- How to replace a Euro Cylinder Lock Barrel stuck in the locked position, with no key. Opening a UPVC or composite door with a locked Euro Lock Cylinder without the key using the lock snapping method. A step by step tutorial showing how to remove a locked Euro Cylinder and replace it with a new one if you have lost the key.
This guide takes you the the complete process, from start to finish, to enable you to change a Euro Lock Cylinder (which is found on most UPVC and composite doors) whether it is locked shut or open. It shows how to snap a lock. It's surprising (and worrying!) how cheap and simple this job can be.

Big big thank you my son had lost his key we followed your instructions but we only replaced the barrel so didn’t need to measure anything. Daughter in law took the barrel we broke out to screwfix and the guy was helpful and gave us the barrel we needed for £12.. sure we saved my son a couple of hundred pounds THANK YOU!!!
I love reading these success stories from watching the video! Thanks for commenting to let me know.
After 21 years in our house in France, I had almost given up on ever locking one of our principle doors - a saviour Charlie, thanks !!
Thanks, im glad it was helpful!
Mate, your a legend. My garden door was locked and I'd lost my keys. Following the advice in this video saved me a lot of time and hassle. Thank you
Love reading comments like these! Glad it helped you out!
A really excellent video, especially on how to measure the lock without having to break it first which allows me time to go to screwfix first and still leave the house secure. Thanks very much.
Thanks very much for leaving a comment. Glad it helped you out.
Just watched your video, key snapped in lock in bag door, followed your tutorial and all sorted within half an hour and only cost me £14, brilliant thank you
Brilliant, pleased to hear it! 👍🏼
Lost my keys , never ever done anything like this , however watching your video made it easy , and I’ve replaced the lock cylinder, thank you very much .

This was so useful thank you mate. Bought an old pvc door for a shed and there was no key. Used the mole wrench and it came off first time. Huge help. 🙏🏻
Glad it helped you out mate! 👍🏼
Great video! Helped me today. Had to drill out the lock as I’d lost the key. Snapped the double cylinder and got replacement. Worked a treat. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent, love a success story like that!
I lost a key ring with keys for both doors of my workshop and the French windows in my lounge and conservatory. You have saved me about half a grand.

Brilliant news, glad to have helped!
At least I now know what anti snap means on my new front door. Thanks.
Brilliant Video! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I managed to throw the key away when clearing out a lifetimes collection of redundant keys, and thought I'd need to confess to needing a new door and not just a new eurolock...phew... Respect!!

Thanks mate, well explained, took no time to sort.
That's great to hear! Thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
It worked for me! The lock snapped easily but it took a few minutes to unlock the door. I used a flat-end driver blade to force the cam and it took a bit of force.
Well done! Whatever it takes!
Thanks for the video, it was a great help. It great to be able to do a job like this yourself. Also it was a real eye opener as to how easy it is to get past a standard lock. The price of the anti snap ones start to look a lot cheaper once you realise how little protection a normal lock gives. Cheers again
You're welcome, and thanks for leaving a comment! 👍🏼
Very useful, this enabled me to reuse a set of uPVC doors I was given without any keys! Will replace with a more secure barrel.
Excellent....glad to hear it! 👍🏼
Very helpful, and demonstrated in a very agreeable manner, thank you.
Thanks very much for leaving such a lovely comment! 👍🏼
Mate thank you so much, I couldn't figure out how to disengage the lock after snapping it and the alen key trick worked wonders! Saved me some monies on a lock smith. Keep up the good work 😊

What size allen key do you normally need?
@@charlieshooter What size allen key do you normally need?
If I'm honest I can't remember what I used here, but at a guess, a 3mm or 4mm maybe!
A massive thank you for sharing your video, I'm in same situation lol. Going to give this a go, before buying a new door.
Good luck! 👍🏼
Great upload! Will be attempting this job tomorrow. Thank you for sharing this with UA-cam. Take care. Thumbs up from me. 🫡
Thanks, I hope it helps you out! 👍🏼
@@charlieshooter I done it thanks to this upload. Thankyou again. Take care. 😊oh and saved me £180 for a call out and repair over the jubilee weekend. Well £150 as my lock was £30 so great saving lol.

