    This video makes me understand more what a oil seal is. (An automotive student who needs to be tested this topic 2 days later. Alex in Canada from Hong Kong.)

    always impressed that the hydraulic cylinder seals keep out the muck and dust from construction sites.

    What amazes me about rubber seal is that over a period of time the seal can wear a groove on the sealing surface to the point a new seal will still leak that's when you need a speedy sleeve to put on the worn surface so the new seal don't leak

    • @temmycandrawijaya
      @temmycandrawijaya  2 місяці тому +2

      Normally seal is the one's which wear and not the sealing surface or shaft. Because seal is made from elastic material. In a rare case, seal not have enough lubrication and not replaced on time. Seal become rigid and create a groove on the Shaft.

    • @JurekOK
      @JurekOK 2 місяці тому +3

      the way it works, is that the soft material captures very hard particles (could be a shaving of metal or speck of dust that comes from either inside or outside, what matters is that it's a hard particle) and then keeps dragging it along the shaft. So it's not the rubber that wears out the shaft but rather the contaminants trapped in the soft rubber matrix. If you kept that seal clean enough, this would not happen (as in, the ruber seal would wear out rather than the metal shaft). This is a common phenomenon in e.g. cheap brakes, where the brake is made of "soft material" but what in fact happens is that it captures stones and wears out the disk.

    Oil seals are the "unsung heroes" of all cars, machines, anything rotating.
    If they break, the replacement labour charges are 10 times higher than the cost of the seal.

      Seal position normally at the outer part of shaft. To replace a seal, we must disassembly components after the shaft to insert the seal and assembly again and this work consume much time than replace the seal part.

    5:51 I have a project where I have to seal a vertically positioned shaft from water running down all around it. The shaft will rotate and also move up and down. Is this type of seal good enough for axial movement of the shaft too? If yes, which variation do you recommend? If not, what type of seal do you think is suitable for my case?

    • @temmycandrawijaya
      @temmycandrawijaya  Рік тому +3

      Seal commonly used for rotating shaft only ( example: engine shaft ) or in and out shaft only ( example: hydraulic jack ). I believe that there is a seal to fit your requirement but maybe it's special product for special application. the parameters like rotating speed, shaft diameter, shaft span in and out, shaft speed in and out, shaft roughness, fluids properties etc. These will be acccounted for the seal specification. I suggest you to contact seal manufacturer to get more comprehensive solutions.

    • @temmycandrawijaya

      Actually seal wear, but the progress is slow depend on the seal quality. Oil leak from shaft is a sign of wear from seal.

      Generally if the shaft and the seal is kept very clean then it (still) wears out but very slowly. When dirt enters the area in between the seal and the shaft -- this could be a result of poor manufacture, installation, or mechanical shocks -- then this dirt can wear it out much faster.

      If the original is using single seal then using double seal will add friction to the shaft. Using thicker seal as long as the housing can accomodate is not a problem.
