Thank You for *actual* content. So many people talk about release and never actually show it. Excellent, to the point, easy to piece together. You rock 😀
There are a lot of bowlers who come out of the ball at 9 o’clock but their ball still doesn’t hook much because their thumb is coming out at about 9 o’clock as well. You probably have one already, but maybe a video on how to get the thumb out first and let the fingers rotate around the ball would be good for a lot of bowlers.
You mean full ball rollers?
Thumb plays a role but of course the ball plays a roll in that as well. Many bowlers who come out at 9 o'clock that have a ball that won't hook as much could easily
be throwing a ball that has a weak coverstock and/or weak core. This is especially true if they're throwing the ball into the middle of the lane (much more oil in the middle!)
Also happens quite a bit with very low rev players.
Well 9 o’clock is also for when the lanes are broken down a bit too. Trying to get that much axis rotation from fresh is already gonna be a harder backend motion or the ball going incredibly way to long to really continue through the pins. That in combination with a polished or weak ball is a bad combo.
A good demo,JR. Thanks for sharing. I knew someone will walk through the side door at some stage😄.
The best educational bowling videos on YT. Working on my rev rate/release and your tips have helped the most. Thanks JR
Thank you. So very helpful, especially the end of the video.
JR, thank you very much for your videos and the information you share. It has helped me tremendously to figure out how to hook the ball more and get more revs! Please never stop what you're doing, thanks!
Thank you! Perfect demonstration.
JR first I want to say I have the most respect for your teaching and explanation of ball release and reaction. I wish you were closer to wear I reside because I really need your help. I have been a full roller all my life and have over nine 300 games. But I shattered my ankle and heel that had to be rebuilt 5 times going on a sixth in near future. Bottom line I lost my arm swing, balance and consistency in release coming back. I have bought almost all the balls you have reviewed but it just doesn’t matter. A 2 teen avg now struggling to keep it in the 180’s. I can go on and on but I don’t want your sympathy. I need to rebuild my game with your help. First my 5 step delivery is not the same along with the arm swing which has gotten shorter. I barely get 12 mph and I have begun to hit my leg in the backswing. The release is still full roller with equipment based on pin just left of thumb. Oh I also change wrist support from a Robby to a storm mechanical device need to be a scientist to figure right position thing should be. Well if you haven’t felt asleep yet I just want to start over from beginning will you help even if I compensate you for verbal or FaceTime videos. Can or do you want to help?
Yeah I'm pretty sure he has coaching if you sign up. I also know of some other people that have coaching as In case he is too busy to get you in. Mike baker is a great coach for online learning and I've heard that Brad and Kyle have a pretty good thing going as well.
This being said you should try to learn 2 handed bowling. If you're really wanting to change everything up and you're committed. Since this style is superior in every way and generates the most speed/revs(aka what your issue is). Yeah you could probably increase your backswing, increase your approach speed, and work on your release if you want to stay the same. Yet that might not be physically possible with the injuries you mentioned. I've seen a few older bowlers switch to two hand and their power/score went up significantly after a year or two. Just my thoughts
Can’t wait to try this out in league. I’m a new bowler who has a hard time feeling the motions of my release so I’m hoping this will make me realize the differences when the balls going down the lane to see what I did wrong
As a two-hander lefty, I've been practicing coming up the back of the ball to convert most of my spares WITH a reactive ball. I prefer to shoot straight at my spares, but my targeting is still a work in progress. I was finding myself missing spares with a plastic ball because it wasn't hooking. By using reactive and coming up the back, the ball hooks just enough if I miss left of my mark, which is my usual miss. I still use plastic on corner 7s though.
I need about a day with you. Lol.
Might get me straightened out
Thank you
one thing that might be a little bit misleading is that if you come up the back, it hooks less because it picks up earlier and rolls out. if you come around the side, it hooks more overall but it will skid further down the lane
Not always
As a right handed bowler going up the back up the ball with your fingers going up into the noon position allows you to easily pick up 10 pins.
If you come out of the ball with your fingers at the 9 o'clock position you'll find the ball hooking way too much and leaving a lot of 10 pin spares.
