Very useful to know, and something I did indeed fail to mention. So keep that in mind when you're building up your towns, income from commerce can get out of hand for Sun Jian.

A thing you didn't mention about the faction is that Lady Wu (Sun Jian's wife) has the Fertile trait. This increases the likelihood of further children should Sun Jian stay alive and in the same area as her. I literally ended my Sun Jian campaign with 19 children.
I vaguely hinted at it by saying she can give you more children but I didn't straight up mention it, no. There's already so much information in these videos, if I looked at literally every character in each faction in detail it would never end.

If you've got Gavelkind, then once you die, say hello to 19 kingdoms fracturing your empire apart (insert CJ meme here). If you've got any other succession type, then every other 18 of the fuckers will have claims to your land, and say hello to war of the roses with 18 Henry Tudors coming to fuck you up and take your crown away. Thankfully this is Total War, so why stop at 19? You fucking virgin. Get 19 more then you can brag like a chad.

I recently found out that Mandarin became the main language of China mostly because Mao spoke it despite Cantonese being closer to ancient Chinese from around 1000 years ago.

Dynasty warriors are the hack and slash community. RotK is the more strategy, long game community. There is some overlap but the game styles are wildly different.
I vote for Zheng Jiang, since she's the only female starting faction leader currently in the game....and is perhaps one of the scariest Champion class Generals with her Poisoned Blade (inflicting significant damage to an enemy General before a Duel even begins) and Tenacity of Steel (making her deadlier the longer a fight goes on). She's also unique in that if you play your cards right, you may be able to finagle a deal with Dong Zhuo/Dong Min early on to marry Lu Bu to Zheng Jiang and nabbing one of the most powerful Generals in the game very early on.

Funny enough, even though everyone and the game itself, rightly so, recommend going south and building up a great southern empire, my Sun Jian Campaign took a whole other turn when, right after finishing Liu Biao, all my army was near Chang'an, which was completely undefended. Taking the opportunity, I marched towards Chang'an, took the city and the emperor, and vassalized the Han Empire. As such, conquering the south was no option anymore, and because my army was north already, it would have been a bad option either way. So now, my empire is at the North-Eastern Corner, the complete opposite of the usual Sun Jian Empire :D .
Honestly I found him to be the most OP character in the game. You can take the entire south without incurring any diplomatic penalties or facing any opposition, all the while gaining massive amounts of items and building a strong economy. While most factions go into the 3 kingdom period weak from having their strongest ally suddenly become an enemy, Sun Jian goes into it with a gross income of around 40k, 4 extremely powerful heroes, and so much gear that you can turn any no name general into Lu Bu.
Great video, I started a Sun Jian campaign myself and was quickly overwhelmed by war from all sides (did not go well). Taking your advice really helped a lot.
Sven Snider Yeah, it seemed like the goals the game was setting for me took me into untenable positions, particularly when the game sets you on a collision course with liu biao very early on. You need to hold the river port against him whilst somehow also taking the vassals out as well.
The best way to be succesfull with Sun Jian in the early game is just taking out Liu Biao asap. Once thats done you can easily take the south. Also keep Yuan Shu friendly. Give him the emperor seal back when he asks for it. He is going to be your best friend and is protecting you from Dong Zhou.
Sun Jian, the Lord of the South. By the time I met him, he already controlled most of the Southlands. It was wise to have a coalition with him as Cao Cao, so I could focus on the North and West.
I'm so pissed there aren't naval battles. The whole point of Wu and the battle of Red Cliffs is naval combat. Nevermind expansion into Korea during this period :/
I finished my run with Sun Jian. The faction is so good. Mercenaries have almost no disadvantages for the instant armies that they are, and with the money you get from the rich cities along the river, you'll always be able to recruit at least a few of them at the start of a turn. The AI doesn't seem to understand my stacks are usually almost a full retinue bigger than it looks.
Histroy fact: Sun Jian had a rough demise. When the Hans empire called the warlords to fight the yellow turban rebellion. That was the last time Sun Jian has set his foot at home. Him and his army made their way north to answer the emperor's calls. Soon after the whole Dong Zhuo event happen, he stayed north to fight the warlord. When the Hans empire begin falling apart, he finally decided to return home but majority of his force are already wiped out. He never made it home and was assassinated along the way.
Impressive work here, SmartDonkey. For the next F,action Overview, I'd hesitate between suggesting Dong Zhuo (gotta do all the group which had trailers... Guess it counts for Zheng Jiang too), or one of the Yellow Turban Commanders... Although it would leave the question of how to go with the YT's Tech Tree...
This guy is such a pain in the ass. Was playing bandit king and had conquer all the way down to cao cao and this mother had conquersed all of south China.
Yea when I was playing lei Bui i was busy fighting youn shou in the east but when I named myself emperor fken the whole west side is all colored in orange and I was like wtf? It was a tough battle.
only way i beat him on very hard was to peel away and vasselize his allies in central China. Honestly played three games and the guy in top left has never been a issue its always north vs south.

