Fishballs are extremely popular throughout all of Asia as a form of comfort food. I understand that they may come off as strange and processed (they usually are) to someone who didn't grow up with them, but to an Indonesian soldier, they would make for a good morale boost.
I find it very interesting how North American rations have so many snack and dessert type items, whereas a lot of the international ones are much more focused on simple, good quality main dishes.
It's not the best idea to pull all of your eggs into one basket, so to speak. Under duress, you're supposed to eat what you can when you can. Having all of your calories in one dish of wet food that you can't just whip out little portions of throughout the day would cause many, if not most of the soldiers on front lines to just go hungry most of the time.
The person/team who designed that spork needs an award. Brilliant. Indonesians seem like they're treating their boys right. I might buy this if this was sold in stores. It mad my mouth water. I'm glad I found your channel. What's really spectacular about all of these soldier rations that you go through(and I think it would give you more content to cover) is the amount of thought involved by the teams of dieticians and food chemists. Not forgetting to mention the work of production that produce them. There is also some psychology involved. Great job so far. Good luck with your channel.

For sure, you can find some really good Indonesian restaurants down here. The flavours are a lot more subtle than most Asian cuisines I've tried but well worth the effort to find a legit restaurant run by an Indo expat.
I remember having some delicious Indonesian food in Amsterdam, fairly shocked that the rations don't look too far off from the actual sit-down dinner I had.

I've noticed Asian cuisine shows a general mastery of the use of spices to create flavor. In the West we often rely too heavily on salt and fat to get that savory effect in our food. Well done, Indonesia.
My Grandpa is Indonesian and he always cooked amazing food 😋 this was nice to see Kecap is actually a dark sweet soya sauce it's thick so I suppose it is put into the dish moderately but it's tasty over fried rice with Chinese sausage and veggies 😋 and dried onions!

@@DysonH i get mine from Indonesian neighbours and the toko, ethnic shops. The restaurants in my region are better due to the high concentration of East Indies inhabitants. The street i live in had mostly East Indies inhabitants it is now slowly getting mixed. But still a very ethnically diverse region.
There's no breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Indonesian dishes generally speaking. You dig in whatever the menu is. Exceptions include some street food like fried rice, terang bulan, and martabak which food vendors usually sell at night. For the 'minsus' drink, I think it's derived from 'minuman susu', literally means 'milk drink'
Hi I'm from Indonesia, and I like this video about Reviewing our Indonesian Soldier MRE, bit hilarious but I love it, and for your information. I think that MiNSUS drinks are actually "Bandrek","Bajigur", and "Jamu" an traditional Indonesian Hot/Warm spices drinks and might think that MiNSUS are stand for "MiNUMAN SUSU" (?)
karpot oh thanks, my Thought was Coffee/Bandrek/Bajigur/Jamu/Enegry Drinks mix with Milk...hehe kinda everyday usual mix tho but better to serve it Hot. (except energy drinks)
Enertabs seem to be very similar to a Philippine cookie/snack called polvoron. Made with dried condensed milk and a variety of flavorings. Gives you good energy, and a lot of calories.
Tbf this is what we Indonesian usually eat for a day, and even then this is still lacking to my Indonesian standard, we usually have 3 main dish with a slab of rice as the main dishes bedding

Yum chicken kecap (sweet soy sauce) in nasi (fried rice). I lived 10 years in the Netherlands, your former colonial oppressors, so I can figure out the food names.
@Rykiel Toh Didn't know that. Was the colonial oppressor directed at me? I'm British so we are former colonial oppressors too, but of a lot more of the world than the Dutch.
i think that last drink was pop ice, so we indonesian have this kind of drinks that literally taste like a milky liquid birthday cake. so yeah, we're wierd
It's been almost 40 years since I've gotten high, but I could easily imagine a scenario for my "bucket-list" of toking up and having a variety of US and foreign MRE's to explore when the "munchies" would kick in!
Iv been likeing all the Asian MREs with the rice. I'm from south Louisiana and we eat a lot of rice so it would be nice if the US MREs did some with the rice
As an Asian, I think that they have done a great job based on his observations. The sautéed beef looks and sounds like the iconic, beef that I know and even now, to achieve that cook on the fish balls is astonishing.

