- OK! I wanted to see if my odd-time-signature-loving friend Sam from the band @starmindceremony8112 could make sense of TDEP's rhythms...we had fun.

Check out StarMind Ceremony! starmindceremony.bandcamp.com/ Well this was fun. Maybe not as detailed as you're used to but we were just hanging out and I asked Sam to be on my channel so here we are! MOAR TDEP!
Easy way to count TDEP is everything in 1.
Easy way to count anything come to think of it.
I actually suspect all of their stuff is in 4/4 and just weirdly accented! 😆
Accurate.
@@iximusic It would be accurate on some occasions, but take the verse riff from Highway Robbery (3rd track off of Miss Machine? Something like that). It's clearly _not_ 4/4.
Also, be sure to listen to Car Bomb next time, so weird time changes, sometimes they are _tempo_ fluctuations. It gets gimmicky if you really look it up, but they're amazing. What fascinates me in DEP, The Number 12 Looks Like You, and other such mathcore bands, are the pockets of absolutely stunning consonance amidst the chaotic destructive energy. Take the intro from TN12LLY's "Jay Waking Backwards" or the bossa nova section in "The Garden's All Nighters". Because of the dissonance in context, and because of dealing with so much noise, such musicians seem more capable of creating consonant music too. It's amazing.
😂 fucking accurate
Dillinger Escape Plan were an amazing band, truly. So violent.
Violent?
@@michaelheitmanek6290 aggressive, violent emotions. True art
The first time I saw them (2004) they started with “Sugar Coated Sour”, as soon as the intro bit finished the singer and BOTH guitar players did running leaps into the crowd. They literally never missed a note, and would continue to do this without warning. Greg Puciato would hurl pieces of Scott Pennie’s kit offstage midsong, and I don’t think Pennie even noticed it happen. Saw them four times, just tremendous.
Watch their live perfomance at the Golden Gods lol
made me look up "Dillinger Escape Plan @ Virgin Megastore, 2005" on youtube...again.
So good!
Doo Doo der der Doo Doo…. Puciato runs heads like stepping stones! 😅
Bring them back!
Still remember taking my girl to a Dillinger Escape Plan concert in Austin... she was not happy. Dillinger is still one of my favorite bands.
I had not heard that “widower” song before. Just wow… their melodic songs in between the chaos hit so hard. Thanks for the video! There should be more DEP content on UA-cam, they were so great
Widower was the song that opened my eyes, back in mid- 2011. I owe a lot to that song, mainly my development regarding musical prefferences.
I just saw Mr. Bungle here in Seattle a few weeks ago. Mike Patton who also sings with Dillinger Escape Plan was in great form. Mr. Bungle can also change up time signatures quite a bit in one song.
Oh, I so want to see Mr. Bungle in Europe!!!
This was so fun! Can't wait to come on again some time. Maybe we can jam the whole band in your studio haha
Awesome! There's something so gripping about math-ier extreme music. Would love to see y'all breakdown something from Converge or Deafheaven, or the weirder black metal stuff like Gorguts/Krallice/Blut Aus Nord.
I saw Dillenger at Reading Festival in the UK maybe 2002 or 2003? Was 11am and the lead singer took his shirt off, shat on it and threw it into the crowd. Good times.
WHAAAT
Oh yeah, the Greg Puciato scat incident. Kinda legendary.
I’ve been obsessed with the NIN videos but this is my favorite, I love Dillinger so much
My fav band! people say that it's not music, it's just noise and dumb scream - to this day it boggles me that people do not get how great compositionship and production of their songs behind "noise and scream". BTW, Farewell Mona Lisa is usually used by reactors, and i like this song a lot, but it's far from best tDEP song
The ones I have in rotation are:
Widower
Magic That I Held You Prisoner
One Of Us Is The Killer
Dissociation
Not a coincidence they all have gorgeous melodic parts. I do like their heavier, more chaotic stuff but don't find myself wanting to listen over and over...yet. I have only heard about 10 songs max at this point.
You need to lock yourself in a room and put Calculating Infinity on repeat a few times. The appreciation levels will supersede your tastes 😅
@@SpecialTBK Calculating infinity is very raw, bizarre and with low quality production, so usually it scares newcomers, turns them off and they never come back =)
@@iximusic if you like NIN, you probably will like the album "Miss Machine",
there are some songs that are NIN-inspired.
