Even if a miracle occurred, Konami would just hand the work to a third party to butcher it with redone bad voice acting and being a glitchy unplayable mess like the Silent Hill 2/3 Remastered.
LOVED that game. I worked at the Wherehouse music store back in 1995 (they sold video games then), and that game was in our bargain bin at $14.99! I kept it in a box in great condition and sold it a few years ago. Surprised the hell out of me that it sold on eBay for more than $200! Great game, but I wouldn't pay $200 for it. I found the ROM for it and have since played it via emulator.
+Jak Mar Honestly, you're probably better of using the Kega Fusion genesis/Sega CD emulator for it unless you manage to get a copy for dirt cheap (not likely) For me, it was literally the only way I can even play it. And boy I'm glad I did. It's my favorite game by Kojima, even beating out MGS.
+witchhunt301 Well if your interested in a copy of the game you have the system to play it so using the emulator is just if you want to play it on your computer, or if you don't want to use a CD-r.
***** yeah I am just making the case for if your in the market to buy the game I would assume one would have it otherwise your going emulate it and than why would you really want to run it from the original and extremely expensive CD. Either way the only reason to pay for the CD is to say hey I got this game that is worth about as much if not more than a modern console.
in my honest opinion no game is worth $500. especially a retro game thats not as long as games of today. Im sure Snatcher is an awesome game but i doubt at the $500 price tag anybody would be getting their moneys worth through replay value. especially today with the ability to emulate games for free.
True, I don't know what happened to the used game market, but everything cost a fortune now. I recall buying Keio flying squadron for $150 a few years ago and now people are asking $700-800 for a used copy. Seems $500+ is the norm now for boxed games that are uncommon.
Personally I believe the rise of retro gaming can be linked to the decline of modern AAA games. Lotta companies taking huge losses this year. Studios shutting down, scummy monetization practices, and almost every game now looks and feels the same. Older gamers like myself who are becoming disenfranchised with modern gaming are revisiting our youth when times were simpler. Now, that being said; I'm cool with my pi, but a lot of my generation want to experience it like we did back in the day for that true retro experience. I know if I could afford it, I'd go that route as well.
The Sega CD can read unsigned code, so if all you give a crap about is playing the game then burning it to a CD-R is the most logical route outside of emulation. Telling someone to buy it is simply telling them to buy a collector's piece rather than a game. God knows that if you buy something that costs this much, then you are going to get a ROM of it to either emulate or burn to a CD-R.
Snatcher catched me SO MUCH by surprise. I fell instatly in love with it. I've got a Wii two years ago and messed around with various console emulators. So I "booted" up Snatcher for the first time just to check it out if it's working and I could not stop playing this game. The Intro got me so bad, I played it from start to finish in a few days on new years eve. So hooked was I back then. I would never ever thought such an old game, a visual novel, could me excite so much. Great memories. I Wish there were newer ports of Snatcher and Policenauts... Regards from Europe
If I found it in the wild at a stupid low price, I would buy it. Other than that, price tags like these are precisely why I still use emulators from time to time. I'll take plastic on plastic any day, but in the cases where the original is not being reproduced in any modern form and is far out of the affordable range, I think it's totally acceptable.
I don't think it's worth that much. Don't get me wrong it's an awesome game, but that is too costly. Same thing for Panzer Dragoon Saga. Great games, but not worth such a gigantic sum of money to play them. I guess if you are trying to collect a complete library of Sega CD, or Saturn games you have no choice, but just to play the individual games isn't worth it in my opinion.
No you're insinuating you'd rather have a copy of snatcher than something to sit on in you're living room. That is ridiculous, you need to widen you're horizons in life if you really think a copy of snatcher is that important
I was lucky to find SNATCHER at a Wherehouse music/video store when it first came out. I did not know at first how scarce it was until sometime later. Still have it to this day and chances are VERY slim I will sell it... also lets not forget about the AWESOME MUSIC.... was lucky enough to also get SNATCHER ZOOM TRACKS - basically it is a highlight of the best tracks so it is missing some but still very worth having also. Also of note - not sure if it truly adds to the value of this awesome game - but it is as far as I know the only Sega CD that has a candy cane spine label unlike the other Sega CD packages...Love your shirt too - got mine in blue and another I need to pick up which is basically a group shot. Great video!
