Intro: When the Mi Band 6 was released, the performance of its health features were disappointing, especially its heart rate tracking. However, as we’ve seen for other devices, firmware updates can result in huge improvements. So, almost a year later, has the heart rate tracking of the Mi Band 6 improved? Well, that is what we will find out in this video, and to summarize, it actually seems like it might have improved quite significantly.
For those of you that are new to the channel, my name is Rob, and I am a postdoctoral scientist specializing in biological data analysis. For this video I wanted to do a comprehensive test of the Mi Band 6, so I bought a total of 3 Mi Band 6’s. I tested two Mi Band 6’s on myself, to be sure the results were not influenced by manufacturing variations between devices; and the third was tested by others, to see if results were any different when tested on other people.
First, we will very briefly recap how the Mi Band 6 performed when it was released. Second, we will look at the results of an extensive test I did of the Mi Band 6 in the end of 2021, where I tested it for more than 30 workouts. Third, we will check if the performance of the Mi Band 6 is consistently good when used by different individuals of the Austrian Junior Rowing Squad. And, fourth, we will look at the performance of a brand new Mi Band 6 that I bought this week. As you will see, it is this last test that is particularly confusing to me.
Conclusion: All in all, I think that these results look quite promising for the Mi Band 6. Most of the results I obtained are quite a lot better than the results I originally got for the Mi Band 6. Given the low price-tag of the Mi Band 6, it might be the right fit for people that are not looking to spend too much money on a heart rate tracker. However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before buying the Mi Band 6: firstly, as you saw, I did get some conflicting results at the end of my testing, this could potentially mean there could be some variation in quality between different units that are produced. Second, I am not the biggest fan of the “Mi Wear” app, which was actually rebranded to the “Mi Fitness” app this week. It frequently had issues synching my data to other apps like Strava, so it was not the most reliable for me in that respect. Third, the Mi Band 7 is rumored to be released i n the next few months, so you might want to wait for my tests of that Smartband before buying the Mi Band 6. Though, also keep in mind that the Mi Band 7 might also need a couple of months to get a stable firmware version.

Hello. Please make a comparison between wahoo tickr fit vs polar verity sense. This is what is missing from your channel. Why do you think Wahoo and Polar don't add SpO2 to their products? For many it is important.
Can you review Gshock GSW-H1000, please?
Mann this is crazy , this is what we call a review not just telling about feature but telling the accuracy .
Thanks so much madhuri matta, really appreciate the compliment! It takes a lot of time to make each of these videos, so positive feedback like this always means a lot!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist always here for u :)
I own a Mi band 6 and this was an unexpected video, i always had this "bad" image of the watch since i watched your last test on it. The improvement is quit impressive, especially for the price, i wonder if sleep tracking improved similarly. Thank you for your efforts.
Glad I could help Nazim! This shows that firmware can potentially make a huge difference
@@TheQuantifiedScientist my uncle has some heart problems and it was recommended to buy a watch to track his heart rate, ECG, everything related to heart problems.
what would you recommend? either watch, either band, but something that would export measurements. he is not having an iPhone, so Apple watch might not be good.
@@TheQuantifiedScientist Looking forward for your new test !
@@DarkseidS Then i would suggest to go for Fitbit brand smart band and smartwatch, theyare the most accurate ones after Apple watch.
@@DarkseidS polar devices
Well done, I have been waiting for your updated review as I could realize mi band's heart rate discrepancy right when it was first released. I immediately switched to using my old Honor band 5 which was mor consistent especially while performing my LIIT workouts
I am stunned!! didn't expect to have a video of this high caliber on youtube!!!...... Thank you for your effort, your video helped me a lot in deciding whether to buy the mi band 6 or not.
Mi band 6,s accuracy is improved by the firmware updates which is really good. Thanks Rob for telling
Hi Thanks for commenting! Yes, it seems so, though some results are still slightly confusing🙃
Really appreciate the thoroughness of the research here! I'm keeping an eye on the upcoming 7 and looking forward to seeing your coverage of it :)
Really cool to see other people testing the devices for you!
I bough my Mi Band 6, two weeks ago, since that they I was looking for a review after my purchase... I saw the last video you did about it, but I remain curious about the firmware, so today I'm seeing this video with the same firmware and now I aware about it! Thank you very much!
Thank you for all the work you do and the information you make available to us.
Thanks! Really appreciate it!
amazing videos, hopefully you wont stop making these in the future
I purchased Mi band 6 for my wife recently just for steps tracking and sleep wake-up tracking. I somehow had feeling that it might improve. Thanks for updated review Rob. That helps. Pls provide update on sleep tracking too if possible. UA-camrs shud take u as inspiration on how the reviews shud be made.
