Could you do a throwback analysis on "The Devil wears Prada", notably the "real" Emily in Paris? Read somewhere in the comments that this is the only Emily that would have deserved to be in Paris, which I find hilarious.
For real I'd rather watch an in depth long form video of Devil Wears Prada film than any part of this show that is just so subpar. We need to stop giving this show more attention than it deserves.
Say what you will about Carrie Bradshaw, I always believed that she dressed herself. Emily's outfits look so contrived, colourful yet somehow completely joyless. And speaking of joyless, don't get me started on that rigid perfect hair. Also, who the hell goes running braless in an unsupportive asymmetric top?
This is the best comment on the difference between Carrie’s and Emily’s style! Emily’s outfits aren’t just bad. They look contrived. SJP not only pulled off some outrageous outfits but I did believe that it was Carrie’s own style. And finally someone mentions those rigid hair waves! That hairstyle makes her style look even more atrocious because that stiff hair doesn’t go with the quirky clothing.
I almost never wear a bra, and yet I will still put a sports bra on when I go running. I don't think any person in their right mind goes running in an asymmetrical top, like why do that to yourself
"Joyless" is really a great description. I remember how Fields always used to add these quirky details which I really loved (a belt, a statement necklace ...).
She and the two guys Emily befriends at her company, are literally the only good things in that show. Actually, without Emily the show would be fairly enjoyable if it just chronicled the lives of all the French people and had her super rich Chinese friend as the main character. They’re all super likable, but inexplicably all befriend the most obnoxious ugly American “main character” stereotype ever created.
We as a community need to address Emily’s hair. Somehow the stylist found the most annoying middle part and wave pattern possible, and I honestly respect that
I actually really like her hair. I’m not sure why everyone hates this show. It’s not as bad as other shows like river sale because it makes sense. Yes it’s not perfect on cultural references but why hate on just her hair? It looks much nicer than Carrie Bradshaws hair. It doesn’t look like it holds all day, but then you should hate every show because no show shows their actors hair naturally and they do touch ups every scene.
@@sarahbowtell4843 Not in the first season. It didn't suit her face. I also have curly hair and sometimes I wish it was straight so maybe I'm biased. But I never hated the show just because of a character's/actor's hair. I loved the show.
In my mind, Patricia field hates Emily just as much as we do which is why she keeps putting her in fugly clothes. Until Emily becomes a better person, she'll forever be stuck in these clothes
@Ananya Subramani i agree with that, but if that's true (which I believe it is) then the fact that early 2000's are back should have helped her? A lot of Carrie's style could be done today so I don't get it 😭
@@1957DLT Carrie was a mess but she had some great looks. And there was something about SPJ that pulled off some outrageous outfits. I believed that Carrie had her own style that she enjoyed. Emily’s style is always atrocious and Lily is too sweet looking to pull off the borderline ones. And I definitely don’t believe that Emily pulled together those outfits.
The problem is that Carrie is HELD accountable many times for her actions (Charlotte and Miranda always remind her when she is making a mistake in the OG series), she is supposed to be "imperfect" and "messy". Meanwhile Emily is portrayed as this all put together woman and "good" person....but the truth is that she isn't.
Exactly!! Carrie’s style is also discussed and woven into the narrative of the show and her evoloving character. With Emily we’re left scratching our heads at best or annoyed that none of this makes any sense.
Omg that more than anything pisses me off, when her friend that is the heiress says something like “she’s my best friend and the best person I know” I literally said out loud “girl have you met this chick?” Everything about this show is cute and fun, DESPITE her being in it, if they removed her and just loosely connected all the characters without her it would be a good cute show, instead of something we all hate watch lmao
I really like Carrie’s style but the character is soooo annoying! I only watched satc for the other characters. As for Emily, I really dislike the looks and the character! 😂
Emily is a horrible person. The fact that she's constantly confused and sad when someone doesn't like her or likes her horrible work ethic shows that she is self-involved a.f. as well. She went to work at a foreign country without knowing the language, didn't consider how her coworkers when it came to her work attitude nonsense, slept with her potential client's underage son, lost her client's one of a kind design necklace, doesn't understand the date system of the foreign country she works in which would have caused a faux pas had she not had slept with her friend/potential client's boyfriend. And how casually she still pines after a CHEATER who is still in a relationship with his girlfriend while she is also in a relationship with someone else. This fool is not only horribly unprofessional but she's also a very bad person and there is no way you can't paint her as a good person.
i think the main reason is that emily doesn't wear the clothes, the clothes wear her to the point where they become their own character and that should never be the goal when costuming for a film or show. and i don't think that's lily's fault, emily's outfits just never make sense for what the show tells us about her personality.
I couldn’t even finish the first episode of season 2. Not because of the storyline, it was because her clothing assaulted me with such force I was getting ill.
