As you say, WOA stands as one of the most satisfying live albums of the classic era, right up there with Frampton. It came at a time when the Stones' Love You Live and Bowie's David Live were rather middling efforts.

I'll always have a soft spot for Wings Over America. At 16 it was my very first concert and I'll always feel chills when I remember the opening notes of Venus and Mars. As far as Back to the Egg, I believe if he wouldve jettisoned the two medleys and included Goodnight Tonight and it's B side, Daytime Nightime Suffering, the album would have sold better.

I couldn't agree more with you, Michael. I can't quibble about your rankings. One side note, I was so disappointed in London Town when it came out in 1978. After the heady days of '75-'76, London Town seemed like a wet noodle. I guess I wanted Paul to rock out (which he did a year later with Back to the Egg). The passage of time has helped my appreciation of London Town. I don't know if it aged well or I got more mellow with age.

Paul did a live radio show when the album came out, highlighting the album and his career with the Wings, The show was great and inspiring so I got up during the show and drove to a Tower Records on PCH. I grabbed my copy and I stood in line with 4 other people also buying the album. Cool video Michael! This is probably the closest I've come to agreeing with a Paul and Wings top ten. I was especially glad to see you rate Back to the Egg and London Town higher than many do. But my favorite McCartney album of all time has always been Ram.

  • @robertfmorton
    @robertfmorton Рік тому +3

Hey, Michael. Rob from the UK here again. This video has triggered some memories for me. I was a 16 year old kid in Liverpool when the Beatles first landed from outer space. Of course, I was a fan from the start. The first time I heard Paul count in 1,2,3,4 on the first track of the 'Please, Please Me' album, I was hooked. Long story short, I bought every album on its release. Like every other fan, I was devastated when they broke up. Dutifully, I bought their first solo albums. I was very disappointed in Paul's first album, 'McCartney', but I did like 'Ram'. I was more inclined towards the Lennon and Harrison albums. In a sense, that was it as far as my interest in McCartney was concerned. Like many other Beatle 'purists', I was dismissiveof McCartney's output. 'Band on the Run' sparked a great deal of interest, but I never followed it up. Then my only connection with Wings was the singles on the radio. I felt that these were a bit 'poppy' for me. 'Mull of Kintyre' was played constantly on UK radio and I think we were all sick of it. Now...when I'm in my late sixties, I rekindle my interest in my old vinyl and start listening to the Beatles again. McCartney releases an album of his back catalogue, 'Pure McCartney'. I'm interested in sounding it out but opted for the magnificent 'Wingspan' album. This is when I realised how wrong I'd been about Wings for all these years. Then I find that my wife has an old copy of 'Venus and Mars'. My God, what a revelation. I'm still not sure whether I like it better than BOTR. Now, I'm finally hooked on McCartney and Wings. I started to pick up vinyl copies of McCartney and Wings albums and it's like the scales fell from my eyes. What a genius this man is! I think that I'm in general agreement with your choices of Wings albums. 'Wings Over America' is among my favourite live albums. 'Back To The Egg' is vastly underrated IMHO. I sometimes chide myself for ignoring McCartney and Wings for all those years but then again, what a wonderful experience I have had in rediscovering my hero. Bit of a lo g one, sorry. Love your posts. Keep it up. 😊😊

You know Rob, I have a good friend who is a Beatles fan, yet didn’t really buy McCartney’s albums over the years, yet as he aged about ten years ago he too started catching up on Paul’s back catalogue!
It’s never too late, and I kinda envy you after all these years, finding his gems for the first time! Oh to rediscover him! Sigh!!!❤❤❤

What a fun video. It's very cool hearing from an actual McCartney fan with a different take on the albums. I've tried to rank the Wings stuff. In fact, when I saw the title of your video I tried to do an impromptu ranking to see how close it came to yours. LOL. It didn't.
I'm glad SOMEONE has the balls to call out the medley on Red Rose Speedway. Some of my favorite tracks are on that album but it just fizzles out.
And funnily, I listened to Speed of Sound just two days ago at the gym. I loved it when it came out back in 76. But the other day I actually did say to myself how much better it would have been without the others all getting their chance at the lead microphone.
Regarding the Wings Over America. Before the album came out, in Daytona Beach where I lived, a local radio station simulcast his concert at the Forum in Los Angeles.
I recorded it on my Radio Shack stereo 8-track... Honestly, I thought it was crap. I'm sure it had a lot to do with the way it was being broadcast. The singing was so out of tune and the hooting and hollering between songs just went on and on and on.
I was/AM a HUGE Wings fan, in all of the incarnations so when I heard the concert I was terribly disillusioned.
The tape survived for decades, it's long lost now and I really regret not taking care of it.
ANYWAY, my girlfriend bought me the live album and when I played it I couldn't believe how good it was. I knew nothing about production, post production or any of that. I wore out my first vinyl copy of that album.
Of course, many decades later I learned that Paul actually did more than just a little post production, even some of the vocal tracks were redone in studio to make up for the bad vocals that were live.
    It's STILL a great album.
One last point, THANK YOU for putting Venus and Mars up at number 2. It's a highly underrated disc, even by McCartney fans. It's my default favorite. Band On The Run is a masterpiece, of course but I default to Venus And Mars when I want a good listen.
    Great job as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd pretty much agree with your ranking but I have to say I love One More Kiss. Back to the Egg had some cool rockers especially Old Siam, Sir. I like side one of Red Rose Speedway but side two Paul loses me a bit. Wings at the Speed of Sound is one of the weaker links in the chain of Wings albums but boy it had two great singles. While Cook of the House should have not been on the album, I still like it and it would have made a cool b-side. I just felt that after Band On The Run and Venus and Mars, the Wings album had a business as usual and that Paul was capable of better work. When Wings broke up and the aftermath of Lennon's tragic death came Tug of War one of Paul's best solo albums. The Wings albums were fun and I enjoyed them all to various degrees.

