    Intro: This is the Redmi Smart Band Pro, the cheapest smartwatch I have reviewed in months. However, its performance might surprise you, because as we’ve seen in my previous videos, the price of a watch does not always reflect its quality. In this video I’ll scientifically test the Smart Band Pro from a health-tracking perspective. And, I have to say, for the price, the watch might be a good choice for quite some people. I’ll first show you the things it was good at, then I’ll move on to the things that were mediocre [point], and I’ll close off with the things it did not do so well.
    First, let me share the most important background information on this watch. On the surface there is a lot to like about this watch. Though prices vary, I bought it for an equivalent of about 50 dollars, which is surprisingly cheap. The display of the watch is quite beautiful and comes in at 1.47 inches. The watch has no physical buttons, but the touchscreen is really responsive and easy to use. Compared to for instance the original Mi Watch Lite, which had a similar looking menu, the touch capabilities of the Redmi Smart Band Pro are much improved. The Smart Band Pro is pretty light, weighing just 15 grams, and as is true for most modern smartwatches, it is waterproof up to 5 atmospheres. The watch has many of the features we have come to expect from smart bands and watches: it has 24-hour Heart Rate Monitoring, it can measure your blood oxygen saturation or SpO2 and tracks your sleep stages and sleep quality. The band also claims to monitor your stress levels. Now, I won’t test that feature in this video, but I personally have some doubts about its accuracy and usefulness. I couldn’t find a real description of how this works, but on Reddit and Quora people mentioned it was likely based on heart rate variability. Honestly, I can’t say much more without proper testing and more information, but my gut feeling is that the technology and algorithms underlying this stress monitoring feature of the Smart Band Pro still need to be developed further. One other feature that could be valuable to women is Female Health tracking, where the band predicts and tracks the transitions of the “female cycle stages”, as Redmi calls it. NowI should mention that the Smart Band Pro does not include a temperature sensor, which does likely limit the accuracy of such a feature. The app used for the Smart Band Pro is the Xiaomi Wear App on android and the Xiaomi Wear Lite App on iPhone. This app is pretty basic, but works fine for the most part. I honestly liked the original Mi Fit app better, and I don’t really understand why they insist on filling half of the starting screen with some random avatar, but it works fine. For a few months now the app also includes Strava integration and the app also connects to Apple Health. Especially this Strava integration is super helpful, though I did notice that if I started a GPS based exercise without taking my phone with me, these activities won’t sync to Strava; so be aware of that.

      I'm both impressed, and, disappointed... Impressed at the intensity and thoroughness of your testing... However, I'm disappointed at the fact that as Blood Pressure monitoring features are being brought forward and improved, there's no testing on this feature. Yeah, maybe your priorities are on sleep tracking, heart rate, step counting etc... But... I'm looking for a decent smart band/Smartwatch that has a GOOD average results for BP/HR/o2... (Have just found out i'm just into the Stage 2 Hypertension zone...) I have also scoured UA-cam for accurate/as accurate as they can be Smartbands/Smartwatches, but, there's a lot of crap out there, videos and watches... So, what info can you offer? I would like to keep an eye on my progress on reducing my BP without carrying around me Salter battery powered BP Monitor lol... Thanks 🤔 😎🇬🇧

    Hey Rob, a fellow scientist here. I have a small suggestion. In my field of study I often include a "no model" comparison, which means a model where the outcome is random (but reasonable). The more I look into the sleep stages predictions of the small wearables the more I believe they don't do anything at all. I think we need a baseline comparison to a "no device". Get an average/typical human sleep cycle pattern, there must be one in the literature, and compare to that as baseline. I'm convinced that many devices will essentially fall on that baseline, showing that they are not doing any better than a reasonable guess would. I would not even be surprised if a good "reasonable guess" performs better than some. Think about it :) and keep up the good work!

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 роки тому +44

      Hi Polak! Yes, I have been thinking about something similar: taking the median sleep stages over all the PSG and EEG nights I have collected for myself (taking the moment I lay down as the starting point). I would have to think about how to select the length of the night. Alternatively I could do something similar, but binning the nights into nights of similar duration, thereby getting different "dummy" predictions for different night lengths.
      Thanks for the suggestion, this makes a lot of sense, and would create a nice baseline for checking "better than random"!

