I take it keeping the old screw driver shaft cool whilst grinding is a must as the shafts tempering would suffer and the end would bend. All said for the reference for others, I'm off to make mine now. Many thanks

I understand others doesn't have the luxury to acquire the tools especially the grinder but there is another way to do it if they have the ti.e by using a soft metal rod and use hand files to form the hook and just possibly hard wood for the handle and scrap metal for the hammer then they can heat temper the tip. This is a great tool that I found useful in all my oil seal removal jobs. Thanks for watching. Vtech
Hi, To avoid scratching the crank or shaft is to avoid sharp edges when making the tool especially the tip and sides. This tool is way better than using a normal flat head screwdriver when taking off the oil seal. Thanks for watching our channel. VARIETECH
Its only 2 dollars but you need a normal grinder and a bench grinder? Its more like a few hundred dollars to make a macgyver tool. You can buy a pro Mac version for around $ 50 and less clutter in garage.
It's $2AUD, not USD. The grinder is a tools for general purposes and must not be considered a must have tools and should not be purchased for the purpose of just making this tool. @@Varietech-AU Yes my point is that your less than 2 dollar tool is misleading. You need other tools already to make something up, so if you were to add all the materials you used it's a lot more than a few dollars.

Not everyone have the luxury of those fancy machine grinding tools…it’s actually more complex than what it seems…I think a pick would do as well as an alternative imo
I bought the machine from ALDI for $20 AUD. I think the lawnmower we are trying to fix, including oil seal, is more expensive than the tools or grinder especially when you are working on a car oil seal.
Certainly not hundreds, and for anyone who makes their own tools all the time this is a perfect fit! For that matter, you could make this without any power tools - only some files, time and patience!

Coat it with rtv,
Yea, that 90° edge will certainly scratch the shaft.
Simply wrap the hook end with black electrical tape, blue painters tape, etc.