I love seeing these lists. It's fascinating to see what other fans think!
My list is as follows (no live album):
    1. London Town (I love everything about this album)
    2. Back To The Egg (Ditto)
    3. Venus And Mars (Ditto and i LOVE the over compressed production as it reminds me so much of 1975.
    4. Red Rose Speedway (Except for "Loup", I LOVE this album all the way through!)
    5. Band On The Run (Overrated album. Why? Because the first three songs on side two drag it down. Capitol was smart to add "Helen Wheels". "1985" is a tour de force!)
    6. Wild Life (Good little chunky album!)
    7. Wings At The Speed Of Sound (To understand why this is last, just listen to your own commentary on it. You nailed it!)
I have to mention that i love everything about "Girls School" but, along with it's phenomenal "A" side, "Mull Of Kintyre", it WAS released in the USA. Problem is, the silly disco / KISS / punk obsessed American listeners of 1977 had no clue (nor cared) what a "mull" nor a "kintyre" was, plus, the song is a waltz which prompted them all to say "Duuuuuuuh.......what's dat?!". US radio stations decided to flip the single and plug "Girls School" and it reached #33. It's my all time favorite McCartney single and most certainly deserved a much better fate. Also, the video for "Mull Of Kintyre" is my all time favorite of any promotional film, ever.
And......."Sally G" has NOTHING to do with "London Town"!
I'm loving your videos! Keep 'em coming!

Great ranking, IMO where RAM seems to be Overappraised, Back To The Egg is underappreciated & Overlooked, -From my point of listening the problem with Back To The Egg is the sequencing and also Paul should have included the singles like Daytime Nightime Suffering and Goodnight Tonight to have been part of the album.

Hey Michael! A few years back I delved deeply into the 1970-79 music by Sir Paul. I'm pretty sure I like One More Kiss more than you do but if you think it's a little on the cheesy side I'll go with that. I'm totally with you on the list. I was very curious where Back to the Egg, which i really dig, would come in. No problem with London Town inching ahead of it. I'm Carrying may be the most underrated song he ever made. 9, Holly Days (basically a Paul McCartney/Wings album/project credited to the albums lead singer Denny Laine)
    8, Wild Life
7, Wings At The Speed Of Sound
    6, Red Rose Speedway
    5, London Town
4, McGear- Mike "McGear" McCartney (backed by Paul, Linda, Denny L and Jimmy on every track, Denny S. on one track. Paul produced and co- wrote most of the songs on the album)
    3, Venus And Mars
2, Back To The Egg (like McCartney and Ram, an album that was canned by the critics when released, but receives lots of love from the modern day critics)

I agree with your lowest picks, but I would put Venus and Mars lower too because some of it sounds a bit dated. Having said that, Call Me Back Again, Listen to What the Man Said and Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People is a great three track finale to the album. Let me begin by stating that George Harrison once said that “I’m Carrying” was his favorite Paul solo song. As i said somewhere else before, if you want to put Wings as band in the Rockhall, don’t you think Traveling Wilburys should be in there too?? i always considered them a band just as well as Wings. Sure they only had 2 albums (why they called the thier 2nd album “Volume 3” is anyone’s guess🤷 i think it had something to do with thier reaction to Roy Orbison’s untimely death but that’s just my guess) But still they acted and sounded like a real band that could’ve went on for years if weren’t for the tragic early loss of one of thier members… i strongly believed if Roy would’ve lived they would’ve had at least a 5 album discography. They would’ve had as much hits as Wings.

As a fan of big bands all the live albums were 'live'. No post production due to 1) prohibitive costs and 2) superior musicianship. Maybe the last point is controversial but i hardly ever heard mistakes when attending big band concerts but plenty within the live rock music arena. Hence i never buy live rock albums as they were inevitably 'tinkered' with so not authentic.
