      They’re all great 👍 The most trouble free are the 2003+ years with the updated engine and transmission (2003-2006). You can also go with the Supercharged model if you’re looking for something truly special 🙌

    Spot on! It’s worth noting that the engine deficiencies you mention, e.g., timing chain tensioners and guides, water pump housing, etc., were corrected with the intro of the 4.2 engine in 2003. I’ve done all of those upgrades on my 2000 XK8. Changed trans fluid and no issues with it so far.

      @@HernanSpeed I should also mention I started changing coils one at a time and realised only way to get rid of constant “restricted performance” messages was to change all at once, as you pointed out. Also, anti-knock and O2 sensors will likely need to be changed😊

    Have owned a black 2005 XKR coupe for 10 years, and just added a Crystal Red 2008 Corvette coupe. The XKR is a sophisticated yet stunning brunette with an English accent, in a strapless black cocktail dress, pearl necklace, and high heels, while the Vette is a barefooted strawberry blonde, wearing cut-off jeans, a wet T-shirt, and with legs that go all the way. I am in love with them both.

    I did my research & bought the 4.2 litre motor in a black 04' coupe - with low mileage & no rust.

    I've had two XK8s (the one I have now is almost at 200,000 miles), and I feel like I need to add a few notes. Everything Hernan says in this video is 100% accurate, and these can absolutely be used as daily drivers. However, living in rural Pennsylvania has added one minor wrinkle for me: a LOT of parts can't just be had at the local Advance Auto and need to be ordered. They're not expensive. They're not hard to find on line. But if you're living somewhere rural, you do need to be prepared to wait a day or two for shipping. There is one other part besides the bushings that my car eats: the coolant storage tank. This is probably because it's plastic and it gets COLD here. In a warmer area, this may not be an issue. Again, the part isn't hard to get, isn't exorbitantly priced, and it's not hard to replace. Jaguar did an absolutely amazing job making these cars easy to work on. The car is absolutely reliable provided you perform normal, reasonable maintenance and you factor in normal replacement schedules for things like water pumps, alternators, etc.
    I have driven mine in the snow. I don't recommend this, but for being a rear-wheel drive GT car, I can't complain about how it handled. This is the only time I have found this car to be less than completely sure-footed.
    This car is incredibly poised and handles beautifully (especially with fresh suspension bushings), and it is QUIET inside - even the convertible if the top is up - which means on a deserted stretch of highway you can easily find yourself accidentally on the fun side of 100 mph if you are not paying attention. Driving feel simply doesn't change much between 70 and 100. The exhaust note is authoritative but it does not scream. Personally I like blowing past someone in a car that sounds like it is making absolutely no effort. But, if you are looking for a loud, shouty car, this isn't it (the XKR may be different).
    In buying one, I absolutely recommend the later cars with the 4.2L engine. Pretty much all of the hiccups from the early models were fixed.

    I love that people think these cars are still junk (especially after Tata Motors took them over in 2007), which makes them depreciate a ton which in turn has allowed me to own a couple of nearly $100k cars for penny's on the dollar. My first Jaguar was a 2010 XK and now I own a 2015 XKR, they're the most beautiful head turning reliable cars that I've had out of over 80 or so! I've had a plethora of high-end cars that are usually gone in a year or so because I get bored, had the first XK roughly 3yrs and going on 5yrs for the XKR. My 2015 has had both the upper and lower pulley changed along with a tune and it's pushing nearly 650BBHP (up from the already hefty stock 510hp undersized upper and lower pulley), which allows this old grey haired grandpa to whoop up on a few of these kids, lol
    PS; And it's a Daily Driver!

