Miami Beach street kids then worked in the hotel pools, surfed, spear fished and played in Flamingo Park baseball football basketball. As a teenager the activity was entertaining the tourist girls that came to try what they could not do at home. Every week one had a new girl. That was life in Miami Beach. As far as the Miami Beach high school girls, Mickey Rourke was nobody special with the girls because the school was mostly composed of Jewish girls and Mickey was an Irish Catholic. We didn't need the high school girls because we had a better looking tourist girl every week. It was one love after another. That was Mickeys' early life. In the end, what makes Mickey admirable to me, was his quality of never stepping back after a failure, but instead moving up. He failed as a baseball player (he was a very good player) and took up boxing, he failed at boxing, and he took up acting in plays in New York, he failed in New York and went to Hollywood and finally made it. Most men would have quit after the baseball failure and become forklift drivers talking the rest of their lives about how they could have been in the Major League had Coach Bertman not hated them (which he did not).

Not only that, he achieved a supremely redemptive and substantial film comeback with The Wrestler.