Keep in mind that a plastic/polyurethane ball can negate this effect quite a bit, but not entirely. I can still get a plastic spare ball to hook quite a
bit in the friction at 9'oclock where at noon a plastic ball won't hook whatsoever. So for those of you leaving 10 pins a lot make sure you come
out of the ball at the noon position rather than the 9 or 10 o'clock position. ❤
I have a question about ur backswing. When holding the ball by you hip. You hold it normally, but then near the height of your backswing, you turn your hand. 2:01 is when your doing that. What benefit does that have compared to just having the hand above the ball at that point?
If you don’t open the hand up the shoulder can only go so high.
I realize this is an older video, however I just had a NU blue hammer drilled at my local pro shop.... And as I watch the videos back it seems to be rolling over the thumb hole or finger holes... I don't remember from the day whether I was wiping oil off from those areas but what do I do to correct this is it something I need to get a ball re-drilled... Or do I need to adjust my release. Now my release for the time being is not the best I certainly need to work on it.
i still don't see the release I was taught by my dad. it's pretty much a "suitcase" (or "handshake"). he taught me in the 60's when everyone had the hard rubber (Ebonite Tornado) balls. I like that release, it is easily the most comfortable and easy for me. of course, then they weren't worried about hook (they only saw it on tv with Carmen Salvino). I now have a Roto Grip Hyped Hybrid and most times use a variation on the "up the back" with a little rotation. It gets plenty of break on the local lanes. However, one of the houses is old wood and the lanes aren't oiled and maintained very well. Lots of problems there. Possible future video? thanks J.R. I was at the center in Evansville the weekend you were there (visit to the pro shop) too bad I missed you!
That’s more for beginners using house balls, you can’t bowl like that now and be a pro
You're talking about full rolling, and it's bad form in the modern game
@@iceman5117 I've been able to figure out the releases and getting my ball to hook. However, most times it either hooks too much (ball too strong?) or goes too far right and won't make it back. When I do hit the pocket (most shots) I still leave a 10 pin or a split. I much prefer the old school accuracy game. I bowl on both real wood (old and rarely oiled) and HPL (oiled, but light house shot). I did amazing last summer on wood when the owner's son was home and had a sport shot no tap league. I averaged 220+. I'm 64 and my speed is around 12.5. Not that many revs.
@@b.j.thomas8606 it's still an accuracy game, I have no idea what you're getting on about. Splitting the 8-9 carries far more often than deflection, especially with modern equipment, but this still relies on you hitting the pocket reliably. Rev dominance has been the name of the game since the first urethane balls.
No idea how you managed to carry 220 without knowing how to shift your approach or change your line. If you're coming up high you need to move left. If you're coming up light, you need to move right
On the third type of release (getting your hand rotating around the side of the ball), how can you avoid “suitcasing it”? For this have to do with insuring your thumb comes out of the ball early enough and ensuring you’re staying underneath the ball?
Yeah the thumb has to exit the ball prior to the fingers and wrist imparting the rotation 👍
It is about hand and figure placement.
I use my thumb to indicate my roll. I start my thumb at one o'clock when I throw. Then roll through it
I dont knew why you give learn on You Tube and dont see the bowler up in person would want a coach that see me weekly
WISH YOU WERE HERE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
I literally throw a backup ball for my strike shot. I can't figure out your release. I'm a righty and my ball goes left to right😢
Good video. 👍
I know this videos a little old but id love an answer, all the videos I see about generating hook tell you to stay behind the ball, and you clearly don't do that when you're coming around to create rotation, is there something that I'm missing?
He's still behind the ball, just off the the side. The is opposed to breaking your wrist and having your hand on top of the ball
If you keep your wrist cupped through the backswing and downswing, the motion comes naturally. It's not something you have to thing about doing
Beginner bowler here, can anyone explain to me briefly the implications of how you release the ball (as in this video) in relation to your PAP? I mean, isnt the PAP supposed to be a constant factor in drilling your ball no matter what layout you decide to go for? I've been hearing that your PAP is your DNA as a bowler and If i understand it's definition correctly then this video tells me that one might have more than one PAP. Someone enlighten me please.
What about the people who look like their hand is going across their body where they finish with their hand way to the left of their head? How is that release different? Always thought it looked weird…
Is it the same for two handers
Have you ever try rolling using the suitcase method?
Antiquated method. It was the most common taught in the days of rubber/plastic balls. The modern release matches up to the modern equipment. I was taught the old school way in early 80’s, but changed a lot of things as the game has over the years.
