I have a demo disc of Keio flying squadron (which came with a Brittish magazine at the time) and if you finish he first level, you get a thanks for playing message and the demo ends. However, when you use a level select code and start at level 2, you can play the entire game, videos and all! And Snatcher is my favorite game of all time! It was indeed something completely different at the time and i still play it every 2 years or so (even though i already know the story inside/out). When you realise this game is from the mind of Hideo Kojima, you know what to expect! (Such as a 40+ minute ending cutscene). Absolutely amazing!
@ I agree. Both systems are actually terrible even at the time I didn't want one and still only got one after getting a Saturn a couple years ago but maybe it's to blame on Sega itself? Dunno but if you have fun with it that's all that matters. Got final fight and terminator on Sega CD and that's it and it's a blast but I know younger me would not be able to realize how fun a few games are compared to alot. Granted it's two of the best games on Sega CD but how many of the games on Sega CD or 32x on average are actually fun? 32x has like 30 games or somethin like that and the CD has not many either so it's really a challenge.
The limited library of the Sega CD and 32X prevent them from being great consoles unfortunately. Wasted potential though, since I'm sure they would have developed a lot of great games for them if they stayed around longer.
It wasn't just Sega, lots of third party developers in general also did lazy ports from the Megadrive/Genesis with an extra level and some new music attached instead of doing completely new titles that really made use of the CD's space. FMV was this really big hype in the 90s until the developers/publishers realized that it would never really replace "standard" games (games that play like games and not just making the right choice at the same time, ingame cutscenes that don't involve poor to average actors). People in general didn't want to watch an interactive video on their consoles. Only a handful of such titles were really good and they usually used FMV as cutscenes between normal gameplay.
@Hybrid Eye78 Glad I'm not the only one to think that Kalinske actually did worse for Sega than better. He tried way too hard to compete with Nintendo instead of just taking advantage of what Sega was good at, which was really good hardware with some out of the box games. Sonic was a fantastic game, don't get me wrong, but Sega was so much more than Sonic.
@Hybrid Eye78 Yep. Kalinske had no inclination of what Sega was good at, instead just pushing useless crap and more Sonic sequels that eventually got old. I only recently discovered how absolutely cool their older game library was.
Mine looks something like this. 1) Dark Wizard 2) Lunar TSS 3) Lunar EB 4) Vay 5) Shining Force CD 6) Final Fight CD 7) Android Assault 8) Sonic CD 9) Silpheed 10) Robo Aleste
@@jakeholland1848 I'm not sure. I bought my copies many years ago, when they were cheap. You could always download ImgBurn and find copies online to try them out.

That's a pretty darn good list! No Silpheed though? If we're including non-exclusives, I'd add Eye of the Beholder. Pretty solid port with good CD music. I also enjoyed the upgrades Eternal Champion got on the Sega CD, and I'd give Racing Aces, Vay, and Terminator an honorable mention.
@@1georgekitchen Yeah Lunar 1 and 2 were amazing, especially during the 16-bit era. I am still annoyed they never made a true sequel (or prequel) back while the iron was hot. Side stories and remakes are nice and all, but that time and effort should have been spent making a full-on new Lunar at the beginning of the 32-bit era. Side note: We may yet see an English translation of Lunar 1 for the Saturn. Probably still a year off but there's a couple of people on the SX forums working on it.
The Sega CD version of Prince of Persia got me into that style of game, and also got me into appreciating Persian and Arabic styles of music. It was a rare example of a game that only used the CD for playing the soundtrack, but you didn't feel ripped off upon realizing it. The soundtrack was just THAT good, and made the CD version infinitely superior to the cartridge.
X you’re one of very few people I have heard that love Sonic CD as much as I do. I own it for Sega CD and PS3 and the very first time zI experienced it I was hooked. It is the best 2D Sonic of the 90’s. It’s definitely also one of the top games made for the platform. Thank you for another excellent video. See you for the next one✌🏾
@Einsatzgruppen B if you’re really considering one you may want to look at the Polymega. I have owned three Sega CD consoles including a CDX which I currently own and love. They’re up there in price and a lot of them need a little TLC to keep them going relative to their age like replacement capacitors, replacement CMOS battery (not a big deal), potential laser lens failure, etc. The advantage to the Polynega is that it is brand new hardware, region free, plays reproduction or burned discs, and also out of the box plays original PlayStation, Neo Geo CD, and Sega Saturn games. With the Sega CD the best version to buy is the model 2. Ask anyone who repairs or owns model 1 Sega CD’s and they’ll tell this “they’re unreliable.” Over the years they haven’t aged well. The CDX is great however they are at the higher end of value and therefore cost to buy. The Wondermega (Japan) and X’eye (USA) which were licensed JVC variants of the Mega CD and Sega CD are up there with the CDX due to their rarity. Definitely do some research and if you have questions feel free to respond to this. I love the Genesis and Sega CD, a subscriber and regular supporter of SLX, and a fan of videogaming. If you decide to go after any of these I mentioned to you good luck. Have a great day.
