1st amp I ever had back in 06 or 07 idr. I just wish I knew more/had more experience. Didn't have it long enough and was too new to really experience it. Always wanted another from that era just to try it now that I'm at the level of playing that I am.

I bought the TSL122 right when they came out in ‘98, or ‘99. Thought it was a great amp (especially the crunch channel). Then the bias/heat problems started. As I had more amplifiers, I just sat it aside for several years. Finally had it fixed (new mother board) tubes. Cost around $600.00. Marshall did send me a new mother board free, even though it was long out of warranty. The board was the majority of the cost (around $400.00) Anyway…It’s my favorite amp now. Bias stays locked on, and no more heat problems. I do think the mother board problems gave the TSL’s a well deserved black eye, but they are great amps to dial in. Best thing is no pedals needed. Great demo, and fantastic playing.

I revisited this video a few times over the 2 year... and because of it, I just picked up a 2005 DSL 100. Not crazy about the power tubes it came with... 6CA7's, missing that traditional bark the EL34's have. A bit heavier on the bottom end also and a smoother or rounder top end. Almost reminds me of the 6L6. The TSL is also on my wish list, was my #1 choice between the two, but with all the board issues i've read about and the fact that Marshall no longer makes those replacement boards, i'm kinda worried about grabbing out.
Thanks Euge for the great content and always the great playing!

So many opinions fly around online when comparing amps like this. Of the very few that have actually played through both, it's rarely based on more than a few minutes demoing in a noisy guitar store. This is different. Time to properly consider tone an and features with a proper AB comparison.
To me, they both sound similar but awesome. The flexibility of the tsl wins.

Hi, great comparison. I have the TSL 122 combo and the DSL 100 head with a marshall 2x12 with the same speakers array. The DSL sounds fuller through the 2x12 cabinet than TSL. The TSL combo lacks the low end that the 2x12 have. This is because the combo is open back and the cabinet is closed back. The DSL have more sag too and more in your face sound. But I really like and prefer the midrange and warmth of the TSL but I have to connect an eq in the loop to get a kicking low end. Both are great amps.

I've had a TSL602 since 2004 and it has been a solid reliable amplifier for me. The wolverine speakers aren't the greatest but when turned up past 8 on the master they come to life and sound good to me even though they got replaced with a Marshall Heritage and a Vintage speaker pair early on because I can't play that loud everywhere. On a side note, I recently installed a H Creamback with the Marshall Vintage and WOW it sounds nice and don't forget to crank the master volume.

Not that I recall (I borrowed the DSL from a friend to do the video). I always set the gain quite low no matter the amp and then just boost it with overdrive for more saturation.

The SL-X is the best 900 IMO. It’s like a JCM800 but more gain on tap. On the other 900s (Dual Reverb etc.) part of the gain is made with a clipping diode like on the Silver Jubilee but the SL-X is full on preamp tube gain so it’s kinda like adding an extra preamp tube to JCM800 (which is a classic 800 mod).
DSL & TSL are also 100% tube gain.
But they’re all great if you use an OD in front of the amp like me. I just like the sound and feel of an OD (especially SD-1) in front of an already slightly overdriven amp.

DSL is for the common Marshall user, rock, pop, dad rock etc. Gary Holt actually uses the DSL boosted w/maxon sdpro9 for Slayer (no idea if the DSL is modded or what) Great amp, just not ‘beefy’ enough for me when I tried it out, admittedly it was the dsl 50watt version. When I jump on the TSL it just sounds fuller, more alive yet heavier and meaner, checks all the boxes off for me. The TSL is the amp I wish I knew how to use (eq and boost properly) back when I was touring.

The DSL is so much better because the green crunch channel on the DSL is bang on the classic Marshall tone. If you want an 800 but you can't afford one, this is as close as you're going to get on a budget.
I don't even touch the red channel on mine. You can get any tone you want out of the green channel and a boost pedal.

  • @SteveStoneMetal
    @SteveStoneMetal Рік тому

I own both of these as well.

Another great video and comparison. I think your videos and comments are very informative. I guess I would be in the minority here because I like the DSL a little better,. To me it sounds more open and more JCM800-ish while the TSL is more compressed. I have a 1984 JCM 4104 50w 2x12 combo that my tech recommended KT77's for with the bright cap removed. I was trying to get a Bluesbreaker-type vibe with this amp. I don't know if I achieved that, but it sounds really great and I can easily get Angus/Malcom tones from it with a little help from an OCD. If I drive it harder with a Tonebone Plexitube, I'm able to get fantastic higher gain tones. I was wondering why you chose KT77's over EL34's for the DSL.

