- “The question is not what we get out of nature, but what can we give back to nature.”
The Path of Grey Owl is a new film by Goh Iromoto. It follows world-renowned woodsman Ray Mears through the wilderness of Temagami, Canada as he explores the path of acclaimed author and conservationist Grey Owl (also known as Archibald Belaney). While reflecting on the landscape that shaped Grey Owl into the person that he was, Ray further delves into Grey Owl’s message about protecting our wilderness, and explains why this is still so relevant and important in our present day.

"The feel of the canoe gunnel at my thigh. The splash of flying spray on my face. The calm and silent presence of the trees. The trust and confidence of small living creatures. These have been my inspiration and my guide. Without them I am nothing.. " - Grey Owl
So growing up I dreamed of being like Ray and exploring nature. Now I am 34 I realise as I watch his videos I have been and seen so much of the places he's been. I met my misses in Oz and we now live in Canada, far far from Essex. The other day I rushed home, grabbed my dog and went bush. I woke up in the morning in the woods and saw a chap who could pass as Mears with the fire and kettle on at 7am. We shared tales and started to forge a friendship, as time passed I spoke of Ray Mears and explained who he was....the man in the bush laughed and went I know who he is.....I asked how? Turns out I was a 6 hour walk from Grey Owls cabin and so the story begun. Long story short....after years of admiring this mans adventurous spirit I woke up on a brisk Canadian morning with my dog to find I found myself, in my own little way and without knowing following the steps of Ray. Maybe it was the rough sleep I had from giving my dog the blankets and the only warm sleep, maybe I was happy to be in the bush....but I ended up having a little proud boy kind of moment. I got my fire going, brewed a cuppa and went on to find 2 black bears in the bush an Elk and a Moose. I now reside in Saskatoon, Sk Canada. Oh yeah, it's over 3 times the size of the UK, population is 1 million, most are in the south and there's over 100,000 lakes. Let that sink in. Thanks for the inspiration Mr Mears.
Yes this is terrible grammar haha, I'm in bed and tired, I couldn't sleep knowing how bad I sounded.
I wish to hell Ray would do more videos like this today! I love the past catalogue but we need more stuff like this with an ethos on conservation and protection of nature!
One of the most significant figures of nature preservation of 20th century told by a contemporary real woodsman
Mr. Mears, I find these short films you have been involved in wonderfully inspiring. Both "We belong to it" and "The path oh Grey Owl" makes me want to get out there. For many years, you have been a great inspiration. I hope you will continue to inspire us, and teach bushcraft and conservation. Best wishes from Norway.
To anyone involved in creating these documents and especially to Mr. Mears......
Even as of this writing I am watching You to become more internally calm and to find hope in natural beauty vs. pain of living.
Your work is relatively new to me. You wouldn't know it for how much I talk about you because you've been an important difference maker in my thinking. Virtually any time I'm outside now (about a year) I think of you and also Les Stroud for company and what you'd each be encouraging me to see if you were there. I love to see the world through your eyes (as you share through media) and it has genuinely helped some dark moments.
Again, a true thank you to everyone who did anything to put these works together and to the First Nations people and those in alignment who constantly remind humanity of the imperative need to community with Nature.
A wonderful film, only wish it were longer. Ray you have passed on the flame from Grey Owl, and those who came before him. So much gratitude for all that you & Woodlore do to remind, reconnect & inspire. Your voice is needed more than ever..
In part Rays films with the Canoe, led me and my family to emigrate to Canada. I follow his films with pleasure. My Cree granddaughter lives just down the road from where Grey owl lived in Prince Alberta national park. It was a huge pleasure to see the park this summer. Canada is so big I know, I can't explore it all, but through these films I connect more with my new country. I stand on guard for thee.
This film should be at least two hours long!
That closing scene with the dragon fly going past his shoulder - just left me speechless. Amazing production with a potent message we need to hold close to our hearts. Thanks Ray and the team!
I was lucky enough to meet Ray Mears last year and had a chat with him about this film. I'd love to see him revisit Grey Owl for a longer film, Ray is a great presenter and the perfect choice for films like this.
Grey Owl not only talked the talk, he walked the walk too, with a hint of mischief thrown in that shows a sense of humour that is often lacking in some who try to get an important message across. Thanks for this reminder of how we could all make a difference.
Rob.
He is truly, a man of the wild countries with his love for all things natural, and free!
Thank you for sharing Ray
I've been in Mattawa, where it meets the Ottawa, and saw the area where Grey Owl would visit Anahareo, long ago. He had a wonderfully deep way with words. Tales of an Empty Cabin. What a spirit.
