RR Buildings Tool Trailer Custom Shelving Build Out Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 жов 2024
- I finally decided to take on my tool trailer build out and make myself some custom shelving to be better organized. I bought this Bravo Star work trailer about 7-8 years ago and have always known it could be much much for from an organizational storage perspective. This is Part 1 of the RR Buildings Tool Trailer Series so make sure you follow along if you want to see how it turns out. I am quite happy with it I think.
Also make sure you share this with a friend that might need a push to do this for their or organization.

Loved shots of screws pulling plywood together. Oddly satisfying
It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.
Tool storage in a trailer is a never ending battle!!!
“Where’s Greg at when I need him?” Put that on a t-shirt. Love your channel, great content, I enjoy your craftsmanship, attention to detail and humor.
that's another good one
Thanks for a great video and using safety equipment. Appreciate the effort and showing that safety is also a part of leisure projects.
I have never see a tool trailer set up even close to as nice as the one my brother built.
Your craftsmanship even on this trailer shelving unit is incredible. It’s so satisfying to watch even something like this fit perfect like it should. When I had an enclosed trailer for racing I would always think of how to keep things secure that you will still be using on a regular basis. Using the slope on the shelves for the cases is a nice touch.
Kyle, I’ve used Storm Door Turn Buttons, Zinc Plated Steel, in the past to secure items from sliding or opening. Along with the angle you put in the shelves these turn buttons fixed to the front edge of the shelves should be more than enough to keep your packouts in place while traveling and when you need the tool just turn them flush with the edge of the shelf and your good to go. You can get a 25pack for less than $10 on amazon or your local big box store should have these as well (hopefully yours has more items in stock than ours here in OH). Keep the great videos coming really enjoy each one. Thanks for sharing
Gentle left hand turns. 👍
You have the right idea about slowing down. Plan ahead. 37 turns into 42 as I am. I'm building myself a Long ass rambler. Loft yes, and basest, storage and mech. But no stairs for daily use. Plan ahead.
All shelf's need just a 1 inch rim so they don't fall out. Can be aluminium. Thanks Kyle for this video. 👍😁
I have been using a quarter inch thick strip around my boxes to keep them in place, none have jumped out in the last 14 years.
@@mrsandless13625 Great that it works! 👍😁
Paint it black, would look really awesome with the Milwuakee theme going on!
Yes I agree
Ok since you asked... lightweight plywood, battery charging station, use the wall space and ditch the kiddie wallpaper, vertical full wall slot behind shelves for carrying sheet goods with long deep cubbies for levels and stadia etc.
Kyle this is sick. Please do an amazing battery wall. Batteries are our future I love them
"Going to get plywood....isn't going to be cheap"
I felt that one for sure.
Nice to hear your thought process
I loved that build montage at the end. So clean. Watched it twice before I finished the video.
Great build ideas. I’m excited for more. 37 not dead. Priceless
I really like your videos. Organized and well thought out. I got back in to construction at 50 yrs old and so far I’m learning new things from you guys. I found your video because we have to do a standing seam roof and needed to get some tips. Really like how you make the job easier with lifts and machines. Keep them coming.
Thank you for these videos as a young carpenter definitely taking notes every video 👍
My advice to stain it or a coat of danish oil or similar. The amount that makes a project look professional or finished versus bare plywood is incredible. And customers see that trailer and it’s insides at every job.
Hi Kyle!
Yes it’s great to do cabinetry , custom finish and every once in a while a little framing.
I am 62 did not become a production carpenter until 55 (I knew it was raised around it however my 1st career set me up to transition into my dream job).
Your right your young and stout keep going and one day you can start that custom shop! You hv the mind for it, you enjoy math (a unquestionable skill a good carpenter must hv).
Plus you see things before they are built !
You hv the shop! You need a 20” plus planer, 10-12 “ jointer and 3hp cabinet saw. The rest you hv!
Set it up over time and start making customer pieces? Sideboards? Islands? Custom (huge) locking tables for those nice post frame buildings?
Work benches ect.,.
I don’t do full kitchens, although lots of money in them?
I don’t like the pressure when doing kitchens?
Just a thought?
Thk u for the content Kyle!
God Bless you & yours
Agreed, a better idea than what was there before. Love the pocket screw fasteners idea. And yes, when building cabinets from plywood, you need the higher grade, I believe they call them "plugged" as they have less voids between the layers and any blems are plugged and filled on both sides. Last thing you need is a fastener connecting to air under the layers of wood. Looks like a Milwaukee tool store !
I’m happy to see a smart man wearing safety glasses! I’m 20 years old and have been working construction for 5 years, and due to negligence I’ve already got a scar on my cornea from flying debris off saws.
When planning something, I use Sketchup.
A couple days ago, I was asked to build a simple (totally not fancy) cabinet to support an aquarium. Like a bookcase with 1 shelf. Literally 5 pieces of ¾" OSB (top, shelf, bottom, & sides) & 1 piece of ½" OSB siding (the back, show side in). All materials I already had on hand thanks to some construction dumpster diving I did a few years back. A few minutes in Sketchup, and I knew just how to go about building it.
