"There's designer, there's niche and there's Guerlain." I think this sums things up Guerlain perfectly as they produce classics and are in a class of their own
True. But at the same time I think all "traditional" houses fall into that third category. Caron, 4711, Trumper etc. all hail from a time long before there were designer fragrances and those houses were the mainstream, what would render the classification "niche" meaningless.
Would you ever be interested in reviewing the Guerlain classics? I'd love to hear your views on Jicky, Apres L'ondee, LHB, Mitsouko, Vol De Nuit, etc......
Great reviews! I also don't count Guerlain as a 'designer' since there isn't a connection to a fashion house - its a true perfume house. I need to try a few of your top scents here. I would include the original Habit Rouge as well because for me it is really so different from the EDP. Glad that Heritage is on here as well, I think its a criminally underrated scent that should get more attention.
Guerlain is a legendary house. Your list doesn’t disappoint! A lot of those are my favorites too. Overall favs : Mon Guerlain, Idylle, linstant magic, linstant de guerlain, many from aqua allegoria, santal royal, musc noble; from art of materials : cruel gardenia, double vanille and angelique noir. From mens side fav is Lhomme ideal EDp and extreme.
Guerlain is classic, perfume artistry. Labels are of no consequence. The chance to smell Iris Grenache is almost worth a diversion from the country’s I plan to travel to on my next vacation.
This is a fantastic list. I just purchased Songe d'un Bois d'Été, finally caving after about three years. The use of the smoky cumin and oud with jasmine is mind-blowing. The only recommendation I'd make to viewers since so many watch these videos, is to try Frenchy and make their own assessment. To me this is very very bright, zingy, and zesty like a classic eau de cologne, but very long lasting somehow, and doesn't have the warmth of your comparators like Chanel Pour Monsieur or the YSL to my nose, which to me is a plus in that genre. Just a quick thought. Thank you for the excellent video!
Love this house so much and I’ll call it “niche” but I’m not that vested in the idea. Never cared that much how people distinguish the houses in that sense.
Hello, thank you for your video ! For me, as a French, Guerlain is neither a designer (those are houses who started in fashion first and branched out in perfumerie, imo) nor a niche house because it's a very old established house. As I see it, Guerlain is a classic genuine perfumerie house like Caron, Creed or Penhaligon's.
I love Guerlain! I own Vetiver, Habit Rouge, Heritage, Herba Fresca, Teazzura, L’Homme Ideal edp and cologne, Homme L’Eau Boisee, Du Coq, and Cologne Imperiale. I’m anticipating experiencing the Les Absolus D’Orient series. I’ve always thought of Guerlain as a designer; but, what do I know.
Shalimar Eau de Cologne is a really good choice as it has a bit more smoky incense. Vanilla is still strong. Fantastic concentration. Habit Rouge EdP has oud as well. I get a more dusty patchouli and oud vibe with the leather and rose. Some sandalwood. Not as much citrus or vanilla.
The current Shalimar EdC is only in the US I think but you can grab it at CVS or other places for under $50. It leans more masculine and is from the same concrete of the parfum. Just in EdC concentration. Angelique Noir is incredible. Theres like a hint of green in it that really makes it stand out.
Guerlain is in a league and class of its own 🤔 I just think of them as a perfume house and not necessarily niche or designer. I love almost everything they produce, and that absolu d'orient collection is bomb 👌 have you tried cuir intense or encens mythique yet? Those for me are my favorites I think 🤔 but I own and love bois mysterieux and santal royal also. Great video.
The only Guerlain I own is Habit Rouge Dress Code EDP in the original formulation. It was a blind buy and hated it at first. It's grown on me and I love it now!
I have majority of these as Guerlain is my favorite house but my favorite is one that's not even featured on here and I'm so surprised. It's Derby and it is a fantastic, masterpiece of a chypre fragrance. I have yet to try Angelique but Derby rules for me.
I really love the red bottle samsara thats been discontinued.i really never cared for shalimar its very powdery.i want to try the santal royal!! Loved this video thank you!
Absolutely love Angelique Noire. It's perfect for all weather, optimum when a bit chilly. I love it so much that I keep a spare bottle in case I run out. Gourmand Coquin I don't like as much as I thought I would. I find it a bit too light and close to the skin after 1-2 hours. I also recommend Encens Mystique for the cold winter times. But avoid it at all cost in the summer cos to me, it smells of dead animal. 😂 I've noted down 3 & 4 for when I travel to Europe next. Thanks for the video!