When I played as Sun Jian, during the late game when there were the three kingdoms (My competitors were Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan, but Yuan Shao him out) there was a battle which I won VERY closely. I had Sun Ren, Cheng Pu, and....I think it was Zhou Yu......against 3 of Yuan Shao's armies. I made a defensive (Well, technically win-every-time) formation, but the enemy broke through it and my army collapsed. Zhou Yu fled, but Sun and Cheng stayed alive, along with a few survivors. This battle highlighted why sentinels are overpowered. Sun stayed for longer and heavily weakened the enemy, but eventually ran away. Cheng survived because he had 110% melee evasion. He clutched me to victory.
I find it quite hard to maintain a lot of armies. Im at the end game, three kingdoms-phase and only have 6 armies. AI seems to have a lot more and always combat my single army with 2 to 3.
I managed to keep the seal, and basically followed the Yangtze all the way to the mountains, but now my problem is rising corruption due to going wide and public order. I know that economy in 3k is much more snowballing than other titles; but I still feel as though i'm missing something. I've gradually began to phase out some of the minor public order buildings for Confucian temples for bigger bonus to order; is this a waste or no? and how big do peasantry building chains have to be, before their income becomes decent? (Yes, I am aware of what the buildings do and have been stacking appropriate "colored" buildings to maximize commerce, industry, and peasantry income; but goddamn is it a trickle when I need a steady faucet for armies)
Started on hard and immediately got involved in a brutal war against liu biao shortly followed by yuan shu by the time i finished them off with one army (didnt get a chance to even secure the rest of my province) my ally liu bei retrieved the emperor and vassalized all the han dynasty. now my territory is a giant line in the center of the map. Now im in a grueling war against yuan shao whose vassalized almost all of china except for what lui bei controls.
I never understood why his campaign difficulty is listed as moderate, his location, generals, and units basically gives him easy mode, my first campaign that I won was with him, I managed to keep the imperial seal, and have him alive the whole campaign to the end, in my mind, I would give sun jian the easy difficulty and cao cao the moderate difficiulty.
Something to note, Sun Ce has an upgraded morale debuff ability which gives a completely insane -50 morale to all enemy units in the area. That's enough to instantly break most units in concert with fire arrows.