Absolutely. And the hair. If they wanted to show that she was so “different” why didn’t they go for really stereotypical preppy/American style? It would have had some fans and she would have looked good/pretty but would still stick out in her French office and then pivot her into more City looks as time went on. She would have looked out of touch, yes but this style make her look clueless and unaware (which I guess she is). But so unlikeable!
As an American who did live in Paris (didn’t speak any French, worked in marketing, the whole shebang), my friends and I dressed as minimalist and muted as possible. If you dress like you’re trying, you’re instantly garish and laughable. Emily would’ve been judged on the street, let alone in a workplace. It’s heinous.
@@katc2040 That’s not true in large cities like New York or LA. Not everyone would dress in sweatpants or athletic wear to work. Especially work, you should try to be professional and look like you rolled out of bed. Also that’s for a regular job, Emily is in marketing so she is expected to look even more dressed. Yea she outdoes it and she should look more like Slyvie but I like the dreamy ness of it all. To me, no one would wear a tutu like Carrie Bradshaw especially since her job is only being a writer.
@@nostalgia545 most people that arent youtubers or wealthy dont live in LA or New york, and im not talking about at work, although LA seems to be the opposite in terms of professional looking work attire
@@jeanievan4037 no, no its not for the average person. people exist outside of the west and east coasts you know. and from the way you both type, im guessing you're nowhere near my age either. I live in a big city but i still live in the south so its weird to look out of place or to be noticeable. Yall can not just tell me my experiences arent true lol.
In my mind Emily is purposefully dressed this bad to along with the narrative of the clueless American that tries to show off every single branded item they own/ create a flashy appearance (for the show of course)
yeah but there should still be a way to dress someone like that with it being at least entertaining and not so genuinely offputting . cuz it irks and kind of discredits and makes the whole show unlikable
We had “ non -uniform “ days here in the uk once every year so you’d come in trying to impress every pre teen at school wearing every bit of obnoxious colourful patterned crap you had …I now wish Emily’s workplace had a uniform
I think Emily's clumsy style is a metaphor for what Luc or Julien said in the show, about how you can't regurgitate French culture back at a French person and expect them to like it. Emily's wardrobe reflects how she's an in-between space that doesn't know where to go. She is so desperate for the Parisian fashion experience, but cannot let go of her American loud buy everything sensibility. She wants French Fashion the American way. And she's also between two friends who influence her. Mindy's loud but well put-together style is a confidence and self-dependence that Emily wants for herself. Camille is also a lot of the person that Emily wants to become-she has the chic art job, and the picturesque french family, and the hot chef boyfriend. Emily tries to be both of them at the same time. So i think her style is very much, wanting Camille's effortless grace and sleek silhouettes but wanting the loudness and confidence of Mindy. Emily is all about thinking she was so sure of herself and her plans and her actions but finding that she actually doesn't have everything put together, that she doesnt really still know what she wants or who she is. And that echoes back to the dillemma she has in the ending of season two.
Even though there is certainly some intention to her looks they should not necessarily be so incredibly ugly. Her trying to be Parisian without getting it could have been so much better. The show is entertaining enough but if you want to throw up every time she wears a different look it is distracting and not helping the scenario.
I came for the roast, but I stayed for the badly photoshopped images of Emily taking a selfie of the stores she should have shopped in. Thank you for this wonderful additional editing flourish
No it isn't because no one thinks she looks good. She's rather an example of no matter how skinny and beautiful you are, some outfits are just bad and will look bad despite a thin frame and cute face.
Why is it ok to bash her body type. If you call people fat it is viewed as fat shamminng, but calling her skinny is fine???? Lilly Collins has always been quite skinny.
Either Emily should be a Zara / H&M girl and dress tackily but not designer… ooor her character should seem a bit more interested in fashion… because for a girl that owns that crazy of a wardrobe, with many designer pieces , for her to NEVER show interest or knowledge about any fashion whatsoever, seems a bit weird… I mean if the idea is to make her the next Carrie, give the girl some storyline that shows she is a fashion girl… frustrating
I mean, yeah. With her budget... I'm a 25 year old living in Argentina and here h&m, Zara, Abercrombie or Forever21 are upper middle class clothes. I, for example, dress with those brands, so... It would be normal for Emily to dress like that at her age and with her budget as I said before. She is not rich, she is just a normal girl with a normal job, lol.
I agree with you on the Zara/H&M girl. Like her or not, you get the vibe Carrie was cool. She went to sample sales, had up and coming designer friends or connections at PR agencies. Emily seems to have an insane budget and no taste. The hair and the hats also kill me.
Yes they should have Emily dress in more H&M and Channel with dabbles into Coach, Michael Coores and Tory Birch for purses. It makes more sense for Emily (at her age and possible income bracket) to take utilitarian clothes or vintage finds and use styling to elevate her look. Then we could see her in contrast trying to keep up with her fashion and grow in her styling as she grows in France.
