The 2x isn’t a “type” of clear. That’s just their marketing verbiage saying it provides 2 times the spray coverage with the tip that’s on the can compared to a regular can. If you look at it on the can, it’s trademarked and a marketing tool basically. The SprayMax clear is a 2 step clear and about the best clear coat in a can hands down.
Exactly. This video makes no sense. He's comparing a real 2K product to..nothing. Of course 2K is going to be better than Rustoleum, lol. No reason anyone should be using Rustoleum products on actual cars, anyway..
From what I learned the 2x is 1K but have the capacity to coat 2x times that’s why is 2X
2x just means 2 times the coverage over a typical spray bomb. 2x is just normal spray paint that alot of people think is special like 2k but it's not.

For further clarification for people learning out there:
2K means any product that is activated with a hardener/catalyst. These products will dry as the solvent evaporates, then cure. "2-component".
1K is a product that can be reflowed, and does not have a hardener/catalyst. They will only dry as their solvent evaporates.
2X is just some brand naming nonsense. It has no relevance to actual refinishing.
You want 2K for any final topcoat, or surfacing build. Only your conversion coats and intermediate basecoats should be 1K. Others CAN be. But they shouldn't.
WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! If the instructions say “repaint within 1 Hour OR 24/36 Hours”. THEY REALLY MEAN IT! If you repaint in say 12 or 18 hours, the damn paint will BUBBLE UP, ruining your whole paint job and requiring you to start over!!! I DO usually read instructions, but they have made the text font size so damn small on these cans now that I can’t even read the instructions with my reading glasses! You need a magnifying glass! That is just WRONG because it means you also can’t read any safety instructions! This is product misinformation because this subtle fact which applies only to some of these spray paints needs to have a great big separate WARNING label about this nefarious “feature”. This is an area where the consumer protection agency needs to lay down some law. Only a stupid manufacture would make the text so small, but as Ron White says, “You can’t fix stupid”, and so we have to legislate more rules, even though I’m against over regulation.

The difference between the two paints is that the 2x means twice the coverage and the 2k is two component paint which is the equivalent to body shop grade paint.
I finished a headlight restoration with the 2X Clear and it didn’t look good, this comparison showed me exactly why.
2x shouldn't be used on actual cars. Rustoleum products are just for cheap household jobs or model cars. 2K only for real cars.

The 2X acrylic might crack from heat. Acrylic cracks. The wrinkling from the acrylic is from the acetone in the 2X clear. You didn't shake it enough. Need to bleed the excess acetone out of a new can before use.
Careful putting spray cans in "hot" water. I've had them end up swelling almost to the point of bursting. I'd suggest using warm water and or don't let them sit too long.
Wear pants with pockets and put them in and walk around and do some of your prep work for 30 minutes with it still in your pocket and that'll do the job.
Aha, so the freezer will prolong the useful life of that 2 part can process. Good to know because in my hobby, you never use the whole can. And many have said the can didn't work on the 2nd try. So now we'll see how the wife reacts to spray paint in the freezer. :)
Also, yes, that was another idea I was thinking before you said it. You would want to buy the 2K clear in bundles to save money.
Yes it saves a lot of money buying in bulk but you can get 1 can for $20 on eBay or Amazon
looks like the 2X reacted with the surface for a wrinkle finish... probably need to paint directly after or much later after...

2k is the obvious winner and prepwork is the key to a good finish.
Does Rustoleum 2x White High Gloss work with 2k clear? And if so how long should I wait before spraying clear on it so it doesn't ruin the paint?

Don’t use rastoleum 2x clear. I just sprayed the roof of my truck with black rastoleum paint and used 2x clear coat also made by rastoleum and everything wrinkled up. Whole day masking primering and painting went to sh*t Thanks to rastoleum!! It even says on the can that you can use it with any other non rastoleum paint which I should’ve done. Something wrong with their formula if it wrinkled with their own paint! Never again!
How long did you wait to clear the black?
@@phildelsol97 On the spray can said to apply clear coat in 20 min intervals . First coat came out Ok, I waited 20 min and started 2nd coat and everything got ruined.
@@phildelsol97I mean you could try rastoleum 2x you may have better results than me, but if you don’t want to risk it go with 2K instead. It’s $25 but well worth. Good luck!
I have had the same outcome from Rustoleum. Immediately made a life long enemy out of me.
All clear coat requires wet sanding afterwards. You can easily make the 2X look great, now I have no clue how it would hold up in the environment in extreme weather conditions.. I certainly wouldn't trust anything other than a 2K on an actual car. I use the 2X on model cars and it does the job, fine. Real cars, no.. I would never use a Rustoleum product on any vehicle.