    Aloha ! I am in California and I own 2001 jaguar VDP, in my humble opinion it’s a most magnificent car ever been built, it’s my weekend driver only, I got 120,000 miles on it, approximately 10,000 miles ago I had to rebuild the transmission for a first time, ($3100), it cost me approximately $300 a year to maintain, but it’s worth every penny, constantly getting envious looks, people asking me if I would sell it, people giving me compliments, it, just magnificent. The only problem I’m having periodically, don’t have a clue what is it mean but it says:(Evap) but my mechanic tell me just to reset the check engine or ignore it

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  8 місяців тому

      Ahh yesss, the Vanden Plas! The long wheelbase on the XJ8’s really do it for me, it totally makes the car! 🚀🚀
      I wouldn’t worry too much about the (Evap), it’s probably just a small air leak. If it gets really bad and the limp mode ‘Restricted Performance’ is activated, then you know it’s time to track the issue down. Otherwise, just enjoy the car and take good care of it!! 👊👊

There used to be a quadriplegic chap somewhere near Liverpool who had a 200mph car he drove just using his mouth, tongue and cheeks. I knew the guys who did the adaptations. His car was in their building when I borrowed a wheelchair from them after mine was stolen in Germany. But that must be about 20 years ago. Any idea how I might find that out@@HernanSpeed ? Ta

      @@HernanSpeed thanks for the response. Part of why I love them so much is when I was 14 years old, I went to a Jaguar dealer with my mom to buy a used chevy they had. When we were there she sat in a brand new XK8 and we were so impressed and kind of blown away but it was never realistic, felt like the dirty poor people sitting in a new car being impressed. lol Well, since then I've been very fortunate in my life and career to have purchased lots of dream cars of mine. Thanks for the great video! A few things to add....there are added costs owning the the XKR to XK8. One being the Brembo brakes are more expensive to replace. Also the CATS suspension is more prone to break and also are more expensive to fix. With having a Supercharger....it’s something additional that will need servicing like all the vacuum hoses. Also, anything underneath the supercharger that needs replacement is very time consuming to take it off. So in turn, the XK8 is cheaper to run.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  10 місяців тому

      Yes, especially after 150k miles when parts should be refreshed. I’d say the biggest cost difference is tires, the XKR definitely goes through tires faster 💨💨

    This was really helpful. Thank you. I am in the considering phase. I love the F type - but I don’t love BLACK interiors and for some reason - I feel like Jag too a really cheap route with the f type interior wise. When you don’t want black interior all you can get are the seats - and like two other pieces of panel in a matching color. It just looks like - someone just put whiskey seats in a black interior car. The older models still did it right. Tan is fully tan. Whiskey is fully whiskey - grey etc.. but this was helpful.

    Great video thanks, how much would you average the cost for replacing the front suspension bushings? And what do you recommend replacing it with so it lasts more then a couple thousand of miles?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  7 місяців тому

      Only go with factory bushings purchased at the dealership. These are the best option and give the most miles (15k+ miles). They’re not that expensive. Budget in about $650 for parts(front only), and the labor depends on your area ($1,500 avg). If you go with any aftermarket bushings, you’ll be redoing them in no time (aftermarket units ‘look’ OEM btw).

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  11 місяців тому +2

      That’s one of my favorites with the updated bodywork! 👊💯💯
      Ford sold Jaguar to TaTa Motors in 2008, so most of the Jaguars XK150 engineering/investment was carried out under Ford’s wing. Things like the transmission were outsourced to ZF, they make transmissions for BMW, Porsche’s, Mercedes, and even Kia’s!
      Your car is the newer X150 platform with the 5.0L AJ-V8 Gen III. It’s essentially the same engine as the older 4.2L, but enlarged (parts are not interchangeable though). This 5.0L engine was also used on Supercharged Range Rovers. The transmission is the updated version of the one mentioned in this video, the ZF 6HP28. It’s an incredible transmission that takes a lot of power! 🚀🚀
      If you take care of it, you’re XKR should last you forever! 🙌🙌

    Had a 2001 XK8 coupé back in 2008/9/10. It was a beautiful moneypit. There was always something going wrong - ABS module failed, coolant reservoir leaked, tensioners needed replacing, relays always malfunctioning... I even had a differential issue which took repeated visits to the Jag garage to fix. Never had to replace any bushings though. Undoubtedly one of the automotive design greats, and better than its successor IMO, but caveat emptor!

