- Susan Sarandon presents the 2009 Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama to Mickey Rourke for his performance in "The Wrestler." Rourke accepts the award and gives a speech thanking all of those who helped him get back in the movie business, David Unger, president of ICM Jeff Berg, Director Darren Aronofsky, Peter Rice at Fox Searchlight, the cast of the movie, Axel Rose, and Brue Springstein. Other nominees include Leonardo DiCaprio, Frank Langella, Brad Pitt, and Sean Penn.

Funny how people kind of laughed at Rourke for thanking his dogs, then they realized how serious and sentimental he was, and everyone got so serious. Rourke's the man!

He had one Chihuahua that was almost 20 years old..... Dog traveled everywhere with him. I remember an interview one time he showed his dog's passport and the whole thing was full of stamps from different countries.

Yousuf Hasnain - I did get choked up. Because he's so right & I was at that point where all I had was my dog. Thanks for that Yousuf. I thought I was the only one that teared up when he said that.

It's true though and dogs keep you functioning cause they need you to care for them so you have to go out for walks etc. too pets are therapeutic.

At his best, Mickey Rourke is a brilliant actor.
Mickey is the real deal man !! In a world of fake people, especially in the acting world. It's so fucking refreshing to see a guy like Mickey Rourke who's genuine through and through.
He should get an Oscar, this guy is pure class, and one of the very last great actors

Mickey Rourke is magic on screen and he has true acting talent which gives him the ability to give totally honest performances that touch the heart and soul.
That had to be the most 'real' acceptance speech I've seen in years. Not just, "Oh, I'm so happy to be here. I'm going to drop some names and get off the stage." Really good stuff. Mickey Rourke is a legitimate human being, and I applaud that.
Met him briefly in Hollywood, CA. The most humble best human being I ever met ! May God bless him and may people remember him for being a true great actor and a genuine, kind person at all times.

Thing is, Rourke wasn't really acting. He was mostly being himself.
Absolutely agree the scene with his daughter were he says he was wrong and is now a lonely washed up old man is the finest piece of acting since i first saw shawshank redemption at the end with Morgan Freeman reading the letter under the rock! And i agree he seems very similar in real life to the part he played in wrestler!! Fine fine actor who stood his ground over Hollywood snobs that cost him many years of no work and loneliness! Hope to see him in future films!!

It does not matter if he plays the roles of a scary monster or an old wrestler .The dimension of his talent is much bigger that nay description and any summary of what he can or can not do .Never in my life I have seen a Hollywood actor show the human misery so fully and so intensely as Mickey did .He is a great human being for all he has been thru and the dignity he has !!! Mickey was blackballed by the Hollywood elite, the money people, the shakers and the movers. His talent is second to none. Everyone involved took a chance on him, many put their careers on the line. Interesting they needed a great song for the movie, out of money, Axel Rose of the famed band Guns and Roses GAVE them a huge hit, Sweet Child of Mine. The script was written for Mickey, the movie couldn’t have turned out any better and once again everyone wants a piece of Mickey Rourke. ( Also watch 9 1/2 Weeks )

When I first watched this years ago I heard almost nothing that Mickey said, but when he said he thanked all his dogs and the audience laughed, I knew he was telling the truth. Dog IS man's best friend, and I will never forget that Mickey saved them for last in his thank you speech. As it should be.

Damn. I've watched this movie at least 50 times. I never thought about it until Rourke mentions it here. Axl Rose gave the movie rights to Sweet Child O' Mine. The Wrestler theme music was written and performed by Slash. That was ten years before they reunited.
