Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV 2018 review | carwow Reviews

- The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the Italian brand’s first ever SUV. Its sporty Giulia-inspired looks and rakish cabin certainly help it make a good first impression, but its charm will have to be more than just skin deep if Alfa Romeo wants to steal buyers away from the Audi Q5 and Jaguar F-Pace. I take a detailed looks at this left-field Italian off-roader to find out what it’s like to drive, see how practical it is and help you decide if it’s the ideal SUV for you.

WOW it's almost as if Alfa has made a SPORTS Utility Vehicle. Something that has sadly shifted definitions. I drove one today and it is AMAZING to actually drive.
I love how Alfa does integrate the entertainment screen into the dash. I can't understand why others like Mercedes just put the screen, like if the had put it in the last minute
its not that great, you have to look down at the infotainment screen, taking your eyes off the road. it is better to have it on top of the dash, in your field of view like BMW, Merc, Audi etc
Exactly. My A3's one pops up. I dont have to turn my head at all to look at the screen, but when cars had their displays right down in the centre console, it was horrible to look at an control on the move. The Audi ones contract as well (most of them) apparently it keeps them free of dust longer. Also looks amazing !
Oliver Newell dude you drive an a3 so please shut up. and no it doesn‘t look good it looks like on any cheap car. it also looks like it‘s aftermarket
Okay cool great thanks.
South4153 Completely pointless and unnecessary comment.
Those wood panels! Somebody get me one!
I love the matte wood! Very Volvo
.Steve Edward I don't like wood panels on any modern cars, i prefer metal or black or carbon fiber trim
Thorbjørn Madsen Alfa has wood of various colours or metal of various textures to chose from
booring2 I don't like ANY wooden trims on modern cars. I prefer metal or black trims. Wooden trims only looks good on older and classic cars
Marco Sartori That i don't care about. I just don't want wooden panels when i buy a car.
It's their first SUV and it already drives better than a Macan or a Jaguar. Let that sink in ;)
Gabriel Marcu i see this on the side of the road after a few years ..
Yeah but the macan is much more reliable and the new macan does ride a bit better
@@matthewsmith5774 don't talk shit about a car and it's reliability when it's just come out. We'll talk in 10 years i'll bet good money that you will have spent more on repairs with porsche than with a new alfa
Manuel Auer bro I love the Alfa it’s new I understand but the Porsche is still a much better car and repairs are extremely rare with Porsche. But I’d go with a Stelvio Quadrifoglio over a Macan any day. But talking base Stelvio I would have to go with the Porsche.
@@svenlima Rally cars have nothing to do with SUV other than AWD...
And this is Alfa FIRST SUV!
I've recently bought a stelvio absolutely love it brings a smile to my face every time I drive it and never had a car where so many people comment on how nice it is all the time.
It's has it little flaws like any other car you own cause no car is perfect to drive/looks
Hi....I'm in the market for a used Stelvio....are you still happy with your Car?
I love mine also. It doesn't play on the road. It's rare, so alot of people never heard of it or even seen one and I love that.
@@cassandrakeise7799 is it petrol or diesel and what’s your fuel expenses like
I actually love the design of the interior. A refreshing departure from the Germans especially with the screen being integrated into the dash and not looking like an afterthought!
Gareth F it’s not an afterthought with German cars, it’s ideal for people when driving, if you try a German car you will see that it works out well having it near the top rather then lower down on the centre console. BMW’s and Audi’s have very good positioning but Mercedes system is crap so forget about them
South4153 it might be perceived that way but realise that VW spends billions on R&D so realistically they have pretty damn good placement of their technology
yes germans are pricy but they are ahead of anyone else and have a lot of experience. Their tech is the best.
MrWalker...are you sure? Do you know that a lot of technological and electronic system installed on german cars are designed and produced in Italy?? Do you know "Magneti Marelli" (FCA brand)??
Right on Gareth, it looks so much nicer.
I think the the wood looks gorgeous
He loves it on the Volvo, but hates it here...
hate the wood does not work and makes it look like something my teacher would drive in the 70s....metal finish much cooler
I work as a private driver and Alfa has been sponsoring my company by lending us 3 Stelvio's (2L gasoline, 280HP) for the summer. I've been driving this car for 4 months now and it has been a true delight. It is a driver's car. The punch, the steering and the way it handles the road largely make up for the limited amount of space behind and the few dodgy plastic bits.
It does one thing exceptionally well, something other SUVs have failed miserably, to drive