Kyle, wether for sponsorship or safety, it's great to see you wearing your PPE! You are an influencer and a role model regardless if you want to be or not. The days of mocking safety Sally's should be long behind us. We've seen recently some dame good tradesmen have some horrific accidents. Some could have been prevented with PPE. Thanks for the vids, keep 'me coming.
Sand, prime & Paint it with semi gloss black and red. To match the pack outs, use a sheet of chrome diamond plate on the end flat surface on the trailer door sides to protect it from impacts. Then rubber utility carpet on the floors incase it rains for nonskid. Awesome job big dog.
I'm a contractor in a small town in Quebec, Canada. Our 3/4" Ply is up to $109 CDN per sheet. I don't see it going down any time soon. Love the videos and the information. Keep them coming.
Installation driver for the win it can do so many things
I get such tool envy everytime I watch your content
Nice trailer set up. My brother in law did something like this years ago to a econoline van we used to install tv antennas and rotors. We could go to the van and knew right where to look for tools and hardware. Looking forward to seeing the next video. Thanks.
Some strong magnets attached to the back of the pack out would be cool. Not sure if they stick directly to the side of the trailer but if not, you could add a metal strip against the back.
Kyle thank you so much for these videos brother!!! You definitely one of my motivations in this industry!! Thank you!
I'm in the process of reorganizing my work shop in the basement. I've accumulated so many more tools and such over the last 10 years that it has become a disorganized mess. Like what you have done to your trailer and looking forward to part two.
You are at the center of the best-value-per-square-foot residential home construction approach in the country right now I think. A proper installation of spray-foamed to the ceiling trusses, in a residential post-frame build, would be interesting to see. According to Spray Jones, full top-to-bottom closed-cell spray is best for post-frame as it works reliably for years and years. It would be interesting to understand the timing of wiring, heating / air-conditioning, spraying, outside air ventilation, etc. - for that system. As well:
How would metal roof systems be affected by spray-foam to the ceiling? There would be no need to blow in 20-inches of insulation to just sit on the ceiling and make maintenance or repairs painful.
Could we use cheaper, quicker to install, perforated sheeting on the roof with that system?
Would you still need a wrap - or would foaming directly onto metal sheeting prevent condensation inside the building?
Maybe there is a hybrid sweet-spot with wrap on the walls - and then spray directly on the installed roof sheets - is best?
How does spray to the ceiling impact price - for insulation - and then for the whole construction installation?
Looks great. For those watching keep in mind the weight carrying capacity of your trailer.
not just weight capacity but also balance
Looking great!
Excellent work, Kyle! Missed Greg singing in the background. Trailer is very organized as well and it is mandatory for the tools to be put away correctly EVERY TIME.
Organize & make your self more efficient!! Great shelving system, I use Milwaukee tools and happy that I went that route. Great vlog and keep em coming....
Good work just like the barns you build.
I did a mission trip with Samaritans Purse rebuilding homes in Texas.....the work crews had some amazingly organized trailers.
Awesome Job!
Maybe do a nice slim label in line with the shelf to say what goes in each and dont have to open multiple packouts to find the tool you need... Looks great!
Kyle & Greg may know what’s in all those near-identical red boxes (I doubt it, especially at the end of a long cold day) but anyone brought in to help on a big job will be lost.
I agree, but probably just label the Pack Out itself with the contents, and then maybe a case number to tell you which shelf bin it goes on. Someone who really knows their tools will easily remember which case number has which tools in it, and then the fine print will be there for contents confirmation.
Awesome, we are working out of a van. I definitely agree with your thoughts on organized is the key to production plus keeping track of tools along with care. Cheers looking forward next video.
Kyle, well planned and well made great job well done sure wish I had a place big enough for a shop like yours to work and tinker in.
Packout is awesome
Looks awesome. Love the detail
I've been working on my shop organization for 3+ years currently sanding and repainting old filing cabinets for tool and materials storage
Watching this even though I’m at work
"I'm 37, I ain't dead yet" should be a t-shirt. Nice trailer setup, Kyle!
haha maybe
“Skills to pay the bills”. That needs to be on a shirt! Awesome build bud!
Enjoyed watching the Trailer Set Up Kyle. 👌
been looking forward to this series
Thanks hope I do it justice
I like the mixup of content today. Love this channel!
You might get a Kreg tool to connect your sheets together. Then I look up and your using one on some of it. Don't know why not on the complete shelves. The shelf slides are what kicks my tush. Looks awesome, like what you are doing.
Great lookin' project Kyle! With ALL those pack-out cases you'll have to come up with some kind of color coded sticker for the front of the boxes to know which pack-out is for what type tool... Green for drills? Yellow for staplers? Blue for? Orange? etc... Otherwise it'd suck having to go through 10+ pack-out boxes to find the home for every tool. Thanks for the video!!!