I think the main problem with Emily's outfits is that a lot of the color and styling combinations look like they were pulled straight from 2013-2016. Even current pieces seem to be styled as if they were trying to emulate trends from eight or nine years ago. For example that rainbow jacket, the mint green and white dress, the overuse of bright sequins, the horrible clashing patterns etc. Everything looks way too colorful and overdone, like she can't wear neutrals. I get that she's the main character but it's really strange considering the other characters look much more current.
The thing I didn't like most about the outfit is the fact that they are not weather related! The serie should be set during summer and they even say that it is scalding hot in Paris, which it is during summer especially because of the lack of AC, but nonetheless we see tons of jackets, blazers and long sleeves, it doesn't make sense and puts you out of the setting
@@jlopez7346 I think that the gloves are because one of the costume designers owns a brand that makes those fingerless motorcycle gloves...so that's kinda sketchy lol
From what I've seen in Paris, the women there are much classier (or at least, when they have a non-classy style, it is purposeful and coherent). That said, Camille certainly looks classy close to Emily, but then again, so does the dirty leek.
@@harveyspecter1855 for sure but it’s still a show about fashion she can’t wear only basic clothes. I’m just saying that she’s accurate in the way her outfits are built, the colors and the materials that are chosen for her
@@aaliyahmembia6572 not understated enough. Class is more expressed via timeless high quality pieces (max mara, nice tailored pants, a nice scarf, a good bag, quality leather shoes, etc.)
I think Emily's clothes are so loud and all over the place because they represent her character who tries too hard to impress ,fit in everywhere, thinks everyone likes her but actually is ignorant , just makes a mess and not really likeable ....
Thanks for pointing that out. This has been my understanding too. Alfie also refers to her clothes as ‘silly’ in the French class. I have a feeling that we will see Emily’s ‘transformation’ into a chic avatar in the seasons to come
Lol. I think so too. Plus actually it’s not like this YTber is very fashionable actually. And the hair. No idea why he doesn’t look at the mirror and dress better himself. 💀
@@leilakennedy7736 Gabriel was always unlikable.. he had been flirting with emily since they met even when he had a girlfriend .. this season just intensified his actions more ..
I feel like they know what they're doing with Emily's styling. All other characters are more toned down and serve as foils to her imo. Their more grounded looks show how outlandish and ostentatious she dresses in an attempt to be ~PaRiSiAn cHiC~ (the reason I think they know what they're doing is that they had Sylvie say it: the French are having their culture interpreted and fed back to them (paraphrasing). Emily is interpreting what she THINKS being chic and dressing French means and of course she's missing it. I think you called it out around the 16:00 mark. I do wish that they would tone her down as the series goes on to show her trying to truly immerse and integrate into French culture though
⬆️ this. Emily is supposed to be unlikable at this point in the story arc. She is the American trope invented by the French, mirroring the French trope invented by Americans back at them. I think this show beautifully summarizes the bizarre and amazing relationship our two cultures have: like step-siblings bound through a marriage of history and war who will always have each other’s backs even if we will never understand each other.
Emily is young, finding her way and can afford to be experimental. Almost everyone goes through that phase. Sylvie looks impeccable always and her look reflects her evolution. One thing the stylists have done superbly is to work with Lily Collins' body shape
While I agree that the way Emily dresses isn't good, I don't agree she has to wear famous brands either. She could be just stylish, the clothing doesn't have to have an expensive price tag on it... I really think this should a question of style (whatever it may be), than referencing to prada or whoever. I think the show would much more interesting if it was realistic about what kind of clothes they can afford (especially Mindy who's supposed to be broke), e.g. shopping at second hand or flipping clothes or sth
Omg. I’ve got to stop but I have to comment on every comment that mentions the hair! The super prissy waves! Even at the beach it didn’t loosen up, she’s on a yacht and she’s got long doll hair (and that mullet dress with crazy sunglasses with the hair - I screamed I was so offended). Sure they are contrasting between French women and their “undone” hair like Sylvie. But there are a few stops in the middle between undone French hair and stiff long uniform waves. Could she have a few hairs out of place? Mix up the centre part? Something!
I hate how everyone was saying the styling this season was better! I think it totally got worse, especially Camilles fashion was better and way more believable in the first season. Most of Emilys outfits this season were just painful to the eyes.
@@isam1542 yes, but I thought there were some cute outfits in season 1, like the jeans with the V.W jacket or the gingham combo. All in the sense that Emily was wearing what an american might think french chic looks like. It had some trendy pieces as well. Season 2 was just atrocious, she looked like she was from another planet.
Yes! Why did they do the dirty to Camille? Everything was too much. The red sunglasses. The Balmain jacket and Patou wide leg pants. Take her back to her season 1 more pared down looks.
Everyone keeps mentioning how IRL Lily Collins is such a wonderful person and nothing like Emily, but it’s not like this series is “just a job” for her on the same level as, for example, for the actress who plays Camille. She is one of the producers and she seems really committed to it and I believe have enough clout to object to at least some of the more controversial elements, yet she chooses to just distance herself and keep up her “good vibes only” public image.
