  • One man holds back the barbarian hordes on China’s northern frontier, Gongsun Zan, The Iron First Genera. He rules rules his lands with the same unflinching martial mindset that governs his army - on the fringes of the empire, military precision is the difference between seeing an enemy on the horizon or in your tent with a knife. So its no wonder Gongsun Zan governs with an iron fist.

In Total War: THREE KINGDOMS, players step into the shoes of one of 12 legendary warlords in this age of glorious conquest. Although the ultimate goal for each leader is the same - unite China under your banner and forge the next great dynasty - the preferred means and methods can differ greatly. Every warlord has their own unique personality, motivations, and experience, while all shape the way they play and the kind of conquest they favor.

    VIDEO NOTES:
I purposefully presented the fight between Gongzun Zan and Liu Yu BEFORE the war with Yuan Shao. According to the sources, The Battle of Jieqiao between Gongzun Zan and Yuan Shao occurred in 191, with Liu Yu's invasion later in 193. For the sake of narrative I presented it first, as he played no part in these events, and it was jarring to go back to him in the middle of the story of the war with Yuan Shao in the latter half of the video. Though it is possible the beheading of Liu Yu was partially inspired as an act of spite after Gongsun Zan's defeat at the hands of Yuan Shao.

you know what I just realised? You're doing what History Channel used to do back then, using the Total War engine to depict great ancient battles (Decisive Battles was the name I believe). Back then they used Rome's engine which although dated now, looked cool and epic enough then.
I watched 3 minutes and felt that I just had to point this out. Thanks for making me relive a great memory.

Actually he had been called 白馬將軍, it literally means General White Horse. Because of that when he fought with Huns, his elite vanguard units would all ride on white horses, thousands of them. These guys were all volunteered to fight(義從), with iron will and steel weapons (like light saber 1800 years ago), good riding skill and archery. They dash to the enemy like a huge white wave on the Northern plain of China. Huns feared him much, and always ran away even before a real battle.

Yes indeed, he actually had his crossbowmen carefully hidden behind his seemingly thinly spread frontline to provoke a charge. Later he is able to intercept an enemy messenger carrying a messege calling for renforments and uses that information to lure Zan out of his fortress into an ambush by making his army look like the expected renforments. Also, not to mention he was extremely brave and often fought in the vanguard of his army + charismatic, and excellent orator. However, when he faces off Cao Cao, one of his close advisors diffects to the enemy, and feeds Cao information about Yaun Shao's supply line and where his supplies are located. And the destruction of this supply deport is one of the key factors that causes lose of morale and the eventual defeat of Yuan at the hands of Cao Cao.

I watched it, and they fail to mention that one of Shao's advisors was playing double agent. The location of his supply deport was given away by the traitor with the exact number of guards and defences , also Kings & Generals claim Cao Cao intentionally turned his supply wagons toward the charging enemy, as to distract them and to keep em pre-occupied till he reformed his battle lines. Although this did happen, it is not certain that Cao planned for it as explained by the Kings & Generals video .It's more likely that Cao simply ordered a hasty retreat and Yuan Shao's men got utterly distracted by the site of potential loot, inadvertently offering Cao a chance to counter attack. This is important because Yuan Shao loses his two most senior and prominent generals in that early engagement. I am sure the lack of their expertise impacted the army's efficiency, and general competence.

I know that a northern tribesmen dlc would give this faction much more flavour, however I'm personally a bit tired of roaming hordes. Attila may be my favourite total war but four "and a half" of the last six titles of the franchise ( Attila, Rise of the Republic, Warhammer 1, thrones of britannia and the Mortal Empires campaign) already have nomadic-centered factions. I'd rather like CA focusing on Korea, Vietnam or some warlord/tribe which could fill the non settled parts of the south instead.

Sounds like he was just... well kinda bad at his job. Sure he pacified the North, but fighting tribes and Barbarians with imperial troops isn't exactly a hugely difficult task. -And while this is a SUPER unfair comparison as Romans are well, Romans, they were able to head fucking DEEP into enemy territory centuries and centuries before Gongsun was around without constantly taking losses in raids. (Yes I know some Roman armies didn't fair too well, but considering who they were invading and how deep, its incredible how little losses they took in France and Germany against the Gauls and Germanic tribes). This really just tells me that Gongsun was just a dictator/fascist who felt like his army was very disciplined and strong, when it reality they were painfully average. (Like seriously, elite soldiers killing commanders and defecting?) On top of that, he was *hardly* a military genius as charging cavalry (light cavalry too from the sounds of it) into infantry is like... Tactics 101 on what not to do. Almost as bad as sending Dothraki on a suicide charge into enemy forces!

For people who are wondering why the in-game horse pastures resources are to the north, I recommend that you guys watch Kings and Generals's videos:
"Greco-Chinese War Over the Heavenly Horses": ua-cam.com/video/g6Rphg_lwwM/v-deo.html
    and
    "The Han-Xiongnu War" : ua-cam.com/video/iQ7jDwF2Z2w/v-deo.html
The gist of it is that China has always had issues with the nomadic tribes of the north and Qin Shihuang smashed them hard enough that they were a non-factor until the first Han Emperor "Gaozu" Liu Bang who completely f-ed up the balance of power and entered into this multi-generational tributary agreement called "heqin" where an imperial princess would be wedded off to the Xiongnu's khan with tributes and whatnot in exchange for "peace". For those of you who are familiar with British history, it would be dangerously similar to danelaw.
Anyway, the Han Emperor Wu (we call him Han Wudi) really hated the Xiongnu because of this and was frustrated that the Han cavalry couldn't keep up with the Xiongnu's horses, so he sought to trade with the Greco-Bactrians for their horses in order to breed and raise a new generation of Han cavalry that could fight the Xiongnu and this is where the "War for the Heavenly Horses" came into the picture. After this war, Han Wudi spent about 20 years breeding these horses so that he could field them en mass against the Xiongnu and sent his generals with this new generation of cavalry to annihilate the Xiongnu. After this, the Xiongnu no longer posed a threat and many of them settled and integrated with the Han with some forming the backbone of the Xiliang cavalry and others forming the backbone of Cao Cao's heavy cavalry.
Of course, once the Sima clan established the Jin Dynasty and ended the Three Kingdoms, they also f-ed up their relations with their local Xiongnu tribes and is its own clusterf-.
If people are wondering why the Xiongnu didn't take walled settlements, it is because they didn't have siege engines and also because Chinese crossbows from the Warring States through the Han Dynasty are stupidly strong. When one-fifth to one-quarter of your army is crossbowmen and an "entry-level" crossbow infantry has to be able to pull at least 75 kilograms of drawstring weight, you really don't want to become a pin-cushion. Those crossbow bolts aren't a joke, they're meant to pierce literally everything and this is also why you don't see siege towers in ancient China anymore. I recommend that you watch the 2002 Chinese movie titled "Hero" (directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Jet Li) for an example of what pre-Han Chinese crossbows were like. The hand-portable crossbows that you see later in China but are more popular in Europe are along the lines of "just enough to kill" whereas the ones from the Warring States through the Han Dynasty were meant to kill literally everything: infantry, chariots, horses, people hiding inside a building, etc.