Nice, excited to view this since I am currently using the mi band 6. Greetings from The Netherlands!
Hi Niels! Dankjewel en groeten terug!
Another great video!
While you typically review wearables, I’d love to see you do a video on FitTrack’s Dara Smart Scale! I’m curious just as to how accurate their 17 proclaimed metrics are and think that this type of thing would be right up your alley given your expertise in this field. Cheers!
Hi Rob, I'm really glad UA-cam algorithm brought me here. I've watched many of your videos, and I'm really impressed. Do you have plan to publish research papers about these costumer grade devices? like comparing it for example. I need a lot of references to use these devices to measure sleep time. Thank you! Great video as always.
Thank you so much for covering this mi band 6 again 👍🏻👍🏻
No problem Quan Quan😊
Thank you for this good accuracy testing!!! 👍👍👍
Looks like your channel is very underrated. You make really good reviews.
Wowww I'd love this kind of re-review after 6 months or so!
Hello from Malaysia! Thanks for your great professional quality reviews. Your time and effor t in doing the reviews are very much appreciated. Looking forward with keen interest to your retest of the other health features of Mi Band 6 following the firmware upgrade. What is the version of the firmware that you are using for the Mi Band 6 retest? Keep up the great work! Liked and Subscribed.
kudos 4 this informative lab accurate review!
Your Channel is underrated. You deserve many more subscribers
Hi Rob! I am watching your videos since 1 year now and I can tell that i really like the way you are reviewing smart bands. I would like to see how is performing Amazfit band 7. Waiting for that review! All the best Rob!
As always very helpful. Thank you. Have ticwatch gth pro test in mind?
This is really useful and informative! One question though, how did you manage to extract the detailed data out of the Mi Band 6?
Excellent review bra
This is one if not THE...largest selling fitness band in the world...let's all hope the Mi Band 7 is another step in the right direction as far as accuracy and functionality.
Hi! Yeah, I certainly think it is (one of) the biggest Fitness band indeed! Super popular!😊 Waiting for the Band 7!!
No way. You can't get low price and also accuracy, it's quite hard.
@@overPowerPenguin It's only a matter of time. We see this all the time with smartphones - "Cheap phones are getting good. And good phones are getting cheap" The same will happen with fitness bands.
@@mboiko No, it's different. You can't have a bigger screen, touch, battery and a better sensor the same time at the same price.
If price will go up then yes.
Even with phones there's a cut here and there to save some money.
@@overPowerPenguin This video clearly shows that with no more than a firmware update accuracy of a low-cost fitness band can be improved significantly. The vast majority of people just need something that has an accurate step count, heart rate, sleep timer, and a week or more of battery life. The Mi Band 6 does all this now for a very low cost. For those needing more...there are many higher-cost options. This is why the Mi Band line of fitness bands has been a global success story. I have no doubt the Mi Band 7 will have a slight increase in price...but will no doubt be a fraction of the price of many much higher-cost options. Only time will tell.
Hi! I just find out your channel and I found it super informative and interesting! Let's just say I want it to track my yoga and swimming sessions and the sleep... but I also want a budget band, so would you recommend this one or the Amazfit 5? Because after your review I was leaning more towards the Amazfit, but this update confused me a bit haha.
Thanks for the review
I use the mi band 6 every day but I don't rely on it during excersize. It has trouble measuring high heartrates, where my Magene H64 cheststrap measures around ~180 bpm my mi band measures ~110-120 bpm. For other use I really like it because of the small design. Furthermore, it does nearly always think I'm sleeping early when in reality I'm watching UA-cam till 1am.
It would be nice if you could conduct tests to see how accurate these types of heart rate trackers are, relative to skin color. It would be great to see which fitness monitors perform best on wearers with darker skin and or tattoos on their wrists.
Your first review of the Mi Band 6 made me not buy them, but the newest review is actually getting me thinking now. I'm riding casually and I wouldn't mind getting them now. Thanks for another great review!
5/9 is not a great score for accuracy
@@SF-li9kh True, I will wait for future updates or look for something else
Now that's what I call a review 👌🏻👍🏻
Thanks Rob for this long awaited update review. I always "believed" in the band 6 based on the fact that in your first review it would either follow the polar chest strap very well or completely fail (in spinning which is only relevant for me), and I was convinced that this pickup failure, seen in the first review, could be fixed. I regarded this as much less problematic to fix than consistently wrong data, like following the polar h10 but with consistently to high or to low values as seen in a few crappy devices you tested and did not recommended. I am looking forward for part two of the update review and will definetly stay with the mi fit app.