I remember renting Snatcher from the video store and beating it in the 5 days I had to keep it. It's my favorite game of all time for the memories I had with it on the Sega CD. It was so awesome using the light gun in some scenes. I'd never played anything like it at the time. Great game.
Hey dude, love your channel, I would love it if you made this into a series and call it "is ********* worth it" and do reviews on really expensive rare games .
Makes me really sad that this game is so expensive, because it really is that good. Played it on emulator a few times and even played the MSX version. If Konami rereleased the game with Policenauts, I'd buy it instantly. Snatcher and Panzer Dragoon Saga are the only games I would pay over $300 just to own.
Great video last week i was at retro game store and spotted Snatcher Vinyl for 49.99 sealed had to buy it and now i have to go back toet Policenaut vinyl...if its still there!
it doesn't matter how a good a game is, no one should pay these bullshit prices for a game made 20 years ago. I'd rather pay for the digital version "if it exists", and then play it on an emulator, and/ or flash cart+ console combo, such as what I'm doing with the PS-IO
Back in 2004 I bought a house and there was a box of video game stuff (along with some other junk boxes) that were never picked up in he haul away. The box had a ton of Sega Genesis games, Sega Saturn system and games, and some scattered Sega CD games. I remember Snatcher being on of them and it was in the case with manual. Sad but true story, this box never made it to my new house in Florida. My wife later told me she got rid of it.
BTW I like the new camera angle and being able to see your handheld goodies =D (I'm sure you've had them in there before but for some reason they jumped out at me this time)
Well you could either A: emulate it on anything B: for the more authentic experience buy a mega CD and burn the game, since the mega CD can read unsigned code.
I loved this game a lot. But I wouldn't buy it for the resale price.. Emulated it on my PC and have a great experience. Loved it so much I even covered the title theme on my channel. It's a shame that the game is buried by resale value.
Yes. Without question. I've been looking for a copy for years. Sure it's awesome and super cheap on the Saturn or the PC Engine version (which is much closer to the original PC-88 and MSX computer versions), but having that awesome Sega CD port in English is something incredible. This is one of only a handful of super expensive games I'm still looking forward to adding to my collection.
I own a complete mint copy on the Pal Mega CD I bought for around 100GBP 4 years ago & never regretted it. I sat down & took a whole day to play it from beginning to end. Great gaming memory. Bought it on Saturn & PC Engine too because of the great cover art.
I too had rented the game years ago when it was new, and I completed it during the rental period. I never really gave a purchase serious consideration back in the day due to the fact that it's got limited replay value. I had even come across a copy in the wild back in the mid 90's when the Playstation and Saturn were duking it out..( along with a copy of Space Adventure Cobra ) I love the game, but I don't regret passing it over.. only because that while the official disc ( and system ) is rare, the experience has been well preserved by the gaming community. There are playthrough's, Let's Plays, Rom's, etc. that have kept the game's spirt alive and accessible. How you experience it isn't as important as "IF" you experience it. If you're a collector than sure, have at it.. but for the gaming public in general... just play / watch it.
Why does everyone want it? Because They have the COLLECTOR'S SICKNESS and they are told it's great and they SNATCH it up without even Playing it!!!! I'm gonna talk about my disdain for shelf collectors soon - But I did indeed play this back in the day, beat it and LOVED it - I was such a dork, Wore a Deckard type jacket when I played, and had the justifier inside my jacket and pulled it out and the shooting sections. I was into it.
It might worth it as a collectible, but to just play it? Just emulate it and enjoy it.No reason to pay hundreds of dollars for a game on a collector who probably bought it for a few bucks years back, i mean developers wont see that money anyway. Its like, would you pay 1 million dollars just to see a painting or hundreds of dollars to buy an old vinyl just to hear a song? of course not
I picked up my copy of snatcher for around 380 to 420 range a couple of years ago and I feel really grateful I started collecting the obscure systems first because the sega cd games that have the biggest demand are well over 500 bucks. I still need to play this game myself, but I hope people can look past that this game should never be classified as a status symbol. I don't even have my copy wrapped in a plastic protective case. It was a game that was far ahead of its time and really introduced us to anime style digital novels even though this has point and click and light gun elements to it as well. Personally, I do think the game is worth it and its worth saving money for it as long as you have every intention of playing it.