Excellent, just the info I needed...you're a star!
Thanks for leaving a comment!
Thank you. Got so far, and you did the part I wasn't sure of.
Glad i was able to help! 👍🏼
Probably the best video on UA-cam. Thank you so much for this.
Thanks very much! I imagine when you need it, it feels like it's the best!! 😂
That new barrel is a lock snappers dream, especially with the amount protruding externally.
We weren't too concerned on this one because it was on a door that goes to a back garden with no other access. 👍🏼
great vid clear and concise, my only critism is why a leftie door? it like been under the car and remembering leftie loosey righty tighty
A leftie door? I didn't even know there was such a thing? 🤷🏽♂️
Legend! This saved me a lot of money.
Pleased to hear it! 👍🏼👍🏼
Amazing video, that's what I needed right now !
Perfect....thanks for commenting!
Brilliant video!! My only issue is i have a cam in the housing that looks like it has cogs to turn having an absolute nightmare!
That does sound a little more complicated. Keep persevering, it should go eventually.
Very useful. I just managed to replace my lock with this method
Excellent....glad to hear it! 👍🏼
With the non-snappable kind (centre snap) I went through a few options and ended up with a vice-grips/lockable plier on one side (the short side, which was inside the house) and whacking standard hammer with medium force end on the long side - more leverage (it was facing out, seemed to me it should be installed vice versa but anyway).
Glad you managed it in the end! 👍🏼
You can also screw a thick self tapper into the key entry and use a crowbar
That's another idea! 👍🏼
Thanks
Great video thanks, and thanks for not cutting the attempts out of the video like many people do on these types of vids! If the lock had anti-snap, would drilling or picking be the only options?
Thank you, i like to show what it's really like! I've not had the misfortune of having to break an anti-snap lock, but i guess so, yes!
You would have to put the mole grips further down the lock barrel to actually break the middle
Thank you so much, one go and it snapped
That's good going! Well done! 👍🏼
You're a saviour mate, thanks a lot!

Spot on mate this has helped me so much as tenant has lost keys ffs
Pleased to hear it! It's a good bit of info to have when keys have been lost!
If you insert a screw into the key hole and screw it in a short way, you can snap a basic cylinder simply by pressing down gently with a crowbar or hammer, far easier than mole grips. You need to be aware though that there are far more versions of anti-snap cylinders out there now, and not all of them have grooves on the sides. I myself invented one which has no visible signs externally that it is anti-snap, when I worked for a lock company over a decade ago. It has a steel rod through the centre of it from one side to the other which prevents the cylinder from flexing so it won't snap.
Nice to have some knowledge from the inside! 👍🏼
A funcționat ! Încercați pana va iese!