Ah, my favorite system. If I were to do a top 10 based solely on nostalgia and emotional response, I'd have to say: 10: Rise of the Dragon 9: Lethal Enforcers 8: Double Switch 7: Lords of Thunder 6: Lunar 2: EB 5: Eternal Champions: CftDS 4: Sonic CD 3: Final Fight CD 2: Snatcher 1: Lunar TSS I was lucky enough to own all of these at release, but man, I'm kicking myself for selling Snatcher way back in the day. =P
Wow, I never knew about the Terminator soundtrack being done by Tommy Tallarico! I’ve met him Years ago when I lived in Hawaii, He and Victor Lucas were filming an episode of Electric Playground In Waikiki.
It's one of the best games ever made, IMHO. It's tragic that the Sega CD didn't get the proper limit pushers and marketing to prove to the world that it was a true arcade powerhouse. And it was only $99 by 1995. SEGA should've just sold the $199 CDX (with upgraded 128KB VRAM) from 1994 on and not waste time and money on the 32X. The Saturn could've been released with some actual games at the regular launch.
Thank you for acknowledging the existence of emulators. I love hardware and I'm nostalgic for it. But sometimes I'm traveling and it's not practical for me to have a bunch of equipment with me. Pack an Xbox controller with my laptop and I'm able to okay classic games while I am killing time.
@@Walkeranz yes save states. Though it's not how the game was made, it is simply not feasible to play old games that way nowadays, though the option is still there. Guides and save states are there when you need them and they make old games really fun again. Maybe it's my reflexes going as I get older, but old games can be really hard and not always in a good way. But it did take like 7 months for me and my brother to beat zelda 1 in 1991. Such a hard game if you don't know all the secrets.
Actually just got my first CD about 4 months ago. Nephew turned me onto Snatcher, Kieo Flying Squadron, and Terminator. Been picking up what titles I can afford ever since. Wish I’d have never passed this one up in the day. Thanks for all the nostalgic content, SLX you really help to shape the kind of collector I have been the past year or so. Love the content and find myself revisiting some episodes for lists, and great entertainment. Keep up the great work brother! Knocking it out of the park seems to be a habit with you. ☺️👍🏻
Snatcher and Sega CD Terminator are probably some of the better games on the Sega CD along with the JRPGs and strategy RPGs. I want to like Sonic CD but I hate the level design. I like exploring but it feels unrewarding and the time travel part is a gimmick that is not used well.
I remember the first time I played snatcher with a friend in 95 and we were blown away by it, as you said it felt very mature, it took us a while but we finished it. I wished it had more battles with the gun but it felt like we were playing a movie in 95.
What really can't be relived and is hard to explain in words is the awe we had playing a platformer like Popful Mail and all of a sudden hearing cd quality dialogue or seeing a cut scene like something out of an anime. It was all something we hadn't experienced, even the notion of full motion video in a game.
Nice video! Snatcher's my all-time favorite game, so the Sega CD was something special to me. Loved everything Working Designs put out for it. Some of the games that defined this system for me also included Willy Beamish and Rise of the Dragon, Dark Wizard, and (weirdly) The Space Adventure. (I know it's a poor man's Snatcher, but voice acting and adventure games were my jam then.)
The Sega CD port of Lords of Thunder is also a must play. It's my favorite shmup ever and the Sega CD version has a (in my opinion) superior rendition of the heavy metal soundtrack.
I remember walking into blockbuster with my mom when I was 13 and picking up used copies of lunar silver star and dark wizard that they had for sale. I didn't know anything about them. I totally fell in love with lunar. It was pretty much my first jrpg. Dark wizard seemed to complicated to me at first but when I tried it the second time, I fell in love with it too. It's still my favorite strategy game. I also remember freaking out when I found out that they were coming out with a lunar 2. It was the first time I ever preordered a game.