It's easily one of my top 10 games , great game great soundtrack. So many awesome memories playing it with my friend . Still have my original pal copy and even came across another one that a friend didn't want anymore. Gaming gold and would love to see a reissue some how. Thanks for sharing Jonny , great vid.
So I came back to this video and just realized I already commented on it heh, that happens sometimes with me. I finally got to Snatcher on emulator and finished it today. It truly is one of the best experiences I've had in gaming, so freaking good!! I'm a fan.
First CD offering was on the PC-Engine, and that was the first finished Snatcher offering. Also that version is fully uncensored. Sega CD version is based on that with a few tweeks.
Is it worth 400 dollars? No way. Get a repro. Fantastic experience, but no one computer game is worth that much without some enormous asterisk attached
There was actually supposed to be a game with the same mechanics and feel called Blackmore's Bane. It went on kickstarter for a bit back in 2013 or 2014, but never got funded. Most backers cited concerns over a rough draft of a pre-supposed design,as there wasn't anything really concrete. This project was to be direcetd by Jeremy Blaustein, who translated the original snatcher to the sega cd back in the day, among other things. The project had a few big names attached to the development, including Jeff Lupetin, the original english voice actor for Gillian. They said they would try and do another fundraiser to gain more money, but not a peep has been heard since the campaign unfortunately. I'm hoping they will because I really enjoyed snatcher.
Nice. I've never played this but might do one day through emulation for sure. Very cool you got a copy whilst still kind of low priced. Thanks for sharing it mate ;)
I wish that you had given a shout out to my buddy Jeremy Blaustein, the localizer of Snatcher. This game wouldn't be what it is, if he hadn't done such a flawless job at localization.
I'm buying this CIB tomorrow, as well as Panzer Dragoon Saga, from a local collector. The price for both is steep, even with a deep discount. I'm still excited to be getting these!
I got Snatcher a few years ago for just over $100 for doing some favors for the local retro game store. It's definitely worth that much. I really don't think it's worth the premium it commands though. It's certainly unique and a great experience but the cost it has really comes down to two things: rarity and Kojima. I would recommend that everyone interested in retro adventure games should find another way to experience it.
I need to play it. Yeah, I think it will hold up for someone that grew up with it or someone like myself who loves and appreciates older games, but I see what you mean about younger gamers. They might call it a rip-off of something else and then just disregard it.
Actually, Snatcher got two redesigns after the PC-88 and MSX2 versions (SD Snatcher, a 1990 RPG which changes some story elements, and Snatcher CD-ROMantic for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM 2, a complete remake supervised by Kojima in 1992, which included voice acting for the cutscenes)
My favorite Sega CD game of all time! I bought a really well done reproduction copy that came with a nice case. Cost me about $20. Having an original would be awesome, but I'm not shelling out hundreds of dollars!
Snatcher is one of the games I just want to own to have it. The other game is Shadowrun on MegaCD. I want to get my hands on them first, then get a SegaCD, but I mainly want to own them.
Does anyone think that this game might go down? I feel like I'm starting to see retro games slowly get a bit cheaper, but I don't know if this will be affected.
out of all the titles Id love to see reimagined for VR, Snatcher is my personal top choice every aspect and aesthetic of that game would suit VR perfectly
I would love a remake of this game! With a cel-shaded 3D anime art style, more interactive elements, playable SDatcher, etc. It would be one of the best remakes of all time!
There are plenty of games that have seen re-releases or ports on other systems that did not drive the value of the original product down. Yet you're correct that there are certain games that have dropped back down in price because of digital re-releases. Games like Earthbound and Wild Guns are STILL pricey, yet can be played on the Wii VC for under $20. John (Gamester81) mentioned about Collectorvision possibly bringing this game back out on the Sega Dreamcast, which I am eagerly hoping actually comes to fruition. I just want to play the damn thing on a physical console, that's all. 3DS version would also be great!
You reminded me of wanting to buy metroid prime trilogy for my Wii u . Thankfully nintendo made it accessible on the eshop. The Wii disk copy was so ridiculously expensive to buy.
Oh don't even ask Konami now to make a remake. We'll end up with a Snatcher pachinko machine.
Too true

What is the music that always plays in the back of these videos...reminds me of that epic saxophone guy music?
+SXGi1b0 Snatcher theme!