Very true. It also bugs me that the costume designers go out of their way to highlight her skinniness. Which bothers me because it’s so obvious that Lily has an ED. Why is Lily allowing the first episode to have a scene where she runs and it shows her incredible running time? What’s the purpose of showing that?
@@tc3693 I’m not accusing anyone of anything. Lily herself has said she’s had an ED. Anyone who has eyes will see that she has relapsed again. And I wouldn’t say anything out of respect. Except for the fact that the show is making a point to show off her skinniness at every opportunity which is irresponsible. The producers are irresponsible. Emily herself, as an executive producer who’s had treatment for her ED, should not allow the show to highlight her crazy running time that doesn’t add anything to the story. She has to know full well that all the fatphobic messaging on the show is harmful to young girls.
@@BbGun-lw5vi recovery looks different for everyone and I don’t think it’s positive or demonstrative of ED survivor ally-ship to accuse someone of relapsing
@@tc3693 Like I said, I would normally not say anything. But in this case I feel we all have a responsibility to call out the harm this show is causing. Especially to young, impressionable girls. And unfortunately, Lily’s ED is tied in with the show’s problems due to the writers and costume designers. And Lily being an executive producer is also a factor that I considered.
I feel like Emily's outfits are just not trendy or nowhere near desirable to wear. For example on Gossip Girl, it definitely fittet the New York preppy aesthetic without mocking the fashion industry... Emily is just a whole caricature of a white woman who got into fashion 3 hours ago.... Plus her body shape is almost never taking into consideration while dressing her
Her size is nearly never taken into consideration while dressing her. I suspect some of the pieces are borrowed and had to be given back, which is why sometimes they look so bad on her. If some of those cost 10k a piece, that would explain it.
@@criskp6861 imo she’s way too skinny, borderline malnourished in the way she looks. There were a few times when she wore bare mid-riff clothes or open back and all I could see was how Collins is dangerously thin and the show keeps on trying hard to glorify that fact.
I think Luke would really enjoy Villanelle’s style in Killing Eve, cause she mixes a lot of colors and prints with more chic styles and she always looks really cool
One of my favorit Emily looks was the purple Valentino dress she wore to the party in San Tropé but honestly, the retail price is 10.000!!!! How would she ever be able to go NEAR that??
"Emily in Debt" it's more realistic. Her job pays between 60k and 80k a year so... that's pure nonsense. And it's the reason I give up. So many possibilities to explore and they took the easy "just don't think" route.
@@mireille916 Anyone who has followed Lily’s career and seen her older movies like Mirror Mirror (where she was thin but healthy) knows that she’s struggling with her ED. Look for yourself if you don’t believe me. She was already underweight in season 1 of Emily in Paris but she lost even more weight. Look at her neck and collarbones. She’s lost all the fat in her face. I gasped when I saw the bones in her back when she was wearing the pink bow dress She’s spoken in the past about her ED. I really hope she gets some help soon. Although I’m very troubled by the way the costume designers are taking every opportunity to highlight her skinniness with their clothing choices.
Emily's wardrobe is that of a wealthy woman, yet she is a girl who lives in a small apartment. Where does she keep all these expensive designer clothes and accessories?
the only thing about her style that matches her personality, is her go-to hairstyle, which gives me 2010s influencer with a demographic of 12-year-olds, vibes
They tried so hard to make her so fashionable that at the end it looks like the clothes are not hers. Even more, some of the outfits make her look older than she is. It's just my opinion. Nice video!
Julien’s suit with the blue undershirt was my absolute favourite look of the season! He and Sylvie’s costumes show that they know what they’re doing but they are dying on a hill over Emily. She severely needs a makeover as a condition of working for Sylvie’s firm in the next season
I basically finished the season because of Sylvie - the Rick Owens, the elegance, the high-low looks, were fantastic. While I get that Camille's character was looking for power because of the breakup, it was disappointing that a lot of the pieces were ill-fitting on her, which seemed distinctly un-Parisian and out of character (like the denim overalls that fit very odd around the pants and waist). Totally agree that Camille's birthday dinner outfit was very Zara tries Chanel - not bad, but I was tuning in hoping to see some fashion inspo that I wouldn't see walking through the shops in my city on a random day. Emily's bow dress was sooo literal, she wanted to be a present for her birthday, and it's tacky and makes me dislike her character more, but in that case I almost think that was the point haha, very in character perhaps.
Hear me out: Emily IS supposed to be outrageous and embarrassing to watch. She tries so hard to be likeable. I think when she gets a reality check, she will discover her true style.
It's just not sensible. For someone in her career position and her age, she would not own such pieces. And she is just too outrageous. There's no growth or character arch in clothing or in story.
If I’m being honest i kind of think that Emily’s “style” suits her , like it definitely suits lily Collins and it makes Emily seem like this “quirky” unlikable character , but like consciously cause we all want to hate on sometimes, like Emily being unlikable is one of the the reasons why many people talk about this show.
