Hello Tone, the story of the football match on Christmas day as in Pipes of peace is in fact true. Troops in the French trenches stopped on Christmas day played football shared a drink and it all kicked off again in the morning.

And the fact that it kicked off again on Boxing Day is what makes it hard for me to believe . It's possible I guess but probably unlikely

Fun to see your ranking, Tone. I never reach for Electric Arguments; there are two or three songs I love but it just never occurs to me to put it on. It's good, but perhaps it has been a bit overpraised. I like Egypt Station a lot, it would be much higher on my list. But the difference in our rankings that gave me a good laugh was Run Devil Run. Not only do I love that album, but No Other Baby is my favorite track on it - in fact, it's probably my favorite cover song Paul did as a solo artist. I find the song very emotional, and the solo is great. I even hunted down the jukebox 45 a while back because I love the song so much! Looking forward to part 2.

    McCartney Album Ranking
I was a teen in the 1980s and this is where I began listening to Paul McCartney. It was during the Pipes of Peace period or the big hype surrounding the video play of “Say Say Say” at the time on MTV.
I will preface that my list is truly based on how much I would listen to a particular album. So there is no dislike to any album listed below. To be honest, there are literally 5 McCartney albums I goto frequently.
The countdown for me and me only, your mileage may vary and that is okay as well.
    Counting down:
    27 - Choba B CCCP
    26 - Press to Play
25 - Kisses on the Bottom
    24 - Driving Rain
    23 - Run Devil Run
22 - Back to the Egg
    21 - London Town
20 - Give My Regards to Broad Street
    19 - Electric Arguments
    18 - Wild Life
    17 - Red Rose Speedway
    16 - Off the Ground

Its been on my mind since i started ha ha! But glad to see you took the 'plunge' man!! Looking forward to this.....i did rank Wings albums, but the main solo back catalogue - i never include 'compilations' but yeah id rank 'kisses on the bottom' last then..... i would have 'pipes of peace' last out of his studio albums......yet, that said, it has 5 great songs on 'sweetest little show' love it....'so bad' beautiful....ive always had a keen dislike for 'average person' - 'McCartney II' would be in my top 3 ha ha. daft, fun, goofy, its..... all a bit odd, and brilliant! 'Electric arguments' is too good for words. 'Egypt station' like you, i was impressed when it came out but i dont reach for it too often. I like several of the songs but it could have been trimmed to a strong 10 track album i reckon.

Hats off Tone for taking on this intimidating task. I must admit I have never actually attempted it myself - I can probably pick my top 10 easily enough, then I have a 14 way tie for number 11 and then an easy 25-27 😂
For a long time I couldn’t bring myself to listen to Pipes of Peace. I remember buying it on release as a 15 yo and thinking I could never play this with my mates. But a few weeks ago I had it on repeat in the car and found myself quite enjoying it. I did wonder about “dust bin lid” which is highlighted in every criticism of the album (and Paul’s songwriting in general) I’ve ever heard. I never really had a major issue with it - down here we use “tin lids” the same way.
As for your ranking, not a lot to argue with. Off the Ground would be higher for me, although I do think some of the b-sides are stronger than some of what made the album.
Driving Rain would be in the bottom half of my list. It’s a bit like Egypt Station and Electric Arguments for me - some excellent moments, but ultimately too long and self indulgent to keep my attention.
Good to see some love for Wildlife.
Looking forward to the second half and seeing how you separate 15-5 in particular.
    Cheers mate

      @beatleytonesbeatleschannel  3 місяці тому +1

Cheers Jason. Ive always thoughts that PoP is a very listenable album if not one that is filled with great songs - sometimes albums are a bit like that. This ranking has proved to be much harder than I thought it would be when I started to compile my list and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts . I go a little in and out with Off the Ground. Sometimes I think its a much better album than I thought the last time I played it but agree about the stuff that was on the CD singles as b sides or whatnot.

We’ll all have different orders but I think most people’s top tens would share at least five titles. I understand your reason for putting the covers at the bottom. Though I really like Run Devil Run. I like Wild Life but I’d rank McCartney higher. And I find Off The Ground a more consistent album than Flowers which has some great songs but too many so so moments for me. Looking forward to part 2. I’m predicting a shocker at the end when Driving Rain gets the top spot!