Thanks for respecting the intentions of Grey Owl.
Great message for all, respect the land that gives us our lives. Thanks.
An absolutely beautiful film.
Wow, such a great film! Its fantastic to see Ray working with a good production crew again. I really hope this is the start of a new partnership. We so need people like Ray to produce these high quality programs and get people excited and interested in the Nature. Thanks Mr. Mears.
Those that are blind to nature miss out on such beauty. Thanks Ray, for me you have always followed Grey Owls path.
My most meaningful UA-cam subscription. Brilliant.
True connection with nature.
Beautiful film. Thank-you for your wisdom, Grey Owl ... and your inspiration, Ray.
Fantastically produced film with a wonderful and important message.
Like any video Ray Mears participates in, this one is filled with beauty and thoughtful introspection. Wonderful.
Such an important massage. Thank you Ray! I could use this to conserve my ancestors land.
Thank you Ray for drawing attention to our wonderful natural world. If only more people would share your respect of nature and live in harmony with instead of taking advantage of her generosity.
proud to be Canadian thank you Mr. Mears. !
Inspiring!! I really like Rays out look to nature and how he interacts with her native peoples, so knowledgeable yet humble..
I wouldn't live anywhere else. Nothing better then the boreal forest. Nothing better then sitting in the forest watching the beaver work away, ducks swimming & the chance sighting of moose coming out for a snack. Beautiful
Thank you for this amazing video and the messages it contains! So beautyful pictures!
An absolute inspiration as always sir.
I try so hard, Everyday, to teach my Grandkids about Nature and how to Respect and Love It, just like my Parents, Brother and Grandmother Taught me. RIP Y'all, I Listened, and Learned!
Thank Y'all for such a Wonderful Video!
It's odd to me after a lifetime of being a woodsman, how Ray Mears can look at Canada and show me something familiar but in a different light, and I can learn from it. There are many voices on UA-cam that speak of wild sojourns, or wilderness living, but one must get past these surface skills and burrow deeper into why we even go out in the bush at all. The bugs, the carnivores that see us as sources of protein, the risk of injury, the risk of weather-related effects on our bodies...prolonged exercise and the pain from that, but we do these things.
I drove across New Brunswick this weekend past, and saw a raped landscape. It's been clearcut all the way from St. John to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The trees are small. Is it still wilderness? It's beautiful with the colours of the leaves at this time of year, but what did it look like before the pulp mills? When I was a teenager, I had a prospecting job and actually stumbled across some old growth white pine, way back in the New Brunswick bush on ground too steep to log. Wow. European cathedrals have nothing on mature Canadian forests. Grey Owl had the right idea, but there was still some original bush back in his day. He had it to compare to. Very little left now, and global warming is burning it up, or forest pathogens from other places are killing it. Is Ray Mears the Grey Owl of our time?
I once asked the Lord about his creation, and expressed concern to Him about how we were not being good stewards of his work. What about all the extinct species? What about the deserts and the vanished forests? Mankind had done these things and couldn't stop doing them. I'll never forget his reply, although I wasn't happy with it since I am a woodsman and see forests as churches of a creator so awesome that words cannot express it. Just as Grey Owl and Ray Mears have perspectives on wilderness, God has his own. He replied;
"I can always make more."
But, we can't. I was left with the realization that to touch wilderness and absorb its spirit is to be immersed in the finest, most profound prayer available to us. It's a song of living waters. It's the touch of Christ upon our skin. Perhaps, a hint of divinity and infinity in cycles of life. God made the wilderness and we can't.
A Micmac elder once said that beneath the soil of the forest, every tree is holding hands with its neighbours and we should hold the hands of our neighbours for communal strength. Just a little more wisdom from the same source where Grey Owl got it.
Keep up the good work, Ray Mears. Every step you hike, or every paddle stroke you make is just another word in the prayer that is your life. Time will take its toll and you will find, as I have, that you won't be as able as you once were. It forces you to slow down, but that's a good thing in this accelerated world.
May the God who loves you give you peace in the mists on the lake in the morning
May the God who loves you give you evergreen dreams
May the God who loves you bathe your dreams in clear mountain streams
And may the God of love walk at your side when the forests touch the dawn
Beautifully expressed, and said! ❤
What an amazing video ... legend right there.
Super, Ray! I'm in a delight! You returned, perfectly. Thank you from Russia!
Beautifully filmed and wonderfully narrated. A good message as well.
Thank you Ray, it was a beautiful presentation.
A superb epitaph to Grey Owl.
Beautifully shot video and a beautiful message. I would love to visit Canada and spend time in country like this.