But I don’t think the show set out to make their main character unlikeable. If they did that’s a bold strategy. You get times when side characters become more popular but you at least start with making the main one likeable. It’s season 2 and there is zero sign her character has picked up any dressing tips from the French. And she dresses so inappropriately for the office. Are we meant to believe she wore one strap lace corset top dress to work in her Chicago job? So she’s adapted her style to Paris and that’s what she came up with? Help us all. (Don’t even get me started on the hats but at least they covered the hair).
The whole point of Emily's wardrobe is to make her seem like an outsider who's at odds/clueless with French fashion even though she's "into fashion." As she chooses to live in France rather than being forced into it, it would be cool to see a stylistic transition. But I think the outfits are intentionally outrageous. A character who is unlikeable to her coworkers in the show being genuinely unlikeable sounds like success on the part of the costuming team and the writers lol.
I agree, I think if she starts dressing amazing because she has finally grown up a bit and sees past her american naivité in the next season, our lovely costume designer can do a mic drop. i absolutely love how much I hated emily this season - feeling like a victim, making no choices, ruining everyone's life. Great writing! :)
Yet, how is she supposed to be able to afford that huge, garish wardrobe of clothes? And is the character supposed to be stupid? Because some of those choices are blatantly idiotic.
I'd really like to see Luke cover some of the looks of performers in A COLORS SHOW. The visual experience is such an important part of the show while allows the artists to take their twist on the concept :)
The whole time I was watching these series, I just kept thinking how massive her apartment would have to be to keep all these clothes . Also her salary must be enormous to be able to afford such a colossal wardrobe. I know it’s all supposed to be in good fun but when it is this far fetched it loses any kind of plausibility. 6000 outfits later I’m exhausted by the ridiculousness of it all 😂😂😂😂
I work in that industry. She would not be earning that much to own pieces like that. Also at least Carrie's character the money for outfits were justified....
I always think they want to make her Blair Waldorf but Blair was wealthy upper class where it was normal to wear something extravagant, but Emily is just regular girl and it’s looks weird
Well, tv shows like this have well paid teams of costume designers that have every opportunity to succeed. I think because Drag Race has people (including amateurs) putting together outfits with limited resources and time, it would be kind of meh to critique bad looks. Maybe if he did the best outfits in a season?
Totally agree about your opinion on dolce and gabbana !! I am totally over that brand the only thing I have left from D&G is some sunglasses I bought 7 years ago.
The black dress with the big pink bow is from Danish brand Rotate, it's one of their signature pieces. I find it utterly unlikely that Emily's character would know where Danmark is located, let alone wear a dress from a Danish brand.
I AM SO HAPPY THIS IS HERE. I have watched the Emily in Paris Season 1 review at least five times. You are so funny and so iconic. Thank you for bringing the facts.
Luke, your videos just continue to get better and better. It really impresses me the way you effortlessly communicate your thoughts in these critiques, not a word out of place. It’s just plain fun to watch.
for me, the biggest problem with the looks inside the show is, that its so far away from reality.. I love Patrizia Field, and I had the great pleasure to spend some days with her for the promo of the first SATC movie, so I know a little about the background of her choice for SATC, but with Emily its even more unrealistic in terms of the amount of money the looks cost - may I missed the part where its announced that her family is rich, but she could never afford this outfits and pay her rent as a normal person in Paris..
If her family is rich enough for her to buy all these clothes I imagine she would also have a proper rich persons apartment. Her wardrobe is insanely unrealistic just from the perspective of closet space. There’s no way she has space for all these items.
I have never watched a single episode of Emily in Paris and I never will but I hope for at least another 6 seasons and a movie because I don’t want this highly entertaining UA-cam videos to ever go away. Come through educational fashionista!
I love really colorful clothing and enjoyed a majority of Emily’s outfits, but as always your knowledge of fashion history, construction, and tradition really sharpens my eye in how I experience fashion. Much appreciated!
The fact that Emily is running without a sports bra is worse than wearing an asymmetrical top. Bc idk about u, but my girls hurt if they are not properly supported and protected during exercise.
I like Lily very much, from all the interviews I've seen and read, she's such a sweet and down to earth person. I don't know how much more critique she'll be able to endure starring in this show, honestly.
She’s one of the producers so she could switch it up if she wanted. Change the wardrobe, change the direction of the character, stop her being a cheater that somehow makes herself the victim.
sadly.. i worked at an LVMH company and most people there were so stupid and indifferent that they didnt' even know or care how to pronounce their own brand names.
14:40 I managed an all women’s nude spa (in Seattle not Chicago), and none of the women from any culture acted so prudish as depicted in the show. Of course people like that are out there, but as someone who was around tens of thousands of naked women in America, it seems pretty inaccurate.