I got Snatcher a few years ago for just over $100 for doing some favors for the local retro game store. It's definitely worth that much. I really don't think it's worth the premium it commands though. It's certainly unique and a great experience but the cost it has really comes down to two things: rarity and Kojima. I would recommend that everyone interested in retro adventure games should find another way to experience it.
this is one of those on my bucket list. good vid thanks for posting
It’ll be on the Turbo Mini but only in Japanese - will there be a translation code?
Playing thru the ROM now in 2024!
Johny says the game holds up, but I recall him saying the opposite, both on the show and on AGG podcast a few years ago.
+Adam Wilson It is older but classic! Would kids like it now? probably not...It is a lot of nostalgia for me :)
I need to play it. Yeah, I think it will hold up for someone that grew up with it or someone like myself who loves and appreciates older games, but I see what you mean about younger gamers. They might call it a rip-off of something else and then just disregard it.
You can always burn it you know...
Johnny have you played read only memories yet? It's an incredible indie point n click that seems very inspired by this game.
I started playing it on my PC (emulated). I'm not far into it, but so far, so good, I'm enjoying it.
And here we are watching this in 2022…and now it’s $1200
There are loads of point and click games like broken sword and clock tower, what makes this game so special.
What a coincedence. playing the game while watching.
It's so damn hard to find a working Sega CD here in Europe, let alone a copy of Snatcher.
I feel so lucky now getting this when it first came out
i don't know why some bit from the game screenshot remind me of ghost in the shell for some reason?
My favorite Sega CD game of all time! I bought a really well done reproduction copy that came with a nice case. Cost me about $20. Having an original would be awesome, but I'm not shelling out hundreds of dollars!
I remembered buying this game at Kay bee toy store brand new for about $12 and still have it :D
Easily in my top 3 of all time
A port of Snatcher and Policenauts on 3ds would absolutely make my life!!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I have Policenaughts on my Vita which I picked up cheap on the JP PSN but I don't believe Snatcher is on there.
just done a 4 mile walk listening to lords of thunder well cool
Hey can u do a video about the crazy stuff you and rob man did back in the day? Like crazy drinking adventure stories and whatnot that would be cool
Snatcher is one of the games I just want to own to have it.
The other game is Shadowrun on MegaCD.
I want to get my hands on them first, then get a SegaCD, but I mainly want to own them.
+Zeithri If you just want to own it go for the japanese PC Engine or the Sega Saturn version. They are pretty cheap on ebay.
*****
The PC Engine version would be sweet.
Does anyone think that this game might go down? I feel like I'm starting to see retro games slowly get a bit cheaper, but I don't know if this will be affected.
Man to have a physical copy of this. I probably never will. I am with you on the 3ds, wish they would port it over.
I bought this game at KayBee Toys when they were clearing out their Sega CD games 3 for $10.00. Played through it a couple of times. Good game.
out of all the titles Id love to see reimagined for VR, Snatcher is my personal top choice every aspect and aesthetic of that game would suit VR perfectly
Yeah I'll have to be emulating that one, unfortunately... I really want to play it though! Between you and AlphaOmegaSin you guys got me jonesin o_O
This looks a lot like the SNES remake of "Famicom Tantei Club II".
There's a fan translation of it out there, check it out.
Look how expensive it is now. I’m glad I got it when it was $550 as it is over $1000 now and this is summer when prices are down. Great game
I would love a remake of this game! With a cel-shaded 3D anime art style, more interactive elements, playable SDatcher, etc. It would be one of the best remakes of all time!
Got it 😎👌🫵
beat this last Xmas now ill play it again 2019
There are plenty of games that have seen re-releases or ports on other systems that did not drive the value of the original product down. Yet you're correct that there are certain games that have dropped back down in price because of digital re-releases. Games like Earthbound and Wild Guns are STILL pricey, yet can be played on the Wii VC for under $20. John (Gamester81) mentioned about Collectorvision possibly bringing this game back out on the Sega Dreamcast, which I am eagerly hoping actually comes to fruition. I just want to play the damn thing on a physical console, that's all. 3DS version would also be great!
I just picked up a disc only copy for $300 from eBay. The back was a lil scratched up, but it plays fine.
You reminded me of wanting to buy metroid prime trilogy for my Wii u . Thankfully nintendo made it accessible on the eshop. The Wii disk copy was so ridiculously expensive to buy.
I bought a boot leg version it's amazing. But no way would I pay 150 quid
