  • These X100 era Jaguar XK models are among the most desirable used bargains on the market here in the UK, and few offer better bang for buck value than the 400 horsepower 4.2 models, with updated engines and better reliability.
But how do they compare to the equally beloved aluminium bodied X150 shape XKR's, and can these modern day classics still cut it in terms of driving dynamics? Let's head out on the road to find out...

Having owned my X100 since 1999, I thought about changing to a X150 about 15 years ago and I am glad I kept it. For me it is not getting old and with its shape it absolutely stands out of the mass today, I would say much more than the X150 (or the F-Type) does, but that is in the eye of the beholder. As there were never many here in Switzerland, nowadays you don’t see them any more and it turns heads as people have no clue what car that is. It is definitively not a sports car that is for sure, but a great GT.
I have it refreshed right now and I am counting the days, when I get it back.

F-types are overhyped crap in my opinion.
A mate with a methaned (Diesel) X type wasted a brand new one

I drive a X100 (xkr 4.0, 2001) for six years now and use it as my everyday-car. I love it so much, turn my head myself when I parked it. I am also 6.3ft and i never had any problems with my length. My seat isn't even in the most backward position. Maybe because my car is LHD?? Nevertheless, I'm starting to get used of the looks of the X150, love it also, and i think someday, one of them will be mine ;-) The more modern features such as bluetooth, you can't do without it nowadays. Thnx for all of your great vids!

I got a 2003XK8 convertible we’re just over 75,000 miles I did replace the upper shock bushings in the front not that difficult but was time-consuming. I love the car it’s fun it does not ride the best but it is very comfortable. It is a grand tour or a hint of sports.

I just prefer the look of the X100 - it's a stunning looking car in my eyes.

Another great jag review. It's a very pretty car and it's definitely a bargain GT car. Say where's that lovely village that you drive through?

Fantastic video. I, like you, have owned both the XK8 and the XK. I like the XK very very much but I loved the XK8. I know that sounds silly but the sheet metal and body work of the XK8 moves me a bit more than its newer brother, the XK.
Since I think that the 4.2 engine is so much better than its predecessor I think that an XK8 from 2005 or 2006 would be the sweet spot for me. By that time all of the bugs had been ironed out and the 8 was probably in its best incarnation.
For me Jaguar is all about curves and burled walnut. And I’m not even one of the “pipe and slippers“ crowd. The more they make the body work look more angular with louvers and air ducts the more they detract from the original Jaguar mystique. Give me a 4.2 XK8 from 2004 to 2006 in BRG with special yellow accents to harken back to the C-type racers and I will be a very happy gent.

@@thompintello I've owned an '02 XK8 and now have a 2013 XK-R. One point - the 20 inch wheels on the '13 model are not as smooth on uneven roads. The '02 copes with the bumps better and having more rubber makes it that bit "comfier." Both are fantastic cars and this review is excellent.

Having owned both the X150 and X100 and used them properly with proper mileage. The X150 is just way more reliable. If you don't really want to take the X100 far from home and always want to be tinkering with things, then perhaps the right car for you.

Speaking to Chris at Swallows he says that the 4.2 X150 was the sweet spot. He didn't have very much good to say about either the X100 or the 5.0ltr X150. He was speaking from a "what he sees come into swallows with problems" perspective.

It also bears factoring in that a much higher percentage of X100 owners tend to work on their cars themselves compared to X150 owners, which skews the amount taken to garages. Quite a few owners have spoken along those lines even in my own comment sections, especially if you check past reviews on the main channel

@BEARDS 'n CARS good point. If anyone is interested Swallows have taken on consignment about 4 X100 XKR 4.2s which they're prepping for sale. These were customer cars and Swallows maintained.

The X100 has a mild steel body and will rust away to nothing. The X150 of course is all aluminium and although it can "bubble" under the paint, it won't rot through a panel.
The X150 will be THE classic in the future.