    • @polakmaciej1547
      @polakmaciej1547 2 роки тому +13

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist I'm afraid a median from your PSG/EEG night is not a good choice. It would be skewed towards your body/sleep and very likely really accurate. That way you would easily beat half of the devices if not more. To be fair it would have to be a median/average from a sample from a general population. I'll take a look at some papers later to see if anyone has published this, but I'm pretty sure they have, it's just a matter of finding the right paper. The issue of scaling the length of the night will probably be addressed there too, since they would probably compare between subjects within the study. I'll let you know if I find something good.

      Thanks LiveType! Yes, I do think it helps to add R2, however I do think the R2 can be a bit misleading sometimes, but I am thinking about adding something like "average difference" with the reference, maybe also correcting for the number of measurements in each of the heart rate ranges.

    @San37815 2 роки тому

    hey Rob I think if you wore the polar oh1 and polar verity sense on your temple using swim goggles with included adapter or on your chest using elastic bandage wrap, it could be more accurate when weight lifting since theres little movement and no muscles flexing to impact the sensor reading in those spots. it could also work for other wrist wearables if you can remove the strap.

    • @TheQuantifiedScientist
      @TheQuantifiedScientist  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Paisano! That would help for sure, though I doubt many people would want to take the effort of wearing a watch on a non-standard location. What do you think?

    • @San37815
      @San37815 2 роки тому

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist the goggles could be odd in public and affect vision but I myself would wear with an elastic bandage with polar ppg devices since they are not smart watches and have no screen so I would only wear them for excerise so I don't think it's an issue for me personally

So far not satisfied with redmi band pro . My mi band 3 and 4 works flawlessly . I recieved the band 2 days before and being using it continuosly plus 4 hours activity tracking too .
    Wäre cool wenn du dazu mal was bringen könntest. Überhaupt finde ich es blöd, dass nur die Apple Watch richtig gut ist. Will eigentlich was mit einer guten Akkulaufzeit wie Garmin oder so, aber die sind so oft so unpräzise. -.-

    This smart band seems like a great option. But I am wondering how it compares to the Oppo Watch Free? The Watch Free also seems to be in similar price range offering similar features and slightly better looks.

    Please, Make the Εvaluation Star System not up to 5 Stars but up to 10 Stars.
    Cause there is hundreds of Health and Smart Watches and is easier to separate them.
    I believe that there is Health and Smart Watches that are having up to 10 times declination the one with the other.

      Hi Pavlos! Thanks or the suggestion! I actually allow for half-stars, which essentially should boil down to more or less the same thing😊. It is just easier visually and with editing to have fewer items to work with😉

    For SPO2 - have you considered holding your breath to see if it drops?

    • @davidak_de
      @davidak_de Рік тому +1

      have you tried it? how well does it work?
      i have tried it with the Redmi Smart Band Pro. i was not able to hold the breath very long, like 30 seconds (i know you can train it) and did it multiple times. SP02 was 90 to 94. then i did go to the window and took deep breaths... SP02 was between 90 and 97. so it seem to has some effect and the result is not just random, but it feels like it has a measurement error of around 5 points. for me it was always above 90, even when measuring every 10 minutes while sleeping, so i'm not sure how useful it is

      @@davidak_de I've tried it with a cheap smartwatch I bought off aliexpress to prove that the SPO2 didn't work for that watch (It provided fake output for SPO2 and Blood Pressure). 30 seconds is plenty to see if the sensor works at all - which was my primary curiosity - thanks for checking. Unless you have health issues, SPO2 shouldn't drop below 90 while sleeping - it should preferably stay in the 95+ range.

    I have a problem with measuring stress. It measures just part of the day and it's mostly the part when I sleep so it says relaxed. As soon as I wake up it starts raising from mild to moderate and then - no data anymore. It's important to me cause I'm really a stressed person and this issue really bothers me, yet no one talks about it. Does anyone have any similar problems with that?