It was a frickin awesome, criminally underused machine. Sega had three years on the PS1 and could've brought respectable demakes of so many of its and PS1's offerings using that machine.
We've had a ton of Genesis collections over the years but I can't think of any Sega CD collection. I would think you could fit this whole top ten list on a BD with ease and still have room for more.
I had no idea the Sega CD had 200 games. Yeah, I didn't get out much in the early 90s but I never even saw a Sega CD when I did. Hell, the only game for the system I ever say anywhere was Sonic CD.
The Sega CD was a much better system than I thought growing up. I only had a bunch of the crappy FMV games for it as a kid. I really wish I knew about the unique games out there that utilized the scaling hardware. I would have loved Soul Star, though it's hard as nails.
The LUNAR series is one of my favorite set of games of all time. Played SS and EB on Sega CD, and their PlayStation translations over and over again as a kid.
“You still don’t have a Sega (Mega) CD? What are you waiting for - Nintendo to make one?” I waited for the SNES CD for a long time. I eventually got a Genesis/Sega CD Mk. 2. Only now, 30 years later, am I actually learning to appreciate this underrated console add-on.
Final Fight CD is one of my favorite games of all time! To me it stomps the SNES and arcade versions due primarily to the music. Check it out on UA-cam if you don't have it, it's worth it. Also the Sega CD versions of Lethal Enforcers, Sewer Shark, Snatcher, Batman TAS, Sonic CD and Night Trap were really great games!
I had all but 4 of those games: Batman, terminator, Flick and soul star, but every other game on that list I loved to death. So much so that when my original Sega CD died, I went out and bought the newer model. Unfortunately someone broke into my home many years ago and stole all my systems and games. Years of collecting gone. I never got around to replacing all of them. I still hold the memories close to my heart and play the sound tracks to both Sonic CD and Keio flying Squadron regularly. (Truthfully played Keio OST the day before I saw this). Great video. Thanks for the memories
MegaDrive Flink is the same game, only without the cd audio. I enjoy Android Assault (Bari-arm), Lords of Thunder and Silpheed on the MegaCD as well. Great video, once again, thanks!
The Sega CD version looked to be smoother and better. Perhaps they had more time. SLX did a video on 32X vs. Sega CD, and I believe that the Sega CD version had more colors, too. (No 32x version)
I have Sonic CD on my XB1 and love it. Definitely one of my favorite 2D Sonic titles alongside 2 and Mania. Great video as always man (though I wasn’t quite prepared for the guy with his head twisted off in Snatcher lol).
"Sonic The Hedgehog CD" isn't exactly one of my Top 10 favorite Sonic games of all time, but I am able to respect everyone's opinions about it, especially since it is also the game to feature the debut of both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, and the digital version released for the Xbox and PlayStation actually fixes many of the problems with the original game on the Sega CD.
Your list is awesome! I loved the Sega CD. It was a really underrated add-on. My Top 10: 1) Snatcher 2) Final Fight CD 3) Sonic CD 4) Vay 5) Lunar Silver Star 6) Silpheed 7) Rise of the Dragon 8) Shining Force CD 9) Batman Returns 10) Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side
My lord…I have not seen this since the 90’s! To have a MEGA CD back then meant you were basically on a six figure income..aged 13 Psygnosis were also the team that made the awesome Blood Money and Barbarian games..with equally awesome cover art that resembled 1970’s prog rock record sleeves..
Awesome video SLX! I remember having a sega CD and it was awesome! I remember playing Jurassic park and getting lost in the cave and dieing. I never knew what to do until I grew up a little and understood that I needed an item to pass through that specific area. Good times! Great Content!
I was in love with the Sega CD when it first came out. Didn't get my own until the Model 2 was released. Traded in my Game Gear and all my games to get one. LOVED IT!
I loved my Mega CD, I definitely got a lot of value out of it in the 90s. For me Dune, Sonic CD, Batman Returns and the curveball Nova Storm got the most play. But it certainly was not short of titles to play.
Even though most consider them a meme now I actually enjoyed many of the FMV titles on my Sega CD. In particular I find myself going back and replaying Sewer Shark and Double Switch quite often now days.
Like Ive said before, the Final Fight soundtrack on SCD is on a whole other plane...man, that first level alone the opening notes just kick you the face, so rich, bassy and amazing. Killer list.
