I bought a Rolls so you don't have to | Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Review - Beards n Cars
For many car fans and people with dreams of financial success in general, few things so succinctly signal reaching 'that' level than owning your very own Rolls Royce. Well over a century of being THE name in automotive luxury for most people worldwide has to mean something right?...
Well yes and no. In some ways and with certain cars they certainly do earn their reputation for impressive engineering and exquisite motoring. But on other occasions some of their cars are nothing but abysmal. Profoundly stupid in fact. And unfortunately by far the most affordable entry virtually worldwide into RR ownership (for a reason) is a prime example of the latter - the Silver Shadow.
Iconic design, lovely classic interior, an overall feeling of sturdy fit and finish and an adequately complicated looking engine bay to make it seem that the car must be very clever indeed - certainly for its time.
The reality is though, for every good decision on these cars, 3 absolutely dumb ones crop up as well. And I for one should certainly know - I own one. A 1973 Silver Shadow Mk1 in particular. So on this occasion we are doing something a bit different for a Beards 'n Cars review. I'm focusing in on why you SHOULDN'T buy a Silver Shadow, unless your budget, requirements and above all expectations are very specifically prepared for what living with a motorcar bearing the Spirit of Ecstasy is really like...

Perfect Japanese classic for beginners? - 1978 Toyota Celica (A40) XT 2000 Review - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 7723 місяці тому
I've bought another classic! And this time its my first Japanese retro ride in the form of a 1978 Toyota Celica XT2000 Liftback from the RA40 era, complete with a Japan-spec 18R-U 2.0 litre motor, 3 speed auto transmission, and seems to be one of only 3 or so on the road here in the UK! As some will know from the channel already, I've never been particularly into Celica's, but after spotting a ...
Does the BMW E30 actually live up to the hype? - 1989 BMW 320i Review - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 13 тис.6 місяців тому
Few German performance cars are quite as hyped these days as the E30 generation BMW 3 Series, but with that hype comes not only the likely chance of prices spiralling upward for mostly nostalgic reasons, as can be seen with the vastly overinflated JDM market, but also the risk of these cars not living up to the hype when it comes to actually owning and driving them... Naturally then I jumped at...
The best budget car in South Africa? - Toyota Starlet Xs - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 8 тис.7 місяців тому
While visiting South Africa again recently, we of course rented another car for the week, and this time around it was one of what is possibly the best (some may even say THE best) affordable daily runabouts in the sub R300,000 segment, especially in its R226,000 entry level form even when brand new - the facelift shape Toyota Starlet. The one which we spent our week in Durban with in particular...
'Car of The Year' 2023 Awards | Beards 'n Cars Top 10 Best Cars of The Year

With another year of Beards n Cars car reviews wrapping up, its time to crown my 2023 Car of The Year, as well as the 9 best other cars which really stood out to me during the year. From classic Lincoln's and Ford's to Aston's beautiful Rapide, and from the massive Cadillac Escalade ESV to the tiny Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, it was a year which saw fewer cars featured than usual due to how busy I...
Why this little jellybean is my 'Car of The Year' 2023 - Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2 - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 2,6 тис.10 місяців тому
The Daihatsu Sirion isn't exactly synonymous with most people's idea of a performance car, but as any who know my taste in super obscure fast cars in the sphere of Gran Turismo will know - I legitimately love the Daihatsu Storia X4. A rally-ready monster which absolutely dominated the sub 1000 cc class in Japanese rally events. This incarnation is a 2003 Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, and although no...

The beautiful Rapide has consistently been my favourite Aston Martin model for years now, and I have of course previously reviewed the more powerful 'Rapide S' version in a previous episode of Beards 'n Cars. So now that I have finally gotten my hands on my absolute favourite version of it - the original 470 bhp 'base model' in its purest and most elegant form - does it live up to my hopes? And...
Cadillac Escalade ESV - Why I bought a Mammoth Yank SUV as my new daily driver - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 528Рік тому
The Cadillac Escalade is of course America's premiere luxury SUV, the Stateside equivalent of a Range Rover if you will. And one of the relatively few 4x4s of the time which can genuinely rival a Hummer for sheer size - and far outclass it for seats and practicality. But with its massive physical proportions, large L92 6.2 litre Vortec V8 engine, potentially excessive fuel usage by UK standards...
The BEST & WORST things about owning a VW GOLF R32 | Volkswagen VR6 Owners Experience