Some "easy-listen songs" that might catch your ear:
Phone Home
Unretrefoid
Setting Fire For Sleeping Gians
Milk Lizard
Dead As History
Mouth Of Ghosts
Parasitic Twins
Cannot figure out the best songs, i just love 60% of their catalog :)
but this ones worth listening for sure:
43% Burnt
Panasonic Youth
Baby's First Coffin
Sunshine the Werewolf
When I Lost My Bet
Crossburner
@@oleksiistri8429 That’s why I said you would have to lock yourself in a room. =)
tDEP- for when you absolutely need to damage your eardrums on a random thursday.
What you really need is Irony Is a Dead Scene. It;s Mike Patton with Dillinger cover Aphex Twins Come to Daddy.
They listened to Hollywood squares in this video
3:56 pair the insane time signatures, wild structures and absolute titans of mindblowing switch-ups/breaks/random parts ... together with COMPLETE AND ABSOLUTE CHAOS as a stage performance ... and yes. one would still be able to say they played ridiculously tight live. i have seen them countless of times over more than a decade and they have not failed me once. tDEP wasn't a band. tDEP was an experience. Thanks tDEP. (can't wait to see Better Lovers live. they combined best of both worlds.)
I got to see TDEP twice fortunately, never got to see ETID. Better Lovers didn't disappoint at all! Greg is as frenetic as ever. Ben Weinman's stage presence is hard to match but the ETID boys still throw down!
Can’t wait to see Better Lovers. Caught Dillinger twice and they were some of the best shows I had ever been too. Unfortunately the only time I ever saw ETID I didn’t know who they were 🙃
I love how dude mentioned he wanted to see them live. Not only are they incredible musicians, but absolute ANIMALS on stage. The performative art did NOT stop at just the music. Absolute legends. Some of the best to ever do it.
Really dig y'all's reactions though. Great insights into the music and its structure. Would love to see what you both say about the Lyle Cooper drum cams w/ the Faceless.
I saw them three nights in a row at a dive bar right after chris cornell died. I have no idea how I survived.
Are they that tight live?
Yes.
GAH I saw Dillinger at a local club that fit maybe 500 people. It was FUCKING NUTS and I loved every second of it.
Widower is my fav song by them, I prefer their melodic songs, they always find very interesting chords and catchy melodies
I use to change my favorite song, it turns out that the 4 songs i always take as my favorites are "Farewell, mona lisa", "Chinese Whispers", "Widower" and "Gold teeth on a bum". It's a very amusing coincidence that all 4 songs are from Option Paralysis, i guess it's quite obvious that in fact this album brought us the most experimental and above all heterogeneous songs with wide structures and variety, more than any other album I've listened.
funny how this video was made just as Dillinger became my favourite band 😂
One of my favorite melodic Dillinger songs beside Widower is One of Us is the Killer. It is amazing what they can play. They are geniuses.
I have that one on repeat. Though Dissociation might be my favorite.
Greatest reaction channel ever you just earned a subscriber guys good form
Saw them twice pretty up close.. dep.. love ‘em forever. 🙏🏼✨
I want this band played at my funeral.
YESSSS ive been waiting for you to cover tdep, this is a dream come true!!!
You guys are amazing! Keep it going!
AHH THE LIVE NEW YEARS RECORDING IS MY FAVORITE VIDEO OF ALL TIME :D
Very cool video, Dillinger's reaction videos are pretty rare, i enjoyed it a lot
This was great! More Dillinger please? :)
Excellent band. I paid attention to anything that Mike Patton got imvolved with after seeing FNM in London on their 1989 tour supporting their best album "The Real Thing".
He's been involved in lots of groups, maybe check out Fantomos, and his reworking of some well known movie music!
Truly awesome
Hope it’s “Irony is a dead scene” with Mike Patton!!!
Funny you mention Aphex Twin, checkout their cover of Come to Daddy with Mike Patton
Loved hearing you talk through some of these parts. Cool video.
Please listen to Dillinger’s song “I wouldn’t if you didn’t” from their option paralysis album. The transition from spastic start to a beautifully melodic bridge is worth it.
Saw them live once in Amsterdam. One of the most intense concerts I ever attended for sure :D
Seen them live in 2006 at Pittsburgh, fucking love them.
Dillinger is ferkin great 👍 Parasitic Twins is an amazing track as well
I saw them live and yes they were that tight. And they put on an amazing performance while playing this insane nonsense.
I wish someone would explain time signatures in Swedish folk music.
