The algorithm is very specific. Under 24, it doesn't push a full video to recommended feeds, and I get buried; and over 25, it gets considered a short film and goes into different categories, meaning fragrance people don't even get to watch. UA-cam really punishes you unless all you do is TikTok-like shorts "because that's where the money is" (even though I don't make money).
if you want to skip dipping your toe in the cold pool and just jump in, check out dahn oud al-shams by ajmal. its got all the funk and whatnot...might revolt you when you first smell it but it weirdly works awesome in a layering sense
i like to layer dahn oud al-shams by ajmal with jubilation XXV...i also love freaking people out with the ajmal by itself but then showing them how it has a place when its combined with the jubi.
Nicely done D, I do enjoy Oud quite the lot , and have Attars and sprayable offerings from the more renowned artists in the field , and yes they are mostly loaded with complimentary notes to backup the backbone of Oud as the cost of good pure oil is way to expensive to purchase in reality for most of us Oud lovers, I think you nailed it on why Oud was avoided back in the imperial and nobility days of the huge class disparities of the upper class and the commoners, ,Yes I kinda think along with your take which is extremely plausible, I feel that the European elite with their racist and nationalist bias couldn’t possibly smell like the so called inferior nationalities, even if they were Sultans and Princes, they were considered by the Empires of Europe as less civilized and uncultured , god help us don’t some still exist today ,sad sad world.anyways looking forward to your Western take Oud video. Thanks Derek fabulous Oud take vid.🙏✌️👍
I remember in the 80's some people here in the Middle East said Givenchy Gentleman contains oud. If that's true, then it's the first use of oud in western perfumery and not Balenciaga Pour Homme.
I've smelled the deepest vintages and modern. Sometimes civet and patchouli can approximate the phenolic qualities that the fungal aspects of the agarwood resin weep found in oud also produces. A lot of brands can fake out an oud accord with those materials too.
@@Varanis_Ridari Balenciaga arrived, just sprayed it, it's very nice, first thought - Salvador Dali or Furyo adjacent but much lighter in animalics. I don't like to wear these two tough. Can you recommend some good Balenciaga alternative I can acquire without selling my organs on black market?
The website copy does not specify a particular Habit Rouge variant in regards to the oud claim. If it is the HR EDP, this is even more curious, since it came out after YSL M7.
Been reading your stuff on Basenotes and blogs for quite a while. So happy to see you in this platform.
Thanks!
very informative, thanks for information, but too bad your batteries will always run out at the 25 minute mark

I’m very new to oud smell, you ever tried any of the Ajmal colognes/perfumes? I see most of their stuff has oud to some degree.
I think one or two, but I don't remember which.
According to Russian Adam, Ajmal is one of the few perfume houses that uses real Oud and not synthetics.
I've never looked into the brand myself.

Need to smell the shammywams you mention.

This is a very culturally-significant take. Good post. I never considered racism.

@Varanis_Ridari
That's what I was thinking too. They were probably confused and thought the Civet is Oud since the vintage had lots of Civet
Lots of civet, benzoin, and other phenolic goodies.
Nice timing, package with my second ever real oud perfume decant arrived today
And I bought my small Balenciaga PH decant yesterday
Very nice!

Elvis by Elvis Prestley (1989). Trust me on this. Delicious animalic amber dry down.
Bizarrely, the Guerlain site currently claims, "Habit Rouge marked the first use in western perfume-making of oud wood."
They're smoking pills they got from the corner of Pike and 3rd. They should stop that.
I think it was the Eau de Parfum they’re specifically claiming that about, not prior iterations. I have no opinion re: the veracity of their claim
I know I have ferocity about their claim; but that's not the same thing.

And the merry-go-round goes round. 🤣
Diptyque Oud Palao? Your thoughts? It choked me, and I had to return it. Got a refund.
I like stinky ouds, so I enjoyed it
This is one of the few notes i like to avoid as much as possible. Maybe real one smells good, but most synthetic stuff hurts my head
Most synthetic stuff isn't even close.
I've dabbled just a bit with real oud. Not for me. Oud Inifini spooked me.
Oud Infini is also civet and castoreum. It's very discontinued. I missed the boat on that one.