@@charlieshooter just replaced front lock, we managed to loose both keys in a period of two weeks, what an achievement..haha. had some idea but video helped. Thanks again
Excellent this will definitely help me. Do you have a video on locked window handles? I've lost some keys
Thanks for commenting! I don't have any videos on windows though sorry!
Thanks. Our key had stopped working so we had to break the lock and fit a new one. This took a bit more effort but we got there in the end.
Pleased to hear it helped you out! Thanks for commenting!
Lost key , Snapped my barrel , fitted new euro cylinder, locks perfectly. Unlocking key keeps spinning takes 10 plus turns for it to catch and unlock ? Have I damaged the gearbox in the door when snapping the barrel or is there something I’m doing wrong ? It’s all fitted properly?
If there is a gearbox you may well have damaged it. Or the barrell may be faulty?
Thank you very much sir!
Glad to be of service! 👍🏼
Couldn't thank you enough....Thank you !
Brilliant! Glad it worked!
Hi, I have got the same problem for my conservatory door. Please can you advise about anti snap cylinders?
I'm not really sure to be honest, I've never had to do one. I would imagine a locksmith may need to pick it perhaps?
Personally I would have replaced the cylinder with an anti snap type and bough a spare couple of keys to go with it. A very nicely explained video all the same though
Cheers! Probably would have done the same, but the door was going into a secure garden with no real access, so wasn't a huge concern.
Great video I just have a question what if you have an anti snap euro barrel, I still cannot open the door because of the ant snap lock so I just want to know will I have to call a lock Smith for that or is there still a way to fix it without calling a lock smith
I've never tried but this method would be no good on an anti-snap lock. That may need to be a locksmith job sorry.
Change the lock for an anti snap, anti bump and anti drill version. Those same mole grips can rip the handle off then snap the lock. Try and make it a difficult to get the lock out as you can.
That would always be my advice. However this door was out into an enclosed garden with no access so wasn't really necessary for this door.
Hi Have changed a few barrels in the past with the key, but my cylinders at my current house will not just slide out have tried turning the key slightly in all postions but just doesn't pull out any ideas, great video
Have you taken the screw out fully? Sometimes you may need to give it a good wiggle whilst turning the key maybe?
Thanks for the video ... about to hammer it down or up instead of using a griper, is that an option, also either methodod , will it neve demage the inside case?
I think any kind of impact should work.
Hi thanks for you add on you tube it works very well thanks again
Glad it worked well for you! 👍🏼
As well as the overall length of the barrel, you need to measure the length of the inside and outside halves as they are sometimes longer on one side.
Yes, that's right! 👍🏼
Thanks for the video well explained did everything and it has gone the way it went for you my only problem it I cant feel any cams with my Alan key. can you help
That bit is fiddly to be fair. It can take a while but you should eventually get there.
Good job.
I think ideally you don’t want the cylinder sticking out the other side though as it makes it too easy to grab on to, to snap it (with mole grips or a short pipe I believe they use).
What some crook did to me though was insert a screw in to the cylinder a bit and then use a claw hammer to snap/rip it out. Luckily my neighbour disturbed them but they still knackered the lock.
Replaced it the next day with anti-snap/bump/pick 👍🏻
Thanks for leaving a comment. I think you're right about the bit of cylinder sticking out the other side though. I did try to turn it round but as the cylinder is symmetrical it still stuck out as much. Maybe a slightly shorter cylinder would have worked. Ideally though, yes, you want an anti-snap/bump cylinder in there to really be secure. Thanks for watching!
Good work
Thanks!
Can a hammer be used to break it if you hit it on top?
If you are accurate enough with it, it could work. Careful you don't damage anything else in the process!
Brilliant. F………g. Brilliant. Thank you.
I think that means you found it useful! Brilliant indeed! 👍🏼
I follow the instructions (best ones on UA-cam by the way), I can flick the latch over after removing the cylinder, but the door still doesn't open. Any suggestions?
Thank you! I'm not really sure what that could be....is the latch definitely flicked over properly??
@@charlieshooter as far as I can push it. Even used some wd40 to help it along.
@@madamscrewup1 I had a bit of trouble at first, thought i was pushing the cam but I wasn't. Double check it is the right bit you are flicking over. It is a tad awkward.
Just tried it, the barrel came out pretty easily, but as I was fitting the new one there was like a metal piece sitting on top of the old barrel which I assume was to push the locking mechanism but as I was fitting the new one it wasn't locking so I thought I must have put it back incorrectly and when I removed the new barrel to reset the metal piece it fell inside the pvc door and there no way I can see how to get it out 😢
Oh yeh, that's probably lost for good!! But there shouldn't have been anything break off that you should need for new lock!
@@charlieshooter that's what was confusing me. It wasn't part of the barrel, rather it was sitting on top of the barrel loosely. I managed to grab it and have a look at it before I tried fitting the new barrel. It looks like it was what the barrel pushes to lock the door when you turn the key, but it seems quite odd that this was loose and not fixed inside the door in some way. When I had a look at it before losing it I couldn't see any sign of it being snapped off anything so I'm really confused as to why it was, and what I can do to get it fixed. Right now I'm just using one of those french door handle locks to keep the door closed but it's a bit worrying that we can't lock the actual door
thank you!!!
No problem!
Thanks ❤
The Euro Cylinder Lock I wish to change has a toggle on the inside but it also has a flange on the outside. This stops the lock being able to slide either way, so I think the only way to remove it to change it is to break it. Wish me luck. I'm only having to do this as extra keys cannot be recreated.
Good luck! Although are you sure the barrel won't just slide out the toggle side, it should do?
Me and my neighbour helping out got all the way up to the allen key part but could not for the life of us turn the deadlock. It's an ERA brand. We were moving the only part within the key hole back and forth but it didn't move the deadlock at all. Any tips??
It is a fiddly part of the process, but if you persevere and try it both ways (left and right) you should get there in the end. Good luck!
yeah it worked thanks
Brilliant....great news!
I tried snapping an old cylinder lock in a vice with mole grips and it would not break so maybe these are old or defective locks
The more modern anti-snap locks are much tougher. There are still plenty of locks around like in the video though.
I've been given an old set of UPVC double patio doors. No key and remainder of the key snapped off in one side. I can open the doors to get access to both sides. Do you have a guid on how to remove the cylinder from that them please?
The fact you can open the doors means you'll be able to access the screw holding the barrel in place but without being able to turn the key you won't be able to slide the barrel out of the door. If you can get anything on the bit of key left in there (pliers or something) you may well be able to turn it enough....maybe a quarter turn if that.
If not you'll have to follow the video. It may be easier to snap with the screw out.
After all the good comments I'm gonna give it a go
Awesome! Go for it!
Meh.... it didn't work. I think I broke the tools😅 been waiting for nearly 2 weeks for the landlord. As I'm gonna call a locksmith now
Oh dear! Sorry to hear that!