Well the original Ys team was out at Quintet so it was a new team at Falcom who made Popful Mail.... ... Actually, it's stranger than that, Popful Mail came out on PC-98 ( and 88 i think ? Falcom president was crazy about it ) and was instead a Xanadu-like sort of game. So no new team at all, it was directed by the legendary director who made Dragon Slayer one of the first J-RPG, way before Dragon Quest and.. Well.. Xanadu which is Dragon Slayer 2.) - The PC Engine CD version was actually a portage of that version and was quite faithful. - The Mega CD version was part of the Sega-Falcom relationship at the time and it was entirely remade by Sims which is... The company that ported House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast or made the Ninja Gaiden on Master System or the Shadow Dancer on Megadrive. As you can see, they were very close to Sega, more than Falcom anyway. - But Falcom actually DID a port of Popful Mail on SNES which is ANOTHER different version (didn't played it yet, don't know how different) and is said to be the weaker of all the console versions. THAT version were made by a new team. (Because, again, the Ys team quit the company to make Act Raiser, Illusion of Gaia and many more) Fascinating isn't it ?
Haganeren Hardcore Gaming 101 has a great write-up on all the versions of Popful Mail that's very worth checking out, but TL;DR: the Sega CD version is the best one. Also just gonna mention that Quintet was amazing and greatly missed.
Just one thing to mention: a lot of people complain about the dithering, you included. But it's something that was not visible back in the day because of how the screens operated. We actually saw more colors instead. A lot of games use dithering tricks for example in Sonic, to create transparencies.
This is a fantastic list dude. I had the Mega CD that my parents got me second hand around 94 and I only really ever had the games that came with the system when they bought it for me. There's more than a few in here I'd never even heard of that look great - time for a trip down emulator lane.
Good video, although my list is a little different. It is also important to mention Lunar the Silver Star, Road Avenger, Silpheed, Robo Aleste, Eye of the Beholder, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Heart of the Alien, Spider-Man vs the Kingpin, Flashback, Fatal Fury Special, Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Ah-3 thunderstrike, Eternal Champions, Dune, Urusei Yatsura, Rise of the Dragon, Dark Wizard and Mickey Mania.
I'd also add Lunar the Silver Star to the list. But aside from that, this is solid and definitely what Sega should be looking at should they ever come out with a Sega CD mini to accompany the Genesis mini. Though they're free to skip the 32X and move right onto the Saturn and Dreamcast mini.
Watermelon simply used the MegaCD as a way to have CD Audio playback using the MegaCDs audio components while playing from Cartridge. It does show how much potential could have been made. Most games on MegaCD dont take up more than the cartridge counterpart, it was just FMV / audio.. But they could have combined the two, the fast access of cartridge with a CD supporting assets like imagine if the background data was pulled from CD, but the characters were off the cart, or some weird combo like it, could have seen some amazing work being done. Oh wait, this was done with some saturn games...
@Sir AZ Lots of people cared about the color limit. Namely the majority of gamers that bought an SNES instead 🤣 Not to say the Sega CD was bad, obviously it wasn't. But it had glaring flaws and a huge buy-in to enjoy. Thankfully a good friend of mine had one, so I could just play his until I got a job of my own and was able to buy one cheap after it had been bargain binned. But by that time the 3DO outclassed it. So I went with that mostly.
Soul Star was beyond impressive and it make Star Fox look like Child's Play and the fact that it had full 3D roaming sections was beyond amazing and it really showed the power of the Sega CD and it's a shame the 32X and Jaguar CD ports where never finished and even more a shame Sega never had the developer make a Saturn port with full multiplayer!
You should try Wing Commander on the Sega CD! It's a space combat simulation game with lots of detail and features that I wash were in modern games today. The graphics may leave a little to be desired by today's standards but it's still a fun game. Tip: to land you ship at the end of the mission, you have to ask the carrier for clearance to land. That took me forever to figure out.
Agree with all of these, and also want to throw out love for Road Rash (the only version in which the music plays during the race, not just in cutscenes, GREAT soundtrack), Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside, AH-1 Thunderstrike, Vay, the Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Mickey Mania, Silpheed, and yes got to agree that the Shining Force CD deserves at least an honorable mention. Great, great system.
Since you like the Sega CD music for Final Fight, there's a way to add it to the Samples directory in MAME and play the arcade/CPS1 version with the Sega CD music. I also read it can be done with the recent re-release that had different music as well.
Love you videos man. My favorite Sega CD game was Eternal Champions. I liked the extra stages and music updated. I also loved the music from echo the dolphin on sega CD. Keep up the good work.