macan? cayenne?
F Pace?
No, AR S QF for the win. ua-cam.com/video/CJTWplJ6Fo4/v-deo.html
F-Pace is sh!tbag. Maybe the Macan can be better ;)
If this car overtakes you in Northern Italy? Stelvio pass on the Stevio pass?
I tested one today, the 2,0 turbo petrol with 280bhp and the handling was brilliant=)
Actually handles better than many sedans I have driven..........wtf, =)
I have always hated SUVs, but now I think I have to consider one after all.
The Giorgio platform is shared by 5 Alfas !
The most we'll known are the Giulia and the Stelvio, so saying its not very comfortable and then saying it's racy - it's describing a Giulia!
It looks like a SUV, but is more like a tall sporty family saloon!
You're spot on when you say it's a raised up Giulia, 'cause that's exactly what it is:!
the steering is very direct, the throttle very responsive and the suspension firm/sporty!
The Giulia QV is an amazing sports saloon, now imagine that on a SUV - it's unbelievable!!
After A-B'ing the Evoque and the Stelvio (also saw Carwow's latest review on the 2020 Evoque), I am very happy that I chose the Stelvio instead. The RR does have more "class" but the AR is a heck of a lot more fun for the money and really offers an enjoyable ride. Quiet and respectable when you want it to be, and like a bat out of hell when you open it up.
Everyone that shuns Alfa for its reliability issues has never owned a German car 😂 my 5 series isn’t reliable at all, so I wouldn’t necessarily write Alfa off for past reliability issues tbh
I agree BMW are not reliable, but I find the dealer network good at fixing your car, and sourcing parts. Not so sure about the Alfa dealer network. Heard a funny story in 2001 about how one of my co workers needed 3 months to get an Alfa car door after he hit a lamp post. I dont know what the dealers are like these days.
i have owed the Alfa Quad for almost 16 months now. Not even one issue. So depends on whom u ask.
I love my Bmw and the dealership in Italy is awesome. They checked my car for a strange noise instantly, even when they had other work. They took about 30 minutes and I didn't have to pay one single penny, out of warranty. Problem was from aftermarket exhaust which wasn't mounted by Bmw. They fixed it quickly.
@@Thatcardude207 because a car shouldn't have an issue in the first year and and a half of ownership. That's not saying much.
Not only it is exceptionally beautiful but driving it on bendy Italian roads it's a true pleasure!
I've been waiting for this video since Alfa announced the Stelvio!!
Boy Alfa's getting back in the market of good cars, even though I tend to hate SUVs, this one's brilliant!
Not buying because the glove box can't fit a 1.5 litre water bottle >:(
Buying an Alfa for its utility is like buying a porn film for its imaging brilliantness. It wouldn't get more blurry.
Because the only bit about it that's not usable or practical is the glovebox? Who cares anyway, there are other places to put your things.
Wtf people apparently don't understand jokes these days lmao
I never know what is in my car's glove box, because i don't need it - Credit card + driver's licence card only the two things i used to take with me
Style.
I bought a 280hp petrol model in 2019. I still have it. I still love it. It handles like a dream, 0-60 in less than 6 seconds, gearbox with the paddles is very responsive. Sure, the infortainment is a bit naff butr it has Apple Carplay / Android Auto so it really doesn't matter. It's an absolute workhorse, I use it for everything.
0:53 sounds like he's saying butt holes
Massive room for two buttholes.
Bo'le of wa'er
This is probably the first video I disagree with almost everything Mat says. He complains about a lot of small stuff that shouldn't be a problem for the Stelvio's potential buyers. It just feels like pointless bickering =/
edmonneto most of the time he is like a manager doing macro management and nagging 🧐🧐☹️
Who are these morons who go around reviewing cars then touching random parts of the interior then saying it feels cheap?! I can't remember the last time I drove a car and started touching parts of the door card or dash with my finger tips trying to judge the quality of the plastic where my hands don't belong anyway... Whining about the wood is very poor too, Alfa Romeo likes wood trim just look at some of the early 156 with wooden steering wheels etc; the wood was optional anyway so tap and whine away instead of being fair.
He has to talk trash about the alfa And praise German rivals...And he s doing exactly that...a lot of car rewievers are doing this, they get paid from VW...I am not stupid, I know Giulia And Stelvio, je s complaining about things you wouldn t even noticed, stop praising shitty German plastic Quality Matt !
I just bought a new 2022 Stelvio sprint. I love it. It drives better than most cars.
Only one word is fitting to describe this car: Magnificent
Ca a car be art? Yes, baby, when it is a Alfa Romeo!
As an American, the use of gloveboxes in British car reviews has always puzzled me. Most of us use our gloveboxes for registration/insurance papers, owner's manuals, small maintenance equipment (tire pressure gauge, screwdriver), and maybe sunglasses. If you live in a particularly high crime area, it's the default storage area for a gun too. Basically everything that should be concealed, but would still need to be in instant reach of the driver in an emergency.
