Hair Donation
Wigs 4 Kids helps children who struggle to deal with the social acceptance often based on their physical appearance. Thank you for considering donating your hair to Wigs 4 Kids.
Specifications:
1. We accept 10 minimum hair length (tip to tip), however longer lengths are appreciated.
2. Hair needs to be clean, and thoroughly dry. Please bundle hair in a ponytail or braid before having it cut. After it has been cut please place in a plastic bag.
3. Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails and then cut.
4. Hair may not be colored or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).
5. You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10.
6. Wigs 4 Kids accepts hair from all ages.
7. Hair that was cut years ago is not usable.
8. Hair swept off the floor is not acceptable.
9. Wigs 4 Kids does not accept wigs, falls or synthetic hair.
10. PLEASE NOTE: Anyone may cut your hair as long as the above guidelines are followed.
The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.
Questions about Hair Donations
Will my ponytail make a wig?
It takes approximately 12 ponytails to create a wig.
Can I be certain that my hair will be used to make a wig?
The manufacturers make the selection based on several production criteria.
How does your hair become their hair?
Step One: A donor with clean dry hair secures it into a ponytail or braid, then cuts it. A minimum of 10 inches of hair is needed.
Step Two: The hair undergoes chemical processing at a science lab. This special treatment prepares and sanitizes hair properly.
Step Three: A hackle is used to carefully blend and direct the hair from root to end. Natural hair is a blend of many colors.
Step Four: One ponytail makes up only about 1/10 of the finished hairpiece. A blend of six to eight ounces of hair in varying shades of color ensures the natural look and feel of the child's wig.
Step Five: A plaster mold is made of the child's head.
Step Six: Once the mold is set, a liquid form is poured into the mold and allowed to dry. When the form and the mold are separated from one another, a cap that fits the size of the resulting cast is made. This cap serves as the foundation of the hairpiece. Because the child who wears the hairpiece will likely swim, shower, and sleep with it on. The design of this foundation is carefully considered and the materials from which it is made are carefully selected.
Step Seven: Each strand of hair is hand-tied. The hair is now designed for the child's request.

I went to the doctor and they said I had something that starts with a a.
I had to wear wigs for 2 years.
Now I'm 11 and I still have bald spots but my hair is grown where it's not noticeable.

thats a lot for a 9 year old to go thru. i know kids of all ages go thru this. since your comment was the first i read i wanted to tell you that know matter what length of hair you have or even if you are still bald in areas it doesnt matter. you're beautiful.. no matter what other people think or say who doesnt understand all of this and teases you dont let it effect you because you're beautiful. hair is only hair. its whats inside that matters. your heart cried at klaire's donation because you care and understand what its like to go thru all of that. thats a beautiful heart. beautiful no matter what.

when I was younger I cut my hair into a pixie cut and it's been nearly 6 years and my hair is only just below my shoulders... 😒

Im a guy and I decided to grow my hair out in my 30's so I could donate it to the American version of this charity called Locks of Love. I got my hair buzzed one day, then stopped cutting it for about 2.5 years. At that point my hair was a little over 12 inches but that was not just the pony tail, its was just 12 inches all over. So since I was going back to a short buzzed cut, my stylist put about 12 little mini pony tails in all over my head making them as close to my scalp as she could, then she cut each one off individually and we bound them all together. I wish I had taken a picture of that, it was so funny. I enjoyed having the longer hair, it was fun, but now that I am a 43 y/o man I just dont think Im going to go back to it. I still have really soft shiny brown hair with no grey in it, but my pony tail days are over. Im happy I was able to do it once and I hope my hair helped make a wig for a sweet kid going through hell.

When I asked my grandmother to get a pixie cut, she got angry ;-; I told her I wanted to donate my hair and that it was long enough for a program I found (8 inches for Pantene Beautiful Lengths), but she refused to let me cut my hair and said it'd look boyish and people would mistake me for a boy... I cried for about two hours,, and I'm not even joking ;~; I really wanted to cut my hair, because it's dry, plus I'm sick of it!! It's not fair!! DX

More people should do this. I do it all the time, as soon as my hair is long again, I have it cut off at the salon and donate it. Eveytime I do it the hairdresser keeps asking me with this nervous little voice: "Are you sure?". I think they always expect women to start crying or something. I do not have the same emotional attachment to my hair that most people do, it's just hair to me, but to someone else it could make a difference.
I remember back in 6th grade - about 6 or 7 years ago - and I watched this video and I donated my hair for charity. I still come back to this video, I will always cherish this video because of the nostalgia it gives me. :)

Your intent is authentic, beautiful, and rightoues. I want to tell you a little story though, about what you and many other folks have donated too.I suffered, from hair loss. I went to a well known hair salon that dealt especially with cancer patients who have lost hair due to chemo and such. The hairdresser sat me down, and brought out a very old fashioned wig.I politely asjed, for something a little more modern. She pulled out a long wig with bangs, I asked if I could style it she said "no, because it was synthetic".I asked her how much it is. Now please keep in mind this a place that is here to cater to cancer patients, she said to me the wig was 500$.... Why I tell you this is because your intention is noble, but this is all still a business with people who are solely out to make money.
My sweet daughter donated to them too, but they never gave us a response if they received it... it was sent by UPS?!? We didn't need a "gee, thanks", just confirmation of receipt!! Did you get one?!? Your hair is absolutely lovely! And the new " do " is gorgeous!!!!😘

Last March I donated my hair for cancer, I remember my hairdresser putting my hair into 4 long, thick braids then cutting them. I watched her cut them off and after they were all cut off I held the braids and I told my mom "I hope I make a little girl happy." After that I had a pixie cut and now I'm growing out my hair to donate again. :)

I luv my dark brown hair and its naturally thick with wave to it. But a few years ago I cut my hair off for my sister when she got cancer but I didn't have enough to give