This is a really nice list. Several of these would make my top 10 as well. Sonic CD was my favorite of the classic 2D Sonic games. I put in so many hours on Final Fight CD. It's my favorite brawler of all time.
You're not kidding about that Terminator Sega CD OST. Tommy Tallarico went to the next level. I dont think I've ever been so blown away by a licenced video game soundtrack. I also want to say that I loved the Sega CD back in 1992-1996. It was where I first played Earthworm Jim Special Edition and Shining Force CD. Of course it was the best place to play Final Fight for decades as well. All my SNES owning friends were SOOO jealous. I really wish Sega would release an official Sega CD Mini. I just want to play Snatcher and Lunar again!
Batman Returns to me felt like the first proper driving game at home that mimicked the Sega sprite scalers, with that beautiful buttery smooth hardware scaling. Still play Final Fight CD and it's my all time favorite version.
The Sega CD is why I am a retro gamer today! I agree with your list 100% and I am proud to say I own all of the games and unlike my foolish younger self, this time I will not sell them to "upgrade" to the next system. What I bonehead I was. Keep up the great work!
Yeah I feel you. I pawned all my consoles (NES+SNES, Master+Genesis1+CD2, Gameboy, Game Gear (with TV tuner!), and all the games I had. This included a bunch of rare games also, pretty much a grip of shit. Didn't get much for them. For what? The new up and coming PlayStation. Oh and I was short $100, which my dad helped me fund. Young and stupid.
I must speak truly. I have many memories of playing Sonic CD for Win 95 mid 90's but I did not even understand the nature and purpose of the time travel. I am sure that what is seen from bonus or between zone levels is a Arrow pointing straight at what the makers of Jack Jazz Rabbit was trying to do within their own time frame. I was surpised to see what you made as you put it in the number one slot, but I too prefer platforms that do more than dash through from start to goal post as fast as possible. I LOVE what Sonic Team did with the Dynamics of game play nifty detail and colour palette splendour in Knuckles Chaotix and some times I play it for a short while and some times I head on to sit in front of it in longer takes. I like the idea that being fast is not what is most pivotal in game play in Chaotix, and I am thinking now having seen this video reminding me of features of the PC version I have played many times there seems to more great offerings layered within if I could get it for MEGA CD with the proper controllers. I have meories that the time travel mode was messy and that Emma and I tried to avoid it at times, as so put forth some of the story in how the game is in its' structure it seems that I NEVER understood what a pivotal part the time travel plays in fully realising the concept of the game and how it relies also on having patience, not just maximum velocity! thanks for sharing and I must say, so fully achieved something special in the notion of how you expressed that of which titles were your PERSONAL faves. Sonic CD standing there as the King of The Hill, now coming from you I was a tad surprised. I knew that you regarded highly the quality outing of Terminator and it was in fact a video in the first run of your show that got me interested in getting a MEGA CD MACHINE, yepp
Never having owned a Mega/Sega CD I am so happy I at least got to experience Snatcher and Sonic CD. After finishing Keio Flying Squadron 2 I'd love to play the original game.
Excellent video thanks. I loved my Japanese sega CD and owned it more or less from day one. It took an age for the decent titles to appear but when they did the machine became essential.
I will always remember Road Avenger. I dont know why but that to me defined Sega CD. Not even a super great game. But i remeber being blown away at seing it in the gamestore as a kid.
I'm a huge Sonic Fan. I own every single Sonic game and I've been collecting since I was 7. Yet, until a few days ago, I beat Sonic CD for the FIRST TIME. I'm pretty sure I would've liked it more had I played it when I was a kid.
I think its works that way for every game. Not experiencing it in its original era can have an impact, because you have played so much since. It definitely matters.
I really love Eternal Champions Challenge from the Dark Side, and Earthworm Jim Special Edition. Those are two of my favorite Sega CD games, I ended up wanting the console for.
Hey man..I just want to let you know I really appreciate what you do.You always do a great job with your videos, and I almost always learn something new.Keep up the great work!
You forgot mentioning the Sonic CD 2011 remake - it featured Tails, more options for controls, a way to choose JP or US soundtracks, reworked special stages and widescreen. It also removed all the lags and glitches the original had. Otherwise, great video!
I'm a huge fan of the Sonic CD PC port. You're probably aware of this already, but just in case- Christian "Taxman" Whitehead, the main guy behind it is also the main guy behind the 2017 release of Sonic Mania. IMO Sonic Mania, along with Sonic Generations is one of the only post-16 bit era Sonic games to get the formula right. They're the only ones released post- Sonic 3 & Knuckles that I find myself going back to replay.