Meshuggah... lol
Much greetings from Norway - Bergen🙂
One of my favorite band in high-school and college many moons ago lol. I don't see a lot of reactions to them haha
3:56 yes, they are that tight live
Live footage is out there, they're not only that tight, they breath fire thrash around like maniacs and destroy venues while being that tight.
One funny thing about their rhytms is that they mentioned in some interviews that thanks to their last drummer, Billy Rymer, they were able to record some of their crazier songs (like prancer from the 2013 album) without grid and metronome. On one hand that is simply mind blowing, on the other they often added having a truly insane number of band practice sessions and long pauses between records.
In fact, since around late 2011, I've considered Billy Rymer to be the best drummer in the world. Although of course that is something relative, there is no doubt that he can be.
tDEP are legends! Also check Car Bomb :-)
Yes
If youre going to start analyzing hardcore, please tell us what you think of Loma Prieta "Fly By Night"
yes +1 on this, or anything off their album Last City, there's even some piano on that one. the arrangement in their songs is honestly so beautiful once you get past all the blown-out grit on the recordings
@@annagraham I agree. Theres some beautiful music going on in a lot of their stuff amidst the chaos
I saw DEP quite a few times in the late 90’s/early 00’s and yea, they could do it live. On top of being incredible musicians, I remember the guitarists being able to run and jump on top of their half stacks mid-song while shedding away…. Also, for one tour they had a guy blowing fire on stage with them.
Ive been to MANY shows throughout the years, and no other group has come close to being as exciting and explosive as DEP was live.
Go back and listen to Calculating Infinity. Still my favorite DEP album.
The good Breyer headphones. Those are all over studios in Chicago.
Starmind Ceremony changed my life.
BEST BAND EVER !!!!! Thanks for giving them a try! Listen to "Destro's Secret!". :)
Really crazy / more unique vocals on there!!! With each song, you discover a new detail, or something you've never heard in the last song!
Hey have you ever listened to Soft Machine? They also have crazy time signatures but in a really interesting unique way imo
I haven't, thx!
Ben’s leads sound like a digital whirlwind on this song
You should give their final album "Dissociation" a shot, it is their best and most diverse
I know the song, possibly my favorite of theirs!
@@iximusic Its such a banger, though the entire album itself is just as good i feel like
Hell yeeeaaahhhh
Mike Patton with DEP was a formative part of my youth. I don’t know that it has been suggested but you both would probably be interested in The Number 12 Looks Like You as well if this peaked your interest.
Not to be confused with Drum & Bass DJ, Dilinja.
Ok, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought they were a screamo band for some reason. Totally didn't expect that.
Why are you listening to all the bands that I like to listen to? xD Didn't expect it with that one.
5:21...madam...
;)
Great video! What app is that?
MIDIculous!
dead eyes
Opeth please
Ben is really cool. Goes to this diner in Morristown every Sunday. Just casually walks in with Juliet Lewis or members of My Chem or COC. Lol. Cool guy.
6:09 WHA HAPPEN?
They are trying to find the key for this DEP song. Lol
Pig Latin is my favorite
I’d like to see something with the number twelve looks like you
But most importantly they/then 🥴
The only band that comes close to Radiohead for me! Huge fan. They scared the shit out of me the first time I heard them, but they slowly became my favorite metal band over time. Mind numbingly creative and ferociously heavy
Heeeeeey, I like me some Evanescence! But yeah, MBV best shoegaze
i think the best description of the time signatures of tdep is just not. they dont use that much theory, i they just try to make the most dissonant jarring songs they can- this is at least true for their first album.
haha yes
MBV 🤌🧡
Plz review / analyze Irony is a dead scene 🙂
🫶🏼
Ahhhhhh…thrash/hardcore.
You should have your mind break and listen to some Ulcerate☝️Their music is the theme music to the end of the world and you never have heard drum work like theirs…
you stop the songs just when they begin to build something different
I love some of their tunes c: I have a dillinger escape plan tank that's kind of slaying and the sales profit went to the trevor project if I remember correctly, so that's pretty cool! c: but then I also saw the guitarist, which is kind of the core of the band post a meme that was low key transphobic one time so.. yeah, I'm not stanning as much as I used to :/
Love yah ixi, besides the technical key arrangements that sound like crap to my ears. i very may have well just lost 15 minutes of my life, that I can’t get back. Do it again and ill suit yah… 8] if you get into some early mid-90s hip hop breakdowns on your channel “holla”
