Lock Snapping - The Euro Cylinder Lock Vulnerability

  • Опубліковано 19 лют 2012
  • Euro cylinder locks are fitted to millions of properties, usually in UPVC and other double glazed doors. Since 2009 there has been a rise in the technique used by criminals which can allows someone to enter a home in as little as 15 seconds.
This technique involves applying force and snapping the cylinder in two, gaining entry to a home with ease!
West Yorkshire Police said it was mainly prevalent with euro cylinder locks and urged concerned residents to seek crime prevention advice.
Gardinia recommend Avocet ABS high security euro door cylinders, these can be purchased from Upvc Spares 4 Repairs at: upvcspares4repairs.co.uk/upvc...

I am a locksmith, I carry a few kite marked anti-snap Euro locks on my van, but the bottom line for the customer is always cost. I offer the better but more expensive lock at £30 and a standard Euro lock for £17.50. In 4 years of trading only 1 customer has ever chosen the more expensive lock.

@@Willtext Wow that's an old post, I can say I now fit far more BS locks than non BS locks. "The best brand?" Hummm 3 Star = I like ABUS, but I like UAP's Kinetica cash protection, and the ERA Fortress cylinder is very good, but overly complicated and I have known some key and turn cylinders to fail if there is pressure on the multipoint bolts/hooks during operation, though the thumb turn still functions, also the Fortress key blanks are quite expensive. I would say stay away from the Avocet ABS High Security Euro Cylinder, as I have a special tool that will open and relock it without any visible trace. Hope that helps :)

Too much hassle to mortice them and the muti point lock is harder to kick in and sadly most people who used a five lever lock never used it so the door was only held closed by the low security latch Wich also made it easy to slip the latch.

Since it's easy for a burglar to snap a handle and gain access to a cylinder, do you think it would be a good idea to weld the outside handle to the door instead of letting it be fixed by screws? Provided that you can still change the cylinder when needed by removing the plate that's on the inside of the door and then removing the cylinder from the inside.

    • @JayGee6996
      @JayGee6996 Рік тому

The handle itself is snapped rather than the bolts, they only do that to gain access to the barrel so they can snap it in half. The solution is to get a snap proof barrel that locks itself shut if it snaps

Interesting that its 2012 and now being reported. We used to use this as a last resort to gain entry on call outs, either a specialist tool or a pair of grips, back in the 90's.
Often the cutout for the lock is too big allowing forcing tools to get a good grip and allowing side to side movement of the lock and very very easy breakage.
The only time we struggled with this kink of lock was when flush fitted to a security door of a medical room in a ship.

In 2016, the Euro cylinder lock on my back door was snapped and the thieves managed to enter my home, they were disturbed b y my elderly mother going to the toilet and making a noise up stairs, so they made a hastyretreat empty handed. I live in a village 3 miles from Halifax, there was a white Ford Transit van caught on a neighbours CCTV camera, the van was later found abandoned in Bradford. I bought new unbreakable steel Euro locks for the front a nd back doors at £50 each, I also bought lockable boor jammers for the top and bottom of both doors. The brass Euro locks should be banned from sale in my opinion as they are too easy to break in my opinion. The door jammers are a worthwhile additional secuirity measure.

As the clip shows at 5.17 the security of the door with 3 bars coming out into the frame , and my key was the most sophisticated I ever saw, and the wankers produce the most stupid design. At leasr make it out of stainless and give it some beef. Wankers They must be getting commission from the burglars. WANKER DESIGNERS.

I got a Dom Diamond cylinder protected with an Inn Pro Slippery defender, maybe you can find easier a Disec Kripton defender. In the UK houses don't have defenders so their cylinders use to be exposed to thieves, which is a big mistake, to avoid that risk premium British high-security cylinders have a controlled fracture like the Yale Platinium. Good models must be anti-fracture or snap, anti-extraction of the inner rotor, anti-bumping, anti-drill and anti-impressioning. Watch this video in Spanish although the locksmith guy is Colombian he works in my country, forget the language and choose one of these models of cylinders, they are the top, greetings from Spain:

This is old school scare mongering this just looks like an advert for their types of euro cylinders and the locksmith Who can sell you one to make more money. At the end of the day these euro cylinders are so much more expensive no one wants to pay for it. Anyways if they can't get in through snapping the euro they just smash a panel of glass easy that takes only 5 seconds. People will think if they change their Euro The house becomes so much safer wrong they just find another way in your house You're better off thinking about having a burger alarm or CCTV to prevent them from thinking about entering your house. But to be honest if they want to come in your house they will.

These ABS locks are very differnet to standard ones, theyre much harder to snap because of thicker and stronger materials and incorporate a trap mechanism where if the lock is hammered or attempted to snap the lock to the door jams itself on the external side. The internal side however remains functioning, saying it is just there to fleece money off people is stupid especially considering 90% of police forces would recommend them

It is scaremongering. Get a good door, a decent lock, and a security system. The locks they show are shit.

I am saying euro locks have Europe in the name. That is why the Brits might not want to use them as they don't want to be part of the EU.
It doesn't really matter and is not related to brexit at all.
