Honestly Dillinger doesn’t have a single bad album so going through their discography is a great decision. Loved your reaction.
Yeah, I've loved everything I've heard so far from them. It's cool too that these first two albums along with Irony Is A Dead Scene have all had different vocalists, and yet all three sound like it's still the same band.
I didn’t like their first album but I think it’s because it was before Greg
Greg Puciato has to be one of the most intense frontmen I've ever seen live.
I can believe that! His voice is so incredibly versatile.
Agreed. Seen TDEP four times and they’ve all been the most brutal shows I’ve ever been to.
@@mollyesanborn if you haven't, you gotta look up them doing 43% Burnt at Furnace Fest '02. It involves mayhem, destruction, and lots of actual fire lol. Greg was an absolute madman when he first joined.
I saw them live when they were touring for this album. Here in Baltimore which is his home town.
It was the most intense hardcore show I've been to, and he breathed fire. I remember the liquid falling on our faces because we were in the front row. They got fined like 10 grand because indoor pyro had been banned because of the Great White show burning down.
The climax in Van Damsel is one of the heaviest things I've ever heard. Maybe not the sound of it, but more the feel of it just hits you like a ton of bricks.
This album is basically the first of what the rest of their albums sound like, manic jazzy mathcore with some exploding melodic moments
Sounds like I'll really enjoy the rest of their discography then!
In my opinion. Dillinger has the best last album I've ever heard. And the song "Dissociation" is the cherry on top. The perfect swan song.
I can't wait to hear it!
The fact it's their last album makes those final 2 songs hit so much harder. Sad I never got to see them live, but this is the perfect ending for a band.
@@mickjager Personally I’m more into “One of us is the Killer” as an album experience, and I think it’s their magnum opus is so many respects. But I definitely agree, I wish I had discovered them before the breakup.
Thanks for reacting to this! I love Dillinger so much and this album is one of my favourite metal albums ever. I think it's mind-blowing that Greg was only 23 years old at the time.
One of my favorite albums of all time. My first time seeing them live was on the tour for this one. It was a 19+ show and I was 18 at the time. Greg himself actually snuck me in through the side loading doors. Top notch gent and their set was insane. Definitely an experience I'll never forget.
I loved Greg's vocals on Miss Machine, but I think he didn't really find his own identity until their later work. He very much leans into the Mike Patton style on MM, and I remember a lot of criticism surrounding that at the time of release.
That's an awesome story, really cool that he snuck you in to see them. And yeah I was definitely picking up on the Mike Patton influence on Miss Machine. I'm curious now to hear their following albums and see how their sound will evolve.
What a cool memory to have of that show! I saw them just the one time, seventeen years ago this month it was. I looked it up and saw that it was at Neumos in Seattle, where they were supported by Between the Buried and Me (who I became of fan of because of their performance). There were a couple of other bands opening, as well, but that was quite the intense show with BTBAM and DEP. You nailed it, insane is the perfect description for their set!
Baby's first coffin is their best imo
That track is fantastic!
Yes, it's my favourite overall by Dillinger
This album changed my perspective on music.
This album changed my life. I recognized that there was something inexplicably rad about this music but it definitely took a few listens for it to click... and when it clicked oh boy did it ever impact me in a huge way. Hard to believe I heard this for the first time nearly 18 years ago. You're super cool and I can't wait to see what you think about the rest of their discography!
Dillinger is an acquired taste, but once you swallow your preconceptions of what music is you can hear the art in it
From this point on they seemed to be trying to write songs that could be commercially viable. Again, I feel this way, never heard them say it.
Fantastic review as always! Wow this album takes me back….I really appreciate the respect you pay to the bands and their work in your reviews
Thank you, I appreciate that! I'm so glad that I'm finally getting to discover bands like TDEP, it blows my mind how many talented artists are out there that I have never even heard.
Great taste! Sunshine and Phone Home were always my fav tracks. Was always a little disappointed DEP hardly ever played Phone Home live, and I feel for folks like you who got into DEP a little late that won’t get to see arguably one of the best live bands perform ever again.
I know, too bad I'll miss out on seeing them live. I can only imagine the energy a show from them must have had.
Every one of their albums is great, but this is probably my favorite. It's the most Dillinger Dillinger album, the craziness and chaotic changes are turned up to eleven and I like how the production is a bit messier than their later ones. Thanks for being one of the few folks on to check them out, I get why they're not most people's cup of tea, but there's things their music makes you feel that no one else can if you're willing to get use to how abrasive the vocals can be.
Gregs solo stuff has really gotten me through stuff recently. 2 of my favorite albums ever especially his recent one. His black queen stuff and killer be killed stuff is also great. Every dillenger album is also fantastic. They get better album to album for me expecially their final one
I'll definitely plan on checking out Greg's other projects once I finish with Dillinger's albums.