We'd never dream of using the glovebox for superfluous personal items like smartphones and water bottles, unless the glovebox is big enough for both essential and personal items, which it almost never is. So, since y'all use the glovebox as just another storage compartment, where does the stuff you need with you to drive go? Minus the gun of course, since that's illegal there.
Sean Kurth Generalising much it seems,
Some people in America probably keep that stuff elsewhere. Those people are going to regret it when they get eventually get pulled over for some reason or another, and have to produce their papers from a place the police don't expect it to be while convincing the officer that it's not a gun. It would make sense to keep it under the center armrest as well, I suppose, but a lot of cars don't even have an enclosed storage compartment there, especially older cars and very cheap ones. Storage drawers under the seats are also getting rarer and rarer these days, as power seat mechanisms get more complex and take up more room.
British car reviews, though (carwow, carbuyer, etc) act as if the glovebox is supposed to be big enough for personal items, and say it's a bad thing when the glovebox is inevitably not big enough. They test for it every time, and not once has the phone test or big bottle test ever worked. Of course it can't fit a water bottle, because that's not what the OEM intended it to be used for, it's not much bigger than it needs to be for the manual, the registration, and a tire pressure gauge. I'm sure not all British car reviewers do that, but the most popular ones on UA-cam do, and I've rarely seen an American review even mention the glovebox unless there's something unusual about it.
Sean Kurth
The Brits use gloveboxes for storing large bags of crisps and bottled water.
Quirks and Features Is there a column I could read on the internet?
Sean Kurth You wnow what's even sadder? That nobody uses the glovebox for its intended purpose - putting your gloves is it :(
3:56 that's the sportiest-looking space saver wheel I've ever seen
That’s Italians for you. 😂
Just really the fairest review I've ever seen. I'm from America and I wish our bloggers would do as fair and cool review here. I had to watch it a second time because you cover some much so quickly, again outstanding. I really love this car now because of this review. Thanks so much. I'm sub'd!
0:50 "there's room for 2 buttholes"
I own a 2018 Stelvio 280 and I've been super happy with it. The annual services prices are a bit on the premium side but haven't had any issues so far. Only changed rear brake pads and it cost 100 euros total.
Still happy with it?
What are the differences between the 2018 and the ones that followed?
@@user-iz8qe4gp7m Lots of issues from the 2018-2019 were resolved in the 2020 model. Very reliable long term cars
Well done, Alfa Romeo!
First SUV in my life which i found pretty nice and i want to buy because it is a Beast (remember its 50:50 weight distr. and the World Record which set at Nordschleife)
LOVE the review made me feel like I was in the vehicle! Detailed but to the point !
i think Mat's car review series are by far the best
The car is beautiful
Flatron i call this the Guilia "Stilto"
You must be kidding. It's an abomination.
Wally Custard it’s gorgeous, Chrysler has outdone themselves.
You must also think cat shit is gorgeous if you think this is gorgeous. It's uglier than a septic wound on Quasimodo's bell end.
"its looks like a shit cuz i dont like it" dude you really need to learn about different opinions and tastes
Matt trying to talk Italian is even more funny than him trying to talk German.
Damn it looks so good
Great review as always ..... having a test drive soon...
I'm not into SUVs but I really like the interior..the wooden accents are really nice and the exterior is unique
Why does no one mentioned subwoofer in the back >:c no one likes music or wat
Finally, I thought I wouldn't see a test of Stelvio in UK
Nice review Mat, but when there will be Quadrifoglio version of Stelvio :)
Looks like a gulia thats been smashing it on an all inclusive cruise for 6 months
Yeah Costa coffe was founded in UK by Sergio e Bruno Costa but just because this was the easy and cheap way to import the coffee in uk
Been waiting for this for so long..
Overall, a good video review.
I don't normally like wood trim but it's quite nice on that dash I think
Well, in terms of space, the Mercedes, Audi and BMW only have 4% more boot space.
The Macan and the Volvo actually have about the same percentage less than the Stelvio. So, I'm not sure about it being so bad in this regard.
As for the noise, we can have noise reduction as an option at the cost of a bit more weight.
You were driving it in Dynamic mode which is why the suspension ride was a bit firm. Normal mode is much smoother.
Good review as per usual. Could also please review Mazda 6 wagon.
Cracking competition in the small SUV range now. Jag, Merc, Lexus, Volvo all have excellent cars along with this. No real loser hear. All comes down preference.
SUV’s don’t get more beautiful than this!!
Josh Bacon yes they do
graham bishop How?
Theirs a lot of suvs that Ste better, better made better equipped better looking