Tyler Moore Lu Bu is a massive asshole. He betrayed his father for Dong Zhuo and he later murdered the fat bastard because of Diaochan When Lu Bu got beaten by Cao Cao, he was protected by Liu Bei but he was double crossed by Lu Bu and stole his city. It’s a good thing Cao Cao had ordered the bastard to die
Playing as Cao Cao, I knew Liu Bei and Sun Jian would be surviving my wrath. Especially when I have been conquering west taking out Dongzhou and Ma Teng along side other factions before moving north to completely clear out each province and borders. But I have made friends and allies. It's funny that I'm allied with two bandits who I can destroy but also allied with Liu Bei the one who hates me XD. I'm still in conquest of taking over the southern west Barbarians before starting a war with Liu Bei and kingdom of Wu
Back in my day smartdonkey also gave advice on what army to build in his shogun 2 videos... i installed 3k a week ago and all factions seem like the mori in shogun 2. because there isnt a blunt bonus to a unit type (except liu bei) i can build anything...
Bonuses are defined by which type of general you're using, which legendary characters you get, etc. There's no "best army" for any faction, because there's way too many variables.
@@MrSmartDonkeyLP I like cav factions, and I'm still learning the intercrecies of the game. With this in mind, who should I pick for 1st campaign? MA teng? Cao Cao? Or the sentinel guy down south? MA teng seems to have great unique cavs, great eco and pastures near by, along with a fine heir that buffs cav. Cao Cao also has unique shock cav and unkeep red for every cav, not just the unique one, so I can start the cav army earlier than ma teng. The sentinel guy has the older son with those stupid good bonuses

Any tips to defend against Liu Biao since he has two vassels and Sun Jian, most likely have one army and its not even full. It says Yuan Shu would help but I didn't see him helping.
Attack quick. Soon after attacking that first city (jing something) I recruited a full army waited a turn or two and immediately attacked his vassels. Was able to take the farmlands and then defeat lui's army when he tried to attack by river.
On turn one, before doing any combat, you can give the seal to Liu Biao, and add some of your other ancillaries to get the value of the offer up to +15, which gives a +50 relationship boost. A few turns later you should be able to get a non aggression pact cheaply, and then you can do the same with his vassals, as they still have the ability to request permission to go to war with you at that point in the game. Once you rank up enough to get a coalition, I'd try to get Liu Biao. He is one of only two real threats you face (the other being Cao Cao) and you can have him keep Cao Cao busy if you are attacked. Since you will be mostly fighting low level han town garrisons, you can use cheap militia armies to take your lands, though I tend to splurg a bit on my second army to make sure I can hold up to Cao Cao if needed. Sure, with this method, you don't get the Jade seal, but you can immediately start conquering the rich southlands. You'll end up with the armor smiths and weapon smiths sooner or later, and they'll produce some amazing set bonuses that put even the Jade Seal to shame.

