    Phantom power doesn't damage dynamic mics. Only sensitive ribbon mics can be damaged with phantom, and most newer ribbons can accept phantom power with no issue.
    Otherwise, great review! Very thorough and a great hands-on vid!

    Thanks for reviewing this i didnt know the XLR excepts quarter inch jacks. When you said around 27:20 that handling the Tascam while recording makes sounds you don’t want, but isn’t that the same with a mic, you dont touch it while its recording otherwise you’ll hear the same sounds?

    I understand you can’t mix dynamic and condenser mic’s in the XLR sockets because of the phantom power but could you use a condenser with phantom power and a 1/4 jack from a guitar?

    • @endrizo

      an electric guitar direct does not sound good better use an amp and record the speaker with another mic

    I know some people hate that the Zoom products use knobs because they're prone to being moved and ofc there might be the worry of knob drift

    I have had the entry level DR-05 for years awesome bit of kit compared to the Zoom H1 was looking at a more beefier model with XLR jacks and stuff but never took the plunge and now have a camera with XLR built in.
    The software looks identical to mine but the older units have orange backlights which I personally prefer to boring white/blue that newer models have. I assume they had a reason for that minor change though. As for the cloudlifter/fethead you can get a SubZero Microphone booster from Gear4Music think its £30 and gave me hardly any hiss on my dynamic microphone

      That SubZero preamp looks good, unfortunately for my mic I'd need one that passes the phantom power through to the connected mic whereas most of them (except for the Fethead Phantom) seem to block the phantom power since they're designed for dynamic mics. Will need to keep digging to see if there are cheaper options that will pass phantom power on as I'd rather avoid having to put a battery in my mic.

      @@camerongray1515 Fair enough. wonder how hard it would be to make something like that. the inside of these things are really simple so wonder if you can modify one to pass on phantom power for a condenser microphone but thats beyond my knowhow

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  4 роки тому

      @@AdamBluntExtra That is very tempting actually, sounds like all the specialist components would be present so the modification could be pretty simple.

      I cut out some photographic colour gels and stuck it on my Tascam ,if i wanted, i could use lots of different colours. I cut to fit and got double sided sticky tape to keep it in place

    Which one do you prefer dr40x or zoom h2n? And why

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  Рік тому

      The DR-40X is definitely my preference due to the XLR inputs however it really comes down to what you need, for example, if you need a 3.5mm input with plug in power or you want a mid-side microphone to allow you to adjust the stereo width after the fact, the the H2n is a better choice. However, I'd definitely say that if you're buying the DR-40x for the XLR inputs, I'd go for a higher end recorder as the preamp noise was very noticeable and I ended up needing to use an external preamp (Fethead Phantom) to reduce it.

    Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....

    • @acoustically9201

      Got it.....go to REC SETTINGS...MODE...SET ''MODE'' to OFF (was set to NEW FILE and this was causing it to jump to a new file during a ''soundcheck/levels test'' as the audio was low and the machine thinks audio input has ceased and ends the track.

    perchè non sono riuscito a farli funzionare in tutti i modi collegamenti bilanciati sbilanciati TRS XLR settaggi vari ecc..
    premetto che i lavalier funzionano perfettamente come pure i vari mic fucile ( Sennheiser MK6.. Rode NTG...)

    Why did they use micro when there is plenty of space for a full sized B .

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  4 роки тому

      To be honest, while full sized B is a more durable connector, I'd rather have MicroUSB or USB-C. People are much more likely to have one of those cables available or if I get stuck using this away from home and don't have a cable, it's relatively easy to get a suitable cable in a supermarket whereas USB-B or MiniUSB are somewhat harder to find.

    I really don't understand all the griping that so many people have about Tascam using plastic with their recorders.
    If you're going to be so careless that you need your recorder made out of tougher materials, then maybe audio recording isn't meant for you.

    I don't know if it's just my speakers but I heard absolutely no difference between the noise reduction being off or on...

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  4 роки тому +1

      The noise definitely isn't particularly loud, I notice them more on my speakers because they have very good tweeters and the noise is pretty high frequency (and because I'm deliberately turning them up and looking for the noise). I've also noticed it more on headphones than on speakers. I also wouldn't be surprised if UA-cam's compression is removing the noise.

    Had a Zoom H4N pro for 3 years, did look at the Tascam Dr-44WL which is same as this but with WIFI remote control. Got the Zoom as price difference and availability.
    Recently got a Behringer UMC202HD which is a USB input/output interface and that has two XLR inputs and very well built for 50£ mark, also the preamps are better and worth checking as a studio/backup XLR input.
    Only issue that erks me on the Tascam feild recorders is the input voltage line/mic/phantom - Zoom does that in menu's so no chance of accidental changing mid use, and does display status on backlight screen. Kinda one of those things you set and forget, so dedicated switch for me would be more downside than upside. But usage mileage may vary.
    Now you just need to reverse engineer the remote ;).

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  4 роки тому +1

      I was tempted by the DR-44WL but as you said, the price was really close to the H4n Pro which seemed a bit more well known so would have probably gone for the Zoom if I was spending that much. Interesting you mention the UMC202HD, I was actually using one to record the audio for this video!

    • @camerongray1515
      @camerongray1515  2 роки тому

      Yeah, the preamps aren't the best on this. To reduce the hiss you'd either need to use an external preamp (I used a FetHead Phantom) or get a higher end recorder.
