brown mustard). Chinese can be creepy when translated, especially in menus.
I laughed so hard at when he said “it even comes with its own tray”. The precedes to say the classic “alright lets get this on to a tray” anyway. So funny I haven’t smiled this much at a UA-cam channel in years.
Wow a very interesting meal. A very healthy and well balanced looking meal. I agree with you on kelp, I can't handle the seaweeds. And won't do the tuna either. Thanks for the great review Steve.
Kahlest Enoch I was laughing my ass off when he tried that kelp. I lived in Japan a couple decades ago and their pickled kelp was top notch. But its not really palatable for western audiences. I remember gagging the first time I tried and it was produced by a very traditional company. Wasnt cheap either so I can only imagine how a chinese MRE one would taste. Btw its not that chinese ones are bad, far from it, but they are a lot more fibrous and strong tasting than the japanese ones for sure.
Steve u always come through for me at the end of a long stressful day! I kick back put on one of ur videos and pretty soon I'm laughing and forget all about the monstrosities of the day. Plus ur easy on the eyes!!!😙😉
I ate an American spinach fettuccine MRE today. It was really mediocre. The MREs from other nations always look so enticing- that or you just make everything sound delicious. This chinese ration is an exception though.
I do think he may be exaggerating since it's hard to describe food correctly since your image always ends out exaggerated, not with the subtle flavors he/she may have been describing.
I would have mixed everything together - entree, tuna, vegies, sauce and the reconstituted soup to remoisten the rice and eaten it that way, but that's just me.

This guy's the only good youtuber left on this platform
he's an honest, down to earth guy and in the man's own words, he's _Nice._
Keep up the amazing work my guy, I really appreciate it
You should expand your horizons, there are plenty of good people on UA-cam. 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve always loved the way these Chinese rations look! Thanks for another video Steve!
Hey DaddyTitoplz! I really think this one had a very pleasing aesthetic - they have a PLA Navy one similar in appearance that I will share soon (an easy shoot too only like 5 components). But PLA has some really intriguing rations! Thanks for checking this one out an see ya on the next one Tito!
i've watched your videos for a few days now and i have to say you are the perfect cross between reviewbrah and demoranch
4:59 “Give that tuna a good slap!” Priceless! Lol
The smack was for the fan girls hehe
Erin Wright i thought the same thing! 😂
Yaas! 😋
Hey I'm a dude, but I want some of that too...
Silent Lucidity ASMR Oh please. It's like, the future man.
Silent Lucidity ASMR grow up, it's a joke.
In practice, I suspect they'd eat the kelp and tuna together, and also eat the pickled bits while having the entree just like we nibble a pickle with a sandwich. You are correct that some of it like the soup must be an acquired taste.
Seaweed and egg soup is a pretty common dish in China, those kelp and pickled veggies are also nutritious
2:26....Nominated for “Steve’s best moments” in MRE review history.
Welcome back my friend. You have a cast iron stomach.
Forged Steel
Großer Maik And antibodies made straight from 1800's beef stew !
Great one Steve. Yet another first look ration. Great to see what the men and women in the air have.
if you threw in all the other stuff into the rice pouch, I could see it being a very fast and convenient meal that's also tasty.
"Wash it down with some goop soup." - poetic
"dramatization" ah a new era in steve1989 video production! hahah I LMAO'd
That kelp may seem exotic for westerners, but for many Chinese people its a childhood comfort food.
It's a comfort food if you have any Asian blood. I'm Japanese-Canadian and it's one of my favorite things
Hey Steve! The 雪菜 is a mustard green and the soup is 蛋花湯 egg drop soup, it's pretty good fresh but I guess you can't expect much out of 2 year expired stuff, huh?
Usually MRE should last longer than 5 years at least, so....
This guy literally eats food that is 50 years old and claims it still tastes good. This is just bad Chinese food. Dont take it to personal.
Burgtastic he ate canned beef from the Boar war 120 years ago.
@@burgtastic8377 commies survive also without food (Dprk, Venezuela, Estonia etc)
@@briandenison2325 he ate a hardtack from civil war
Was about to get my homework out on a plate, then I saw this. Nice!
Jimmyjohns Official tray*
TheJuiceGoose please forgive me
Jimmy it up
As a Chinese, I began to swallow saliva at the moment when you squeezed out kelp silk. Kelp silk with spicy flavor is very delicious
nice, while I'm eating dinner
timing couldn't have been any better!
Oof Steve pulling
Amanda Morgan lov you Steve!
Amanda Morgan invite us to the wedding
He's incredibly dreamy. Incredibly.
Kayley Hoyt maybe you'd let him"get you out on a tray"
the way he says "alright, lets get this out onto a tray...." sheer joy and stimulation for me.
Steve with 100 year old beef: "Nice!"
Steve with seaweed people have been eating for 40,000 years: "oh no this is not my thing"
Every time I watch your reviews I am reminded of ChrisFix. You guys are probably running the best channels that are so detailed and informative.
5:00 "Give that tuna a good slap" - that's got to be some kind of euphemism
I refuse to believe it. He's always so mannerly! I chose to believe he's not that crass. 🤨
I would have mixed everything together - entree, tuna, vegies, sauce and the reconstituted soup to remoisten the rice and eaten it that way, but that's just me.
You are an incredible and wonderful man, thank you for bringing so much joy to the world cheer up!
Going through Steve withdrawl right now.
Better get that on a tray.
Cool.
Don't desecrate the mantra. It's "Let's get this out on to a tray... NICE!"
Get that tray onto a tray.
Cool, lets nice this on a tray. Steve is awesome! We are all weirdos but I really enjoy the folks that don't try to hide it and I mean that in a good way. Nice! Now lets burn a 60 year old cigarette that Steve was saving in the humidor for us.
KJB ok
Great that you know and can admit your palate isn't adjusted to what other cultures may like. Others would just say it tastes horrible.
Don't get me wrong, it may actually BE horrible, but that self-awareness is truly refreshing to hear.
7:45 That's "spicy pickled vegetable" according to my Chinese friend
You're harboring a spy!
I think u will find it’s pickled mustard greens.
Can confirm
辣味雪菜 means literally
Spicy flavoured pickled vegetable
Pickled mustard greens at that, and my personal favorite pickled vegetable