I really have to hand it to Matt to come up with all the punts in almost (If not) every review 😆
What a beautiful car

Great car and brand. I love it a lot.
Waiting for your volvo xc60 video after having it

Also the 2018 X3 pre-launch.
Ordered mine yesterday. The test drive was awesome. I'm having the 'Nero' and it looks great. Feels really plush inside and well put together.
My parents bought one 3 weeks ago. This car is absolutely brilliant.
@@daxosm wow, that's really good to know. Thanks for the info. I like the fact you don't see many on the road.
GJ F that’s right. Poland roads are dominated by German cars. In fact, we paid about 17k$ less comparing to audi Q5 or GLC with simillar spec... and the way it handles :D
@@daxosm yes well it's the same here. I had a BMW once and was glad to get rid. The Alfa is pretty expensive but still cheaper than the German equivalents out there.
Anyway I pick it up in a couple of days so time will tell won't it? 😁
GJ F wish you having a good time with your new Alfa :D
Im tired of people only shit storming about reliability. Reliability was a problem for Alfa Romeo ages ago...
Having a topic make them feel expert, but actually they don't have much more to say about cars.
This is the result of Top Gear's jokes: Alfa=reliability, rust, real petrolhead. A lot of comments are about this 3 things
I don’t get it either. I have 2004 147. No rust no mechanical issues.
Same with my Alfa Romeo 156 2.0 TS from 1999. I dont get these comments shit storming about Alfa's.
Own the 2002 AR 147 till now..no major problem at all..
yep never had any major reliability issues with any of my Alfa Romeos. Had a lot of interior build issues with a Giulietta but that is the worst car Alfa have produced for a long time.
love your videos !haha
Love this car a lot
Its an Alfa. Alfas are Alfas. If you want a car, this is it. But if you just want a car this isn't it. Its hard to explain but every alfa driver will understand what Im trying to say.
Erik Ciwesson every Alfa owner understands your just spouting generic clichés. You might as well have posted the 'passion' and 'soul' guff.
ErikC17 good on you, mate...;-)
ErikC17 a drivers' car!
Ric Viera yup...and I want one so damn much.
The side profile of this Alfa looks like a SEAT IBIZA !! (previous generation) see here www.gumtree.com/p/seat/2007-seat-ibiza-1.4-automatic-stylance-5-door-hatch-only-52000-miles-/1294794411
This is so beautiful! If only BMW would streamline the interior of the 3 series to match this.
Hey Mat, volvo xc60 detailed review please! I need to decide.
The most beautiful suv ever made
I wish estates were as mainstream as crossovers
perfect and beautiful car i prefer this car among rivals
Clean car design and interior
"You do have to lean to push the backs down...which is a bit annoying"...God forbid you have to lean...
I love it
That is one of the best looking suvs
Typical alfa
Also its looks similar to cx-5
JunaidRaids I agree looks like a cx5
JunaidRaids Yes, it's an uglier CX-5.
The stelvio was released far before the new CX-5
agree Alfas latest family design looks too much like Mazda for my liking
Yes, it is a CX 5 Chinese fake.