The only thing the rust-oleum might work on long term is like wall art thats inside, protected and out of the sun/elements. It's strictly a super low consumer "diy homeowner" grade. 💯👌

I recently started painting parts with 2x and was so mad at that wrinkling thing it happened alot.
You can avoid that by how you spray it (one very light tack coat, then a couple "Wet" coats on top) but all clear is going to have a slight bit of orange peel, regardless. Wet sanding and cutting/polishing will remove it, even on the 2x. Never use a cheap Rustoleum product on actual cars, though.. that stuff is for household items or model cars. 2K only for real cars or motorcycles, etc. It's much harder and will withstand against rock chips, etc. EDIT: I think the wrinkling was more-so a reaction to the paint, not orange peel.. I got confused there. If that's the case then yeah, there's no fixing that without stripping it and starting over. Cheap Rustoleum stuff can definitely do that but again remember he's comparing a $5 product to a $20 product.
I have a short sample video on my channel of the cheap Rustoleum 2x on a model car and it look's similar to how the 2K does in this video, even before wet sanding, cutting & polishing. He didn't do a very good job of spraying the 2x, in my opinion. Seems like it was done on purpose for the video.

Have you noticed if there is a difference between the Rustoleum Automotive Enamel clear and the 2X clear? The Automotive says it is formulated for use on vehicles and the weather?
Needa wedge something in your paint mixer 3000, letting it just free spin inside is slowing the amount of roatations

Why did you put the clear coat in the freezer? What does it do?
I got about 4 days doing that
5:25 when 2k paint is activated, you have less than 2 days before it cures solid inside the can. freezing stops the countdown enabling use later
Hey, you should do a 2k VS 1k. I would like to see how those compare. I only mentioned it because 2k is pretty expensive.
Thanks for that. On my one car , painted the mirrors with 2x and got those Riggle in the paint. And can't seems to fix it. But it's the 2x paint ,that's the problem. 🤪
The confusion was intentioanl by Rustoleum. I do like rustoleum for restoring headlight restorations. It's uv resistance is fantastic for preventing yellowing
Anyone knows if any rattlecan rustoleum wallmart stuff is compatible with the 2K max clear? Max is an amazing product but when i apply over rustoleum rattlecan paint, it reacts, screwing up the whole work.
Only if the Rustoleum is completely dry and cured. Otherwise it can wrinkle/pucker. 2K Max has different chemicals that can react with Rustoleum regular or 2X.

i'D LIKE TO PUT MULTIPLE LAYERS OF THE 2K ON MY HOOD AND ROOF ESPECIALLY. ANY RECOMMENDATIONS AS TO TECHNIQUE? HOW THICK, HOW LONG BETWEEN, SAND BETWEEN?
What about a scratch test ? Is there a big difference ?
I used both, would use neither on anything i want to look good. 2X is good for small parts that you dont care too much about, 2K is not worth the money, flaking off a test panel I coated 1.5 years ago. I found it actuall cheaper and easier to just get my spray gun out and mix up the clearcoat myself.

I've got test panels that been outside in sun rain and wind thrown around the yard pieces cut out with grinder and not cared for whatsoever and they basically the same as new 13yrs later for primer and 20yrs on the acrylic base and clear coat from the gun and it's still perfect. I think quality clear and base is just as good as any 2 pac if you wanna take the time and repolish the entire car after painting.
This is great if you have a compressor that is strong enough to spray clear. If not some 2k ever couple years wouldn't be bad. Not to mention some people swap cars so often they wouldn't own the piece anymore.
Great video ! Can I use the 2k max on rustoleum " enamel type " spray paints??? If so how long does the enamel paint need to cure before clear coating? The rustoleum clear likes to crackle even after 48 hours. Do they sell 2k at Lowes or home depot? < Thankyou > GR8 video u made!!😁

Rusto 2X is probably the worst clear coat out there. It wrinkles, peels, fades, and worst of all it can chemically destroy the finish.

In my experience Rustoleoum makes some of the worst garbage on the market. Their products are cheap so you can buy it everywhere but that doesn't mean it's any good. Their primer = sucks, their paint = sucks if used with any other products (including their own !), their clear coat = joke. Use primer by any other company and be impressed how smooth it is. Use any other clear coat and get close to 2k finish. Bottom line, Rustoleoum is GARBAGE!