I don't like that word as I feel it implies that people more discreet are somehow weird or that its not the norm. In America, from what I've seen across states, Emily's reaction is normal.
omg so much to unpack here. What confuses me most about this show is that Emily’s style simply doesn’t match her personality. There’s nothing written into the character that would explain the ubiquitous, tacky and inexplicable styling choices. It’s as if Patricia Fields is soooo unable to understand the concept of truly having a lack of style, so she throws insane colours and patterns at the problem and hopes it sticks. It’s not like Emily is just your average coworker with no sense of style, she has a deliberate and intentional over the top style. It simply isn’t believable when that’s done with things like Hermes bomber jackets and whatnot. Also, I am always thinking she must be freezing to death. Camille comes and goes but really, I would love to see her in more jeans and more Parisian casual chic. Great review!
Replying to myself, lol…. Why put Camille in a tailored suit to attend an outdoor birthday party? Unless she was coming from work and she’s in some kind of super profesh career, she would never wear that. Emily’s outfit was also inexplicable and again, hypothermia-inducing but that’s just par for the course.
@@jocmtl I'll reply to you! You'd think with the cheating being exposed,Camille would wear a bold colour or something to symbolise what she's going through when she finds out. They could've used the opportunity to put Emily in something more toned down,I mean she just got exposed!
I don’t always watch every video but you have such a way of speaking about clothes I always pop back in. Have you ever thought of doing celebrity videos breaking down several looks they wear?
One thing I found really distracting was the main characters slender frame. At times the outfits accentuated her very small build in a bad way. I won’t speculate on any eating disorders or health problems, I just hope she is looking after herself.
I noticed this too which is interesting since Collins is a producer on the show so you'd think she'd be aware of the harm it could cause. She's had an ED in the past and has spoken out about it but I don't know if she does now

The plan for Emily’s clothes seem to be every part is must be a statement piece. I’m sure parts of each outfit would be great when paired correctly, but they seem to be actively not wanting to.
They work so hard to point out how skinny she is in her clothes. I dont have ED, but I do have body image issues and the way they focus sooo much on her midriff and skinny fits makes me physically uncomfortable. I protect myself by skipping episodes etc. But I watch plenty of other shows without reacting this way, so I feel like there's a large difference in how they do it. I cant put my finger on what it is, but it makes me very uncomfortable. Normally i would figure the actress has no power over that... but Lily Collins is a producer and has power in this production.

Right. The hair makes no sense with the outfits. Looks strange & out of place.
this video just prove sylvie is truly the main character of the show. she is fabulous in every scene. saving the show.
I couldn’t agree more!!
💯
She and the two guys Emily befriends at her company, are literally the only good things in that show. Actually, without Emily the show would be fairly enjoyable if it just chronicled the lives of all the French people and had her super rich Chinese friend as the main character. They’re all super likable, but inexplicably all befriend the most obnoxious ugly American “main character” stereotype ever created.
Honestly so true, I love her style. She is my inspiration for when I go into my late 30s.
Was watching the show yesterday and thought this very same thing
We as a community need to address Emily’s hair. Somehow the stylist found the most annoying middle part and wave pattern possible, and I honestly respect that
I actually really like her hair. I’m not sure why everyone hates this show. It’s not as bad as other shows like river sale because it makes sense. Yes it’s not perfect on cultural references but why hate on just her hair? It looks much nicer than Carrie Bradshaws hair. It doesn’t look like it holds all day, but then you should hate every show because no show shows their actors hair naturally and they do touch ups every scene.
Stiff doll hair 😬😭💀
@@nostalgia545 you didn't like Carrie's hair??
@@sarahbowtell4843 Not in the first season. It didn't suit her face. I also have curly hair and sometimes I wish it was straight so maybe I'm biased. But I never hated the show just because of a character's/actor's hair. I loved the show.
Yes, her hair style is really outdated! I think it is purposeful though. Her character is not supposed to be stylish.
A lot of Carrie's style could be done today so I don't get it 😭
@Ananya Subramani yesss exactly! Tbh what she's doing with Emily wouldn't fly back then either, but I see the inspo from that era

Emily's fashion is like the 2010's Disney kids grew up, but never actually evolved from their fashion.

some of Emily’s fits reminds me of Carly from iCarly
The problem is that Carrie is HELD accountable many times for her actions (Charlotte and Miranda always remind her when she is making a mistake in the OG series), she is supposed to be "imperfect" and "messy". Meanwhile Emily is portrayed as this all put together woman and "good" person....but the truth is that she isn't.
Exactly!! Carrie’s style is also discussed and woven into the narrative of the show and her evoloving character. With Emily we’re left scratching our heads at best or annoyed that none of this makes any sense.
Omg that more than anything pisses me off, when her friend that is the heiress says something like “she’s my best friend and the best person I know” I literally said out loud “girl have you met this chick?”
Everything about this show is cute and fun, DESPITE her being in it, if they removed her and just loosely connected all the characters without her it would be a good cute show, instead of something we all hate watch lmao

I don’t get it. Emilys style is both the most garish AND the most boring at the same time.
i think the main reason is that emily doesn't wear the clothes, the clothes wear her to the point where they become their own character and that should never be the goal when costuming for a film or show. and i don't think that's lily's fault, emily's outfits just never make sense for what the show tells us about her personality.
