    During the early 90s, I worked on several of the PC Engine games to localize them into English - a couple of the Bonk games, two sports games and Dungeon Master III: Theron's Quest. Excellent machine in its day.

    When I first came to Japan one of the first things I did was buy a PC Engine Duo-R. Five years and hundreds of games later and I'm still hooked on it and always finding new and interesting titles floating around out there.

      PCE was my childhood memory, my 2nd console ever owned (My 1st was Famicom and its disk system). Like 2 years after I owned my PCE, I further bought the CD Rom2 "briefcase" and that amazing add on opened up my dream CD games library: YS 1&2, Fighting Street, Cobra, Wonder Boy, Far East of Eden etc. The CD quality music together with the vivid graphics made me hardly believed it's a 8-bit gaming console omg...it's totally comparable with its rival at that time - the SEGA Mega Drive! If NEC will ever remake this console I'll definitely buy it!

    Oh man, what you've done...Since I watched this video the last year, I've dreamed every day with this console. And today, FINALLY, I decided to go with it. I'm SO happy right now...I'm from Spain and here PC Engine is like somekind of myth. I've picked up a Core Grafx and a couple of games and now I'm the most poor guy in the neighbourhood, and the most happy as well!!!
    I've picked up Ninja Spirit, GunHed, and Bonk 1 and man...oh man. You've discovered to me a new universe!!

    I have a Turbo Duo that I inherited from my dad, with a whole bunch of games. My favorite one is called Magical Chase it is such a fun side scrolling shooter. Love them. He was a avid fan of Hudson games and collected as many as he could. The games are so much fun! Recently purchased a Super Console Cube X3 that has like 110,000 games from sixty consoles. There are PC engine titles from Hudson that I didn't even know existed, and they are fantastic to play. The titles my dad bought are on it also. Great video, happy gaming!! :)

      +Otis Whitaker I can't stand it either. I'm not sure at what point the FPS become just "shooter," but we have decades of shooters prior, and "Shoot 'em Up" and "Shmup" just sounds ridiculous, like it's a Wild West game or something. Come on. They're shooters! Oh well.

    • @Harp00nX
      @Harp00nX 9 років тому +5

      My rant on the subject:
      I still call shoot em ups shoot em ups (shmups is a retarded phrase that
      just shouldn't not be said out loud), don't let the shitty fps genre
      steal the title shoot em up away from it's rightful owner. Make people
      call those games first person shooters or third person shooters or doom
      clones whatever but fps lovers can fuck off trying to steal shoot em ups from a game genre that has been called that since the 70s.

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic 9 років тому

      +Barry's World I'd honestly never even heard them called "shoot 'em ups" until fairly recently. To me, they were always shooters, since Galaga or Space Invaders. Doom and the like were first-person shooters, and X-Wing and the like were space combat simulators or something along those lines. :)

I've not had one long and I have a modest 15 hucard complete games so far,but it's quickly becoming my favourite retro console. Awesome Johnny, I love my PC engines, especially my briefcase unit with the CD-ROM. Both of my machines are still working perfectly after all these years. The selection of games in Japan is massive. Like you said there are literally hundreds of games for just about any genre to collect for. Also for anyone looking for the games but not the system, the Wii still has quite a few on the virtual console and there are even a few available on psn for the PS3 and psp/vita.

    It's amazing that the PC Engine came out in 1987. I suddenly realized I had never once played a PC Engine game which is something I fixed in early 2014. Bonk's Adventure surprised me with how fun and well designed it was. Shortly after, I decided to pick up a few of the base units, as the original white system and the two Core Grafx models are so beautifully designed. I had a Master System growing up, so the cards didn't surprise me, but the HuCards are fun to collect. You put it so well pointing out how very Japanese the system is, and it's fun to take chances on obscure, inexpensive HuCards and seeing how the games are. It's funny you put this video up now as I was just planning to investigate some strange games I haven't played much yet as well as seeing what other games are available from the sellers I like. Great video, HCG. I definitely agree that the PC Engine rocks.

    PC Engine now is $80 console only or $150 for the console plus accessories controller, video cable and power suply. With CD player is 300+ in all the versions core duo, etc. This console are getting higher prices very, very fast. If someone want to collect or play this console have to buy it as soon as posible, because in a few years will be inaccessible for the majority of gamers.

  • @Michirin9801
    @Michirin9801 9 років тому +29

    "It had a pseudo-16 bit feel" Pseudo my arse, it DID have 2 16 bit graphics processors, only the CPU was 8 bit... (And even that 8 bit CPU was very capable and fast! It even surpassed the 16 bit CPU of the SNES) The colour-count was amazing btw, the Turbografx 16 could show more colours on-screen than the Genesis and the SNES combined, and bigger sprites too! (although less sprites on-screen and per-scanline)
    The only technical disadvantage the PC engine had in comparison to the SNES and Genesis was its single Background layer against 2 of the Genesis and 3 of the SNES, because of that many games for the system lacked parallax scrolling, but many tricks could be used to simulate having extra layers, but I won't get into those, just look at Magical Chase, Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder and you'll see some amazing Parallax Scrolling being done on a single BG layer...

