  • In this video I show how viewers how to replace the 3 seals on a Getrag 260. The input shaft seal, output shaft seal and shift shaft seal. All 3 are common to leak after a lot of miles are put on them. I replaced them while I "rebuilt" my transmission. See earlier videos for that process. I left most of the bulk of the video instead of editing it to be shorter because installing seals can be tricky.

    Only use grease on the guiding tube and on the inside of the throw out bearing if it has metal to metal contact, this specific TOB has some self-lubricating plastic.
    Grease can, combined with the abrasion of the plastic, seize the TOB.
    The bentley manual only states this, because older style TOBs are completely made of metal.

    Another great video man love it keep it up! Very detailed and awesome to watch! I’m really struggling to find the torque spec for a 250 getrag manual transmission do you know where I could find this spec? I’ve looked everywhere! Could it possibly be the same spec as the 260? Thanks

    Great vids. Do you have a recommended substitute for Curil K2. Seems hard (impossible?) to find.

      @85garage  2 роки тому +1

      Permatex anaerobic sealer is a great substitute for curil. Curil is basically just a anaerobic gasket maker. You’re right, Curil is getting really hard to source.

    Question about the shift shaft seal. They’re notorious for leaking, so when installing them could you coat the shaft in grease and instead of coating the inside of the seal could you coat it with the gasket sealer?
    Theoretically wouldn’t the gasket sealer keep it from leaking while the grease on the shaft help it slide on and set in the seat nicely or would the slight mix between the grease and gasket sealer create a possible issue?

      Also would it be safe to use that homemade input shaft tool to seat the output shaft seal?

    • @85garage
      @85garage  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, this is exactly how I install them. Rubber-safe grease on the shaft and a bit on the inside lip of the seal. I use the anaerobic sealer (in my case the Curil k2) on the outside of the seal (the metal part). I haven’t had any leaks since I started installing it that way. Just take your time and try not to get any grease mixed with the sealer on the outside like you said. The other thing you’ve got to make sure of is not to scratch the bore when removing the old seal. I finally broke down and bought the BMW tool that removes them without scratching it. Part number is 83302219637. You can order it at your local dealer or online. Usually around $40USD. Let me know if you have any other questions.

      @@jerjustice8074 Yes, I’ve used it and it works fine to drive the output shaft seal in but I usually finish driving it in with a small hammer with light taps until it sits flush all the way around.

    After I watched your video, I notice that my getrag rattle may come from the input shaft bearing or the bad spring or throw out bearing! Thank you

    My transmission didn’t have a spacer? What should I do

    • @85garage
      @85garage  2 роки тому

      No spacer behind the snap ring? It’s possible when it was assembled that it didn’t need a spacer to take up the endplay on the gear train. I guess I would check to make sure they’re wasn’t a lot of in and out play on the input shaft and if there isn’t put it back together without one.