      Congrats! 🍾 My wife loooves Jags! The best place to buy new parts is actually a Jaguar dealership, their prices are often less expensive than a local auto parts store. But their prices can vary depending on location, for the exact same part. If you need a specific part, get quotes from different dealers around the country(most do next day shipping). I think you’ll find the prices to be comparable to American/Asian cars.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      Congrats! Yes, that year has the ZF 5HP24 transmission. It’s shared with many other cars, the main issue that is as the valve body wears…it makes spikes in pressure, this can mess up the A-drum & D-drum. Some people have the valve body modified to have less pressure. If you do a search in the Jaguar X308 forums, you’ll find answers (X308 has same trans as the XK8). Not many have done the mod, is it worth it?
      I say enjoy the car! 🙌 Most people don’t have issues, just don’t abuse it.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      Yeap, it very well could be! Just one bad ignition coil will send several faulty messages to the OBD2 scanner, because a misfire causes everything to run bad. With the XK8, the coils always go bad.
      Changing coils is easier than changing spark plugs. Just remove the cover, it’s 2 bolts per coil….they just slide out. If the car is a keeper, buy all 8. If you’re going to sell, then just buy 1 coil and test as you change them up.

    Probably not so much of an issue where you live, but in the uk for example, the biggest issue with these, is rust! The lower rear quarter panels and sills rot for fun on many and its one reason for most being so ridiculously cheap to buy! £3000 or less can get a Coupe and interestingly, here, convertibles are worth quite a lot more than Coupes, generlly speaking! As for reliability, my first experience of a XK8 really wasn't good. Every single warning light was on on the dashboard as I drove it to a local Jaguar main dealer to be diagnosed! The poor thing hadn't had a good life! The last one i drove was better, but was suffering sith electrical gremlins where the central locking wouldn't always work and the immobiliser and alarm played up and it kept going off!
    Still, Id Love one! Id avoid the cheapest examples though as they are usually very rough around the edges! Spend a bit more to get a good one!

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому

      Hi from Miami! 👋🏻 Staying away from beaters is always good advice, and especially cars with rust. These XK8’s are galvanized, so if you see rust…something happened. Either it was in an accident, or it was jacked up by an improperly placed lift. Metal is metal.
      You mentioned your first XK8 wasn’t a good experience, it happens. But you also said it had lived a rough life and was full of warning lights… I wouldn’t blame the car, it was a car that wasn’t cared for.
      As I point out in this video, everyone needs to stay away from the ‘deals’. There are no deals. Find a nice one, and pay what it’s worth. You’ll have an incredible experience 🚀🚀💯💯

    Hi! Great video! Trying to decide between 2008 M6 convertible with 27k miles and a 2012 Jag xkr convertible with 51k miles. Both priced at $32k… both one owner cars with great maintenance.. what’s your opinion?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому

      Both are great driving cars, but that Jaguar takes the top spot for reliability alone…. also better driving.
      The BMW will be problematic, especially with the cooling system. The electric water pumps don’t last, and the plastic water pipes leak(common BMW issues). Expect random warning sign’s from the plastic sensors that break with age.
      The 2012 XKR uses the new X150 updated platform, it’s a very modern car except for the infotainment screen….it’s slow/laggy. There’s also no way to upgrade it because it’s integrated into everything. If you can live with it, it’s an AMAZING CAR! 🙌🙌
      I would also try to get those prices closer to the mid 20’s. If it’s a dealership and they won’t lower on the price, have them through in a solid 6-month warranty.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому

      Hi👋🏻 A hard reset is disconnecting the battery, then touching the positive/negative terminals together (no battery⚠️) for 30 seconds.
      To reset the window module in the door: 1) Close the door with the car turned on. 2) Toggle the window down(opening) and hold until you hear a click. 3) Then repeat closing the window all the way up and hold, until you hear a click. This resets the window modul.
      Only 2 things can be causing this: 1) A low battery. 2) The switch in the door handle that causes the window to drop an inch when opening. Both are relatively easy fixes.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      No more than the average car, except for the front suspension bushings (cheap, but labor isn’t). I’d say no more than $1,400 US on a nice one (no need to catch up on maintenance). The convertible tops last forever, except for a few hydraulic connections which can spring a leak once every 10 years. If you find a nice one, it will be a reliable as any Ford…just add gas ⛽️

    I saw an ad once for a company that sold high performance urethane suspension bushing kits. The ad said, "Can't find the bushings you need? We can make bushings to order for one-off or unusual suspension setups."
    Sorry, I can't remember the company name.

