- On a special episode of Mormon Book Reviews "Polygamist Princess" Elizabeth Phillipps returns to the program to talk with Steven Pynakker about the history of Mormon Fundamentalism and her grandpa polygamist leader Rulon Allred. Growing up in the “Group” as part of the AUB, Rulon Allred was not only Elizabeth's grandpa, but a larger-than-life leader. His legacy has carried through generations. The Allred family line goes back to the beginning of the LDS church. By following what Rulon believed to be the “Line of Authority” he became the surprising leader of a group of Mormon fundamentalists. His closeness to the mainstream LDS church and created a liminal space where polygamists can easily pass as regular mainstream members of the LDS church while practicing plural marriage. Elizabeth dives into the past with personal stories from Rulon and those closest to him.

I’m a mainstream Mormon living in Hamilton, MT which is right next to Pinesdale, a prominent AUB community. Some really great people in that community. It’s been enlightening to learn more!
Love it. Thanks for sharing!
How do you know they’re really great people?
I'm one of those people lol citizens from Hamilton and corvallis were always very kind to us. I loved that we had such good relations between communities. I've since moved to Utah.
very interesting to to learn this history that most people don't know or learned warped version of it.
I loved this one. As a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Of only 6 years. And an ex Pentecostal, and a gay man, lol.
For some reason, I find plural marriage completely fascinating! And this interview was so informative. I’m particularly interested in how it’s was handled in the main church in the in the 1900s to 1950s. So there was lots of clues in here.
Fantastic job you guys.
I am from the James allred line an my mom was friends with Rulon and a cousin she loved Rulon and was very saddened when he died.
Intimate and in-depth narrative and context - what a treat. Great episode.
Very accurate information Elizabeth. Thank you. I loved your grandmother Athleen, she was so smart and lively and highly respected.
I'm mainstream LDS in Holladay UT. This (former) Allred property is within my LDS Stake; and I drive by it often. Once sold, common residential townhouses were built over the property and surrounding acreage, retaining the Allred "white house" among the dwellings there. I suspect the current residents of that house do not know the history of it.
With all the polygamist being so independent who is the one who has the key for polygamy?
Supposed LDS D&C 132:7 ... and there is never but one on the earth at a time on whom this power and the keys of this priesthood are conferred ...
Why? Curiosity or do you wish to have them?
Isnt it funny how all these things come forth many years later. I still say BS on joseph ptacticing and preaching polygamy.
Wow! Quite the resemblance between a young Rulon and Paedon Brown!
Anne Wilde!!!
Liz is lovely and these people sound very nice, but, whoa, hold on! Can we all just agree that human beings of African ancestry are not inferior or under some imagined curse?! The racism that showed up at the end of this excellent presentation was jarring and very disappointing. Please do not “whitewash” white supremacy. 😕
I agree - it wasn’t just Africans either. They were incredibly aggressive toward Natives and other brown people, and felt they were entitled to the US land more than the Natives.
Mu sister in law was part of the Allred group.
I used to think Scientologists were gullible. Then I read about Mormons.
Apparently you haven’t read much, or you’ve read all the anti propaganda.
@@sheldonjackson383 Spoken like a true propagandist.
Salt River is in MO. Isaac converted in MO not TN.
Isaac and William left TN 1830 for MO. Hyram Smith and John Murdock visited them in 1831 then others. The Salt River Branch of the church was organized in 1832.

These people have a lot of made-up sounding names. Ervil? Verlan?
There is no such thing as ''Mormon Fundamentalism!''
