Tyler, way back when, I used to make and sell recordings of weddings. It was in the 70's, that really 'back when', you think? Well anyhow, in those days, the equipment was, as you could imagine, heavy and cumbersome. The reel to reel recorder alone was 70#'s, a separate mixer, mics, etc. could fill up a station wagon. One weekend, in July, with the temp in the 80's with no A/C, the church windows were all open, and the bride and groom kneeling at the alter saying their 'I do's', the absolutely worst thing happened. A fire engine raced by with lights and siren blasting. My headphones flew off, ouch, VU meters pinned and no chance to recover, I took the horrible recording home and fumbled with it for a week. I finally fixed it! Finding another wedding recording, I spliced it into this one and no one ever knew. Some body asked and I said, " If I tell you, I'll have to kill you" haha.
Thanks !! I am an old guy. I grew up with much simpler devices; like volume, tone and record. I HATE reading instruction manuals and always try to fumble through it. You made the introduction to the Tascam very easy; so thanks for that.
@@tylerherrinton great video! My date is stuck on jan 1, 2018. I can change it, then it defaults right back. Never has worked. Thanks for the excellent explanation on everything else!
Hey man just want to say thank you for this video. I bought this same device the menu doesn’t have the same as yours . But it’s funny because it appears you did video 5 years ago and in tech land thats yonks ( Ages) but still this recorder was made well and sound is incredible…
Line level is for guitar cables and any other quarter inch cables like keyboard left and right or even mixer output etc. mic is XLR mic calbles with the 3 pins. Basically if you have the end that looks like a guitar cable plugged into the hole, use line, if you have the circular mic cable with 3 pins, use mic.
hey thanks, i didn't even realise you could plug a guitar jack into this thing, I thought the hole was for XLR only, but lo-and behold, you can! game changer! thanks!
Not really "...every menu...walk thru entire process..." when on the 1st menu settings you state, "I don't even know what it does. Just turn it off." Just because you may not know what low cut filters do, doesn't mean it's not applicable to others.
Tip; Auto Record (when switched on) means that the device will start recording as soon as it gets an input signal above the threshold you set. In theory, you can leave it on standby and it will trigger the recording function when the band starts playing or someone starts talking. I've got the function on my DR-70 but I don't trust it, just don't think the 'convenience' is worth the risk.
bought a couple years ago and even with ;manual never could figure out how to actually get this to record so it went in a storage box and I use my trusted applications on my phone. Dolby has a great app for smartphones and you don't need to have the waste of money on this.
For what I need it for...Thanks!!! I've had my recorder for over 2 years!!! I learned more watching your video 'Quicker' than working with the Owner's Manual!!! Great job!!! SFGS! (Semper Fi! Godspeed!)
Thank you sir! I've had this recorder for a while and every time I plugged it in to the dj speaker or system I always end up with a bunch of mumbling noise in the background lol🤦♀ I just found out why, because I didn't set my source right, and all the videos I watched on YT didn't explain that clearly. So, thank you!
Tyler: "I don't know what Initialize does" Also Tyler: "Sometimes it will reset the settings, I don't know why" Thanks for the great video, just a short tip back: Initialize actually does not format the card, but all the settings back to factory settings. Hope that helps too! :)
Clarification on the side Line is for quarter inch cable, Mic is for xlr cable that doesn't require phantom power like off a mixing board, Mic Phantom is for microphones that require Phantom power
Thanks - I needed this video. I’m going to use one from a friend to do a live band recording for a demo and really don’t want to read through pages and pages of manual.
Tyler, also I forgot to tell you that back then, there was no sound tech, i was it. Had to place all the mic's and mix them myself. So, the preacher had a mic, the couple had mics at the kneeling pads and if anyone else wanted to speak, a mic had to be available. So, I was busy, plus afterward, I had to out of there before the next event. What a rush!
Thank you for the effort to help me and everyone understands how to set up the TASCAM! One question, what is XRI Mode? The tree options that are under it are OFF, ON, and ON+GPS; should I leave it off?
