This is how you TEACHHHH. If you want others to learn, this is how it's done. It's called breaking things down step by step by step. I conjugated the sentences correctly. Yeaa!
I understand the past sub, but i still make mistakes...but i am still pushing ahead. There is no going back.

This is what Im trying to do now. First I wrote down categories of conversation that Im likely to talk about, then come up with starter sentences, eg. ordering food, gardening, using tools, history, nature. This lets me focus on the vocabulary I need rather than things I will likely never be involved in.

As a native Spanish speaker, I’d say that both “tuve que llegar” and “tenía que llegar” are possible in that example, they just mean different things.
“Tenía que” is about the motivation for getting up so early without committing to what actually happened (I was supposed to finish some work at the office); while “tuve que”is stating what you did (I turned up early and finished some work). The Imperfect tense paints the background for a story but is not the story itself, while the Preterite is about the plot of the story. For instance, “estaba lloviendo, y no quería mojarme”(background); así que me quedé en casa” (plot).
While, “estuvo lloviendo todo el día; así que la ciudad se inundó (plot point followed by another plot point).
It is really difficult to grasp the subtle differences at times. I often tell my students to ask if it can be put on a timeline (Preterite) or otherwise removed entirely without affecting the plot (Imperfect).

Very well constructed video. Thank you Paul. I wanted to share, as an english speaker living in spain for a year, to learn the language. I've discovered a beautiful show that was just launched on Prime. Called Zorro. It's new. it's a series, and im able to set the cc to spanish so i can read while i watch. The dialog for learning with the subtitles turned on is the best of any program I've seen since I've been here, coming up on 1 year. I would encourage my fellow intermediates to check it out. Audio is not in english. Its in spanish. But it's very easy to follow and enjoy. Thanks for keeping all my spain referrals engaged. I remember when you used to say, i dont teach spain spanish. Maybe you should post a survey asking where we are watching from. I feel like since i subscribed last april, your spain expat subscriber base has become a very significant part of your viewership/subscribership. Nos encantariamos a saber. Take care. -de Cadiz

Even something like this for a beginner is extremely helpful, I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the grammatical terms (re-learning in English so I understand better when implementing in Spanish) but simple things like this really help me make that leap from where I am now, and being able to utilize things like this in the future is amazing, please do more like this, and longer videos if you ever feel like it 😂❤

Hey Paul, I’m pretty good with the subjunctive so I haven’t watched your subjunctive triggers videos. Do you teach the trick of using the third person preterite to quickly form the imperfect subjunctive? Hablaron/hablara, vivieron/ viviera, hubieron/hubiera, etc? Helps me a lot. Love your videos and great unique approach!

    Muchas gracias por este ejercicio!
I struggle sometimes with the subtleties, like I wasn't sure about tenia que vs tuve que in the second sentence. But your explanation made it perfectly clear, that was really helpful.
I also chose "olvidé" instead of "me olvidé de". More instruction on those types of distinctions would be helpful, too. 🙏

Whew...my sentences are not nearly this advanced and that was a lot in that break down. But I will say that the "porque" drill in just these few minutes has already made me feel as if I made a break to the next level. My example: Hoy me levante a cinco de la manana par llegar a la officina. Por que? Porque Estoy cansada de llegar tarde todos los dias. What a great drill for any level. I am going to practice this in a sentence every day while I talk to myself. Thanks for the super suggestion.

@@QrooSpanish I challenge you to take the Clozemaster 10 languages 10 questions each challenge. Pick any 10 languages video yourself taking the challenge and inspire us. (whether you have studied are familiar with or not). This is a fun opportunity to showcase your talent with a little bit of humility proving you too are human and still a language learner. You can put the flags of the 10 languages you choose for the challenge in both the thumbnail and the title and tag the video as #takingtheclozemaster 10 languages challenge. While also tagging the languages of the challenge. When choosing from a diverse variety of languages consider this, to include some of those you're familiar with, those that you are not, and those that you will later learn. Choosing to include a conlang like Interlingua and an ancient language like Latin will keep the challenge diverse while bringing recognition to these languages (you may surprise yourself). Consider getting a hold of Clozemaster they may be interested in sponsoring the video. We as a community of language Learners need a challenge that we can all appreciate and try together. To get the most out of the video challenge adjust the settings as follows: put the skills to listening, the question count to 10, and the mode to multiple choice. Then you can adjust the account to dark mode (as it's more attractive) and the default speed to 75% for better hearing the questions. Doing a dry run will ensure all the settings are correct. Keep a notepad by your side to keep track of the language scores. Before you end the video it would be nice if you encouraged other polyglots and language Learners to take up the challenge.
      Buenas suerte
      Carpe Diem

Once again, great video Paul! What I have learned from you: learn the subjunctive and don’t be scared of it. Got it! What I still need to learn from you: don’t put everything in the present subjunctive because the imperfect subjunctive also exists … whoops! I didn’t do great on the intermediate nor advanced sentences, but I do love this format. I came up with “Yo había llevar (I meant llegar dang it!) temprano así que mi jefe no sabía que ayer me olvidé terminar un proyecto importante.” The part of the lesson at 13:45 explaining to use “olvidarse de terminar” or “olvidar terminar” is extremely valuable, I unfortunately just made up my own rules. I’ll keep trying though.

I would have thought two subjects would imply "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo." and his reply was that "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo." is acceptable. Is this acceptable "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo. and if not, why not?

Imagine that there are a lot of native Spanish speakers out there who don’t/can‘t role the “r”. Just relax! Your English pronunciation of that letter (like in the word “bring”) will do to get you understood. During time you will pick it up like the native speakers do 😉 Don’t stress yourself about it! There’s much more important for English mother tongues like pronouncing the vowels correctly 🤷‍♀️

Another excellent instruction! I totally agree with you about the importance of integrating subjunctive into everyday conversations. This exercise is super helpful for building that confidence and practical ways to do it!💪🏼 Quick question on olvidarse. I hear and many people say se me olvidó rather than me olvidé. Any thoughts?

It’s coming from “le me olvidé” which is turning into “se me olvidé” that se=le meaning “it” when translating into English: I forgot it (accidentally) otherwise there would be missing the “what” if there’s nothing more following 😉

why in the second sentence did you say "antes de que llegara mi jefe"? I said "antes de que mi jefe llegó.
and nevermind, paul you've done it again. I am just realizing that you were using the imperfect subjuctive of llegar! found something to work on!

@@QrooSpanishI’m wondering if this would be really the same meaning as I’ve learned “hoy día” says something like “nowadays” in English instead of “el día de hoy” saying “today”?

Thanks for the fantastic videos. They have helped me level up my Spanish significantly. Quick question though. I have been focusing on listening, speaking and reading in Spanish but not so much on writing. Is writing something I need to do also?

Personally, I am a very visual learner so writing the language helped me learn it. I used to see the words in my head. If writing is not important to you and you don't necessarily learn better that way, I wouldn't worry about it.