Where is the last scene filmed, the one where you say "you should consider the Stelvio"? Looks like a gorgeous place.
I love your videos, keep it up please! Only try to remember that we aren't all native english speakers, so we miss some phrases! For example 7:09 , surprisingly autogenerated CC worked correctly :)
Since when you became official promoter of Audi?
They pay him, don't worry...but he would choose Stelvio instead of q5.
Why do you put so much value on satnav? Doesn't everyone use google maps on their phone nowadays? Am I wrong?
Kaan Altinay , exactly! I do have satnav on my 2017 Honda Civic Sport, but guess what : with Apple car play, I always navigate with my smartphone
I think it's just more conventional for people that the satnav is already in the car, than for some. But Google maps is definitely the better satnav choice
+Kaan To me, using the phone + mount you bought in ebay is just a cheap / ugly looking option. If you are spending £30k on a car, may as well spend on satnav, instead of using a cheap mount.
Ross B2 , have you heard of Apple CarPlay ?
Because it's part of the car that supposed to be technologically advanced. Why does anyone have to explain this.
That's gorgeous
Beautiful interior
Off centre plates are an Alfa tradition
Well you cant compromise the design just because you need a plate on it :D

Legally you need it on in the UK :D
It would be nice if you added an annotation when you show MPG showing L/100km also :)
So many puns in the first 20 seconds. Subscribed!
If you wanna see Afla with success, you've got to review more of these.like the Guilietta veloce
Really? He is fussing about having to push the rear seat down and the spare tyre cover isn't attached at the back?
The design 😍😍😍😍
Looks beautiful

i love the look of these, and seeing this up my ass in the rear view mirror is kinda scary, unlike seeing the gle or cayenne. i just love the agressive looks of alfas
interior is fantstic
Love this car.
What is with the obsession about more screen? The analogue dials are just fine.
Consider?? Cmon Matt...
Eddie Dantès it should have been shortlist
At least shortlist. Best driving SUV and cheapest and best equipped, and with the longest warranty in it's class!
Commentator541 it’s not the best equipped or best to drive or cheapest
I love my new Alfa. It is a great car. No problems at all
Believe me, in gun metal with the right wheels/spec these things look incredible. Wide eyes everywhere...
perfect car. wonderful
well, when it looks THIS good, who cares about sensible things?
Henry Rahardja Giovanni Vattuone Alfas are like that beautiful Italian girl that everyone would like to have for a night but no one would like as a girlfriend as she would take all your money and constantly cheat on you.

Reliability isn't a problem for Alfa Romeo anymore -.- Fx. go searh this up "My Mercedes is broken after only 1 month"
I love the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio and even the Giulia. Its such a refreshing new product that hasn't been "Americanized"(Over-sized, slow and gimmicky. Weak engines for "Fuel Efficiency"). The clean, simple interior design is quite welcoming. Its a drivers car for people who want to focus on a fun technical sporty drive.