I just got 2 bottles of l'instant in the original bottles. My last original bottle, which is so different from the tall rectangular ones, is down to a quarter inch. This is my only scent since it debuted. I've never been more pleased with anything else. I paid $125 each for these bottles. I would have played more. I use the edt rectangular bottle I have for room spray! Love your videos. There are too many scents. I feel lucky to have found mine. Brad in NYC.
I love Guerlain. Thank you for talking about these perfumes. And also about le Frenchy. Nobody talks about this one but I love it. 😍 The ones that I really enjoy that you didn't mention are Joyeuse Tubéreuse, Cuir Beluga, Aqua allegoria Limon verde, Shalimar souffle de parfum, Musc noble, l'homme idéal cool, Imagine, ... I really do love Santal royal but I'm so sad it doesn't work on my skin, same thing for Spiritueuse double vanille 😟
I started my fragrance journey recently & Guerlain Ideal EDP is mentioned everywhere & I could only find the EDT so I got it. At first, I wasn’t that impressed. But after a month or two I find myself spraying it more & more. The cherry almond is just so different from everything else popular now. Guerlain is very subtle but it grows on you, at least it did for me.
Thanks again for another great review. I'm sure it takes effort to put out a detailed review daily, and I appreciate it. Thanks to your introduction, I recently tried, loved and picked up Jovoy's ID which is truly amazing, and made me aware of how much I like the vetiver patchouli combination! Please keep it coming.
Guerlain is "Nisigner". Excellent video. Ideal cologne for summer - pick it up cheap these days, reference vetiver, shalimar is good value - rebanded as a unisex recently i think, must try Bois Mysterieux if i can find it in Aussie..
How did you know I am testing Guerlain fragrances for the first time in my life today? Can you see me through the screen? It makes this review ultra exciting for me.
Enjoy the journey on which the House of Guerlain will take you. Please take Sebastian up on his invitation to watch his Guerlain videos. Also, watch the Wafts from the Loft video on Guerlain. Dan and Jo did a great job! After you discover the great fragrances in their current formulations, then you can seek out the classics in their vintage formulations. When you smell the older formulations, you'll realize why Guerlain is not designer or niche. Please remember to sample all of Guerlain's fragrances, and don't get hung up on men's, women's and unisex. Jicky, Mitsouko, L'Heure Bleue, and Shalimar have their place in history.
Wow Mike Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it, and will definitely take your suggestions into heart. I can't wait to check out those videos and also try the classics. I take it you adore this house. Today was my first day with Guerlain, but I am looking forward to exploring this house.
You are most welcome! One word of caution. I think Dan offers a comment in the video to which I referred or another about the obsession that can develop in seeking vintage formulations of classic fragrances. Heed his advice. I’ve seen the same caution given elsewhere. It’s sound advice. When you smell a truly wonderful classic from its heyday, you realize that you can step through a window in time, and it’s addictive. Please let me know if I can help.
Ideal EDP absolutely beautiful not the greatest performer but I don’t feel it’s the type of scent that needs to be beast mode. Woman could wear it for sure. Beautiful
I just did a blind buy of L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme EDP and I am in LOVE with it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to last very long, but I don't care because it's so gorgeous. I plan on getting a larger bottle. Thanks for the info on Guerlain.
Shalimar (from the 70s &80s), L'Heure Bleue I find addictive. But for years I didn't feel mature enough to wear it. Now I am. And where is it and does it smell anything like it did in the 80s?
Just bought a bottle of Angelique noir and I love it. I went to the Guerlain boutique in Saks and took the fragrance test to help determine my scent profile. This was at number 1 and indeed it is number 1. Have you tried Crazy Gardenia? Loved the scent but worried about the sillage and longevity.
This is my favorite fragrance brand. Thank you for doing this great list. You are one ☝️ of best reviewers. Love ❤️ this list. It's very nice. Very nice and classy scent house. Classics and best master collections. Love your take on the house Sebastian. Bless up one love General.
Great video! This is my favorite house. I consider Guerlain niche since they don’t produce clothes, handbags, or shoes. Parent company might, ok, but not Guerlain. I consider that the dividing line (fashion or no fashion) rather than some judgement call over the quality of the perfume or the type of release. Also, lots of niche houses have perfumes that can be considered really basic (MFK, Byredo) but that doesn’t make them less niche.
Guerlain is exclusively a perfume house like Creed, Caron, Floris, Molinard, Houbigant, Coty, Penhaligon's. they produce nothing but fragrances through their in house pefumers and not through perfumers that are working for flavor and fragrance companies like IFF, Givuadan, Firmenich, Symrise.
I have l'homme ideal with the logo back in the sticker on bottle. Is there a fragrance (reformulation) difference with the one without that logo on the back? Great video!!