Great videos! I haven't heard his albums beyond the first 6 (with a couple exceptions), yet. However I must say that (IMO), McCartney (1) brilliant album should be a lot higher up on the list, or at least should not be overlooked. It's a great album, and this 1st album after the Beatles breakup is a must-have in anyone's McCartney collection! It's #1 on my list of about 10 of his albums that I've heard, so far. I love "My Love" too, but anyway McCartney (1) imo seems to be his most Beatle-like album. Some people have called it "low fi" maybe because there's a raw nature to it. However, listen again and you might catch some subtleties that you might have missed before.

I must admit Ive never really thought of McCartney 1 as being his most beatlesque album mainly because there are so many underdeveloped songs on it and it is pretty low-fi. Wings Over America is a killer live album; London Town and Speed of Sound are both very enjoyable but low-key albums; so my ranking is #1- Venus #2 - BOTR #3 - WOR #4 - SOS #5 - London #6 - Red Rose Speedway #7- Back to the Egg #8 - Wildlife.

Yes McCartney was a hard one to place. It's a mixed bag with some great songs and some throwaways . A lot of people like it for its homemade feel and that's something that Im not so keen on - a bit lo-fi. Teddy Boy is a song that Ive never really taken to but I do like some of the experimental stuff like Oo You and Momma miss America. Getting these albums in order is harder than I first thought when I started making my list and there are just other albums I like more

Hello Tony! Enjoyed your ranking, don’t agree at all. At all!!! Just joking 🎉. Imo one SHOULD include The Fireman albums. I’d include compilations AND live albums. What a body of work!
It’s difficult to rank albums when you love them all, more or less or in some way. It is also difficult to separate FAVORITE albums from CLASSIC ones. It also depends on what kind of listening you are after, for me there are moments when McCartney2 is the best album to listen to (and the 2-Lp version as well). So it’s difficult. And fun.
As for me, I’d have ES at the bottom. Stuff like VM and Speed Sound would never made into top 15, both being great albums.
Then of course, you have the nostalgia factor, how to weight in that into that equation? My list would differ if it was a recommandation for beginners or just my personal ranking.
But very fun to watch, and I, as they say, can’t wait for the part II (but I have to).
But as for 27 through 16, I’d probably have albums like McCartney and McCartney3; Kisses, Rrs and LT; Fireman.
I got to say I’m really impressed with what he’s done 1997 through 2013, maybe all of those albums are top 15 for me.
Keep on rockin’ and doing your great comments in your videos! Thanx💐🙏

Thanks very much, Im glad you are enjoying the ranking. Yes it's much more tricky to do than I thought when I first started compiling my list. And of course, as you suggest , everyone's list is personal to them and they have their own reasons for placing albums where they do. I also think that fatigue can play a part in this - that album that you've heard just one time too many even though it's a classic ! I didnt include the first 2 fireman albums because I find it difficult to compare ambient music with pop/rock . You will find a ranking video for Pauls compilation albums and a min-series ranking all his live albums on the channel if you want to watch them but so that is why these aren't included. cheers

Liking your rankings, but as you say mine would be different. The two albums of covers Run Devil Run and the Russian Album I do love, but I grew up with my Dad playing that stuff in our house, but I know what you're saying about it getting a bit samey, but without it Pop would've been so different, because we'd never have had the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, Kinks e.t.c. Broad St would be my no 27, aside from No More Lonely Night's it just didn't do it for me, when Ringo said no to Paul about re recording Hey Jude and I'll Get You, that speaks volumes. All three McCartney solo records I do love, but I will concede I do prefer the live version of Coming up to that on the album. Maybe I'm Amazed is worth the price of admission alone for McCartney. Wild Life, along with Ram, to me make what turned out to be the blueprint for indie pop some twenty years later. I can't really comment on Kisses On The Bottom as I never bought it and so have never heard it. Looking forward to part two, with some high placings for some of my faves such as Back To The Egg, London Town, Band On The Run, Ram, Venus And Mars, and Speed Of Sound.