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 9 років тому +5

      Timothy Vreeland Well, I actually love the SNES sound, it has my favourite soundchip ever, but the CPU was horrible... The CPU could only go as high as 3.6 MHz but the bus was stuck at 2.4 MHz actually...
      The graphics were good though, and that's about the only real advantage of the SNES, it had both the high colour count (but not as high as the Turbo) and the 3 BG layers, but even then the SNES rarely (if ever) did higher resolution games... Still SNES games did look pretty...
      What makes people think the SNES is more powerful are the built-in support for certain visual effects (mode 7 and semi-transparency comes to mind)
      Yeah, the CPU was really crippled, the system was low-res and I can totally see someone (like you) not liking the sound, but some other people do like it a lot and you gotta give it that it did have some pretty darn good games (although not as many hidden gems as the competition) and the graphics did look pretty and rather impressive for the time...

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 9 років тому

      +Timothy Vreeland The SNES had the best GPU of that era (unless you want to count the Neo-Geo AES). It's only real weakness is it's low resolution (which is the same as the PC-Engine, and of course not counting the horrendously limited hi-res mode only truly utilized in a single game) and somewhat stiff sprite limits.
      The sound front is a bit of a mixbag, sampled sounds are very stiff and unnatural for some instruments but are great for special effects and voices (using the right amount of memory that is)
      The CPU on the other hand is extremely slow and a real bottleneck.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 9 років тому +3

      Timothy Vreeland (Warning: long text)
      Well, the Genesis is only able to do Red Zone and Star Fox without an extra chip because of its AMAZING 68000 CPU clocked at 7.3 MHz!
      And I'll have to agree that when used correctly the Genesis soundchip can sound pretty darn awesome because, well, it's friggin' FM synth, nothing in there is compressed, unless they use sound samples on FM channel 5, the Genesis soundchip handles samples atrociously, but that aside, everything else synthesized on-the-fly...
      BUT when it's to compare the Genesis soundchip to other better FM synth chips it kinda pales in comparison... I'll give the Genesis this much: It does sound a lot better than any Konami FM chip (the most notorious being the VRC7 used in the Famicom game Lagrange Point) and it also sounds better than most mid-80s arcade games and even the sound-blaster for the old IBM compatibles, but when you compare it to other better FM synth chips like the one inside of the Neo Geo, the Sharp X68000, the NEC PC-88 and PC-98, the Fujitsu FM-7 and FM Towns, the Genesis just pales in comparison... The YM2612 (the soundchip of the Genesis) is just a budget version of the YM2608 which is found on the NEC computers, it has a certain distortion which was notoriously fixed on the later Genesis models which "Ruined" the soundtracks of games that took advantage of such distortion, and it lacks a real PCM (which the YM2608 had) and lacks the SSG channels which it made up for with the PSG channels it carried over from the Master System...
      In any case, the Genesis sounds great! But it's not the best... I like it a lot! But I also like the Super Nintendo sound a lot for completely different reasons... But you know what sounds friggin' awesome? The soundchip of the system shown in this very video! Just listen to the soundtracks of Soldier Blade, Magical Chase, Bloody Wolf, After Burner II, Dragon's Curse, Batman, Devil's Crush, Cratermaze, among many many others, They've done all of that on 6 sound channels! And it still sounds awesome!
      Everybody talks about Donkey Kong Country music and Streets of Rage music, yeah, we all know! They sound awesome! But the PC engine also does, so let's get more people talking about Soldier Blade music!

      +Ruko Michiharu Most know that these days.It never bother me that the console was 8-bit with a 16-bit processor.Not the best time to collect for the console either,unless you ignore the TG16 and stick to the PCE.The other being buy a flash cart,such as the turbo everdrive to play the expensive hucards.Lucky for me,when i bought the console again in 2005 i was able to rebuy what i owned before plus more.

      +Timothy Vreeland I'm not sure what you're taking about, the Super Famicom sound chip was NOT garbage. In any way. I'm guessing you've never played Actraiser. This is not some Nintendo fanboy response either - I'm probably the biggest PC Engine fan you could meet. I own every single piece of PCE hardware that NEC ever released. The Super Famicom, Mega Drive & PC Engine were all amazing in their own ways, they all had strengths and weaknesses. Your comments just come off a fanboy rant.

    What struck me as nuts was having all those Sega titles on the Engine. Outrun, Alterbeast, and Afterburner to name a few. Also some other solid arcade ports were Operation Wolf, Double Dragon 2 and Chase HQ. I've been wrestling with selling off my game collection and the hardest is going to be the PC/Turbo stuff. I'm probably one of the few people that have their original Turbo games complete and mint (outer cardboard boxes) still plus I have a ton of sealed PC Engine games.