Been noticing a lot of Guerlain videos. Finally decided to pull the trigger on some fragrances. Just purchased Heritage EDT for myself, and Shalimar and Mitsouko for family who's birthdays are around the corner.
One frag for life? 1st choice: Habit Rouge EDP 2nd Mouchoir de Monsieur. No Mitsouko in list? Herba Fresca? Imperiale? Du Coq? There are so many masterpieces and so many duds. The duds all smell great but are often better suited as aftershaves.
I think an argument can be made, that the dichotomy "designer vs. niche" doesn't cover everything. I would argue that what we would call niche houses can be seen as a counter-revolution against the dominance of the original designer houses after WWI and especially WWII. But what about the houses established BEFORE that? Guerlain? Caron? Geo F. Trumper? 4711? Heck, even Penhaligon's? Designers? No. Niche? The term "niche" requires the existence of a mainstream - and those names WERE the mainstream. I would coin terms like "old world parfumeries" or "traditional houses" as a third pedigree.
What’s the best guerlain fragrance for men. I want fresh smart but stuff that can go with any occasion. I currently wear creed aventus and want to move from it
I have Songe d'un Bois d'Ete and I heard that BOIS MYSTERIEUX is the same scent in new bottle. In my opinion this split does not have any sense today. I mean mainstream vs niche (not designers - because it is only small group in mainstream), but still such split have no sense, some niche are already bought and are in the same business groups like mainstream companies (L'Artisan, Penhaligon's and many others, are they not niche then?), mainstream companies are lunching special series which are more expensive then most of niche (are they niche scents? as many reviewers qualified TF private blend as a niche?) Most popular definition of niche, is that it is company which produce only scents, so Olivier Durbano, Frapin and many others are not niche according to this definition. I would say that today the only two categories have any sense - artisan perfumery vs mainstream, but it is very subjective judgment what artisan means. And second is the price tag. For me some mainstream companies producing very niche quality and artisan perfumes like CdG, Costume National, Maison Margiela, ETRO, etc. and there are many "niche" companies which are producing boring mainstream like scents. So, classification of perfume producers nowadays is not easy subject. And I agree that Guerlain is a Guerlain, the only category it fits, is the category I am using for myself and it is OLD HOUSES category, for companies which were producing perfumes before IIWW.
Great review as usual***.Thx for the share. Do like Guerlain house a lot, well I guess everyone does:). My absolute favorite from this awesome house is: L'Insatant De Guerlain Pour Homme( and always do have one extra as back-up ) thx and have a great Sunday mate. cheers from rainy Stockholm
I Love Guerlain! They have alot of fragrances, and there's many more left for me to explore. The one i like most atm is heritage! Thanks for the video! Cheers
Great video, Sebastian! I'm not familiar with your top five, and Guerlain is my favorite house. I am of the school that the House of Guerlain is neither designer nor niche. Guerlain did what no one else has done. It was founded in 1828 and released Eau de Cologne Imperiale in 1853 under it's founder Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain. In it's second generation, his son, Aime created Eau de Cologne du Coq (1894) and the landmark Jicky (1899) and expanded the house with his brother Gabriel. Jacques and Pierre, Gabriel's sons, received the business as the third generation. Jacques became the third master perfumer and released Mouchoir de Monsieur (1904), Apres L'Ondee (1906), L'Heure Bleue (1912), Mitsouko (1919) and Shalimar (1925) and Vol de Nuit (1933)! All of these fragrances are still produced today. Still, one can't appreciate these fragrances in the current formulations, even though they are good. Yesterday, I compared 1970's versions of Shalimar EDC and Extrait on each arm. The difference was clear, but the most interesting part was that as the extrait dried down, I discovered what reviewers refer to as "dirty" or "animalic". I know that Habit Rouge has been referred to as Shalimar for men, but you can't compare vintage Habit Rouge to vintage Shalimar. Smelling vintage Shalimar or even the vintage Eau de Guerlain, which I used all summer, is like stepping through a window in time, and that window, for me, only extends back to the 70's. What was Shalimar like when it was released in the 20's and flappers were wearing it at speakeasies? Think of the message that they were sending and Shalimar was part of that message? The fragrances released by Guerlain are woven into history. That, my dear Sebastian, has earned this house the distinction of being neither designer nor niche. They are simply Guerlain.

Thank you sooo much for detailed review about the notes of each perfume , great efforts and absultely helps alot
You didn't talk about ROSA GRASSE from Guerlain
"There's designer, there's niche and there's Guerlain." I think this sums things up Guerlain perfectly as they produce classics and are in a class of their own
You beat me to it!!