@@shadowpresident4203 And he also made the great Sonic 1 and 2 Mobile ports with more additions and even full online multiplayer and Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2. Sadly, those ports never appeared on consoles or PC's.
@@the757general2 Yeah, my bad, and 2011 also had some large glitches of it's own like the time it takes to time travel being incorrect or the Special Stage hitboxes.
How can I forget The Terminator... I remember owning Tommy Tallarico CD of all his music from the Terminator.... Wish I still had that CD and also Spencer Nelson's take on Sonic cd.
There was also another reason why Keio Flying Squadron didn't sell well. A gaming magazine included a demo of the game, and people discovered that the demo disc had the full game on it, just with a lockout after the first few levels. Hackers were able to remove the lockout pretty quickly, and so for anyone who subscribed to that magazine, there was no reason to buy the game.
If you enjoyed Earthworm Jim then the Special Edition on Sega CD is a must own, and is the closest we'll ever get to a definitive version of the game (now that Earthworm Jim HD lies forever in its digital-only grave). Special Edition has an extra level, extra sections in the early stages, a new weapon (homing missile) and interesting additions like a new hidden warp to skip the dreaded Tube Race. And of course, the arranged CD soundtrack is amazing. Sadly, like most good Sega CD games it'll cost you an arm and a leg these days.
I remember hearing that. Here in the US, we rarely even got demo discs for anything back then.

02- LUNAR: THE SILVER STAR
01- LUNAR: ETERNAL BLUE
Greetings from Spain :)
@@AlexvrbX +1 on Eye of the Beholder. Top 5 for me. The Lunar games are also my 1 and 2.
Probably still a year off but there's a couple of people on the SX forums working on it.
vilangel78 You forgot Rise of the Dragon which I put it along side Snatcher.
Hell yeah!!!
Yup, Sonic CD was special. It just had such a cool atmosphere thanks to its stage design and music. I absolutely loved it.
Mark Smith I am currently Let’s Playing Sonic CD again on my channel.
@Einsatzgruppen B you're welcome. Anytime! Have a great day.
Ah, my favorite system. If I were to do a top 10 based solely on nostalgia and emotional response, I'd have to say:
10: Rise of the Dragon
9: Lethal Enforcers
8: Double Switch
7: Lords of Thunder
6: Lunar 2: EB
5: Eternal Champions: CftDS
4: Sonic CD
3: Final Fight CD
2: Snatcher
1: Lunar TSS
I was lucky enough to own all of these at release, but man, I'm kicking myself for selling Snatcher way back in the day. =P
Dark Wizard. Incredible SRPG. + Best Soundtrack ever.
I have that game. I like Armer's March.
I still play that game today, totally amazing.
It was a great game agreed!
That game was incredibly deep for its time.
Wow, I never knew about the Terminator soundtrack being done by Tommy Tallarico! I’ve met him Years ago when I lived in Hawaii, He and Victor Lucas were filming an episode of Electric Playground In Waikiki.
SoulStar is one of the best shooters in history. It's criminally underrated.
I’d say The amazing Spider-Man VS Kingpin deserves a spot.
Emulation is the way. It's not about what sits on your shelf, it's about what happens on the screen and between your thumbs. And save states.
Juan Gil *The Japanese version did but the text was in Japanese too bad and it was Blade Runner* ⭐️
Batman Returns first driving level's music changed my gaming life forever.
I have to get into Sega CD after this episode. I missed it entirely growing up.
know that mickey mania would be #11
me too - but I found an emu+bios now I'm researching the best games. thx Sega Lord X!
Great list. Would love to see a follow up with 11 - 20
Listening to _The Terminator_ OST while doing household chores, i.e., the definition of overkill.
Kris Kross: Make My Video on Sega CD was the epitome of the early 90s.
I proudly own all four of the "Make My Video" Series. I brag about that more than I brag about owning both Lunars.
Kris Kros was peak early 90s itself. It's essentially the 80s coming down from their coke-fueled high.
With the graphics it could of supported that GI Joe arcade game maybe fix it up a little polish and go.
@@Sweetestsadist that's just sad
I had no idea the Sega CD had 200 games. Yeah, I didn't get out much in the early 90s but I never even saw a Sega CD when I did. Hell, the only game for the system I ever say anywhere was Sonic CD.
