I live on Long Island here there is a place called luxury beauty supply that sells fragrance and cosmetics at a discount they currently sell frags from Frederic Malle Tom ford and even Killian. I’ve been noticing they have been dumping a lot of Frederic Malle lately and I guess this explains why. I asked why they sell these particular brands and the sales associate says that their store is owned by the same umbrella company that owns them frag houses and they sell off over stock and discontinued frags. I picked up a 50 ml of French lover and a 50 ml of Fougere dargant at 60% off. I see now they have Beau du jour in the private line bottles in limited supply. All definitely seem legitimate and smell just fine. I’m glad I found the place
Good timing on this video. There was a period in the early 2000s where this house really hit an all time high - POAL, En Passant, L'Eau d'Hiver, Musc Ravageur, Noir Epices etc
@@Varanis_Ridari The current prices have really priced me out! However I have built up a small collection of 4 bottles over the years through the grey market - I’ll prefer to profit from others’ compulsive buying :)
@@Varanis_Ridari You mentioned Malle is on your big 4 no nos for the gray market, point taken. I actually got all my malles in used bottle format from other collectors, for a reasonable price. I guess staying patient and looking for what I really want is key. Those matte cap ones are really hard to find and really expensive these days nonetheless!
Cheers Derek, all the shananagans,is mind blowing lol 😂, to be honest on my Malles if I have a do over I wouldn’t buy the half or more of them , totally overpriced and really overrated imo, but to each of us our own ,appreciate the good info and your on point history lesson ✌️🙏👍
I'm kinda the same way. Always was a fan of Musc Ravageur, and really liked some of the others like Iris Poudre, Promise, French Lover and VetiverX, but the price was never justified. I just wouldn't wear them enough. Truth be told, I did end up with a partial of Portrait of a Lady, but it was such a good deal that I couldn't pass it up. Shame that Freddy walked, but like you said, all the signs were there and it's pretty consistent with the pattern. And once you sell out, then..."the leader is good, the leader is great, we surrender our will, as of this date." 🤭
The difference between rich people who can afford extremely expensive perfume and us common mortals, is that most of them will never know how a 150$ fragrance can be "better" than a 2000$. And I can give many examples of the top of my head. The value perception is so subjective it makes this subject super hard to discuss.
I've smelled some of those $2000 fragrances too, like the Clive Christian pure oils and Imperial coronation editions, the Arabian Malles (The Night), Spirit of Dubai. Honestly? If you didn't tell me the price, I'd have no idea they were that much.
Love the canary in the coal mine metaphor. As far as FM goes, I too am not willing to pay their prices. The Night was my first foray into "real oud" territory as that was what the owner of a niche perfumery showed me when I asked for oud 4 years ago. I remember my then gf and me recoiling from the indolic jasmine and oud in it, but later on I was hooked. The price is ridiculous, but the scent is intoxicating. My other experience with FM was a sample of Rose et Cuir I got at the same perfumery when I purchased something else - I hated it, the green rose bush is really not my cup of tea.
The Night is really good, but the price is also mindblowingly ridiculous - it's about $2.5k per bottle here in Singapore and pretty much beyond my entire perfume budget for the year. And not to mention, you can get similar oud profiles from a Middle Eastern brand for a mere fraction of that price.
@@Spicybasilleaf Yeah, it's 1450€/100 ml here in Croatia, that's like a tad bit more than the average monthly salary in the richest part of the country. I get my cravings for oud satisfied elsewhere, Ajmal for example.
when you spoke about the clout chasing buyer Acne Studios by Frederic Malle immediately came to mind. Acne would be the last brand i can think of that would pair well with malle, it's young vapid and definitely void of artistry. They kept the prices high but the quality on that one is appalling.
I was bummed to hear about this, I've only got a couple of his scents I really like and probably wouldn't replace them anyway. I really looked forward to Uncut Gem and it was so blah.... It's all bullshyt I suppose, but when I went into their cool little LA boutique, I always felt a sort of "presence" of Frederick there. Now, that won't feel the same. I know there are some very hard core fans of much of the Malle line and I feel bad for that. Many are quite unique.
@@Varanis_Ridari I've noticed there's a lot they make I like okay, but not enough to wear frequently enough to justify the expense. Almost finished my small bottle of your favorite- Monsieur.
I like this brand and respect it but it’s not my favorite. Own nine of them. I ship them to the US from Uk stores like Harrod’s or Selfridges. Even with the expensive shipping, it’s still significantly cheaper than buying in the U.S. My hot take re: the brand is that I enjoy Uncut Gem and disagree that it’s in the style of a mass market designer. Don’t get that at all.
@@Varanis_Ridarithey’re like a hundred dollars cheaper in the UK. Crazy story: Once I notified Malle that the box inside the sleeve of my Monsieur was missing the brand logo. They apologized and shipped me a bottle of Music for a While for free.

We have nothing like that here in Seattle

I don't trust the gray market for this brand. Too many counterfeits.

u deserve a lot more subs the knowledge on this channel is great. Is there any house that isnt being neutered? maybe papillon?
Independents are mostly safe

POAL and Carnal Flower are already classics imo, i can put them with any all time greats and they will hold their own without a problem.
I feel they'd be safe from any culling, but Noir Épices is already gone lol

Luckily there are lots of good ouds from the Middle East that cost a fraction of that one.

Agreed
I wear Noir Epices 50% of the time. Seems like a fragrance that could get axed in the future. But as Fredric Malle would say: c’est la vie
I think it already has. Disappeared from the website

Uncut Gem was the warning shot, while Acne is the torpedo that sank the ship, IMO
Did Tom Ford really leave his company? I didn't know about it. Explains why we are having boring releases nowadays
Oh yeah, he left just recently.
L'Eau d'Hiver was the one that I really liked but the price is obscene
It is. Nice scent though
