As much as I liked Penn in Milk, I really felt that Rourke deserved it for The Wrestler. It was such an awesome performance. If I recall, Rourke was the frontrunner but lost out because of the unpredictability of what we would say in his acceptance speech. It reminds me of the time when Denzel Washington (Training Day) beat Russell Crowe (the clear frontrunner for A Beautiful Mind) in the "black year" of the Oscars (the same year in which Sidney Poitier got the Honorary Award and Halle Berry won for Monster's Ball). Russell Crowe lost out apparently because he was furious that his BAFTA speech was cut short.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl I am sorry. I agree with Denzel's performance in Malcolm X getting snubbed, but when it comes to Hurricane, Nope. Kevin Spacey gave the best performance indeed that year in American Beauty.

He's such an amazing a actor, Milk and Mystic River are two of my faves by him. Its crazy how well he becomes each character he plays. Glad he won this award for Milk! Harvey was a brave and strong man who left the world too early, but what he did still echoes and plays a part in what's going on in our country today, Sean played him perfectly.

When I first heard that Sean Penn would be playing Harvey Milk, I thought to myself, Couldn't they find a gay actor to play the role, rather the a man who is terninally straight, like Mr. Penn. There are plenty of good gay actors out there, any one of whom I am sure would have jumped at the chance to play Milk. I went to see the film fully expecting to be disappointed. As it turns out, I walked out if the theater after the film feeling what a great movie. Congrats Sean, u pulled it off!
How interesting to have those distinguished actors coming out to Elmer Bernstein’s theme to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, one of the best orchestral pieces for a movie that I’ve ever heard in my life.
Overall Sean Penn killed it. Don't get me wrong, Mickey Rourke did a fantastic job, but Sean Penn was sooo good that I believe he sold his soul to be able to pull off that great performance lol...
Exactly lol... Sean Penn is straight, but he was able to pull off the difficult transformation, which is why he deserved to win. Mickey Rourke's transformation was difficult, but no where near Sean Penn's. I wouldn't say the greatest performance all time, that would probably have to go to Robert De Niro for his performance in Taxi Driver. Julia Robert's swept every small critics group awards as well for her performance in Erin Brockovich, but Ellen Burstyn clearly had a way better performance in Requiem for a Dream.
This was 100% Rourke's Oscar. Rourke gives a powerful performance in The Wrestler, meanwhile Penn's performance in Milk is almost caricature. The Oscars have never been a measure of quality, they're all about politics
Sean Penn was technically impressive, but he only won cos it was a movie about a real life politician who was also gay. That equals instant win right there. To this day, having seen The Wrestler many times, I'm still blown away by Rourke's performance. Never seen an actor so committed to such a depressing role. He's a true artist.
Curious if there was support for Rourke in Hollywood why didn't they, or Penn anyway who has clout, pull him back in? Now he's back and they support him......
And Sean Penn, I love you, and your acting was superb in Milk but Mickey Rourke definitely deserved that oscar in this heartbreaking, amazing and haunting performance as Randy 'The Ram' Robinson.
+Rafael C. I was a little bit shocked to find out, just now, that Mickey Rourke did NOT win an Oscar for The Wrestler. I share the same opinion as you, one of the best performances ever.
Sean Penn really did deserve this Oscar. I just watched Milk for the first time and it was excellent. I wasn't watching Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk. I was watching Harvey Milk. Great wonderful job.
Sean Penn IS BRILLIANT. He's had his problems and issues and his personal ups and downs, but he has ALWAYS been a BRILLIANT actor. As Harvey Milk, he made me understand who Harvey was as an individual and person, not just as an activist, and he played him with COMPLETE PERFECTION. The Oscar shouldn't have gone to ANYONE ELSE. Yes, Rourke was also AMAZING in The Wrestler, BUT, Sean's work in Milk was more profound BECAUSE of who Harvey Milk was.
In a year when most think two are deserving, you go with degree of difficulty. Sean Penn deserved the Oscar. They got it right this year, when Rourke was predicted to win. Penn and Anthony Hopkins in "The Father". Two of the most deserved winners ever, where they came into the night at slight underdogs.
Sean’s wife at the time Robin kissed him he didn’t kiss her when he got up but she reached over and kissed him on his way to the stage he never acknowledged her she kept smiling through his speech throwing him kisses classy lady
All of them are legendary, but I would of voted for the comeback kid, Mickey Rourke. The Wrestler was amazing. It’s one of those movies I could watch over and over again.
Sean Penn deserved to win I own "Milk" on DVD so I know for a fact that Sean's performance as Harvey Milk was Oscar worthy and that's what Sean Penn is the REAL winner of this award I'm also a gay man so you can understand why I'm glad that Sean Penn won.
+danielle burton Omar Soto is saying that when Rourke did the fighting like the wrestling, that Penn's saying that he was his friend meant that he should've gotten the nomination and won. Like back in the day. What's not to understand?
+danielle burton Ha! I was just messin' with you, man. I tried to write something as nonsensical/unintelligible as Omar Soto had written. How'd I do? :) And, to be fair, it seems possible that Soto simply has an ESL issue. Not really sure. Lastly, for the record, I was pullin' for Rourke that year. Definitely thought he deserved it...
I'd never heard of the brilliant Richard Jenkins until Cabin in the woods , step brothers and then Killing them softly but , of course he's been in movies for over 25 years - glad he's still doing his thing.