Melvin Shine man, I owned one and had no clue it had that many.
The Sega CD was a much better system than I thought growing up. I only had a bunch of the crappy FMV games for it as a kid. I really wish I knew about the unique games out there that utilized the scaling hardware. I would have loved Soul Star, though it's hard as nails.
Many people I talk to were exposed to the Sega CD mainly by FMV games. I really do feel sorry for them. They missed so many good games.
The LUNAR series is one of my favorite set of games of all time. Played SS and EB on Sega CD, and their PlayStation translations over and over again as a kid.
The Lunar games on Sega CD are amazing! I remember being blown away by EB's opening cutscene. I love collecting stuff from that series.
When discussing the Sega CD in a video, music by Spencer Nilsen is most definitely the right way to start off
“You still don’t have a Sega (Mega) CD? What are you waiting for - Nintendo to make one?”
I waited for the SNES CD for a long time. I eventually got a Genesis/Sega CD Mk. 2. Only now, 30 years later, am I actually learning to appreciate this underrated console add-on.
Thunerhawk on the Mega CD was brilliant
It was THE reason to own that system.
Brilliant game,it still staggers me that you can pick it up so cheap. Soundtrack is awesome
Facts!!!
I specifically wanted to get the Sega CD just to play the enhanced version of ECCO The Dolphin. :)
Microcosm, Thunderhawk, Terminator, Robo Aleste and Rebel Assault are also great.
Popful Mail and Keio Flying Squadron are still some of my favorites!
Oh the memories...
Any video that tells people about how awesome the Lunar series was gets a +1 from me. Really wish the series could come back.
I have Sonic CD on my XB1 and love it. Definitely one of my favorite 2D Sonic titles alongside 2 and Mania. Great video as always man (though I wasn’t quite prepared for the guy with his head twisted off in Snatcher lol).
Me too
"Sonic The Hedgehog CD" isn't exactly one of my Top 10 favorite Sonic games of all time, but I am able to respect everyone's opinions about it, especially since it is also the game to feature the debut of both Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, and the digital version released for the Xbox and PlayStation actually fixes many of the problems with the original game on the Sega CD.
*I got this on Game Cube on a compilation disc later it’s great!* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
@A Friend You got Sonic Gems Collection.
Your list is awesome! I loved the Sega CD. It was a really underrated add-on.
My Top 10:
1) Snatcher
2) Final Fight CD
3) Sonic CD
4) Vay
5) Lunar Silver Star
6) Silpheed
7) Rise of the Dragon
8) Shining Force CD
9) Batman Returns
10) Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side
I was a big fan of Rise of the Dragon, myself. Underrated for years, that one.
Great list! It's nice to see Vay get some love.
My lord…I have not seen this since the 90’s! To have a MEGA CD back then meant you were basically on a six figure income..aged 13
Psygnosis were also the team that made the awesome Blood Money and Barbarian games..with equally awesome cover art that resembled 1970’s prog rock record sleeves..
LOVED IT!
Ecco 1 and 2, Sonic CD, and Soul Feace are very nostalgic for me.
I loved my Mega CD, I definitely got a lot of value out of it in the 90s. For me Dune, Sonic CD, Batman Returns and the curveball Nova Storm got the most play. But it certainly was not short of titles to play.
Something people that didn't own it at the time fail to realize.
I love this list. I had most of these games. I remember not being able to get passed a certain part on Snatcher, matching up a face.
It's cool to know that there are still worthwhile reasons to have a Sega CD
Even though most consider them a meme now I actually enjoyed many of the FMV titles on my Sega CD. In particular I find myself going back and replaying Sewer Shark and Double Switch quite often now days.
Sewer Shark is a lot of fun
Sewer shark still has my friends talking about it to this day,a real sega cd experience that you could not find anywhere back in 93
Like Ive said before, the Final Fight soundtrack on SCD is on a whole other plane...man, that first level alone the opening notes just kick you the face, so rich, bassy and amazing.
Killer list.
While i am not into Jazz, A night in Neo Kobe City might be the best Soundtrack for a game to me.
I love tearstained eyes from that game even more
This was exactly what I needed after getting my Mega SD!
I always wanted to play Flink, such are gorgeous looking game. Even the Genesis version looks amazing
Originally an Amiga game. That version is the best.
Well.. Xanadu which is Dragon Slayer 2.)
- The PC Engine CD version was actually a portage of that version and was quite faithful.
