My biggest game changer in Spanish was my listening comprehension. When I would lay down to go to sleep every night, I would turn on some Spanish asmr and after about a month I could distinguish between every word, even if I didn’t know what they were saying.
I think You were born to teach Spanish !
Thanks! That's very nice of you.
Great tips! Patterns are definitely a great way to speed up the learning process. It may take some getting use to, but with consistent practice it becomes a natural part of you.
Not even gonna lie, you changed the game with this one. Thank you for this.
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The book called “Magdrigals Magic Guide to Spanish” goes over this and you instantly realize how similar a lot of words in Spanish and English. It covers what he’s talking about and is very helpful just like this video. I’m still reading the book and I highly recommend it
Edit: I’d recommend it if you are new to Spanish (A1-A2). If you’re an intermediate Spanish speaker, then I wouldn’t recommend it for you
Thanks for sharing the recommendation.
Lol yeah like train is just tren. I've noticed a lot of words sound a lot like English. That will definitely make it easier to learn
@@pissapocalypsetren is what u inject in the gym
Madrigals is an ok book but step by step maybe a bit better .
I ordered Madrigals book and sent it back. I’m an intermediate speaker B2 level and didn’t find it relevant to understanding the conjugations of verbs and when to use each tense of the verb.
Something that isn't often pointed out by tutors of other languages, is that modern English bears far less resemblance to its archaic methods of phrasing than romance languages. For example, in this video, Paul used "En lugar de" to translate "Instead of". In times past, Instead was two words: "In" and "Stead". Today, we've condensed it into one word that is parsed in our head in a slightly abstracted way, and only in very formal or intentionally archaic writing do we separate these words anymore (much like the word "anymore"). Virtually no one casually says things like "In another's stead" these days, but languages like Spanish do. It can help a lot to listen to 'ye olde timey' English to wrap your head around how people phrase things in other languages related to English.
Great point. Thanks for taking the time to share that.
Learning Spanish can help with understanding Shakespeare!
@@auntiechrisReading the Bible can help you understand Shakespeare. ❤
This. Like "metal roof" is "techo de metal". In Spanish everything is _ of _.
Wow. This video is like a key to opening up my confused brain. I learned so many things from this one video.
Glad it was helpful!
This makes 100% sense to me. I was a failed French student, but once I lived in France, it became all about learning quick and easy phrases, using building block language techniques, until I started composing sentences with set phrases instead of just words. I was looking to do the exact same thing now with Spanish and I believe I have found my home.
Best way to learn Spanish by far. Better than all the books and apps and other UA-cam resources I’ve been using. Writing a book would make you millions!
I took three years of Spanish in high school. My teacher fled Cuba during the revolution so she was a native speaker. I’ve learned so much more Spanish and understand the principles much better just from watching your channel than I ever did in high school. And…I really did want to learn Spanish way back then. Have you ever thought of writing a book yourself? It’s very difficult for people like me who are trying to jump to the intermediate level. I just wasted $21 on an audiobook that is supposed to bridge that gap, but it falls way short. I would buy your book! You’re a great teacher! Also, while studying Spanish in high school, “the subjunctive” was never mentioned once! Thank you for making these videos. I appreciate them very much!
Thank you very much! I have considered writing book, but I am not sure where I would find the time.
@@QrooSpanish Please do!!
Hello, I have this own method. It was thought and implemented by myself. I'm also learning a second, even third language. Yeah, right upon the beginning of this was very hard to me, but all of a sudden, this idea came out like that."Marc, learning english like whether it were a kinda spanish very weird". And since then all became easier for me. For instan: I am cold, yo estoy frío means tengo frío, another I just saw Marc driving his New car at the colombia street would be recién vi a Marc manejando...español raro ahora mi cerebro lo cambia a acabo de ver a Marc manejando... so on I hope this help you out. Buen día Chao!
The best way to become fluent in a language is to go back in time and tell your parents to take you to Spain or some other Hispanic country before the age of 13 (and be exposed to Spanish at 3 years old at least). Of course, you can't do that, so the best way to become fluent that actually works is this one.
1. Full immersion. Listen to and speak as much Spanish as possible.
2. Think like a Spanish speaker, Mexican, Colombian, whatever. Study the words by their intrinsic meaning and use and not their translation into English.
3. Be intuitive. Find root words, study the prefixes, use what you know and write down what you don't.
4. Move to a Spanish speaking country with at least an intermediate level, and make some bilingual friends.
5. Focus on vocabulary that you're interested in learning. I'm a native Spanish speaker myself and I barely know the parts of a car (yesterday I learned the word guantera, the chest thing where you store CDs and documents right in front of the copilot seat).
@@QrooSpanish just keep doing these videos. They are excellent. Your accent is fabuloso and you speak and teach at a very nice pace. I use to live and work in Puerto Rico but that was 30 year's ago and I want to get back my fluency. I find my comprehension is way below my ability to speak.