Owning a Volkswagen Golf R32 is a tempting proposition, from its highly practical Mk5 Golf platform, to the lovely 3.2 V6 motor shared with the Audi TT, to its AWD and excellent handling, and all for surprisingly affordable prices compared to other hot hatches with similar sized engines... The BEST & WORST things about owning a BENTLEY CONTINENTAL | Flying Spur Owners Experience

The Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur are truly magnificent cars, and given their remarkably affordable used prices in many cases - highly tempting ones too. But as the saying goes ''There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Bentley.'' With tons of engineering, high specialist labour costs, and frames packed with wiring and technology, they can be a nightmare when they go wrong. But wit...
The BEST & WORST things about owning a MASERATI QUATTROPORTE | 3 Time Owners Experience
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
The Maserati Quattroporte is a stunningly tempting car on the used market, primarily because unlike its two natural rivals - the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide - it is actually remarkably affordable, with the majority of used examples for sale in the UK coming in at well under the £20k mark - with some examples even offered at half of that amount... At the same time there are huge amo...
Which Maserati Should You Buy | GranTurismo vs Quattroporte Comparison | Rivals Showdown
Переглядів 543Рік тому
The prospect of owning a Maserati is simultaneously very appealing, and for many very worrying. And both sides make sense: On the one hand you have stunning looks, beautiful sounds, and a more affordable entry point to a Ferrari-esque experience. On the other, you have the pitfalls of complex Italian electrical systems, fiddly gearboxes and niche repair parts. For those who do decide to jump in...
RAM 1500 5.7 HEMI - Genuinely better than the Viper engined Ram SRT-10?! - Beards n Cars
Переглядів 286Рік тому
As covered in my review of the Viper-engined Dodge Ram SRT-10, my hopes for that potentially beastly truck were definitely dampened once I drove it. In particular its RWD-only platform and odd choice of transmission in the case of the Quad Cab version which I drove felt ill suited at best to such an exotic concept. So when this updated 2016 shape Ram 1500 HEMI Quad Cab came up for sale at Affor...

Of course, there is nothing more nerve-wrecking than a badly maintained (trashy) Silver Shadow, so I agree with you in this point. I drive a Shadow since 2012 - and never had problems with the rat trap (no leaks, no brake problems etc), just to mention your example. The three "failures to proceed" in those twelve years were caused entirely by my own faults ( bad soldering / old petrol / not on starter solenoid not fastened properly) .- that's it. I am sorry to say that the Shadow (at least) is not constructed to be converted into a Rallye car.

Brilliant and enjoyed this refreshingly truthfully detailed unbiased review and very well done! I purchased my 55 in 2010 with 27k being just 5 years old with 4 previous owners ! I was somewhat hesitant in the purchase however being a main dealer Mercedes of Bath I went ahead and with confidence. After 15 years of ownership with 41k I’ve had many criticisms of the “Hairdressers car” comment, generally these comments come from someone who’s never driven one of couldn’t afford one. I have been tempted to sell the car but never had the guts as know I will regret it. My brother has a TVR but he never uses it for power but just sound. Items attended to in 15 years of ownership. 1 x Radiator Fan replacement 2 x rear tyres 1 x window washer pump 2 x Rocker Cover Gaskets. Roof mechanism micro switches required a drop of WD40 that I did myself, most comments were that it will be a very expensive repair job. Always do your own research!! All in all it’s been a very affordable car to run, I drive it only when I want to and that’s when it’s dry. I have kept mine as factory had the wheels refurbished and doors re sprayed as the leading edge had chipped from previous owners that I didn’t spot when buying. The car is in fantastic condition and garaged. I Still enjoy the driving just as must as I did in 2010. As the R171 55 is a less common sight these days it now is a talking point with appreciation.

I got mine in December 2018 and I'm looking forward to some more years of fun with the Jaguar I-PACE. Ian Callum designed it and the drive train called eDrive was developed by Magnum Steyr in Graz, Austria where the car is manufactured. This company is working on the next generation of this EV platform and will most likely also build the next generation EV's for Jaguar.