She can pick off any squishy generals (preferably commander/strategist) as the troops are marching. Then when the melee broke out she starts whacking soldiers left and right just like a normal vanguard
2:31 PM 11/10/2020 Should I start back up again? I forgot how far I am with Sun Jian with the latest update/patch. The difference Ive noticed with north and south is south is heavy with agriculture. I think I stacked some of the resources where its suppose to deduct a turn from building structures but it didnt (lumber?). Im still a noob at trying to learn what the build setup is for most factions but as Sun Jian you figure it would be agriculture but I think you will make more a turn still going for industry. North has the plains which is great for farming but I think most of south is agriculture I have to look again.
I just started this game, I'm finding it really hard compared to older total war games. I got betrayed by Yuan Shu and Liu Bao whooped my ass and took a settlement. Any suggestions on how to counter this?
Well you accidently play the real main history and ROTK version, i suggest you to play aggressively and take over jing province then made 1 stack army in border of your teritory-yuan shu teritory (dont yet to start a war with him but be vigilante) and allied with some warlord(perhaps cao cao but dont trust him and use him only to counter Yuan Shu), and then after jing province try to unite southern region and then start to unite chinese
Dude. With his commerce buffs, and auto filled mercenary retinues they should have classified sun jian as easy...once you get over liu biaos butt hurt in the opening turns with mercs at your side you have troops a tier above everyone else with no mustering time!! Just ransom troops on a win and disband/re-hire and you have armies back in seconds instead of turns. This of course is usually expensive but with how rich changsha and the surrounding Han territories are you can easily apply this tactic.
i loooooove sun jian. he has a good area around him a good character trait (heroism) and his son is fking nuts i think he might be the best vanguard in the game. im unsure on his early game strategy tho. i tried taking the 2 towns i tried taking only 1 nothing rly worked cause as soon as i attacked the second town an army comes from the north and just fks u up
Take the first town the game recommends and then just park it there. Build up a second army and then take whatever han province you prefer. Now you have an army up there to fight without having to take forever crossing the river.
Anyone know how the splash damage works? Is it like over the 10 sec, he deals 7.5k more damage to anyone around him when he is attacking? should he dismount before using this so hes locked in melee combat over the 10 sec?
Yeah, basically you can start a campaign with someone and choose to share the Mandate of Heaven through diplomacy, and then you'll essentially be in a co-op campaign.
Try whoever you want, there's strengths and weaknesses everywhere, best way to find them is by playing. Try Gongsun Zan if you want a nice safe starting location.
I don't know what the actual fuck went wrong but when Sun Quan became of age for me just as the same time as Zhou Yu entered my retinue, Quan isn't nowhere to be found for me to recruit and the joke of it all is that the next 10 turns while I'm allied with Yuan Shu and both Dong Min & Ma Teng declared war on Yuan Shu, I god damn saw that traitorous fuck serving Ma Teng instead of his own father. What an absolute scum. PS: I don't know if it's a bug or not cuz that happened to Cao Ren when I played with Cao Cao also. Even when he left, no warnings were given to me and when I wanted to employ him, he simply vanished.
Why would I? Or are you asking if I changed the music from the other Faction Overviews? If so, yes, the other song was getting copyrighted so I was sharing revenue, figured I’d switch it up.
He arrives at your court after a while, but I didn't include him as there's already enough to include and the faction overviews are more of a starting point and thus I tend to only include things you have at the start.

You forgot that he also has a well-rounded army with superior troops.
"Unlucky" should be their family traits for that generation, because their faction leaders tend to get ambushed and assassinated.

RedEye I’ve passed the hump with liu biao and I didn’t give yuan shu the seal either but he still seems to like me. I think I’m doing alright so far!

Probably in DLC. Just look how "accidentally" Korea is included in the world map. I bet it will be added in the future.

Him and his army made their way north to answer the emperor's calls. Soon after the whole Dong Zhuo event happen, he stayed north to fight the warlord. When the Hans empire begin falling apart, he finally decided to return home but majority of his force are already wiped out. He never made it home and was assassinated along the way.
Impressive work here, SmartDonkey. For the next F,action Overview, I'd hesitate between suggesting Dong Zhuo (gotta do all the group which had trailers... Guess it counts for Zheng Jiang too), or one of the Yellow Turban Commanders... Although it would leave the question of how to go with the YT's Tech Tree...

This guy is such a pain in the ass. Was playing bandit king and had conquer all the way down to cao cao and this mother had conquersed all of south China.
Yea when I was playing lei Bui i was busy fighting youn shou in the east but when I named myself emperor fken the whole west side is all colored in orange and I was like wtf? It was a tough battle.
only way i beat him on very hard was to peel away and vasselize his allies in central China. Honestly played three games and the guy in top left has never been a issue its always north vs south.
If its the seal I am thinking of. That seal in those days could effectively command the emperor's army

When I played as Sun Jian, during the late game when there were the three kingdoms (My competitors were Yuan Shao and Gongsun Zan, but Yuan Shao him out) there was a battle which I won VERY closely. I had Sun Ren, Cheng Pu, and....I think it was Zhou Yu......against 3 of Yuan Shao's armies. I made a defensive (Well, technically win-every-time) formation, but the enemy broke through it and my army collapsed. Zhou Yu fled, but Sun and Cheng stayed alive, along with a few survivors. This battle highlighted why sentinels are overpowered. Sun stayed for longer and heavily weakened the enemy, but eventually ran away. Cheng survived because he had 110% melee evasion. He clutched me to victory.

