Mickey Rourke is one of the greatest actors ever. Angel Heart, 9 1/2 Weeks, Year of the Dragon, Pope of Greenwich Village, Barfly, Johnny Handsome, Rumble Fish, Diner, The Wrestler and Homeboy are all excellent performances. He’s so underrated and I think he deserves more respect today. He’s been forgotten again.

I wouldn't be so quick to count him out just yet. He's one of the few actors with depth who can completely immerse himself in a role, in a character. And his inner beauty and vulnerability are what audiences fall in love with. Stay tuned. He's far from over!

The train left a long time ago! Rourke once said in an interview: "The times when I rebelled are over. That cost me my career. Today I only do what they want me to do."
But it is precisely those movies from his rebel days that have the rating: particularly valuable.

I knew Mickey, lived the same life as him in Miami Beach, till sometime after high school when he left town. Miami Beach street kids then worked in the hotel pools, surfed, spear fished and played in Flamingo Park baseball football basketball. As a teenager the activity was entertaining the tourist girls that came to try what they could not do at home. Every week one had a new girl. That was life in Miami Beach. As far as the Miami Beach high school girls, Mickey Rourke was nobody special with the girls because the school was mostly composed of Jewish girls and Mickey was an Irish Catholic. We didn't need the high school girls because we had a better looking tourist girl every week. It was one love after another. That was Mickeys' early life.
In the end, what makes Mickey admirable to me, was his quality of never stepping back after a failure, but instead moving up. He failed as a baseball player (he was a very good player) and took up boxing, he failed at boxing, and he took up acting in plays in New York, he failed in New York and went to Hollywood and finally made it. Most men would have quit after the baseball failure and become forklift drivers talking the rest of their lives about how they could have been in the Major League had Coach Bertman not hated them (which he did not).

Man.. this was a great commentary of your early times with Mickey. A very unique and thoughtful perspective. I hope someday he gets a chance to read these words. Very inspiring..
and it seems that drive to try what’s next after failure is what stands out most. Thank you brother 🙏

His legacy is that he was a man who learned early on that he is the only one who climb out of hell and reach for the stars. His legacy is that he is entirely self made. His legacy is that he lived most of his life on his terms. Through the highs and lows he never changed. If anything he learned that everyone is an enemy, so keep them close. I have nothing but respect for everything this man is. He's the kind of guy the world needs not on the screens but in real life. Men who will stand up when they fall. Men who won't reach for an enemies hand just because they are down. And if his face is his legacy, then his face shows us what a true hero looks like.

At the end of the day, Mickey’s a legend! One of the best actors ever, and - in my opinion - probably the most naturally talented ever. Has classic films and classic roles. And you can see he’s a genuine person, a real man who was in a place (in world actually) full of fake people and bullshit… the rest, you can say what you want… We all gon die eventually, let the man live his life and take it easy (dude has had it pretty rough since the beginning)…

Nice video production. This is one of my favorite video segments of the career of Mickey Rourke ever. You do a great job of detailing and analyzing his early career and ascent to stardom. And you do a very good job of detailing his numerous mistakes and missteps along the way. He had more than his share of mistakes as a Hollywood actor and avowed bad boy. However, your analysis falls short when you simply relegate him to the has-beens of Hollywood. The problem with your analysis, and it is very good, is that you fail to take into account the full measure of his great talent. That is, while you mention that had he died after the making of Angel Heart, he would have been as big as James Dean (agreed), he went on to make numerous more films. Not only that, he achieved a supremely redemptive and substantial film comeback with The Wrestler. His contribution to the field of acting is that while there are others who are arguably as talented amongst his contemporaries - Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, and others, Mickey Rourke's talent was very riveting. This is because he was as talented as those others and he was a matinee idol at the same time. He had those good looks coupled with his remarkable talent, and this made him very outstanding and notable. Thus, while his fall from grace was precipitous, his noted talent and comeback should not be overshadowed by some difficult years. This is an example of the life of a true artist. Take note.

He claim Harley Davidson & the marlboro man ruined him mentally, cause he felt like a sell out. But it's one of his best films. But to be fair he wasn't all that talent to begin with. He was mostly good in being noticeable in small side roles.

wtf, so many lies 😡mickey never thought his face was the "golden ticket". instead, already in 80s he made movies like barfly and homeboy with quite an altered image. he never owned the status of "sex symbol" either. he turned down many box office movies and made arthouse movies instead, what no one will do if money is what they are after. sure he had his demons, and he fought them as he could, but he never gave up and never lost his integrity. that's much more than most of us can say about ourselves. 🤐
