Have you thought about a 3sgte its a lightwieght four banger and can handle a decent amount of power. Im pretty sure someone makes a kit so you can mount it into a e36 chassis aswell.
Honestly engine swaps on a e36 are pointless unless it’s a 316-318 to a m50-m52 engine the weight of one those is only 400 pounds and can handle plenty of power basically stock and it’s simple plug and play basically just use e36 325 or 328 engine harness and dme and there cheap I like the iron blocks a little heavier but only by like 50 pounds but they are robust tanks