Exactly same size, and totally insecure. You spoke about break secure cylinders, and didn’t even fit one, WHY?
This was going on a back door with no other access to it, so security isn't a major issue.
Ive had to snap my door lock because ive lost my bloody keys but im stuck at the next step where i mive this cam i vant seem to figure that bit out and i can open my door to even change the euro lock have any tips for this problem its an old enough upvc door i just cant figure out where in the hole this cam is !!

Hi mate after some advice had my front door lock just start spinning while it was locked so I got the old barrle out replaced it with a new one fitted and the door locks but when u go to unlock it it just spins again like it was before any ideas?
Bit late in replying but I suspect the culprit as often is the case is / was the Gearbox unit - there is'nt much else left that it could be.
when you release that cam thing with the allen key does that unlock the door ?
Yes....it is what the key (barrel) moves to unlock the door.
Why would you fit a non-anti-snap barrel? You know how they’re defeated, you’ve just done it! Also -any amount proud of the handle gives a better chance of snapping, so flush is best!
I would always recommend an anti-snap barrel where you can. In this case, it is a door to an enclosed back garden, so it's not a real problem!
Not all doors require the same level of security
Well done.
Thank you. Glad you liked it!
Struggling with mine as the screws are spinning on the threads. Any ideas? T.
The screws to remove the handle?
Yes, on the handles so my screws are slotted rather than phillips. Im attempting to change 2 locks with missing keys - garden one which material is probably broken as screws are rusted but the door they are inside?! T.
They screw into the handle the other side so if they are spinning somehing may be broken the other side and therefore the handle may be able to be forced a bit to get it away from the door?
Thanks for replying. I got the top one out in the garden gate and will try and prize handle a bit. The backdoor can’t seem to get any friction. T.
Gd video. Thank you.

I still cant get the door open broke the lock but the allen key bit I dont understand tryed it but no avil not sure exactly what im looking to move with the allen key? Good vid all the same.any advice?
Turning the cam is a tricky business! It is a bit fiddly to say the least. You are looking for a bit of black (usually) metal sticking down a bit and it needs to flick across. Try it both ways because for me the way i thought it should go didn't work.
@@charlieshooter cheers ill give a shot thanks.
@@cassyfromgarry Perseverance is key! 👍🏼
@@charlieshooter its either that or a couple of sticks of dynamite 🙂 cheers.
A problem if you are outside..as the handle retaining screws are inside!!!