Bought a 2015 MSport 640D recently. Agree its a brilliant car - huge amount of car for the money. Though the 60mpg you talk about is never going to happen. I'm getting 42mpg , still great for a 3 lite 6 cylinder beast! I'm 6'4" tall so zero leg room in the rear seat behind me. One thing I've noticed is it's an insanely long car..almost 5 metres, so it is pretty much as long as a UK car parking bay, be prepared to stick out a bit! The sound in Sports mode is great. I was pleasantly surprised by the ride quality on 20inch wheels...ditch the RFs tyres btw. Road tax is now £210.

One of the best open and honest reviews I have seen on this car. I absolutely love the R171 SLK55, and after having my previous 07 R171 SLK55 totaled in a head-on collision, I'm having a hard time finding another car that is anywhere near comparable to what this offers. More than likely I will get into another one. Just no comparison to anything else out there! - 2+2 with hardtop convertible - lightweight & physically small - EXCELLENT and super reliable + easy to work on M113 V8 - Great MPG for all that power potential under the hood - The list goes on....

  • @roberttaylor5995
    @roberttaylor5995 Місяць тому

Amazing design design on the R171, true enough. I have the smaller engined SLK R171 in a super charged non AMG derivative, and it does me just fine. With top end around 150MPH and 0-60MPH in under 7 secs. Yes, I know, these are still fast cars. It handles adequately and is really quick enough! BUT the the 55AMG is the penultimate in my book for a cost effective demi super car experience! I have considered a Boxster S or Cayman. However the 55AMG and the 'apparent' practical running costs might be a future option - as the 'extra' vehicle for me. There's other vehicular responsibilities to family relatives needing MY additional Audi 'Q' SVU at the moment. SO, it is a case of:- if / when I decide to graduate from my beloved (standard) R171 SLK. This ultra reliable & economical SLK, I have had for many years, what a car it is. Thought I would share before I make the leap to a retro 55AMG or Boxster / Cayman. This is a dilemma indeed, I have had for a few months now. . . Either a Porsche or another Merc SLK (as I have had 6 'contigual' Merc cars over the past 25 years.) No better than the devil you know, one might say? ? ? A battle of the Germans within my head! Please know I've worked very hard in life to earn my guilty pleasures over the past 30 years! Any first hand Porsche 'experiental' info would be much appreciated. Many thanks. . . Dr. Rob.

I had a DB9 2005 for 5 years, loved it. But now I have a Rapide 2011 and like it better. Better ground clearance, bit more driver space and rear seats that are useful though a tight fit. Just enough to pick friends for dinner and short day trips. It is a gorgeous car that people love. Overall performance is about the same as a DB9. Aston only built 4979 Rapides but it shares so many parts with the DB9 that parts will not be an issue. I agree the Rapide is a fantastic car at a good price point currently. I think as the years go by it will hold a fair value and be somewhat collectible.

I'm Aussie, and yes, the second generation Toyota Celica liftback was popular. In fact, though my budget in 1978 only stretched to a Toyota Corolla coupe (which also was pillarless), I would have loved to have a Celica liftback. My Corolla coupe was only a 1.2 litre. I would also have liked a Corolla liftback, but they were hard to get. The Toyota T-18 would have been good too (1.8 litre). Those would be very rare these days.

The car plays in a totally different league compared the 4 Porte or the ugly duckling Porsche Panamera. At least the Maserati gives you emotions as well but not on that leve as this Aston. The Aston is built as solid as a tank. The huge sills and the way the doors open... the frameless side windows and the absense of wind noise.... The used materials and the attention to detail make it so much different and by far more individual especially compared to the mass production and low emotion Panamera. The V12 engine is highly emotional and it is very quick. The sound is breathtaking. In S mode it stretches it´s muscles. Reasonable driving on long distances make you wonder that there is a 6.0 V12 under the bonnet. The latest "S" models have the ZF 8 speed auto box which is simply superb. Ultra smooth in automatic mode. At 100mph it only revs at about 1.800rpm!!! The Bang & Olufsen sound system plays in it´s own world. By far the best sound system I ever had in a car. This system should be fitted to all cars with shitty sounding engines (more than 95% nowadays!). In a V12 Aston you never can decide wether to listen to the engine sound or the music.... one of these luxury problems...