So funny how the employee always makes his appearance from the side door of the mechanical room. Is this planned?
The explanation was spot on . It is difficult to demonstrate straight up the front when you have such an open shoulder. Maybe in the future you can explain open and closed shoulder deliveries
I don't think it's planned, I think it has to do with the time of day he's shoots the video, my guess is he's shooting at about the time they oil for the evening league.
I've noticed that some pros curl their little finger under. Can you explain how this affects the balls reaction or what effect this has on the ball?
More rotation.
Some people can spin and get around the ball easier when they curl the pinky onto the ball surface
Some curl a pinky, some curl an index finger, some don't curl at all. It's mostly a comfort thing or a head thing.
I don't curl, but when I throw a big hook I keep my pinky next to my ring finger, and my index splayed out away from my middle finger. When I have to take some juice off the ball, I bring both fingers in. When I throw straight for spares, I splay out my pinky and keep my index finger in.
Realistically, I could probably do anything with my fingers in any position
Another video, except on axis tilt?
Mo monday
THE tv IS OUT OF THE SCREEN SHOT.
Good Video
HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS??
Whatsthe weight on that Thrill in the background?
We have a 14 and 15
I should have specified, sorry. The pink and yellow thrill. Not the magenta/wine
Does anyone realize the immense strength required to rev the ball like this? Normal people cannot do this, and never will be able to. You would have to weight train, or bowl fanatically, for years to have this ability. I’ve averaged in the 230’s for years and can’t do this. That’s on a house shot. I could never compete on sport conditions where you need to create area with revs and tilt, possible only by staying behind the ball through the downswing. Any normal person, no matter how hard they try, will find that their wrist will either give out, or, more likely, their hand will be forced to the side of the ball long before what is depicted here. I admire those with the strength to do this. Most of us will have to live with the low rev life we lead. Unless you want to spin the ball. That’s the other thing that could happen when attempting this, and that just looks silly.
Why do you say it’s an issue of strength?
I have bowled the same since I was 7 years old and I can't find anyone else who does it. I only bowl like once a year. So last year this person told me my hand is facing the wrong direction giving it backspin. Who else bowls with palm facing backwards?
No one, because it's a good way to injure yourself.
A great bowler always should have different hand positions to better their game 👍🏾💯
Saw you shared this on Facebook and had to check it out.
Yes i agree but it gets hard to remember which one your doing sometimes though 🤣🤣
@@heyitsjordan6379 lol true 😆
@@coreyphillips788 yes indeed. I didn’t know we were friends btw lol. What is your name on there
But when I do the 9 o clock...I'll manage to come around the ball to far...
Cause your thumb isn’t exiting prior to the rotation
But when I put my hand straight up the back I get absolutely no rotation and a flat ball roll.
You are correct the you dull ball reaction coming up the back. Making sure that thumb releases first and roll the ball off the fingers. The tilt of your hand can add or dull the finish after it hits the dry area of the lane.
Not me. I stay up the back and my ball hooks like a demon. If I really grab it ill be standing at 35 and hooking the lane lol
@@stompingpeak2043 woooooooow, lucky you
@@ianhoneycutt3858 no its the opposite of lucky. I wish I could go more straight and use the strong asym balls. It's just very difficult for me unless I throw as hard as possible and even then it's 50/50
@@stompingpeak2043 Sometimes I wish I had that problem. As a low rev high speed player I wish I could make my ball move more, but unfortunately I'm forced to be accurate to the board to strike. The way I'm forced to play leaves me no miss room
Majority of People specifically in California That Bowl for " FUN " will bowl with only 2 fingers or Thumbless
more camera angles would help and not everyone can get low to the floor
The average twice-a-week bowler probably doesn't have the talent or the time to perfect multiple releases. Why not just set your thumb at 9, 10 or 11 o'clock, keep your wrist firm but relaxed, and lift the ball with your fingers? Even this is beyond the ability of a lot of league bowlers. Unless you are convinced you are the next E. J. Tackett, keep it simple and change balls if you want more or less hook.
The idea is to become a better bowler
If this is beyond the league bowlers in your league, you may need to find a different league lol. It is pretty easy to learn, albeit a bit difficult to master. I've really had to master this as a two hander for many patterns
Hi
None of that clock stuff made any sense.