Simply put...Beautiful.
Stunning cinematography, stellar message.
What a fantastic video, hope it inspires generations to come to get out and enjoy nature and to look after it
Fantastic video, thanks Ray Mears
The Difference between Grey Owl and Ray Mears is that ..
Ray Mears is Open & Honest about his Roots, where he is from, What he is.
The Sameness is found in , the Education and Honoring of the Land.
This truth is what makes Ray Mears a Greater Man.
I enjoyed this very much. Beautiful.
That is a really important topic you bring up here. Stunning videography and nature! Thanks a lot for sharing :)

+NorwegianWoods The question is : What can we give back ?
+Ade Larsen I don't think i possess anything that nature want or need. Thats the problem, what do I have that I can give back? In a way I think the only thing we can do is to stop destroying everything. Maybe the only thing I can give is respect.
NorwegianWoods Respect and LNT
+NorwegianWoods As a park ranger, naturalist, and woodsman, I think respect is the very best thing that you can have.
PABadger13 Respect for the nature and the attitude of LNT.
There are so many good points in this video spoken by all and not just Ray. I think if we stand outside of the cultural constructs in which we grew up we are destined to see ourselves and that is key I think in preserving nature. A touching or should I say inspiring video. ATB Mark.
Almost cried a bit
Wow I'm 16 and my biggest enjoyment is being among nature learning new skills gaining more knowledge about English woodlands and I hope as I grow up I spend time with nature in countries around the world expanding my bushcraft skills.
The first and most important part of learning is understanding and this video is a great start. Thanks Ray! by george said that!
Nicely done. As an ex-pat Brit who now spends a lot of time in the Canadian wilderness, I am constantly appalled at the irreverence with which both government and big business treat the land. It sickens me, but I still manage to enjoy what we have. It's still beautiful!
most wonderfully produced and very thought provoking film.. Thank you very much for this most beautiful interlude on my otherwise chore ridden Sunday...Wonderful
I forget how beautiful my own backyard is , Northern Ontario :)
Beautiful Ray, thank you...
been a follower of you ray for many years . although I'm much older than you it would be a pleasure to go on a trip with you when you are in Ontario
Excellent!! Big hug from Brazil!
Nicely done. Beautiful country.
Amazing, master! Amazing! Hugs from Brazil!
Great message and video, superb education : )
This was very well done. Makes me want to get out!
Finally subscribed to your stuff, thanks for your work and insights etc. I am trying to decide how best to get Off Grid sooner than later here in Canada -- elsewhere if needed. I have done my best to help people and wake them up to all these things, people are just not paying as much att'n to what really matters.
People are overworked, underpaid, this system we live in, as the 99% is sucking the money, lifeblood and existence out of everything. We have a fraudulent currency and belief system imposed on us by the "leaders" - I want to be Off Grid on land, self sustain myself and ideally bring a few likeminded people along. GBY Ray and your staff and people with you brother. All the best
As always, your videos are very much appreciated. Please keep up your good work. It would be great to see your spin on the American long trails, beginning with the Appalachian Trail. Your perspective would be a great contribution to preserving and growing the long trails. Big respect.
by the way Ray the cinematography is astounding on this one.
every now and than i focus to mutch on some things that are not all that important to begin with, and occasionaly puctures and meanings like these come by tap me gently on the shoulder and remind me that there are other things that are closer to what realy matters
That was beautiful, I know exactly what you mean right now :)
a truly beautiful and inspirational video, cheers craig
Absolutely beautiful
Very enjoyable thanks Ray and some great points about balance that people have forgot, if they do take notice its normally as a fad and for 30 seconds then they forget and go back to consume consume and self. I agree with the youth part very important to teach the young to enjoy and understand perhaps you should start something for them in the Uk.
All my feelings and love to the nature are coming up, while watching this vid, thanks ray
the path of the paddle...
regards Matt
poignant, beautiful and absolutely correct.
Beautiful. Thank you
Thanks Ray.
And all that help make this video
Brilliant camerawork and editing.

The best video I have ever seen........
If it's necessary for a man to harvest ten trees every year, it's his responsibility to plant fifteen in return. My friend's grandfather told me that when I was just a boy in the early 60's. I don't think many listened to his words. I've watched mankind stay on course towards disaster for over half a century now. Thank you for your efforts Ray; at least a few of us continue the stewardship. Peace
There is this strange 'call of the wild' feeling, when watching films of Goh Iromoto.
I've watched most of Ray's videos, series and documentaries and I had a really hard time to recognize his voice. But as always absolutely beautiful
What an amazing ten minutes.