I find it quite hard to maintain a lot of armies. Im at the end game, three kingdoms-phase and only have 6 armies. AI seems to have a lot more and always combat my single army with 2 to 3.

I managed to keep the seal, and basically followed the Yangtze all the way to the mountains, but now my problem is rising corruption due to going wide and public order. I know that economy in 3k is much more snowballing than other titles; but I still feel as though i'm missing something. I've gradually began to phase out some of the minor public order buildings for Confucian temples for bigger bonus to order; is this a waste or no?
and how big do peasantry building chains have to be, before their income becomes decent?
(Yes, I am aware of what the buildings do and have been stacking appropriate "colored" buildings to maximize commerce, industry, and peasantry income; but goddamn is it a trickle when I need a steady faucet for armies)

I killed Wu in my Liu Bei playthrough, thinking about replaying my campaign lol
Started on hard and immediately got involved in a brutal war against liu biao shortly followed by yuan shu by the time i finished them off with one army (didnt get a chance to even secure the rest of my province) my ally liu bei retrieved the emperor and vassalized all the han dynasty. now my territory is a giant line in the center of the map. Now im in a grueling war against yuan shao whose vassalized almost all of china except for what lui bei controls.

I never understood why his campaign difficulty is listed as moderate, his location, generals, and units basically gives him easy mode, my first campaign that I won was with him, I managed to keep the imperial seal, and have him alive the whole campaign to the end, in my mind, I would give sun jian the easy difficulty and cao cao the moderate difficiulty.

Something to note, Sun Ce has an upgraded morale debuff ability which gives a completely insane -50 morale to all enemy units in the area. That's enough to instantly break most units in concert with fire arrows.
Yeah Yellow Turban has this crazy debuff aswell but not only on one general. You can literally recruite a complete set of generals with this ability.

Playing as Cao Cao, I knew Liu Bei and Sun Jian would be surviving my wrath. Especially when I have been conquering west taking out Dongzhou and Ma Teng along side other factions before moving north to completely clear out each province and borders. But I have made friends and allies. It's funny that I'm allied with two bandits who I can destroy but also allied with Liu Bei the one who hates me XD.
I'm still in conquest of taking over the southern west Barbarians before starting a war with Liu Bei and kingdom of Wu

Back in my day smartdonkey also gave advice on what army to build in his shogun 2 videos... i installed 3k a week ago and all factions seem like the mori in shogun 2. because there isnt a blunt bonus to a unit type (except liu bei) i can build anything...
Bonuses are defined by which type of general you're using, which legendary characters you get, etc. There's no "best army" for any faction, because there's way too many variables.

I like cav factions, and I'm still learning the intercrecies of the game. With this in mind, who should I pick for 1st campaign? MA teng? Cao Cao? Or the sentinel guy down south? MA teng seems to have great unique cavs, great eco and pastures near by, along with a fine heir that buffs cav. Cao Cao also has unique shock cav and unkeep red for every cav, not just the unique one, so I can start the cav army earlier than ma teng. The sentinel guy has the older son with those stupid good bonuses

Any tips to defend against Liu Biao since he has two vassels and Sun Jian, most likely have one army and its not even full. It says Yuan Shu would help but I didn't see him helping.
Attack quick. Soon after attacking that first city (jing something) I recruited a full army waited a turn or two and immediately attacked his vassels. Was able to take the farmlands and then defeat lui's army when he tried to attack by river.
On turn one, before doing any combat, you can give the seal to Liu Biao, and add some of your other ancillaries to get the value of the offer up to +15, which gives a +50 relationship boost. A few turns later you should be able to get a non aggression pact cheaply, and then you can do the same with his vassals, as they still have the ability to request permission to go to war with you at that point in the game. Once you rank up enough to get a coalition, I'd try to get Liu Biao. He is one of only two real threats you face (the other being Cao Cao) and you can have him keep Cao Cao busy if you are attacked. Since you will be mostly fighting low level han town garrisons, you can use cheap militia armies to take your lands, though I tend to splurg a bit on my second army to make sure I can hold up to Cao Cao if needed.
Sure, with this method, you don't get the Jade seal, but you can immediately start conquering the rich southlands. You'll end up with the armor smiths and weapon smiths sooner or later, and they'll produce some amazing set bonuses that put even the Jade Seal to shame.