Awesome comparison! I love your playing too. I have a TSL, now for almost 10 years. I've always wondered if I should get a DSL too based on people talking online but I've never noticed a big difference playing them in a store - but that's only worth so much (different guitar, speakers, room etc).
I originally picked the TSL because I found the "red" channel to be great and very similar to the DSL, but it did two things the DSL didn't - 1 mid boost on the clean channel which is just amazing for jazz style stuff, and 2 the crunch channel can have separate eq and gain from lead but with the same core tone, so I run the gain really low on that channel and get a pretty decent plexi-style mid gain sound that could be rolled down with the guitar volume - I actually use the crunch channel almost like a dirty clean channel and it's just great for that. Swapping from the low gain crunch to the lead channel feels natural almost like kicking on a boost up front and it just flows together so nicely.
Forgot to mention - I kept expecting you to play "Unchained" or "Lay It Down." I really feel with the right speakers and mic these can get very very close that that gritty palm mute sound usually associated with variac/modded plexis of the late 70s.
My only complaint is I wish the mid-shift switches were mid boosts instead of cuts, I find those pretty useless for my style of playing.

Yeah that's kind of weird I heard that too I have both but I have to play through a modeling configuration otherwise I'd probably be in jail or definitely being hit with disturbing the peace that's the name of my band but do you think the judge wood give me a break? I doubt it I don't think he's a headbanger he's probably more of a gavel banger!

I honestly like both, but yes, the TSL has a little more meat in the tone and more versatile. I would use one or the other depending on what I was using it for and wanted for the situation. I would keep playing and trying different tubes as I do with my amps shaping the tone for each till I just can't get enough of a particular tonality.

Well the EL34 is the fastest "break up" tube in terms of power amp distortion. With kt77 you really need to crank the shit out of your amp to have it sound good. DSL was originally designed for el34 so you should try them biased for around 42-43 mv per tube. You will thank me later ;)

The safe operational range of the EL34 is between 10-40mA per tube. Using the current method of biasing, any current within this range that produces the tone you desire is the "correct" setting. This of course will differ from amp to amp and the type of tone you're after. Anything over 40mA per tube will turn your amp into a mud bog when you crank the volume, and will almost certainly shorten the life of your tubes. I personally like my bias running a little on the cold side (about 25mA per tube) on my '98 DSL100, this gives me plenty of headroom, so my time domain effects (delay, reverb) doesn't distort, and the tone doesn't turn into flubby mush at higher volume. And the original Genalex Gold Lion KT77 (and KT66/KT88) were a Tetrode tube designed to be used in Hi-Fi amps. To my ears, Tetrode tubes sound like dogshit in a Marshall... although the KT88 are killer in an Ampeg SVT. "The Trainwreck Pages" by my friend the late great Ken Fischer of Trainwreck Amplifiers describes how to adjust bias using the current method.

@@EugeValovirta230V The great thing about using the current method is that you can play through your amp and your tech can adjust it on the fly to the tone you like. You can Google "The Trainwreck Pages" and that will explain it in much better detail. Good luck! 🎸

ECC83s wont give much of a difference but the kt77 will definitely have a difference... if the tsl had kt77s too, id sound even better (my guess though since kt77 tend to open up the sound, giving a better growl, just like it happens with a diezel vh4 i guess).. But great job on the comparison anyway 🤟🤘

Which do you prefer? I’m hoping next week I’ll have my hands on a ‘76 JMP 2204. Not sure if ill need to mod it. Would like to make a switchable SIR 34 mod in it. Just found out some of those early JMP 2204’s were not cascaded gain? Won’t be able to try out the one I’m getting ahead of time. I have a jcm 2000 dsl100 head, considering trading that for a tsl100 212 combo so I can get out of the garage and in to the house sometimes when I do play.

@@astro2069 To my experience they're very similar but TSL have 3 channels and DSL two. I guess DSL is a bit more reliable 'cos some TSLs are known to have some design / construction flaws. Mine had a grounding issue on the speaker outs but a tech fixed that and I haven'd had any problems with the amp since.

i think the DSL is better for reproducing classic 80s hardrock Van Halen 1/ACDC type tone while the TSL would be better for 90s metal/thrash metal type tone. DSL sounds sharp and shiny while TSL is heavy and means buisness