Next time just take 10 mins to talk to a sound engineer (who are always present at weddings) what these functions do. Auto-record is super neat. You set the threshold of volume for it to start auto recording at. That way you don't have to run over (or forget) to hit the record button when somebody starts speaking
Thank you for your video, I've had this thing for years and have constantly battled with setting it up. Of course, 2 little set the switch to mic not line was the big one for me as I kept going through the motions but it always recorded super low (nearly inaudible) but switch it to mic instead of line and that made ALL the difference. Again thank you. Migraine subsiding.
Thanks, but can it record dual external mics? A Safety track of External 1 and 2 on both the left and the right? Otherwise, it's better to get the DR-10X or two of them. lol
Nice! I have a question? My Tascam 40X Records but after an hour or so it doesn't record audio on the card, its blank. Before I used to record over 2 hours straight without any problem. Is there a reset or a special setting I to know about? I'm using the external XLR input.
Thank you just spent the last 4 hours trying to find the right recording mode for recording from djm 600 xlr to jack EXT Line In. Found it now though at last. Every dance music track was had a double beat delay like trying to process 2 signals at once. The manual that comes with it id quite basic I'm not the most technically minded though. Haha
I'm still stunned that no one found out about difference in noise level between 44.1/48 and 96khz recordings. I tested it several times in the completely quiet room, and 96khz has a slightly softer noise and less hiss = a bit less noisy overall. You will not hear the difference unless you are recording a quieter ambient like living room, nature, etc.
@@devanwoodruff7289 DR40 is great, but mostly for outdoor recordings, phenomenal audio. I found that interior recordings, like rooms, offices etc, will produce very pronounced echo.
Shoot, I mostly use the built in mic that's great to know, the noise floor sometimes bothers me. Be sure to use one of those $25 24db preamp booster adapter on those dynamic mics
YEAH BRO!!! Love this man, amazing and wild hype to get this going, I've had for 2 years and used very minimally but as my VO auditions increase, as should the work, my investment will come into play so I'm grateful my man. Thank you!
6:25 assuming it's the same as Windows; 'Quick Format' just wipes the list of recordings and makes the SD ready for re-writing, the files can be recovered with special software. 'Full Format' actually deletes the data and defines the file-system type (FAT or FAT32). 'Initialize' is for new SD cards; does a full format and installs a system file. Both Full Format and Initialize only need to be done on an SD card new to the Tascam.
Is the dual recording will it give you a louder mix cause that’s basically my only problem with recording is making it much louder im a dj and doing post production sucks when all i need is more umph in loudness
How do I get the tascam to recognize my mic when Im using it as an audio interface? I made sure that the source was the bottom left xlr jack but it refuses to pick up
Thanks, still slightly confused though. I want to use this with two lavalier XLR mics. Which will plug into two ports. If I choose Mono, it only records one of them, if I choose Stereo, it seems like it will record one lav mic on the left track and one on the right track.. which isn't what I want.. So I have to use 'dual', which creates two sound files at different levels? It seems like this is the option I have to choose.. ?
Hi! Thanks so much! What a great video! Question: I am using this recorder to film commercials at home with the Sennheiser MKE600. Is there any reason I need to record in Dual mode or can I use mono? What is the benefit? I am an audio beginner
I have this same recorder but haven't used it for a while. When I put it in record mode I hit the record button for second time but it will only record for about 5-6 seconds then goes back into standby mode. Driving me nuts!! Any suggestions?
Hi thanks for the tips ! But How to record simultaneously the DR40 stereo mic on a track (ambient) + an external mic on an other track ? while keeping the input levels settings independent ? Thanks
Pretty good for not knowing about some of the settings. The important stuff is good. Thanks. Does the headphone monitor work always by default. Can you hear the sound though the mics via the headphone before you hit the second record signal as a test for levels and overall sound? Thanks for your help.
I'm a Film student and my professor was so completely vague on how the hell this works. Best video ever, complete life saver.

Basically if you have the end that looks like a guitar cable plugged into the hole, use line, if you have the circular mic cable with 3 pins, use mic.
Correct, that is an input selector, not a level selection.