By 0330 at night I coincidentally came across your video. As an upper intermediate in English and an intermediate in French, believe me before 10 mins I would just say "Hablo un poco de espanol" but after the patterns shown in this video, now I say I have begun to speak Spanish tonight. In one hand thanks God I met you tonight, on the other hand my regrets for not having started to learn spanish before, because I already had hundreds of vocabulary in english&french that are quite similar to the ones in spanish. And thanks to you now I have the formula to speak it in a better way hopefully. Thanks a lot. Merci mille fois. Gracias mil veces.
I'm glad that you found the video so useful. :)
Definitely one of the absolute best spanish teaching concepts that i have ever seen....the pattern concepts in your lessons are amazing.
Thank u for ur help. It’s incredible how good u r at this stuff….making it easier.
Just discovered this channel, what I find challenging in Spanish is two fold. First the high context, second the many different dialects.
Also living in the US it has beneficial to be bi lingual. Even up in New England.
Well done with this video, it helped.
No kidding. I'm in NH, and probably more than half my coworkers speak some form of Spanish.
I started learning Spanish almost a couple of months ago , I've had some issues concerning the resources .
Yet this is the best teacher I've ever seen so far!
I am glad you are making videos again Paul - Thank you
This is amazing!! Thank you Qroo!!
En lugar de confirmar la información, quiero ir a la playa! I just want to say thank you very much for these videos and they are greatly appreciated by all. I am an intermediate beginner and the way you break down your concepts are very helpful. This allows me to take words I am familiar with and understand how they really work when group together. Muchas gracias Qroo Paul!!
Brilliant, Paul, this lesson was really helpful!
I speak Spanish and I can approve that this is something genius.
Wow. I just learn so much! Thank you. I start Spanish lessons next week.
This was tremendously helpful!
Bought the reference book a couple of months back. Like you say some of it at this stage is waaaaay over my head but there are loads of useful nuggets in there.
Your lessons are so helpful. I am using your lessons to help me communicate with my Spanish speaking students and I am improving every day. Thank you so much.
“En lugar de” reminds me a lot of words like “además” “sin embargo” and “aunque”. Is there a way you can teach how to use those words?
I can tell you aunque is the most "different" of the group because it can use the indicative or the subjunctive. "Voy a salir después aunque llueva mucho"(I'll go out after even if it rains alot). "Aunque, París es una ciudad impresionante, prefiero Londres" Although Paris is an astonishing city, I prefer London. Both sentences are grammatically correct, the others don't really go into this territory
@ohitzwavy7173 I was just checking out the same examples. I'm still a bit confused about these "sometimes" subjunctive triggers.
En Lugar de, reminds me of in leu of
@johnharvey5381 the book Paul recommended that helped his spanish journey really helped me a lot with understanding the subjunctive just aside from the "when there's doubt" perspective. Obviously you have antes de que. Querer que, esperar que etc but there's also other places where you would say ir. Like if you wanted to say "we will go inside when they arrive" in spanish arrive isn't llegan it's lleguen
En lugar de ≡ en vez de ≡ Instead
*Example:* Shot him in the legs instead of the hands
*Spanish:* Le disparó en las piernas en vez de en las manos
"Además" is a word that refers to inclusion "Y"
*Example:* Tomorrow is sunday *and* I'll have a party with ny friends
*Spanish:* Mañana es domingo y tendré una fiesta con mis amigos.
*Or it could be:* Mañana es domingo, *además* tendré una fiesta con mis amigos
Thanks again Paul. You ARE THE BOSS !
Paul, you hit it out of the ballpark again , as you Always do !! Muchas gracias !!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Nice video Paul. Very useful! Once I understood “helper” verbs like querer, tener que, etc., and that they could be followed by infinitives, my Spanish really took off. Prepositions like antes de, después de and para, followed by infinitives add to my being able to construct more intelligent Spanish sentences. Thanks for reinforcing these concepts! These patterns are common and useful to know.
Great lesson, Paul!!
Thanks Paul. I always learn something new even from videos that are on the easier side for this principiante. I use flashcards for base phrases and add phrase expansions to the same card along with sample sentences from your videos. This seems to be working pretty well so far. My only difficulty is sometimes remembering the phrases when I'm away from the card deck, particularly when I'm attempting a conversation. I suppose that is expected.
Thanks so much Paul for the helpful info
I watched this when it came out - and just watched it again. A reminder of why you're so good at this! Thank you, Paul!
Thank you!
I've learned alot thanks to your channel. Learning was hard as i have memory issues due to past bad decisions but these tips are helping me alot. Thank you 🙏
It's so true, a substantial amount of vocabulary in Spanish has the same roots as in English and most of it are true cognates.
Latin derivative
HE IS AWESOME !
Paul, you have the best UA-cam channel that I have encountered for learning Spanish. I always pick up something from your videos and the tips are very easy to use. Thanks for making these!
Thanks, I appreciate that!
Excellent! I learned a lot in just a few minutes!!!
This is great thank you!
I like ur way of teaching. Following u from Syria ❤
Thanks brother I'm sticking to your channel now!!
Awesome! Welcome!