My mouth is watering, It's been 4 years since I lived in Thailand, I miss southeast Asian food.
asian have rich spices in their meal
Thailand is still south east asia 😏
The food in Thailand 😍😍😍😍 soooooo good and so affordable! All the fresh seafood and yummy curry and fresh fruit (mangoes!!!!)
I'm hungry now...
Chicken satay and the chili and pork with lime and rice
Ahhhhh I miss Bangkok.....
But thailand is south east asia 👁👄👁
Thank you Steve. That Indonesian food looks so good.
I think the minkal was like an energy+calorie drink, we have a popular product just like those. It's basically drinkable cereal
I wouldn't say drinkable cereal, more like instant cereal made in a cup
@@brrrrrr yea I guess normal cereal is drinkable if you try hard enough
"you never know what you're gonna get with these minkals" ..best channel on UA-cam. Steve is the man!
"Oh god...it's crunchy!" Crunchy is usually a good thing except when it comes to beverages.
it's kinda like an oat drink, definitely crunchy in a good way
It's a ceral drink! It translates to milk+chocolate+ceral!
It's awesome
Indonesian and rice. two things that can't be separated

The food: "Nasi ayam kecap"
Also the food: *looks like curry*
Me, an Indonesian: *confused unga bunga*
When I saw that chicken I thought the same, where's the sauce at? Be willing to get it has a hint of curry as well.
"The Indonesians do it right, they have Army mochachino!"
I am from Indonesia and you are pretty accurate in the food descriptions.
Gabriel Kwong what's the name of that beverage though? it looks really interesting
minkal is a milk drink with cereal .
Is Gabriel a popular name in Indonesia ?
I think the bar is brem, but in Bali, brem is an alcohol drink
*Gabriel Gianni* Not sure. But Kwong sounds Chinese and Indonesians from Chinese descent often give their children European names.

There's no breakfast, lunch, and dinner in Indonesian dishes generally speaking. You dig in whatever the menu is. Exceptions include some street food like fried rice, terang bulan, and martabak which food vendors usually sell at night.
For the 'minsus' drink, I think it's derived from 'minuman susu', literally means 'milk drink'
best mre ive seen yet!
Hi I'm from Indonesia,
and I like this video about Reviewing our Indonesian Soldier MRE, bit hilarious but I love it, and for your information.
I think that MiNSUS drinks are actually "Bandrek","Bajigur", and "Jamu" an traditional Indonesian Hot/Warm spices drinks
and might think that MiNSUS are stand for "MiNUMAN SUSU" (?)
CostumWhite Studio
Minsus = Minuman khuSus.
karpot oh thanks, my Thought was Coffee/Bandrek/Bajigur/Jamu/Enegry Drinks mix with Milk...hehe

dat feel when MRE looks more delicious than what you usually eat...
Go buy some rice and sauce then. Pretty simple
@@jhaz89 u forgot the chicken
Tbf this is what we Indonesian usually eat for a day, and even then this is still lacking to my Indonesian standard, we usually have 3 main dish with a slab of rice as the main dishes bedding

This guy seems so friendly. I kind of wish maybe everyone would be like that. Then all the militaries around the world just just hang out and swap MREs and be friends. It'd be cool.
Hyyy... Im from indonesia... I am very proud of you reviewing Indonesian fast food, very much military food in our country, Indonesia and very healthy and rich in spices.
I can imagine this guy enjoys his rations if he ever go to war. Hmm incredible, this is savory and not to salty.. properly cooked and soft.. oh god.. oh wow
I love your hair man, it's pretty.... nice!
nice. no candy, gum, crap, shit and stuff. just food!
The indonesian army gonna fight instead opening packages all day.

Gum is useful for giving the soldiers' teeth a little cleaning when they can't spare the time to brush. Helps even when you can brush
Abraham Im thank you I for one think the addition of candies and gums and all the little things helps boost morale after all
Simple and simple
I think I like it more when you're enjoying it and actually gushing over the food, than when you're choking down half-rotten 100 year old death vomit.
I love this fucking comment

right?? i expected it to be brownish in color
I expected it to look like sate ayam....

As an Asian, I think that they have done a great job based on his observations. The sautéed beef looks and sounds like the iconic, beef that I know and even now, to achieve that cook on the fish balls is astonishing.
Those drink names sound like spaceships or rockets.
The names are actually acronyms for what type of drinks they are. For example, MINSUS 1, which stands for MINuman SUSu (Milk Drink) Type 1.
lol r8
Spot on. The names are portmanteaux. Common in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and so on.
yes true haHAHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Minsus drink is abbrev Minuman Khusus ( Translated as Special Drink) for Soldier

And don't cook it the wrong way as it brings great dishonor.
I think of all the rations you have shown, this one is the most visually appealing, huge portions, definitely on the heavy side, 12 lbs for 3 days is a lot