2:31 PM 11/10/2020 Should I start back up again? I forgot how far I am with Sun Jian with the latest update/patch. The difference Ive noticed with north and south is south is heavy with agriculture. I think I stacked some of the resources where its suppose to deduct a turn from building structures but it didnt (lumber?). Im still a noob at trying to learn what the build setup is for most factions but as Sun Jian you figure it would be agriculture but I think you will make more a turn still going for industry. North has the plains which is great for farming but I think most of south is agriculture I have to look again.
I just started this game, I'm finding it really hard compared to older total war games. I got betrayed by Yuan Shu and Liu Bao whooped my ass and took a settlement. Any suggestions on how to counter this?
Well you accidently play the real main history and ROTK version, i suggest you to play aggressively and take over jing province then made 1 stack army in border of your teritory-yuan shu teritory (dont yet to start a war with him but be vigilante) and allied with some warlord(perhaps cao cao but dont trust him and use him only to counter Yuan Shu), and then after jing province try to unite southern region and then start to unite chinese
Dude. With his commerce buffs, and auto filled mercenary retinues they should have classified sun jian as easy...once you get over liu biaos butt hurt in the opening turns with mercs at your side you have troops a tier above everyone else with no mustering time!! Just ransom troops on a win and disband/re-hire and you have armies back in seconds instead of turns. This of course is usually expensive but with how rich changsha and the surrounding Han territories are you can easily apply this tactic.
i loooooove sun jian. he has a good area around him a good character trait (heroism) and his son is fking nuts i think he might be the best vanguard in the game. im unsure on his early game strategy tho. i tried taking the 2 towns i tried taking only 1 nothing rly worked cause as soon as i attacked the second town an army comes from the north and just fks u up
Take the first town the game recommends and then just park it there. Build up a second army and then take whatever han province you prefer. Now you have an army up there to fight without having to take forever crossing the river.

Will there be tier lists for all the different unit types in Three Kingdoms? If yes, do you already have a rough idea when you will start with them?
There will be top 5's and such, impossible to say when though, need a lot more practice with all units still, I'd say at least a few weeks.

Make the mercenary buildings and wait a while, you also can't recruit them outright, they can only be in an army led by an actual general.

There are multiplayer campaigns, but they’re more fluent, you can go co-op or h2h at any point throughout a campaign.
Yeah, basically you can start a campaign with someone and choose to share the Mandate of Heaven through diplomacy, and then you'll essentially be in a co-op campaign.
How do you guess which recruitable character in court is a spy?
It's difficult to guess, but for example if someone is a high level and has some nice gear, be wary.

I don't know what the actual fuck went wrong but when Sun Quan became of age for me just as the same time as Zhou Yu entered my retinue, Quan isn't nowhere to be found for me to recruit and the joke of it all is that the next 10 turns while I'm allied with Yuan Shu and both Dong Min & Ma Teng declared war on Yuan Shu, I god damn saw that traitorous fuck serving Ma Teng instead of his own father. What an absolute scum.
PS: I don't know if it's a bug or not cuz that happened to Cao Ren when I played with Cao Cao also. Even when he left, no warnings were given to me and when I wanted to employ him, he simply vanished.

He arrives at your court after a while, but I didn't include him as there's already enough to include and the faction overviews are more of a starting point and thus I tend to only include things you have at the start.