    I didn't learn about the system until a Homestar Runner cartoon mentioned it about ten years ago.
    The TG16 was sort of before my time. I'm old enough to remember when the SNES and Genesis were still current, but I was just a little kid. My only exposure to video games was what I got to play and see firsthand, and what I saw in commercials. I didn't start learning to read until 1994, so I wouldn't have been able to read about it in gaming magazines even if I knew those magazines existed. I didn't have any older brothers or cousins or anything like that around who could have mentioned it, either. Relatively obscure stuff like this, the Jaguar, AES, Lynx, etc were a complete unknown until I got into high school and was able to both use the internet more often and read the stash of old game magazines that my art teacher had lying around.

    Back in around 1989-1990, there was a shop on Kingsway that sold PC Engine. I got my base ystem there together with The King Fu. This shop then moved into Aberdeen Centre when the mall was first opened in 1990(or 1991?).

    You're the best collector on UA-cam. I really like how you talk about the games you have and love, rather than your piles of new purchases. The games you already own and love are far more impressive than the lot of new crap you'll stick in a box somewhere. Thanks for being rad, dude!

    Great video. I share your enthusiasm. Thanks for posting. You can collect all of the games, it just takes a great deal of effort and money. It became something of an obsession of mine. What started off as a relative cheap hobby, ended up costing me a fortune.

    I remember when I was 11 going to one of those stores where you can pay by the hour to play video game systems. I saw TurboGrafx 16 and thought it was the coolest thing I have ever seen especially the hu cards! so colorful and beautiful. I recently got the pc engine and cd combo and it's everything I remembered.

    PC Engine is my all time favourite console. It's the system that turned me from a casual gamer to a hardcore gamer back in 1989 and introduced me to the glorious Japanese import scene. I don't think any other system can come close to matching the unique charm and character of the venerable PCE.

    The PC Engine/TurboGrafx is one of those systems that I'll probably never collect for. I already import famicom, super famicom, mega drive, and saturn games. I barely have time to play games as is. Sometimes you just got to see the writing on the wall but I can really tell you love it.

    I'll bet you're wondering why the cover of "Double Dungeons" has a big "W" on it.
    In Japan, "W" is often used instead of "double". A burger with an extra patty on it might be called a "W burger" on the menu, but it'd be pronounced "double burger", for example.

    I usually play RPGs for that system(on my emulator of course) such as Momotaro Densetsu Turbo/2/Gaiden.What's so special about MomoDen Turbo is that the game itself is a PCE adaptation of the game for the FamiCom(Japanese NES) and it had changed dramatically adding new contents(including new events, dungeons, enemies, even bosses) while other contents have been removed(headgear- and accessory-type equipments, some enemies and some events),some rewards and puzzles switch places and the final boss being made much harder(like 4000 HP).If you're up for a challenge, i recomend the PCE version.

    Cool video, I always had a love for 'TG16' as well, I scored my first one when I was about 18, I traded a paintball gun/marker for the Turbo Graphx 16 with Bonk, Galaga '90 & Keith Corurage. Later I scored a Turbo Duo & I still have one with about a dozen games. I liked your Shinobi game, I need to score one now! I have a PC Engine converter for TG16 (they cost about $100 now!?!) I glad you showed much love to Ninja Spirit, awesome & hard game! BTW if you ever get back to Waikiki, I owe you a beer! If we dont meet up, try going to Kona Brewing company & get a variety sampler.

    Johnny Dude! I picked up a Pc Engine and CD rom unit becuase of your videos! That was almost a year ago now! Its pretty hard for me to find Hucards and CD games for it In the UK, but I have amassed a pretty good collection of both! I have yet to get any of the RPG's and thats the genre I love most! they are so god damn expensive in this Country! and they are worse on e-bay! But what I have I thoroughly enjoy! thank you man!. I had to do a bit of work on the CD unit, it needed a gear replaced on it and the laser pickup replaced, but google was my friend! and it works like a champ now! Look forward to seeing more about such a cool little system! Cheers mate!

    Had my coregrafx for about a month now, having loads of fun with a whole new library of games to explore. Wish this awesome system was brought to the UK in vast quantities when I was a kid back in the day. Only person I knew who had one back then was an American lad I was at school with who lived at the local airbase lol.

      +Paul Rhodes If I just wanted to play the games, I'd get an emulator on PC and download the ROMs. And to be honest, I do that sometimes. Mostly to check out an expensive retro-game before I buy it, but also because I can't afford a fraction of the games I want. But as for collecting games, I want the original ones only. I don't see the point in collecting unoriginal games. :-)

    From Japan,
    The PC Engine was difficult for children to obtain because both the console and the game software were expensive.
    The graphics of the PC Engine were more beautiful than those of the NES, so it was the target of children's dreams.
    However, the cheaper Mega Drive (Genesis) and Super Famicom (SNES) were released in the 1990s, and many children bought them.
    However, the PC Engine had many deep-rooted fans and remained popular until the middle of the 90s.
