  • Please consider this as part of your kayak trolling motor setup. What happens when you flip? Will the trolling motor battery just hang and keep you from turning the fishing kayak back over? Probably unless you install these quick connects as one of the great fishing kayak trolling motor setup mods. It will not impact the battery mount and should be a best practice!

    I my mind the heaviest items should be firmly attached to the kayak`s body , the more wires and hanging lose equipment the more chances of getting tangled in a web of wires and rods and fishing lines and all the lose tools and bags ,etc when you flip , that is where the danger will come from , getting panicked underwater and tangled in your own mess... also need to keep a plan in mind on what is your plan when you have fallen in the water , will you float and how? will you get cold enough that you can`t even breathe and how will you flip that vessel to get out of this situation ? ... many little accidents end up in one disaster ! ... take care of all the little lose ends first by tidy up your kayak ! I am a certify rescue diver and I always try to see the "what will I do if shf " so I can have a mental plan to react ! ... so many details that one needs to be aware of ,specially if you are in open water where help is not a option most of the time and need to be self reliant on one self !

      Getting tangled is another reason to have the battery disconnect so you can flip the boat back over.

      Frank6430 , Look at how many die just floating the river in tubes . Most people have a plan . It just usually dont work out .
      i know a whole family that went tubing all the time . The whole family practiced and prepared for different situations .
      They whole family went out tubing , the whole family went missing .

    I paid to much $$$ for my 100AH Lithium Battery to let it sink to the bottom of the pond, lake or sea! So I attached a small buoy to a 50’ line (strong enough to lift the light weight battery).
    I learned my lesson when I lost a brand new sealed lead acid battery 😫

    • @doctorkayak
      @doctorkayak Рік тому

      As long as your buoy is buoyant enough to float the battery if you are in 50ft of water or more and as long as your 50ft line doesn't get tangled and go down with it. There a lot of if's when you flip a yak.

    SAFETY! So important. And, as often happens, YOU point out a potential danger many may not think of. (Like your quick-release knot for an anchor.)
    I just got the Bixpy motor. I'll have to figure out how much of an issue this might be for me -- I think I can secure it to my Hobie and so it won't be a problem, but better safe than sorry!
    I do love the idea of the quick connects and hope I can figure out how to use those to connect my battery to my fish finder -- Bixby warns that the motor may cause interference with fishfinders. If I CAN use the Bixpy battery, great! If not, I have Nocqua batteries but I'd like to be able to quickly switch from one to the other.
    Thanks for another fantastic video!

    Love your videos! I agree with everything that you are saying, but when you flip your kayak, your battery should not be suspended in the water. Most state law requires the battery to be inside a battery box and secured to the boat to keep it from moving around or falling out.

    Very wise. Nothing like having a battery as an anchor- not a good idea. So the disconnect makes a lot of sense

    I use andersons. But not to disconnect my battery if I flip. Silly idea thinking about an expensive battery go bye bye. Use a waterproof case strapped securely in the tankwell. If you have inside hull room - mount the battery there.

    • @KayakhacksFishing

      The last place would be to put it inside. I did a test using just weights and the kayak was nose down sticking up out of the water. Impossible to flip.

    Why not have your battery secured in the kayak? cables run neatley around the side or through the kayak. for added saftey stick on some outriggers.

    Steve, I’m missing something. Why does the battery need to be disconnected in open water to turn the yak over? I’m going to do this yak because i just read a got had a battery charging fire and it lasted through hoo yak so I’ll be charging mine on a concrete floor. What do you know about fireproof battery cases?

      Lithium batteries are amazingly light. A pool noodle or two zip tied or glued to the battery would keep one afloat. Maybe not so with lead acid battery.
      Best to secure that battry to the katak so it won't become suspended.

    • @2reelyakrz481
      @2reelyakrz481 Рік тому

      @@doctorkayak 🤣 the lead acid batteries we use weigh in at about 60 lbs for one which runs trolling motor and 30 lbs for the one which runs everything else (and is the backup for the motor). Plans are to swap to lithium, but batteries we are looking at are in the 30-45 lbs range. Though it would be nicel to have a way to float a 35ah - 100ah battery, I don't see a practical way to do that without taking up a lot of space. There is also the matter of the battery being damaged or destroyed - saltwater is not the least bit friendly to lithium batteries.