Thanks Yodan!
Loved your efforts and content subscribed done
Really good video! I'd love to see something similar about the samsung galaxy fit 2
Good job as usual !
Thanks so much Georges!!
Could you review the older apple watches? Would be interesting to see if they're as accurate as the newer versions
The circular ring recently opened for preorders and I really hope you review it once it comes out and compare it to the oura ring
Thanks man!!!
As an electronics engineer, this makes me disturbingly satisfied 👍
Great video! I upgraded to the MiBand 6 from the 5 a few months ago. However, the PAI score is not adding one day to the next in order to have a 7 day running total, as it always has. I've rebooted, done a factory reset, etc. all to no avail. Unfortunately, the rest of the features on this watch are of no use to me without PAI. Do you have a comparable alternative?
Crazy information!!
This Is review. Excellent job!
Personally if i had to buy a band i would wait for the 7 because i like big displays
Thanks so much Giacomo! Really appreciate it! I am also really curious about the 7!
@@TheQuantifiedScientist 😉
Hoping for a watch s1 review soon!
Hey, Rob! Which fitness tracker would you recommend more to me if I were to buy one? The Mi Band 6 or the Huawei Band 6? Both seem very compelling to me, consequently making me unable to decide. I want one for mostly casual usage and walking. Keep up the magnificent work!
Which you decided?
@@sivaprakash2247 Didn't buy either of one. Waiting for Mi Band 7 to launch in my country.
Would be nice to see a review of the now flagship Xiaomi Watch S1, im curios to see whether the higher price tag also comes with better sensors
I've just commented the old video xD. i was interested on the update video about it. i wanted to see if the software have been updated, and if the spo2 is some what believable. Not for medical reasons, only tracking over time.
(i was thinking about upgrading to a mi band 6 from the 5, to better track sleep without changing my habits with my watch)
Great video! Please do a video for Amazon Halo.
When are you going to take the band swimming? I would love to see a review on that activity.
I noticed that the screen turns on when I'm taking a shower. Even with the lock screen feature activated.
That's not good, given that I bought the band primarily to track my swims.
I got my band this week.
Hello. Please make a comparison between wahoo tickr fit vs polar verity sense. This is what is missing from your channel.-
I tend to believe that there are variations in the production quality of any band. I have bought a cheaper Huawei Watch Fit recently and compared it with my friend's bought 1 year ago and compared their heart rate accuracy just to find big differences.
Could you do the same multi band test with other bands like Huawei band 6 (Honor band 6)?
Also expecting first tests from you for OPPO band, oppo band 2, oppo band free.
Keep up the good work.
They will have a measuring tolerance which would explain the difference
What apps did you used for mi band 6? Thanks for the answer on my question in advance
I'm waiting for your huawei gt runner review... would it be better than garmin latest instinct 2 in term of accuracy and health ecosysytem?
thanks a lot foe your informative videos ,, really enjoyed your videos
could you please test VO2MAX in your upcoming videos
Wow I just bought a new Mi band 6 today and the video was very helpful. Now I know not to trust the heart rate result while doing cardio
Rumors for Mi Band 7 are circulating. I guess and hope all the issues will be solved in the new generation. Huawei figured out how to measure heart rate accurately. Xiaomi can do it as well. I also hope they improve SpO2 values.
Without a scientist like this who would even know the accuracy ? That's what they are banking on. Nobody knows if it was accurate in the first place. Thus sales are unaffected
Hi Yıldıray! Lets hope that the Mi Band 7 will do well!
Which budget fitness would you recommend?
Mine has definetly the contrary bias: sometimes I'm just starting, and around 5 minutes of fast waking it registers 170 bpm, when in reality would be something around 130. This continues for around 2-3 min. At first I thought it had something to do with the band being too loose on the arm, but even now it still happens around 25% of times.
The same problem... I was terrified I was having a heart problem (I was suffering tachicardyas some months ago because of a B12 deficit problem)
Mine has NFC and a microphone for AI but all that can't be used in Europe 😞
Bought it together with Mi Scale 2 so Mi Fit app is very comfortable to use since it has all data in 1 place.
Only noticed a few times when the readings were wrong. Sometimes it doesn't detect a short wake up in the middle of the night.
Please do the same with honor band 6 as well, it now has continuous SPO2 and 95 workout modes from new firmware update!!