True. But at the same time I think all "traditional" houses fall into that third category. Caron, 4711, Trumper etc. all hail from a time long before there were designer fragrances and those houses were the mainstream, what would render the classification "niche" meaningless.
Too true
Agreed.
Don't worry about labeling houses. Just call Guerlain the king of fragrance houses.
Have you seen the new limited edition bottles? They are beautiful but sooooo expensive.
Use to be
I feel like Guerlain transcends definition or category. Timeless. Eternal. Beautiful.
Would you ever be interested in reviewing the Guerlain classics? I'd love to hear your views on Jicky, Apres L'ondee, LHB, Mitsouko, Vol De Nuit, etc......

Guerlain is a niche house to me because they do not have a clothing design business as well. Iris ganache haunts me, I desire it so very much.
My favourite is angelique noire and then rose barbare. Samsara is great as well.
My favorites is “Mitsouko” hands down
Battal rayed absolutely brilliant frag.
Can you say what makes it great?
Guerlain is classic, perfume artistry. Labels are of no consequence. The chance to smell Iris Grenache is almost worth a diversion from the country’s I plan to travel to on my next vacation.
Guerlain homme intense is my favorite ! Thank you for sharing , I need to try more of them !
My favorite is curi intense the projection is unbelievable. You should really try it.
Ya its an absolute monster of a scent Sebastian would love it im sure of it.
I love Guerlain fragrances. My favourites are L'heure Bleue and Mitsouko but during the summer I enjoyed Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune
Love, love, love Guerlain. I recently added shalimar EDP to my collection and I love it 😍. Looking forward to visiting Guerlain Paris.

Guerlain Vetiver and l'homme idéal are great im so GUERLAIN
how is homme leu boise? worth to buy?
Shalimar Eau de Cologne is a really good choice as it has a bit more smoky incense. Vanilla is still strong. Fantastic concentration.
Habit Rouge EdP has oud as well. I get a more dusty patchouli and oud vibe with the leather and rose. Some sandalwood. Not as much citrus or vanilla.

Angelique Noir is incredible. Theres like a hint of green in it that really makes it stand out.
Love the Guerlain brand! Great review.
Niche!!! Great quality!!! I own L’instant ( old bottle) et L’homme ideal edp... my mom still wears shalimar!!! A classic!!!

Try the EDT.👍😍
I have majority of these as Guerlain is my favorite house but my favorite is one that's not even featured on here and I'm so surprised. It's Derby and it is a fantastic, masterpiece of a chypre fragrance. I have yet to try Angelique but Derby rules for me.
I really love the red bottle samsara thats been discontinued.i really never cared for shalimar its very powdery.i want to try the santal royal!! Loved this video thank you!
Love Guerlain. They easily have the best collection of fragrances & its huge too.
I own santal royal..and it's my favourite fragrance from Guerlain..
I love Guerlain. Thank you for talking about these perfumes. And also about le Frenchy. Nobody talks about this one but I love it. 😍
The ones that I really enjoy that you didn't mention are Joyeuse Tubéreuse, Cuir Beluga, Aqua allegoria Limon verde, Shalimar souffle de parfum, Musc noble, l'homme idéal cool, Imagine, ...
I really do love Santal royal but I'm so sad it doesn't work on my skin, same thing for Spiritueuse double vanille 😟
Cuir beluga!!! Mannnnnn off the charts in the dry down. Have it on right now as a blind spray in store.. Off the charts....
I started my fragrance journey recently & Guerlain Ideal EDP is mentioned everywhere & I could only find the EDT so I got it. At first, I wasn’t that impressed. But after a month or two I find myself spraying it more & more. The cherry almond is just so different from everything else popular now. Just got Bois Mysterieux and Encens Mythique personally have tested both for a day Slight Edge to Encens Mythique
Great video! I am surprised that Derby and Chamade did not make it to your list.
I'm wearing habit rouge l'eau and really enjoying it in the autumn London weather
Awesome!!
I think there are 3 categories of fragrance. The 1st is designer, the 2nd is niche & the 3rd is Guerlain.
Guerlain is "Nisigner". Excellent video. Ideal cologne for summer - pick it up cheap these days, reference vetiver, shalimar is good value - rebanded as a unisex recently i think, must try Bois Mysterieux if i can find it in Aussie..

Gulp. I will need to be cautious then! And when that time approaches, I will definitely call for help.
Songe d'un Bois d'Ete and Mitsouko are fantastic.
I love Guerlain regardless niche or designer. 😍 Great review!
I’m surprised I didn’t see Mon Précieux Nectar in the list, probably the best Honey fragrance I’ve ever smelled.