(Because, again, the Ys team quit the company to make Act Raiser, Illusion of Gaia and many more)
Fascinating isn't it ?
Sega CD really was a powerhouse for the time. It was a sizable upgrade over base hardware.
When a dev used it, it could be a monster.
Shame it didn't get a colour bump.
@@SegaLordX Has there been any homebrew work done on the Sega CD in the last 20 years or so?
Namely the majority of gamers that bought an SNES instead 🤣
Not to say the Sega CD was bad, obviously it wasn't.
Yeah that's the first title I thought of when he talked about sprite scaling and rotation.
That'd be awesome. The Sega CD soundtrack destroys the original arcade music.
@@SegaLordX I think this is the original post. There's a bunch of stuff on Google though.

Love you videos man. My favorite Sega CD game was Eternal Champions. I liked the extra stages and music updated. I also loved the music from echo the dolphin on sega CD. Keep up the good work.
Been waiting for this one, great video, I really loved the Sega CD! It was so exciting when it came out, for a couple years there it was hot hot hot
This is a really nice list. Several of these would make my top 10 as well. Sonic CD was my favorite of the classic 2D Sonic games. I put in so many hours on Final Fight CD. It's my favorite brawler of all time.
Great list, final fight and snatcher should be on every sega CD list. I really enjoyed earthworm jim cd as well
You're not kidding about that Terminator Sega CD OST.
A Sega CD Mini has to exist. Sega would be wasting crazy success not doing one.
Fantastic video! I’d add Road Rash and Earthworm Jim. Probably a few more, but these are definitely my top games for the system
Fantastic list! Also, kudos on setting your closing speech to the title theme for Vay - my personal favorite Sega CD game of all time.
Thank you for putting this awesome list together. I would have completely missed these hidden gems otherwise.
I had no idea the Sega CD had it's own powerful sprite scaling chip - learn something new every day! Thanks for making such great videos!
Oh fuck yeah!!!
Never having owned a Mega/Sega CD I am so happy I at least got to experience Snatcher and Sonic CD. After finishing Keio Flying Squadron 2 I'd love to play the original game.
Watching a Sega X show with an actual Sega add before it. "for the mini" It's the time to be Sega.
And in between. Sega eye ball adds. If you're watching this a year from now you're missing out, or are they at the mini Saturn yet?
Haha, yup, I got them when testing playback, myself.
Excellent video thanks. I loved my Japanese sega CD and owned it more or less from day one. It took an age for the decent titles to appear but when they did the machine became essential.
Snatcher was my all time favourite game for so long ever since I first finished it in 2012.
I really love Shining Force CD too!!
That Batman game looks amazing!
If I saw it in 1993, I would've been shocked how good it looked.
Flink was a hidden gem. A wonderful game, pretty underrated. And the terminator soundtrack is sooo good
Excellent video! Really addicted to your channel lately!
I will always remember Road Avenger. I dont know why but that to me defined Sega CD. Not even a super great game. But i remeber being blown away at seing it in the gamestore as a kid.
Being a retrogamer often drawn towards games with banging soundtracks
Wolfchild is in my top 5.
@@shadowpresident4203
And he also made the great Sonic 1 and 2 Mobile ports with more additions and even full online multiplayer and Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2. Sadly, those ports never appeared on consoles or PC's.
@@marx4538 The original Sega CD version was the first Sonic game to have a save feature
@@the757general2 Yeah, my bad, and 2011 also had some large glitches of it's own like the time it takes to time travel being incorrect or the Special Stage hitboxes.
I love it when you make videos of cool Sega games I don't have because they are available on ESTY shortly after. Keep up the great work sir.
Thanks man. Use any means necessary to play these old games. Most will never, ever see a reissue of any kind.
How can I forget The Terminator... I remember owning Tommy Tallarico CD of all his music from the Terminator.... Wish I still had that CD and also Spencer Nelson's take on Sonic cd.
The fact that Spider-Man vs Kingpin isn’t on the list is a crime. The story, gameplay, video and soundtrack all are awesome
The opening cinematic on Lunar 2 blows any other 16bit opening out of the water. And some 32bit ones as well.
FMV games seemed dam impressive as a kid in the late 80s early 90s.
I just got a Mega SD myself. Popful Mail was the first thing I played (replayed) through after setting the thing up.
I just picked up a free sega CDX a co worker gave me it today im so happy to have it. Hope he finds his old games too :) watching your video :)
I love the Sega CD, it was cutting edge at the time. As it was, we still use CD based games today!
