You might want to try using a skateboard bearing instead of running wood on wood. They are cheap and easy to find. And as close to friction free as any bearing around that size that I have found. I use them on wooden clocks. The inside diameter is a bit above 1/4". I insert a short piece of 9/64" brass tubing from the local hobby shop and that tubing has a 1/4" I.D. making it a perfect fit for a 1/4" shaft.
Steve, I've made some kinetic sculptures as well. You should give a constant force spring a try for power. Drill press quill return springs can be easy to find and sized about right. A ratchet and pawl mechanism can be cut from wood, and either magnets or centrifugal force used for timing of the power being applied. Ball bearings are needed to get long rotation times. With proper timing a single wind can run for many hours. Your "wheels" of the sculpture should be weighted on one side, so when done spinning they settle weight down, lining up your magnet to temporarily release the pawl on the ratchet and allow the spring to activate.
Years ago I made something similar. Is easy to made 2 patterns move. Its not so complex. Also there are engines with constant speed driven by 60 Hz. I buy those for made some clocks but never end that project.
I’m thinking of cutting these out on my cnc router when I get it back up and running. I am eliminating using a pc to control it to using an SMC5-5-n-n controller. When I build this sculpture, I am going to make the front one turn the opposite direction to make a better effect.
I CNC milled just the wheel parts, worked great! My grandfather cut the spirals on the scroll saw but we had a terrible time trying to scroll saw or drill the wheel holes to fit nicely on the motor without gluing it to the shaft. I'm sure you could CNC the whole thing but it feels like cheating :)
Hi Ron. The DeWalt DW788 is a mid-range scroll saw but it is probably the most popular saw ever sold. I still own one that is about 13 years old and it runs fine. It does not have the same build quality as some of the more expensive saws but it is far from cheaply built. It cuts a little more aggressive than some saws but you get used to that. If you want to be a production cutter then you may do better with a high-end saw. If you are a few times a week scroller then the DeWalt is fine. Like all tools, you want to buy from a source with a good return policy. I still see out-of-the-box problems occasionally so it's good to have easy returns.
I have a 20 inch sears craftsman contractor series scrollsaw purchased in 1992 and am thinking of replacing it with a Seyco st21, what are your thoughts.
I have owned the Seyco st21 since before it was shipping and it is a fantastic saw. If you have not used any of the modern scroll saws then you are in for a treat. I know the owner of Seyco and he is excellent to do business with. Ray has been an active part of the scroll saw community for many years and knows the hobby better than anyone out there. Their support is excellent. Many scroll saw brands are having shipping delays right now because of the pandemic. You may have to wait a little for delivery but it is worth the wait in my opinion.
very good. the next improvement may be add a motor driver to turn clockwise 2 min then turn to counter clockwise 2 min. automatically. because that time its looks better. i want to make this movement with two spring that one attached to front, the other attached to back. when turn bay hand (firt movement to set springs) firs spring release and the other set (gain kinetic energy) . after release the hand two spring work different directions and vica versa. i know its difficult to explain it with words. its theory . i will try it. think like "pull and relase" toy cars. thank you.