I couldn’t even finish the first episode of season 2. Not because of the storyline, it was because her clothing assaulted me with such force I was getting ill.
Yer PF has lost her touch it's sad
It angers md that none of the colours or patterns or texture are ever coordinated and never matches
It's like the stereotypical fashionista that comes to a boomer's mind when they hear someone likes fashion
Atleast that's my take on it
I agree that Emily's outfits make her even more unlikeable.
That's exactly how it is in America too lol if you're in anything other than athlestisure or jeans it's garish and out of place
@@katc2040 That’s not true in large cities like New York or LA. Not everyone would dress in sweatpants or athletic wear to work. Lol yes we have this here as well 😆
I think Emily's clumsy style is a metaphor for what Luc or Julien said in the show, about how you can't regurgitate French culture back at a French person and expect them to like it.
Makes sense the styling still makes me angry but your theory makes sense.
Even though there is certainly some intention to her looks they should not necessarily be so incredibly ugly. Her trying to be Parisian without getting it could have been so much better. The show is entertaining enough but if you want to throw up every time she wears a different look it is distracting and not helping the scenario.
I feel like this is too smart for hollywood
But mindy's style is even more hideous, it's not put together at all
Well that would be interesting if the show fleshed that out somehow.
I came for the roast, but I stayed for the badly photoshopped images of Emily taking a selfie of the stores she should have shopped in. Thank you for this wonderful additional editing flourish

Emily in Paris is the embodiment of "is it a fit or is she just skinny."
my vote goes to skinny
No it isn't because no one thinks she looks good. She's rather an example of no matter how skinny and beautiful you are, some outfits are just bad and will look bad despite a thin frame and cute face.

Yes to this!! I’d love to see them both in the costume department for films and shows in future.
Yeah it makes no sense that she's wearing all these designer pieces, both in terms of her character and the price tag.

What I don't understand, is why everything Emily wears needs to have a waist belt. 😳
And a kimono jacket!
Cause Lily collins has a snatched ass waist
My guess is to emphasize her girlishness and her small waist.
And fingerless gloves, yuuuuckkkk
@@jlopez7346 I think that the gloves are because one of the costume designers owns a brand that makes those fingerless motorcycle gloves...so that's kinda sketchy lol
Camille’s styling is actually extremely accurate of how a wealthy Parisian woman in her late 20s/early 30s would wear
Camille's is actually still a bit excessive.
From what I've seen in Paris, the women there are much classier (or at least, when they have a non-classy style, it is purposeful and coherent). That said, Camille certainly looks classy close to Emily, but then again, so does the dirty leek.

And unrelated to my above thoughts. You are KILLING it with the Courreges jacket mention/edit. We love to see it 👏
The show would be more boring if Emily's looks were toned down though in my opinion.
Emily is young, finding her way and can afford to be experimental. Almost everyone goes through that phase. Sylvie looks impeccable always and her look reflects her evolution. One thing the stylists have done superbly is to work with Lily Collins' body shape
Speaking of Gossip Girl, I'd love to hear what you have to say on their looks, like where do you stand on preppy?
I love how the entire consensus is that "this show's fashion is decent, until you look at emily's"
Mindy's back story is that she is loadedd. This has been referenced several times in both series. She is DEFINITELY not broke.

In both seasons those rigid waves make her outfits even worse. It doesn’t go with her supposedly quirky, fun style.
Stiff doll hair 💀
Very true. It also bugs me that the costume designers go out of their way to highlight her skinniness. Which bothers me because it’s so obvious that Lily has an ED.

for me, Sylvie is the fashion stopper in these series
Loved your video. Sylvie is the sole saving grace of this show considering how they butchered Camille both in terms of fashion and character
Julien’s suit with the blue undershirt was my absolute favourite look of the season! He and Sylvie’s costumes show that they know what they’re doing but they are dying on a hill over Emily. She severely needs a makeover as a condition of working for Sylvie’s firm in the next season
Where is part 2? Leaving me high and dry waiting for almost two months for what's going to be the best vid ever 😭
Emily's perfect hair waves are boring and I'm tired of it.
As a Chicagoan, running in puffer coats (winter coats) is pretty realistic here. There are people who run along the lake mid winter.
I loved it when Camille outed her as a cheater in front of a whole table of dinner guests. It was what Emily deserved.
I havent seen the show but is she intently supposed to be unlikable?
@@ytuseracct no not really
I would love to see Luke review the fashion on Killing Eve. Especially with the show being on its last season
we low key need a video focusing on just sylvie’s fashion
Yesss 🔥😩👑 pls
Please!!!!!
6000 outfits later I’m exhausted by the ridiculousness of it all 😂😂😂😂
aaaaalll that money for those indecently expensive clothes and accessories yet she still looks badly dressed.
