In this video I show you how to remove the mold or mildew smell from the AC and blower of your E46 BMW. Some Lysol or air purifier sprayed in the cabin filter housing with the fan running should circulate the cleaner and eliminate the smell.

Where is the "AC drain tube" exactly? I get the impression that my AC system is getting full of condensation when I have the AC on, which then sits and festers causing a foul smell. This doesn't happen during the colder months when I only use the heater. Clearly some damp is lingering somewhere it shouldn't when the AC condenser is in in use.
After trying this procedure, I recommend going even further; SOME of the spray will land on/in the evaporator, but only a bit.
First get the car fully warmed up and run the heater - non-recirc - for 10-15 mins on full windscreen to dry everything out. Open the windows during the drive, if need be.
Remove the cabin filter housing and the ducting, the firewall plastic panel, and then the cover for the blower motor - get all the way down to the evaporator so that the fins are visible. Then use one of the AC cleaner foams - I orderer Mannol 9971, but there are many others - directly on the evaporator, and leave it for 10-15 mins; the foam is very persistent and will soak the fins.
Finally, run full heat, non-recirc on the windscreen to dry again.
Congratulations on keeping your BMW so, so clean.
The engine looks brand new. Awesome.!!!!
Thanks Tonio! It didn't always look that clean, here's my DIY for how I did it: ua-cam.com/video/uNZG6uXT17Q/v-deo.html
BIMMER ZEIT I have a 328 2000 same gray color. Thank you for taking the time to show us less fortunate how to do thing the right way.
Love all your videos.
I will clean my engine just like you showed me.
Thank you sgain.
I tried this today - dumped quite a lot of Dettol (UK anti-septic similar to Lysol) into the air intake with the fan running, then let it soak. Ended up with a nice smell in the cabin👍.
Is it worth using one of those AC bombs in the footwell to get the areas subject to the recirc function?
Did you completely eliminate the bad smell with the spray?..i have the same problem in my car.. thanks
beautiful engine
Hey man, would you happen to know what a good price range for a 330i/ci would be? I dont want to drop thousands into repairing it and im not sure what to look for exactly. Got any tips?
Check out Kelley Blue Book and NADA for used values. Also browse eBay for recently sold and see what the market is bringing. Service records are important, I'd look for something around 100k miles as a good value/price ratio. Lower mileage cars will be substantially higher asking prices. Either way I'd budget at least $1000-$1500 additional for bringing the car's maintenance up to spec.
My 328i is under the passenger side glove box. Do I just spray the disinfectant spray in the filter housing ?
Yes. Also if you get a foam a/c cleaner, thats the same place you want to spray that foam
Was only a temporary fix for my e82.
Fucked up something in my car the fan now makes a loud noise. Do not do this unless you know what you are doing. I think it sucked up a small amount of the paper towel i was using to wipe up the residual.
Thanks mate!🤙
Where did you get that brushed nickel auto shift knob?
You still running this channel?
I have used A/C & Heating System Treatment product from Wurth with good results. Lysol could be a much cheaper alternative. The Wurth instructions state that you should have the A/C on full speed when applying the product. You want to draw the product through the A/C's evaporator since that's where mold/mildew can also form. Keep in mind that the smell will eventually return because of the design of the system. They recommend you turn off the A/C with the fan still running a few minutes before shutting off the car to dry out the system.
Solid tips, thanks for sharing your experience man! I will have to find the Wurth product now, they make the best stuff.
I bought it from Amazon. It's expensive, which is why I said Lysol would be a cheaper solution. The 16 oz. can is a better deal than the 6 oz. can, but both are good for for several applications. www.amazon.com/Wurth-Heating-System-Treatment-16/dp/B008NCBT1Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1508683845&sr=1-1&keywords=Wurth+A%2FC+%26+Heating+System+Treatment

BMW appears to b the only vehicle with this issue. Less expensive brands don't suffer from this awful odor...insane..
Check for clogged AC drains first