Muchas gracias Q Paul. Thank you for this great video because I definitely needed this one. Your the best my friend. Definitely going to check that book you recommended as well. Keep up the amazing work. 🙏🏾😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Good luck on your channel. :)
I appreciate the sentence structure instruction. I’m doing ok with the present but struggling a bit with past and future
A million "thank yous!"
I usually struggle with SPN help vids.
I was prepared to once again be lost & disappointed in my inability to understand the concepts. Your method resonates & I appreciate how you teach. Subbing & binge watching. Thanks again.
Love the approach
Excellent as usual!
Fantástico otra vez Paul muchas gracias .
pretty awesome video!!
Having Filipino as my first language is I think very helpful with some words and pronunciation since some of our words are borrowed from them
Thanks! This vlog was very informative! 🤩
Thank you for this.
Currently on page 245, and it is a good read, and addresses many little, nagging questions I had about subtleties in the differences between regions.
Woohoo, another video! Your videos have really reignited my excitement for learning Spanish, thanks so much!
That's great to hear. You can definitely learn it. :)
This is by far the most Spanish I have learned from one video. You kick ass Paul
That's awesome to hear!

Very clever approach , thank you so much for that . Paternes that’s the word to keep in mind

Thank you sir. I am not only learning Spanish with Your lessons, but improving my English as well. As an emigrant to Canada my English still needs improvement and Your way of speaking it helps me a lot!! Thank you so much.
Your English is excellent! You must have a gift for learning languages.
After viewing a ton of channels, I do believe I’ve finally found the channel for me. This was very informative and greatly appreciated. Buying my book right now. 🎉
Great to hear!
The John Butt grammar reference is the best you can get. It's super heavyweight. It even corrects, explains and clarifies RAE grammar guide
I totally agree!
Thanks again Paul for being such an awesome teacher. Estoy aprendiendo mucho de ti. Gracias por ayuda!
Gracias por ver mis videos. Me alegra que te gusten. Un saludo.
I’m don’t😅k la Hyd😢 CD ñ min lol❤ lo😢
Why didn't I stumble on this simple pattern 5 years ago. It certainly would have saved me a lot of frustration to start speaking sooner instead of too much time on confusing grammar. Great teaching skills.
Siempre vídeo muy útil! Mil gracias. Después de ver tus vídeos, lo que me gusta hacer es volver a ver varias veces hasta que entienda el contenido completamente.

As always, felicitaciones (a “tion-ción” cognate many people probably don’t know in English! 😅) for another great video. Instead of “en lugar de” I more often use “en vez de”. Basically interchangeable phrases, good to be aware of both. But I realize “en lugar de” may make more sense to English speakers (in place of). How does “in time of” translate to instead? Well, Word Reference to the rescue. I just discovered today that in Spain, “vez” can mean time OR turn. I’ve never heard it mean that in Latin America. Always learning something new.
In Mexico we also use 'vez' to refer to time. For instance, "Voy a probar esta comida por primera vez" ("I'm going to try this meal for the first time"). I think the usage you've read or heard is 'vez' to mean 'occurrence'. E.g. "Te dije dos veces que hicieras la tarea" ("I told you twice to do your homework").
@@claucemicro1080 Well, it turns out there are multiple definitions and usages for “vez”. From the DRAE (Diccionario de la Real Academia Española), arbiters of all things to do with the Spanish language, there are 8 definitions for vez:
8. f. pl. Ministerio, autoridad o jurisdicción que alguien ejerce supliendo a otra persona o representándola. Hacer las veces de otro. Hacer uno con otro veces de padre.
@@mwiebe2663Gracias for posting this !
Oh that's odd, I would argue that "en vez de" is much more used coloquially than "en lugar de" (I'm from Argentina)
Phenomenal video. Anyone and everyone who's looking to learn Spanish needs to follow Qroo Paul and watch all of his videos. I just now discovered him by watching this video and will try to immerse myself in his videos to help me in my upcoming trip to Argentina. Thank you Qroo for sharing your knowledge. You're a life saver!
Thanks for taking the time to comment! You made my day!
Wow! Thank you.
Very helpful, please continue 👌🏼🩷

Hello!! Where are you from? Maybe I can help you, I am a spanish native speaker
I was skeptical when i saw the thumbnail but this is the most helpful spanish video I’ve seen. I would like it twice if i could
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is awesome. I immediately subscribed! 👍🏻😀
Thank you so much. Very helpful
Awesome! Thank you!
I love the way you teaching, hopefully someday you will write the book....
Thanks, but I'm not sure when I would find the time.
I've had a playlist of your other videos starting with the cognate tricks and have been listening to them as I have time, but I really LOVE this one, because it condenses a lot of that info into a shorter concise format. I'd rather have three videos that I can watch part of, pause, repeat, and move on, than a playlist of 177 different videos. Maybe I'm strange, but that's me. I DO definitely LOVE the way you approach these learning videos though! Best I've seen! Love y'all's other main channel too!
Thank you for this do you have another video that teaches the patterns this helped me so much and I want to learn more patters please
Thoroughly enjoyed that lesson. Ended up speaking sentences I had no idea of before. Also bought the book....thanks very much