@@mollyesanborn the man is a true treat. Ive never heard a song I haven’t enjoyed
Yes, I also recommended Black Queen to her. "Fever Daydream" is easily in my Top 10 albums released in the past 10 years.
Yes! Especially the first Black Queen album is beyond amazing.
I think it was Rolling Stone that described a DEP show as having "a realistic chance someone might actually die."
Oh sh*t! here we go again. Love this album
Chris Pennie (the drummer) said in an interview that NIN played a huge influence on his drumming/songwriting (specifically on Phone Home). So you hit the nail on the head.
Love this so much!! Awesome review! Sunshine the Werewolf is such an amazing track with the most awesome breakdown.
I agree, one of my favorite tracks from Dillinger so far!
Just discovered this channel looking for Dillinger reactions. The album and artist spread that I've seen has been immaculate. If it's your cup of tea so to speak there is a distinct lack of Dillinger AND The Red Chord video reactions across the board. If you're into the more extreme side of metal there is also much room for reactions to bands such as Cryptopsy/Beneath the Massacre/Spawn of Possession/Origin/Warforged/Wormed etc. Do with this information what you will. Have a blessed day. ✌
Glad you found the channel! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to keep them in mind :)
I totally agree with your description of this album fusing parts of "Calculating" and "Irony" together to create something new and exciting. I was a fan before this album, but this release was when I became obsessed and went to every show I could.
Yeah it really is a great fusion of the two ends of the Dillinger spectrum. The harsh and abrasive chaotic side and the laid back and jazzy fun side.
I've always known about dillinger but I dove into this album about a month ago and I've been obsessed since!
Nice! Glad you're getting into Dillinger too. I've yet to hear a band exactly like them, it's pretty addictive music for sure. I'm looking forward to hearing more of their albums.
Dillingers like one of the few 'Mathcore' bands I like. i got into them around the time this album came out 🔥🔥.
Look...Greg later on created a side project with a technician/former member of Nine Inch Nails called The Black Queen and it is a total 180 from what you hear in his DEP work. Imagine Crosses, Team Sleep, and lush 80-style synth pop. Their first album is called "Fever Daydream"...It's absolutely amazing and I can 100% guarantee you'll love it baed off of the tastes I've seen on your videos. I would LOVE for you to check it out.
I will absolutely be checking The Black Queen out once I finish up with TDEP's albums. Sounds exactly like the type of music I love.
Unretrofied is my favorite on that album. So good.
Such an awesome song!
yo, this was so fun. brings me back to the reactions of my friends and I listening to it when it first came out(wild times). nobody in my little, very young realm of the scene even knew what to call this stuff at the time.
also, it's seriously so awesome that there's finally a solid reaction channel not just for this type of music, but especially covering so many classics of these genres, which we rarely, if ever, get to see first time reaction vids for. keep up the great work, brah
Thanks for the comment, and I'm happy to hear that you're enjoying the channel! I love that I've discovered so many amazing bands through doing these videos, it's pretty awesome :)
Dillinger is the musical balance of chaos and control
My fav DEP Album. Saw them 3 times live…unreal good, miss these guys!
Lol your face during the orchestral part of Sunshine the Werewolf was the appropriate reaction
There was a time, I was nearly 40 I've always loved heavy and not main stream music, I was listening to a lot of Converge, D.E.P., Lightning Bolt,
My relatives all wondered what was wrong with me. I think they just didn't get it. There is magic in this art. Not for everyone, I saw Picasso paintings at M.O.M. A literally stick figure drawings of people getting gunned down by helicopter machine guns drawn on lined notepad paper, so fir peolke to consider him an art diety and deny that for some of us there the cathartic beauty here.... well I love it.
Can’t wait for the two next albums, they are my absolute favorite
I'm looking forward to hearing them!
Mrs. Machine is a Classic. You’re gonna enjoy Ire Works and One of us is the Killer.
DEP was one of the first bands I heard that did the progressiveness really well. I'm really glad I got into them first! "Miss Machine" may be their best work.
So glad you a doing this album. This is my personal favorite.
One of the best live bands ever...glad they came here to New Zealand a few times. Recommend you check out Godflesh and The Jesus Lizard as well.
I want to get a pet werewolf and name it sunshine. :)
Fantastic choice! Love this band
Dillinger always brings the energy, that's for sure!
Your reaction at 2:39 reminds me of mine the first time I heard that part of sunshine. Love it!
Ahead of their time amazing live
One of my fav albums of all time.
Greg killed it on this release. I love his voice and everything he does.
