I can’t thank you enough for your comment and hope I see more of you on my channel. I wouldn’t mind doing one of those if I had the time but honestly that’s so much work and with the kid’s, work and this channel. I’ve got my hands full. 😅
To be fair by the time the 300 bo was shot the carrier was already compromised by 9 shots in the same area. It may have helped contain the spalling otherwise. Still good to see. I think steel plates are best used as a back plate or in a back pack.
The shots prior we’re not where the corners were like that. But even by the first 22 round, it’s technically compromised. But it’s ability to hit so hard definitely had a big part to play in it. I’ll be doing another test one day and see what it can take with a sleeve on it in hopes they start selling them on their sight as well. And yea backup world ends, I’m going steel or what I personally use which can cost a pretty penny but is worth it.
Yeah, basically any plate, steel or ceramic, are going to have a hard time containing fragmentation if shot on the outer portion of the plate, hence why the 1.5-2 inches of the outer edge isn't a part of NIJ testing. Would recommend a kevlar sleeve for all plates, it's just good practice.
@@civilitantmindset NP man, thanks for the good testing video, always good to see everything, especially since most people will just shoot the center. Keep up the good work!
It’s not a steel test….. it’s a spalling test….. but yes. Yes, I would hope you would move, left… maybe right. Throw in a serpentine movie here and there you know. Maybe even a tuck and roll? 😂
I believe steel plates have their place. I like to use them in the backs of my "get home" bags. Something that the probability of being shot is low but doesnt hurt to have. I also have them in little handled sleeves the backs of my seats in my vehicles for the kids to be able to gab and hold.
I couldn’t agree more. I’ve come to use them for almost the same purposes. I am gonna get more of these but add guard dog sleeves to them so they will be my plates no gear only armor. More for perimeter checks kinda gear.
Glad to see that armor is doing so good. Edge shots are fairly hard for most armor to even stop. And it took what a dozen shots before you started getting failures.
@@Annon89 absolutely, I was very happy to see this. I haven’t check in a while but I hope they got sleeves in their site now. If not, easy fix. This is definitely a good buy for how cheep it is for anyone looking for protection on a budget.
That’s cool, I’ll look into those and maybe I’ll do a review on them as well. I like guard dog and what they have to offer I just don’t have those plates.
Great test, but if we are speaking about combat situation, usually you are aiming center mass. I respect that combat is unpredictable and you could get hit from different angles areas, but most are are trained for center mass. Maybe an extra spall liner would mitigate side spall?
Precisely, that’s actually what this entire video is about. Most will undoubtably shoot center mass but the unpredictability of warfare is very much possible. So on the video towards the end I speak about guard dog spalling sleeves that would protect you from any spalling whatsoever. I will more than likely have a test done one day with the spalling sleeve and show how they work and how great they are for that added layer of protection from the dangers of spalling.
That’s what’s up! I’m an HRT guy, a bit expensive but honestly we’ll worth it. I’ll definitely be getting these again but absolutely adding a spalling sleeve to the order. I like guard dog as well, I have 2 sets of sleeves on my first armor 500 plates I ever got. Sadly Tacticon didn’t exist at that time. So now I’m definitely switch and testing the ar500 next when I replace 2 more sets. I really like Tacticon a lot.
I'm pretty sure I grabbed both of these sets while they were in sale lmao maybe 120 for the steel pair and I believe 125 for the UHMWPE pair from guarddog on Opticsplanet. Tacticon just dropped their ballistic helmet too
Were you using 55 grain 556? I'd like to see 62 grain bonded soft point vs 62 grain lap vs 77 grain HPBT against armor just for shits and giggles (expensive shits and giggles lol)
I just used regular ball ammo for all because it’s mainly a video for what most people use. The next one I do I want to use armor piercing ammo. I’ll definitely grab some of that and use it for the next one for sure. 🫡🫡🫡
I appreciate that more than you know my brother! What I would suggest is depending on your budget go with whatever is going to save your life at the moment. But if you have the opportunity I would suggest getting HRTs. Super lightweight and can take multiple hits to the same area of impact. You can also wait until they have a cell watch would be about half off or a little less than half.
@@jonc4050 I’m pretty sure I make that point in this video. But yes that is why we use trauma pads. sadly taticon at that moment and maybe yet don’t sell them and they absolutely should.
great video, very detailed and informative! maybe you could try a similar test with DIY poly plates that i see going around?

Im also not Going to stand around and take several rounds of 556 or 762x39 so my steel plates will do me just fine

Yooooo bad ass intro. What song was that!!!
Much appreciated brother! It’s an upchurch song. I forget which by now I’m sorry!

I grabbed a set of these first and a spall sleeve from guard dog armor. But ultimately went for the UHMWPE plates

It definitely does not.
We’ll, not without a sleeve.