Linear but superb
Shalimar (from the 70s &80s), L'Heure Bleue I find addictive. But for years I didn't feel mature enough to wear it. Now I am. And where is it and does it smell anything like it did in the 80s?
I love these top 20s! Can you make a Tom Ford top 20? 👍✔
My favorite from Guerlain is Embruns d'Ylang 😍
Just bought a bottle of Angelique noir and I love it. I went to the Guerlain boutique in Saks and took the fragrance test to help determine my scent profile. This was at number 1 and indeed it is number 1. Have you tried Crazy Gardenia? Loved the scent but worried about the sillage and longevity.
I have tried the Gardenia yes but it was not my fave. Will try again! :)
This is my favorite fragrance brand. Thank you for doing this great list. You are one ☝️ of best reviewers. Love ❤️ this list. It's very nice. Very nice and classy scent house. Classics and best master collections. Love your take on the house Sebastian. Bless up one love General.
Splendido! Io ho Vetiver, Habit Rouge e Heritage. Guerlain TOP assoluto !
Heritage EDT is my favorite.
Love your vids. Can you do a top Mancera fragrances for the winter and summer respectively? I’m a big fan of the house :)
Love Guerlain. Very old house, I guess both niche and designer. Aqua Allegoria series is heavenly. Thank you for this stunning review.
the fragrances from the Aqua Allegoria line are purrr-fect in summer; ideal eau de colognes
Gourmand Coquin has been my favorite scent of this winter season. It's absolutely unisex and just tremendous!
You got me watching reviews and often i do not have time for you videos due to length but this is a must watch your right i love this house
I loooooove Guerlain
My favourite Guerlain is Cuir Beluga... maybe you should check it out...
I have checked it out but it hasn't clicked. I'll check again! :)
Great video! This is my favorite house. I consider Guerlain niche since they don’t produce clothes, handbags, or shoes. Parent company might, ok, but not Guerlain. I’m gonna wear the original Guerlain Vetiver in protest! LOL! Interesting list. Definitely need to get my nose on Heritage soon
My fav Guerland : elixir charnel coquin
I have l'homme ideal with the logo back in the sticker on bottle. Is there a fragrance (reformulation) difference with the one without that logo on the back? Great video!!
I've been wanting to get a full bottle of Angelique Noire for the longest time but still haven't pulled the trigger. Definitely my favorite Guerlain.
Been noticing a lot of Guerlain videos. Finally decided to pull the trigger on some fragrances. Just purchased Heritage EDT for myself, and Shalimar and Mitsouko for family who's birthdays are around the corner.
Mitsuoko only parfum
Mitsouko forever!
Hi! Do you think Mysterieux is suitable for ladies?
Thanks for timing!
Hi, would like to see more favourite lists of various scent makers.
Heritage EDT, all day, every day.
Rarely disagree but the Habit EDT is quite diff than the EDP. Iprefer EDT
For me not matter I love guerlain fragance I own like 10 or 15th fragance from guerlain and love it. Nice video sebastian
You can NEVER get tired of Guerlain Vetiver haha.
Encens Mythique is my fave
What's the closest alternative to Iris Ganache, since it's very hard to find these days and very pricey?
There is an iris from Lancome that I find has similarities! I'll have to compare! :)
It could be a top 200. 😏
Fantastic choices as always 🙏
One frag for life? 1st choice: Habit Rouge EDP 2nd Mouchoir de Monsieur. No Mitsouko in list? Herba Fresca? Imperiale? Du Coq? There are so many masterpieces and so many duds. The duds all smell great but are often better suited as aftershaves.
So sad LUI is not in this list. Please help yourself and get one as it is already in the discounters shelves
Cuir intense. An absolute Masterpiece

I lovevthis line...i wear saltan royal
Best house in the world.... can you do a video review on Guerlain Oud Essential. Nice video bro blessings.
Mitsouko for me!
Great video disappointed re position of Santal Royal but hey ho....thanks Sebastian 🙏
LOL! Yeah it's an odd one for me because it's called Santal Royal and I get more Oud and Rose. Hope that makes sense?
What's your opinion of the current Derby? I've recently tried the 1985 version and it's wonderful.
Guerlain is niche quality with designer prices in some frags.

The Guerlain house is amazing.
Hello Sebastian, Habit Rouge edp is Nice. I really like also l’Initial (collection « les Légendaires ») which is my signature scent ❤
Awesome.
Guerlain is more of a luxury designer fragrances. I have 3 Aqua Allegoria. Calabria and Mandarine are in my wishlist. 😁
I think are both, like royal santal for me is a niche and Guerlain LHOMME EDP or cologne are designers,
I Love Guerlain!
Mike Lucotch cool 😎