This album used to be my least favorite, it never really had that reply value for me.
But weirdly, it slowly worked its way as my go to album from them.
I never had an album do that with me.
Love you Reviews. Like to know, what's your opinion on Fontaine d.c. or idles
Little early history of the band:
After the grueling touring schedule following the 'Calculating Infinity' release, Dimiti Minakakis (vocals) left the group to work as a fulltime graphic designer and take care of his newborn kids. He actually did design the album artwork and layout for 'Miss Machine' and still remains close with the band members.
This album is the point where many DEP fans think they started to go downhill. I disagree completely. Ire Works (the next album, I believe) is when they started becoming legendary.
Ooh, can't wait to hear that one!
Even Dillingers worst album, "Dissociation," is better than what most artists could aspire to achieve.
@@Remedy462 my least favourite release of DEP is the debut album, but every release is insane in a good way.
If you like the DEP you’ll definitely enjoy “Car Bomb” check ‘‘em out.
dillinger escape plans is one of my favorite bands of all time. they seem to go through every music genre in one album. amazingly they outdid themselves on every album. they definetely did their own thing, unafraid to grow and try new things as musicians. i love seeing reactions from newcomers to the band. will be fun to see your reactions to the rest of their albums.
Yeah, their genre fusing is wild! Very experimental music but they make it sound so cohesive and polished. All three projects from them that I've heard so far have really impressed me and I'm really excited to hear the rest.
I'm hoping soon you'll give Cold a listen
Noted, I'll have to keep them in mind :)
The new Darko US album just came out called Oni... It is honestly amazing you definitely need to check it out!!! It's a bit heavier than what you're used to but the contrast between the heavy and the shoegaze sections is just so unique and honestly beautiful.
I will have to look into that album, thanks for the suggestion.
I remember getting my nose turned sideways during Sunshine the Werewolf and never being happier.
Dillinger are (well…were now) such a unique band. I’ve always considered them to be both underrated and properly rated at the same time.
Others have mentioned this already, but I do recommend checking out Greg’s current project Killer Be Killed. They’ve released two albums to date. It features him, Max Cavalera and Troy Sanders (Mastodon) all providing lead vocals. They’re crushing. I imagine your list of bands is stacked already, but they’re definitely worth checking out at some point.
Sounds pretty awesome, I'll definitely have to check out Killer Be Killed at some point. I really enjoyed Greg's addition to TDEP on this album and definitely want to look into his other projects as well.
Thank you for another great review.
You should listen to Acid Bath's album When the Kite String Pops. It's one of my favourite albums ever and I'd love to hear your take on it.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video! I've got that album on my list, hopefully I can get to it soon :)
How you're smiling to the craziness in this is exactly how I reacted nearly 20 years ago when I first heard this album :)
Please consider listening to The Locust, specifically their last album, New Erections. Sci-Fi proggy grindcore with really cool electronics
Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants and Unretrofied are my favorite tracks, and very reminiscent of Mike Patton!
This was a life-changing record for me, hope you enjoyed it
I certainly did, this record is awesome!
As you grow older there are less and less moments like this, watching her made me jealous.
Your taste is amazing
Instant like
Yo Molly, the algorithm led me to your Deftones reactions. After exploring some of the other bands that you have enjoyed I felt the urge to recc some of my all-time faves. Most feature mult aspects that you bring up frequently -- atmosphere, surprise, heaviness, vocals that skillfully alternate between heavy and melodic.
Without further ado: Poison the Well's "You Come Before You," Norma Jean's "Wrongdoers," Greyhaven's "Empty Black," Rolo Tomassi's "Grievances," Fear Before the March of Flames' "Always Open Mouth," and less heavy but probably the most atmospheric of this bunch I'd suggest Failure's "Fantastic Planet." These are the starting point albums I'd give you, the ones that would be most helpful to decide further exploration. By no means do I recc these for reaction vids -- most are prob not popular enough to really drive clicks -- but they are def worth a try based on your overlap with my taste.
Cheers!
Glad you found the channel and are enjoying the videos! Several others have suggested Poison The Well and Failure (especially Fantastic Planet). I'll have to add your other suggestions to my list, thanks :)
Now you only have Ire Works, Option Paralysis, One Of Us Is The Killer and Dissociation to review 😆 you are a lady of great tastes 😉
And I'm looking forward to all of them :)
Yesss. And I will watch your reaction. You're in for a hell of a ride
I have a recommendation. Primus a weird funk rock band from the 90s they're very entertaining and I think you would like them.
Nice one Molly. You should check out 'Dog Fashion Disco' Adultery album
Dog Fashion Disco has been a band I've been wanting to give a listen to soon!