@@benzaiten933 yes they just seem to swamp her, too over the top, trying to create eccentricity never works , it should be more instinctual I feel
I work in that industry. She would not be earning that much to own pieces like that.
Also at least Carrie's character the money for outfits were justified....
@@ladylizcreates7719 totally agree, it’s all a bit daft….I did watch it though 😂😂😂
This whole show makes me feel like they tried to emulate Carrie Bradshaw's style but done wrong every single time.
Patricia field is the stylist for both
I always think they want to make her Blair Waldorf but Blair was wealthy upper class where it was normal to wear something extravagant, but Emily is just regular girl and it’s looks weird
Emily from The Devil Wears Prada is raging. SHE belongs in Paris. The TRUE EMILY that belongs in Paris.
Could we have Haute LeMode review some of the Drag Race seasons runways? I feel like that would be so fun!
@@erinbird1228 he does react to fashion tiktoks tho, i think the drag race is a great idea
The bold colours mixed with awful patterns hurt my eyes 😭
I'm gonna need a bookshelf tour
I was just thinking, I am spotting books my granny owned and she knew :')
for me, the biggest problem with the looks inside the show is, that its so far away from reality..
I'd love to see a full review of Sylvie's outfits in both seasons! it's unbelievable how chic she looks every scene
Your analysis and research is something to behold 🤩
I have never watched a single episode of Emily in Paris and I never will but I hope for at least another 6 seasons and a movie because I don’t want this highly entertaining UA-cam videos to ever go away. Come through educational fashionista!
I love really colorful clothing and enjoyed a majority of Emily’s outfits, but as always your knowledge of fashion history, construction, and tradition really sharpens my eye in how I experience fashion. Much appreciated!
I am just cackling throughout this entire video. Your reads are comedic and yet still informational.... so brilliant.
“What is the color story? I have a migraine by just thinking about it.” 18:53 🤣🤣😂😂😂 so eloquently put.
The fact that Emily is running without a sports bra is worse than wearing an asymmetrical top. Bc idk about u, but my girls hurt if they are not properly supported and protected during exercise.
I thought the same thing, lol!! No woman with any amount of boob would jog in a ribbed white tank with no bra, let alone sports bra.
This video is literally the only reason why I put myself through the pain of watching the second season.
OHHHH been waiting for this one
I just assumed that Emily's fashion is meant to be as stunted as her maturity and emotional range. She's deeply unpleasant- a real frenemy.
Is there gonna be a part 2 for season 2? 😅 not now but maybe after taking a few weeks off from season 3?
I like Lily very much, from all the interviews I've seen and read, she's such a sweet and down to earth person. I don't know how much more critique she'll be able to endure starring in this show, honestly.
She’s one of the producers so she could switch it up if she wanted. Change the wardrobe, change the direction of the character, stop her being a cheater that somehow makes herself the victim.
"To be honest, the dirt-covered leek is far more elegant than Emily ever will be." 😂😂😂
sadly.. i worked at an LVMH company and most people there were so stupid and indifferent that they didnt' even know or care how to pronounce their own brand names.
I’ve never even heard of this show but enjoyed this video very much ! Thanks Luke , you’re the best !
I don’t always watch every video but you have such a way of speaking about clothes I always pop back in. Have you ever thought of doing celebrity videos breaking down several looks they wear?
i’ve done a couple! zendaya’s looks for dune and cardi b during paris fashion week are some recent ones!!!
@@hautelemode I will check them out! Ahhh you responded!❤️❤️❤️❤️ much love to you.
Love the title Luke. What I love about this channel is the unapologetic opinions and eloquence with which they are delivered.
She's had an ED in the past and has spoken out about it but I don't know if she does now
I let out an audible gasp at that pantaloon reveal. Truly just a war crime being committed right in front of my eyes
i was literally just watching your review for emily in paris season 1 a while ago, hoping you would do season two!! the universe has my back today, can't wait to watch this review
"Unlikable in Paris"... Thank you, this was hilarious!
I was waiting for this since the release of season 2 😭
I read the title, thought "Brutal" and excitedly clicked on the video. God I was not disappointed. HauteLeMode was ON FIRE. God the tea was *Chef's kiss*
The plan for Emily’s clothes seem to be every part is must be a statement piece. I’m sure parts of each outfit would be great when paired correctly, but they seem to be actively not wanting to.
OH MY GOD PLEASE REVIEW THE FASHION OF THE GOSSIP GIRL REBOOT
Their actual stylist is Mattel.
Thank God for you Luke, every other youtuber has been like “redemption!” “It’s not that bad” but no it’s really THAT bad
Omg I need the next half I AM LIVING FOR THIS COMMENTARY ON THE FASHION AND THE CHARACTERS
Every outfit of Emily's I was like "this is the worst yet" and then the next one would come on screen and it only got worse each time 😭
😂😂😂 I cringe at most of her outfits.