To me it's like the 2K is meant to bring a glossy finish to anything you spray it on while the 2X is just if you spray it like three four maybe five times then I'll give it that real glossy finish but I see you only sprayed the 2K I think it was one or two times but either way the 2K looks better but I think at the end of the day for the price I would pay for the 2X because of price wise and if you spray it like me I like to spray it 4 or 5 times and I think it would bring out that glossy finish I'm looking for but thank you for the video
The 2x after it is dry you run your finger nail across it you can see a light scratch . 2k because of the hardener won't show . It's worth the money .
How do either of those clear coats hold up with the engine heat?
Both hold up fine i have done them before no issue with either just the 2X isn’t the best clear out there for gloss
Your 2x clear and 2K catalyzed clear,, both will peel in a year,, Have found that the high temp spray can Caliper clear,, lasts the longest, In the heat and in direct sunlight...
That rustoleum 2x paint sucks! I’ve tried it 3 times and it always looks like shit! It wrinkles up like he said, never looks shiny. Buy anything else.

Same here. I'm currently respraying my whole car, with the paint not being glossy & chipping away, with 2k clear coat. I've painted a few panels so far & it's starting to look like a normal car. It's worth the extra money

@@timd567 I have a can that's been in the fridge for several weeks and it's still liquid. I don't know if it will effect it in any way. When I use it again I'll try to remember to reply with my findings.

just an idea you can get different nozzles/caps on ebay for different styles for graffitti, not sure but you might want to give them a try there may be one that is a wider fan for your bigger jobs

Just finished painting two bike fenders with the 2k Matt and am very disappointed. It doesn't flow very well and ends up having a rough finish like very small orange peel. Not only that but I got down to one third of the paint still in the can and it started sputtering like the can was almost empty. The gloss might be much different to work with but I wouldn't recommend the matt clear to anyone. I might as well of thrown twenty-five bucks in the air!
Currently prepping to paint my Miata using methods from this channel. One question tho, I ordered 6 cans 2k clear for it. Think that'll be enough for the miata?

1x clear is basically transparent paint, no hardener, stays soft and fades aways quickly, not good for exterior panels imo, just use it for small interior part even then, when I discovered 2k clear I never looked back

I'm not quite sure why a comparison of these two products is even necessary. 2X is nothing more than clear spray paint. IT IS NOT CLEAR COAT! People think that because the 1K and 2K are clearcoats, then the 2X must be a clear coat too. The 2X means nothing except than they claim it will cover 2X's the area per can. It has none of the UV protection, hardening, or scratch protective characteristics of a real clear coat like 1K or 2K.
This is totally correct and needs to be repeated.
2K products are two part products that have a hardener added as the 2nd part. This is universal nomenclature for paints (pigment) and clear coats (protective).
The 2X is Rust-oleum's marketing mumbo jumbo aimed at claiming more coverage per unit.
Comparing the two is like comparing professional tools vs home use tools. Neither is wrong but not the same playing field

2K clear has a chemical hardener. The tempeture dosen't effect it.

Shouldn't you at least mention that the only company selling this 2X paint is Rustoleum. Could avoid some unnecessary confusion.
It's just a standard automotive 1k clear. 2x is rustoleums branding. Any duplicolor or vht clear will be the same.

Recently had to touch up a door on my SUV so wanted to use spraymax 2k clear so i didn’t have to drag out HVLP stuff. Worst paint job i ever did had lots of orange peel like yours does and needed almost 3 cans to get full coverage on full door. In the end sanded down then sprayed it right with my HVLP. Surprised at how bad my experience was with it, which surprised me because so many seem to have good results?
i use them all the time and get good results no sanding needed maybe you should try and warm it up

Moore I spray painted my gas tank cover with krylon primer n paint, i have orange peel. Can I just wet sand and buff or should I clear coat then wet sand and buff? Confused and sure could use the help.
Unless it’s a metal flake or Metallic I always sand out the orange peel before clear coating, for 2 reasons.
1. It gives some good bonding surface for the clear coating.
2. The flatter surface makes it a bit easier to sand/buff and polish of the clear coat. (Less dramatic Orange peel to deal with at the end)
Just make completely sure it’s clean and uncontaminated after you clean up the Orange peel before spraying the clear coat, or it will potentially ruin the whole thing. (Crinkle 🤮)

btw , im aiming to paint my next daily Rustoleum Smoke Grey after seeing how clean the civic came out. Any suggestions on how to mix? im going to try to paint it with a harbor freight paint gun instead of the rattle cans

2k does not have hardner
2k has an activator in it. You pop the red button off the cap. Stick it on the bottom of the can to release the activator in the can. 2X is regular clear with no activator. Having used both. 2k is harder than any regular clear.

@@hhastewe have Rust-Oleum.. its just acrylic, some are enamels.. But I agree 2k spraymax is awesome, I have used it and other brand that are 2k like Upol ect. Spaymax is the easier to get hands on those. I wish we had car rep 2k unlimited clear pot life here in Australia though.