I originally had some no-name health band which had worked quite well (once I understood its variations in what it reported) until it 'bricked' itself.. and I ended-up grabbing an Mi 6 last week.
Having only used the Mi 6 for a week, it seems Ok... but I'm not sure about the heart rate when sleeping, which seems very low for me. When awake, I was testing it out against an Omron IA2 Blood Pressure Monitor (which, while 10+ years old, calibrates Ok against more modern devices). The resting/after walking heart rates compare Ok... but I still have this doubt about the sleeping heart rates.
I wonder if the variations can arise from perspiration (removing the band and cleaning your arm and the sensor between 'trials') and therefore, from diet, where vitamins and other factors can change the ... (can't recall the words) ... owing to changes in the skin/surface texture/(more lost words) ...? (Traditional) lie detectors can go a bit awry owing to these conditions so maybe the same issues affect the sensors in the bands?
Thanks a heap for posting, though -- very helpful and informative.
I own the band 6 for more than 6 months now. It is picking up my office work as steps, therefore I only use it when I exercise.
Nice 🔥🔥🔥
good job bro
Hi Rob 🏋🏻♂️
This makes me very hopeful for the Mi Band 7
Me too! Let's hope I get one soon! ;-)
Hey man. Could you please recommend a smartwatch for android for $250, priority being intense workouts and sleep tracking
What you think about put the mi band in differents parts of the wrist? I think the results are gonna to change
Hi! I have a question. Is there a setting within this watch that hides the content of notifications when the watch is not worn?
The band has the very same issues, as the earlier ones. I'm using it only for indoor cycling and 80-90% from the trainings it measures very well, but in the other 10-20% it measures only half of the real heart rate.
Yes - this Rob of a dude is the king of biotechs - in UA-cam’s
Thanks so much Awesome Brotherhood! And thanks for commenting😊
Could you let me know how to export the data from the smart band? Thank you!
Could you re-test huawei watch gt2 and gt2 pro (After updates) ??
do you think the way you wear it makes it give different results.?
Just bought one. My resting heart rate was manually measured at 71. The Mi detected it at 72.
I got the mi band 6 last October 2021. HR monitor is a hit and miss for me, not sure if it has anything to do with the fit of the band
The most legit reviewer in the entire youtube community
you should give "notify and fitness" a go. many say its more accurate than the official app.
do you recommend mi band 7 or Redmi band pro ?
Can you please give it another try for Galaxy Fit 2? Galaxy Fit 2 also got an update. Maybe compare with this model.
I have found the same thing at rest the HR is good but during spin training sessions it can be terrible. It tends to work good one day and horrible the next (inconsistent). Walking HR seems generally good and step tracking is also reliable. Overall a waste of space for serious training. On the upside it is waterproof so that is a bonus.
So, which is better? updated Huawei band 6 or updated mi band 6?
Between the Mi band 6 and the Redmi Smart Band Pro which one would you say is more relaible? I would wait for the Band 7 but even if it releases mid year I know I will not found it in my country till end of the year lol, so I have to choose between these two 😊 (Huawei is not an option for me because of the features limitation not using them with a phone of the same brand)
Hi Zoo! That is not an easy question to answer... I think the Mi Band 6 seems to have the potential for better heart rate tracking though
Do you know if there is a notification for irregular heartbeat rate (e.g. arrhythmia)?
does this update improve Mi band 4 accuracy ?
Can you do a review of amazfit stratos smartwatch
is there a failure mechanism behind it? most of the time when i find it not working properly, i just take it off and clean my waist a little, then it will work better.
Can you compare this to the mi band 7
Please review the new Mi Watch S1/S1 active
What about sleep tracking accuracy? Is it accurate?
I'm thinking about getting the me band 6 to be there at 7 looks like it justney's a little bit more work because of the continuous features it has it breaks down the battery 5 much faster
Can you please test the G Shock watches with their heart rate and such?
Has the sleep tracking improved as well, it's an important feature to me? I'm undecided between this one and a fitbit. The fitbit charge 4 or inspire 2 would stretch my budget too much atm.
Good work on these videos, a lot of great info.
Did you hear, he is re-testing the other features. Better wait with your purchase.
Please test the Xiaomi watch S1 and S1 active.
Your hand got hair in the position where you keep sensor?
Usually every band and smartwatch I've got measure lower BPM if there's hair in between. That's why I shave a little my wrist.
Consider also these Chinese devices are designed and tested by them so also should be a difference between their results and others.
This is the best accurate review. Haha.
Can you see second by second data using the mi band?
how long battery bro?
Mi band 6 vs huwai band 6 which is best in terms of accuracy 🔥
