    Crocs story: I used to be a tiny bit negative about Crocs. Probably just like many other people. Then I saw a pair on sale and I bought them ONLY because they were my favorite color, bright yellow, lol! They are now my favorite shoes and because of their simplicity, I think they are a perfect design. I wear thick socks with them, they’re very comfy.

    I have a set of clippy mics that I use in my drop rig and they are great. I purchased a tiny Pelican style case, put in a Zoom F3 and run it with a USB power pack. In the field the mics are strapped on either side of a small tree using the shock mounts. The case attached to the base of the tree with a bike lock. I just let it record overnight and come back for it the next day. Now, I need the pluggy version. :-)
    Cheers,

    It seems to me that the 3.5mm Clippys are more flexible as you can use them with XLR (via VXLR+ adapters) or 3.5mm sources, whereas pluggys are XLR only. As far as I know there is nothing to convert 3.5mm with plug in power to XLR with phantom power, only the other way round?

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  10 місяців тому +1

      You’d be correct. Though, 3.5mm terminated mics are more prone to noise and interference.
      If you want the most flexibility, the 3.5mm terminated Clippys are probably the best choice. You could always get the 3.5 female to XLR male adapters, but not the other way around, as you said.

    • @TheRecordist

    Hello TPS, thank you for the review! First of all, I think this channel's gonna be booming in 2024! So while you still have time to answer all questions, I'm gonna ask some :D
    From what I understand, Zoom F3 right now is an optimal solution for that price, however it doesn't have built-in microphones. Do you think these Pluggys will do the job? They will sit in a pretty close A-B config, so that's suboptimal I guess. Maybe any adapters to make X-Y configuration? Or just forget about this idea whatsoever?
    Thanks in advance

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  10 місяців тому +2

      Hey there. Thanks so much! I hope it booms!
      As to your question, the two XLR ports on the F3 are way too close to each other to create enough separation between the left and the right channels. Instead, I would just purchase a couple of cheap XLR microphone cables at your desired length and then mount the Pluggys at a greater distance (30cm or so). You can also pick up any cheap stereo bar (a bar with two mic holders) to do the separation.
      X/Y is not an effective configuration for omni mics. Only cardioids.
      But the Pluggys will do nicely!
      Hope this helps!

    I'm about to get into field recording, mainly to capture sample fodder for my music production projects. Had my heart set on the Sony PCM-D100 until I heard the Clippys. Now I'm leaning more toward a Zoom F6 and Clippys.
    Are there types of sounds PCM-D100's built in mics would be more suited for than the Clippys? (or even an expensive Schoeps CCM 4 for that matter?) The Clippy sounds just as natural and balanced from what I've heard of your recordings, even compared with field recordings I've heard from pros using 10k worth of equipment. Obviously there's much I still need to learn about recording before shelling out a ton of cash, but at least I won't be losing much on these budget friendly mics.

    • @TheRecordist
      @TheRecordist  5 місяців тому

      Hey there. Well, the Sony PCM-D100 is an amazing recorder for a compact one. In fact, it’s the best compact recorder ever made. However, an F6 with a pair of Clippys or Pluggy mics would sound even better for ambience. You have more control with separation.
      The only issue with a setup like the Pluggys and the F6 is that it’s a bit less portable. The D100 is super easy to carry around.
      That’s the trade off. Also, it’s harder to get a D100 these days. They don’t make them anymore.
      This is for ambience recording. For more directional recording, SDC mics are the best. It really depends on what you’re going for.

    It's interesting to hear that they sound so different. Knowing that they use the same capsules one is led to wonder what causes this. Do they select the capsules for a particular frequency response? Is it the electronics, i.e. different values of the resistors and/or the coupling capacitors? Presumably, they'll never tell us.