Great looking setup.
Can’t wait to see that packout first aid kit installed. Looking great as always Kyle
Take a drink every time Kyle says “pack-out .
Kyle, if you need to secure those cubbies, here's an idea: attach a piece of angle at the bottom of a column. Use a bolt through an oversized hole to act as a pivot point. Notch the other end of the angle to align with a bolt at the top of the column diagonal to the bottom attachment. Use a wing nut to secure it while underway.
Hey Kyle, try Snaploc since you have the E-track on that wall. They make single connecters that have a ring and you can use their s-hook cam straps. I use this system on my box truck I use as a moving service. It’s affordable and makes my day easier. Also check out their dollies. Would help you move material around your job sites a lot easier. Thanks for the great content.
Nice build, Kyle. Glad you addressed the likely need to secure the containers in the cubicles. I was thinking bungee cords might provide an easy solution if it becomes necessary. Affix one end to the top of the shelf, and stretch across the front of each cubicle.
You could use a black tarp bungee cord take hook off of one end use cab screw or some kind of screw on bottom through hook hole. Drill hole on top so you can pull mounted bungee from bottom and hook on to top hole. I did that with my 3/4 plywood shelving for all my Milwaukee fastener cases.
This is my favorite video of yours! Such a nice showing of all the tools in use. Nice editing and music also! Greeting from the Netherlands.
Very nice, looks good!!
Gregg is at home relaxing!
I did the exact same thing with the blue tape on the lid of the packout! But then I switched the putting it on the metal part of the latches so you can see it when they are stacked
Great job on your shelves
Norm Abram was watching and it was good. There is no more important rule than to wear (these, and point at them) safety glasses !
I agree with other comments. It looks great, but they could slide out while on the road. It looks like you have room for a strip of wood along the bottom of each shelf and still have space to get containers out.
Since its screwed together, you could increase the slope angle of shelves; change from 5 degrees to 10 or even 15. If so, you may need to increase spacing on some shelves.
yes it is very easy to change if need be
@@RRBuildings
Maybe just add a 1 inch wooden stop across the front of each shelf. Then you could label it for that shelf's contents.
keep up the great work...
This is about how my recent trailer build went. Build something and then realize you forgot to cut or did something wrong lol. Thanks for the insight Kyle. BTW your video on the isotunes free led me to purchase them, best earbuds I've had yet.
I also bought them because of Kyle, theyve been great for me as well, had them for about 3 months.
Drill a hole and run some bungee cords down the middle to prevent the boxes from falling out. Easy, cheap, and effective!
Maybe some hooks on the end panels to store things like harnesses so they don't get tangled, hold in place with a bungee across them if needed.
A hinged strip might be the answer to hold cases in place if it becomes a problem (basically a 2" wide door)
I would build a 6" vertical box on the end with a pull out side say from a closet organizer system for all the harnesses to hand on.
Its looking great, I really need to get back to mine and finish it.
If the pack outs slide, put 2 inches of rubber mat at the front of the storage space, that should create enough friction to stop it moving but still make it easy to pull out the pack outs.
Good job !!
looks awesome, love tool related videos
Solid ideas and content! Top notch man 👍
I put a small hinge and a shoddy weld metal square tube and a slide clasp to hold it close. Keeps the boxes in
You should make places on the other side that goes down the back for nail guns, it could have a small open top box with 5 sides, it means you always no where they are and keeps them nice and tidy
Awesome trailer, Ron Paulk also has some great ideas you might be able to use
Enjoyed the show
Great series Kyle!!
Keep up the good work!!!
💪👍💪
mmm that juicy milwaukee b-roll
Bunny cords across the lowers part of each cubbie to stop things from jumping out while transporting, but easily bend out of the way when you grab or put things away.
Looks great! Wish I saw this sooner before i built a peg board in my garage 🤣
well Kyle, we needed some accommodation, 💯👍
Don’t forget the Marine Corps sticker my favorite Uurah!
Looks great!
Great vid. Your footage is way to flash for a build channel. Haha. Good to see some blue tools hiding in the packouts. Just like mine.
You’ll love the 48tools battery holders that are waiting to go up. 👍
Staying organized at the end of the day is definitely hard. Easy to throw everything back in the truck
It’s amazing ❤️
Nice job, mate!
Nice video. Assuming you occasionally have an NFG running to grab tools, you might consider labeling each of your pack out boxes and a corresponding letter or number for the spot it goes in your system. It’s a lot easier to say hey NFG bring me box A, then they have NFG going thru each red box looking for say a left-handed hammer.
Because of this channel, I only use GRK screws for my woodworking haha
Good call
yo my man a true handyman
bungies horizontal across the openings stops them from easily sliding off but is just a tug up/down to pull a "Packout" from the shelves
Nice job, i really like the stickers in your trailer. Stay safe
"If you don't have organization, you can't be organized". Nice video