With all you've said in this all I can do is quote Archer "Phrasing!" I haven't heard much Dillinger Escape Plan but from what you have covered makes me want to listen. The dynamics in this band are great, kind of reminds me of a much heavier version of a ban called "Garden Variety" which I liked a lot back in the day.
Yes definitely check out Dillinger's music. The dynamics are crazy, they manage to fuse completely opposing sides of the musical spectrum into one sound that works brilliantly in my opinion.
Loved the video, glad to see you're still enjoying the Dillinger Escape Plan! Do you think there will be a System Of A Down album ranking sometime soon?
Thanks for watching! I will certainly consider a SOAD ranking, I may just have to do one for Slipknot and Tool now too since I've finished with all of their albums.
I think you should definitely listen to Into The Moat, they played Mathcore/Metalcore with jazzy influences as well. They only released two albums but The Design is such a gem, I believe you'd like them
"Really calm interlude here"
Meanwhile me watching knowing that one of their most intense song endings is coming up...
This is where I checked out of DEP. Ben trying to be Trent Reznor, Greg trying to be Mike Patton, and the radio rock anthemic choruses. No thanks. 🤣 Still, lots of people love it, so still cool to see your reactions. ✌️
Hey thanks for giving the video a watch, even if this album isn't a favorite of yours. Miss Machine is certainly less abrasive and raw with its sound compared to Calculating Infinity. I can see how that might be a bit of a turn off for people who got hooked on that aspect of their sound.
Definitely NIN vibe of Phone Home and they covered NIN Wish w/ covered EP late Miss Machine tour era
OH they covered Wish?! I will have to track down their version to check out.
@@mollyesanborn The EP is “PLAGIARISM” Apple Music has it but make sure you see the live videos when DEP playing w/ NIN too 🖤
Now listen to the guest spot Greg Puciato did on the newest Carpenter Brut record. The track is called Imaginary Fire. Great vocal work.
Hello Molly! Nice video, I recommend u to listen 'The New Abnormal' by The Strokes 😊
"The Colour of Spring" by Talk Talk.
Good choice.
Would love to hear Meantime by Helmet next from you.
Thanks for the suggestion, I've been wanting to get into Helmet's music in the future.
Bullets by MCR
it's the 20th anniversary so perfect time to check out an emo classic
No more movie reviews? :( I really enjoyed your twilight review though
Molly, you heard the new Björk album yet?
No not yet! I definitely have to give it a listen soon.
@@mollyesanborn if you love her 'Homogenic' you should listen to EP 'Hellcat Story' from 2019 by artist Maruv
Molly, try checking out the album revolution/revolucion by ill niño.
We are the storm
Love to hear a review of Disintegration by The Cure. I think it'd be right up your street.
I think you would love Periphery IV: hail stan
I've got that one on my list! :)
@@mollyesanborn awesome!
Hi Molly please do spineshank
Well this should be an interesting one
Haha, yeah this album is pretty wild!
This band was heavily inspired by Mike Patton. They even made a record together.
Molly listen to Fantomas, Mike Patton ....you will love it
Listen To Pantera, Machine Head and more Sepultura albums 🤘
You're cool.
Their next two albums will blow you out of the water
I'm excited to hear them!
Definitely you have to take a look to Car Bomb's album "Mordial" you're gonna enjoy it :))
I pronounced his name as "greg pussyato" too, but it's more like "greg puchyato" lol
Make a series on Between the Buried and Me please!
Check out better lovers! It’s Dillinger and every time I die combined.
You're getting closer and closer, you need to do Every Time I Die's discography
you should do Poison the Well - The opposite of December.
React to Mr bungle california this is not a request it's an order
You need to check out Glassjaw- Everything you ever wanted to know about silence.
Hi Molly, I suggest you to react Scars on Broadway album. Tq
Have you dove in to every time I die yet? Please do!
I think I would love to see you review a MGK album lol I hate MGK but would love ur take esp on his past and newest album 😂
I think the farther you get into their catalog, the more layers that you'll find. Dillinger can sound like a wall of noise. But the more you can listen you pick up each different layer.
Absolutely, their music is very nuanced and there's a lot going on. A little overwhelming at times (especially on a first listen) but as you said you begin to pick up on more with each listen.
@@mollyesanborn if you ever are interested, go listen to the song mouth of ghosts. My favorite song by them. It's very layered, deep and orchestral even. I think you'd like it
U should totally do a reaction to Cannibal Corpse!! Id love to see it
Saliva self titled album Will most requested.....
If you like this, I highly recommend the band car bomb
I've got em on my list to check out!
u should do gregs other band " the black queen"
I definitely will do that once I finish up with the rest of Dillinger's albums.