OMG I DIED WHEN ANTHONY HOPKINS APPEARED. HE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED ACTOR OF ALL TIME THANK GOD THE ACADEMY HAS REMINDED OF HIM AT LEAST ONCE..
In a year when most think two are deserving, you go with degree of difficulty. Sean Penn deserved the Oscar. They got it right this year, when Rourke was predicted to win. Penn and Anthony Hopkins in "The Father". Two of the most deserved winners ever, where they came into the night at slight underdogs.
sean penn is the best, pure talent
Being praised by Anthony hopkins is the best award ever.
Amen!
There's nobody like SEAN PENN is always been in my top 3 favorite actors...... He is brilliant, im VERY glad he WON 🎊🎊🎊
Sean’s wife at the time Robin kissed him he didn’t kiss her when he got up but she reached over and kissed him on his way to the stage he never acknowledged her she kept smiling through his speech throwing him kisses classy lady
sean penn's death scene in Milk is one of the most realistic acting death scenes ever
All of them are legendary, but I would of voted for the comeback kid, Mickey Rourke. The Wrestler was amazing. It’s one of those movies I could watch over and over again.
Sean Penn is my favourite actor of all time, he deserved it.
Great speech by Sean Penn.
OMG I love sir Anthony Hopkins & Robert De Niro. Best actors of all time along with Nicholson & Brando
Love his shoutout to Mickey Rourke at the end of his speech. That’s class.
Fact is, sean penn won this award cause of gay rights movement. Mickey should have won this award, and he is the REAL Winner of this award.
Douglas Roth
Exactly that is what I'm saying, sean penn only won this award cause he played a homosexual.
Michael Carranza He won the award because he's a great actor and he's performance in "Milk" was Oscar worthy,
*****
Just watch The Wrestler, one of the best movies of the year.
Douglas Roth
Nah, its all cause of 2008 gay rights movement bullshit, sean penn playing a homosexual won him the award.
I don't care what the haters say, Sean Penn deserved that Oscar. It is an iconic performance and he earned it fair and square.
I love you Sean!!!!!! You deserve it.
Penn played this part so incredibly, transforming himself into Harvey Milk so completely. He very deservedly won
Well he was once married to the biggest GAy Icon of the century.
Mickey Rourke deserved to win that Oscar.
Even sean Penn knows that Mickey Rourke should have won that oscar.
+angel omar soto what?
Jonathan Moreira I agree
Nah no chance, such a deserving win
Really good job Sean ! Big respect from France
I'd never heard of the brilliant Richard Jenkins until Cabin in the woods , step brothers and then Killing them softly but , of course he's been in movies for over 25 years - glad he's still doing his thing.
My favorite Oscar ceremony, ever!
Penn was excellent but should have had some class and mentioned the REAL Harvey Milk.
The guy didn't even thank or atleast mention his wife, robin white. No wonder they split in an year, haha
@@parandhamsai true..you took the words from my mouth !! neddless to say she was all over him..
It should have been a double win Penn and Rourke. The Wrestler was fantastic
I love how Mickey Rourke is in the thumbnail, like a subliminal message that they got the wrong one.