Wild Life is Paul McCartney`s absolute worst album for me.. There`s hardly a single good song on there, and Paul`s vocals are not up to standard. McCartney II" is also pretty awful. Those are the only two McCartney that i really heavily dislike. The others have a least a couple of really great tracks.
"McCartney II" has got "Coming Up" which is a killer song while McCartney aII is all crap from start to finish. My top 5 Paul McCartney album list would be 1. Ram, 2. Band on the run, 3. Tug of war", 4. "Flaming pie" 5. "Chaos and creation in the back yard.
"Kisses on the bottom" is probably his most boring album. "My Valentine" is a superb song though. I was a bit surprised to see you put Paul`s latest solo albums on your top bottom list. I think both "Egypt Station" and "McCartney III" are strong macca albums.
My only problem with those two albums is that his beautiful voice is gone. But the songs are very good. "I don`t know" from "Egypt Station" is one of the best tracks he has written for years.

Definitely agree about I dont know but most of ES is very mediocre. McCartney III I like a lot but there are others I like more that is why these albums are in the bottom half. Something has to occupy those bottom places.

@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel I haven`t listened to "Egypt Station" for years, but i used to think it was alright. And i fell in love with "I don`t know" Can you imagine how good that would have sounded if he had recorded it while he still had his fantastic voice? 2016 is the first year i noticed that his voice was gone.
I had seen him have his hits and misses before that, but 2016 was the first year i noticed he couldn`t sing really well anymore. I saw him in 2004, and he sounded fantastic. His voice was really strong, and he nailed the higher notes. But what can you expect.
He is getting older. I saw his Glastonbury show a couple of years ago, and he was amazing. His singing was even quite qood. The singing is a problem on his recent albums. He is still a very good songwriter, but i he is not a very good performer. That is probably why i find it a bit difficult to listen to his more recent albums, all though i like them.
I have two Macca albums that i really hate, and that`s "Wild life" and "McCartney II". And then there`s about five McCartney album i REALLY loves, like "Ram" "Band on the run" "Tug of war" etc. The albums in between is hard for me to rank, since they`re kind of good, but not excellent like the ones i mentioned.
"Flaming Pie" "Chaos and creation" "Memory almost full" and "New" are also quite impressive albums. "New" is the last album where he sounded really good vocally. "Tug of war" is the album where his vocals are completely outstanding. But he was working with George Martin on that, so i`m not surprised that the production is fantastic.

@@yellyman5483 There is an AI version out there with Paul's young man's voice and it dies sound great but of course it's fake. Im not sure how he pulled off that Glastonbury performance because performances on the US Got Back tour that proceeded it were very shaky. But he was excellent that night. I think you start to hear the deterioration in his voice on Driving rain. his voice is still good on that album but you can tell its lost a little bit. Im still fighting the corner for Wild Life - its an album that has great feel

@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel I have tried to give "Wild life" a chance so many times, but it does not work for me. "Tomorrow" is a good Paul song, but the performance from Wings including Paul is not good enough.
"Wild life" could have worked if there had been better production and more focus. Some of the songs are good enough, but i saw that he said in an interview that most of the album was one take versions.
The title track "Wild life" is very good live, but sounds mediocre on the record, because Paul in the early days had a habit of rushing through the albums.
"Big barn bed" is a whole different song live compared to the version from "Red rose speedway" The official version is a boring track. The live version kicks ass.
"Mary has a little lamb" is another example where the live version is better than the recorded version.
Paul peaked vocally in the 70`s, but it didn`t always show on his records because he rushed them.
"Ram" and "Band on the run" are two examples of Paul getting it 100% right. He sings like an angel, it`s well produced, and the material is fantastic.
The same goes with "Tug of war" There are hardly any fillers on those albums. And he sounds fantastic vocally.
As far as Glastonbury goes i think he had a very good night that night. I`ve seen him pull himself together on other occasions and sing very well in a middle of a bad tour, but it gets rarer and rarer.
Maybe he should do the same thing as Elton John did. Do a final world tour, and retire as a live artist. It would make him a ton of money. Elton John almost passed the $1 billion mark on his farewell tour.

@@yellyman5483 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I dont necessarily agree with everything you say but we all hear things differently. Wild Life was purposely recorded quickly and underdeveloped because he heard that Dylan (I think) had recorded an album that way and it represented a different approach to that taken with Ram which took a long time to record. I just really like the live feel of that album even though none of the songs are particularly amazing. I cant imagine there will ever be a time when Paul will announce a farewell tour. I think he will just stop when he stops without any fuss.

Hi Beatley Tone, just got around to watching this video. I agree with you choices here. Paul just should have put the original versions of songs on No More Lonely Nights.
I think the song Wild Life goes on way too long. But side 2 of Wild Life is better than side 1 imop.