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      Man, I think I remember them from back in the day! I’ve tried urethane front shock mounts, they still sell them….they last even less than the originals (the ride wasn’t firmer though). I know several people are looking into custom bushings, but there doesn’t seem to be a huge market for them.

    Which valve modification part do I need, and is it easy to install or does the transmission need to be dropped?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому

      Rande, the Valve body is modified so it creates less pressure on the A-drum. Most shops will pull the transmission, it’s just easier for them.
      If you’re car is running great, I wouldn’t stress over it. Don’t abuse it, and you’ll be okay 👌. The ZF 5HP-24 transmission is common, and shared with many BMW’s (XJ8 too).

      Thanks Pal, I am replacing my 1997 XJ6 with a very nice 2000 XK8 convertible, 36,000 miles. It will be my daily driver and I want to be as proactive as possible. I am having the transmission fluid/filter/gasted flushed and replaced. What atf do you recommend? What are your thoughts about replacing the timing chain tensioners & guides with metal before any issues? BTW I live in Tampa and it is wonderful to have a convertible with great a/c!@@HernanSpeed

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      @randefriedman7307 NICE!! 🙌 Stick with the original ESSO 71141 fluid, no need to change.
      The tensions won’t give issues with 36k, most issues start popping up after 80k. If you’re setting it up as a daily driver, I’d get it done so you can forget about it.
      The XK8 convertible is a great daily driver down here, the convertibles are actually much cooler in the summer because the tops are well insulated 👌

      Take it for a test drive and check if the suspension is clunky… also for any faults in the gauge cluster (bring an OBD2 scanner to check for any fault codes too). Most importantly… do the math, painting a car properly isn’t cheap.

    Jags are FAR more reliable than Bimmers and Mercedes. I currently own an XKR, XJ8 and an XJ12. I have owned a series 1 E-type, an XJ6 and an XJS 6.0. All were reliable and faults were simple fixes. I replaced the coils on my XJ8 myself $200, the XJ12 needed the main ground cable contacts cleaned to remove galvanic corrosion, the rack bushings on my XJS 6.0 were $200 and I used poly bushings. The XJ12 can sit for 2 months and it starts the instant the key is turned. I love Jaguars, but am disgusted with the styling of the sedans (saloons) after 2009. Recently on a BAT auction two, sub 25K mile 2009 Portfolio XJ8s sold for $156,000 and $175,000.

      A gentleman is selling a 2003 XK8 100k miles. Very clean interior and decent exterior. he purchased a few upgrades for the car but lost interest and no longer wants to deal with it because he wants to shift his attention to another car (Mercedes). I would have to finish installing a new top. Top hydraulics need to be refilled, and also needs the catalytic converters as they were stolen. Good news is he has all these parts and are included in the price ($2,500). I am not sure if I should even bother to go look at it in person… what do you guys think?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому

      The restricted performance kicks in when there’s a misfire, it’s so that you won’t keep driving it.
      I would guess it’s a coil, its very common. Hook up an OBD2 scanner and get the fault codes, that will help you pinpoint the issue. Reset it by disconnecting the battery for 30 minutes, then run the scanner again (to get accurate codes). Most auto-parts have scanners, they’re easy to get 😎

      The swap wouldn’t be as easy as it sounds because of the electronics. The early XK8 transmissions are usually good for a lifetime after a rebuild, I haven’t seen anyone rebuild them twice.. Just make sure the shop rebuilding it knows the weak point, then you’ll be good to go 😎

    I'm interested in a 2001 XK8 black on black model for sale here locally that does NOT have the usual wood veneer finish on the dash but rather some kind of black (plastic?) material that I really like. Does anyone know what that option was called?

    • @HernanSpeed
      @HernanSpeed  Рік тому +1

      It’s not a factory option. When the wood fades, it starts turning milky. What a lot of people do is have it painted to get a glossy finish, it actually looks pretty good. It’s less expensive than having the entire panel re-lacquered. So basically, the wood paneling is still there under the black paint.
      Make sure the maintenance is up to date, and your going to have lots of fun! 🙌🙌
