    Our 21FBRS Flagstaff is a bit older with a slightly different 72 inch jack knife sofa but on the same platform style slide out. Our bottom cushion has a large zipper to open the bottom so we added high density 2 inch foam slabs to improve the comfort of the seat. Much better! The seat back was fine and the angle was good. We use storage hassocks for foot rests. I do like the pull out shelf idea. Not sure we have the room for it since we didn't elevate the seat like you did. Nice mods!

    • @WinesPinesandCanines

      Thank you! It has held up well except the seat cushions have gotten worse. Ours does not have that handy zipper lol! We are actually doing one more upgrade this week that we think will improve on it.
      Like the idea of storage hassocks! The wood footstools are sturdy as heck and great for extra seating but with sturdy comes the extra weight. So we might swap out. We will see where the year goes haha.

    We have an almost identical setup in our Rockwood 2109S. We wanted to convert to the RecPro double recliner. Like you, we soon found out we did not have enough depth and even if we did the slide out deck is still too high. We'd have needed a step to get up in the chairs. We found your video and that inspired me to find out if tilting the jackknife back would make it more comfortable. I put a 2 X 4 block under the front of the frame and our sofa was immediately more comfortable. My wife has also ordered some pillows and 16 inch high folding ottomans to replace the 12 inch ones we had. Thank you for the ideas!

      Hi! So the couch isn't great for an extra sleeping area as is from what we have heard. The back cushions are much taller than the seat cushions when it is laid out so awkward. But, have seen people who are bringing a guest, use a twin mattress topper over it (believe you can find one that rolls up so easy to transport) and then a sheet to hold everything together. Hope that helps! Thanks for the watch!

    Like your vid. We had a micro lite hated the couch.
    We removed couch but left the front panel, we bought two recliners from Ashley's and they fit perfectly up on the platform...we placed a board in front to tilt us back slightly and a 14 x 30" storage ottoman from Walmart fit between us for a table/storage. I like your cup holder idea. Could you remove the holder and replace it with a small swivel table by bolting it down from under the cup holder? Just a thought😉

    • @WinesPinesandCanines
      @WinesPinesandCanines  3 роки тому

      Awesome ideas :). Did you have to take the legs or bottoms off the recliners? We have a low ceiling with the cabinets on the slide (although you could take the cabinets out... always something to think about!). We thought about swivel tables - haven’t given up on that idea yet. The original cup holders can pull right out but a tight spot and we were a little nervous about tearing the fabric. Thanks for watching and safe travels!

    We recently discovered your YT videos and have learned a great deal through your experiences. We will soon be taking delivery of a new Flagstaff E-Pro (same as your GeoPro) and the first job I want to do are these sofa mods. I briefly looked at the sofa today at the dealership and could use your help on a couple issues:
    1. To remove the sofa in the first step, I can see how to get at the front sofa mount lag screws but couldn't readily see how to get access to the rear lag screws to remove them.
    2. After installing the new 1x4 wood runners for tilting the front of the sofa upward, does the rear portion of the sofa frame also sit on top of the new wood piece or back down directly on the original wood sofa platform? - see 6:51 in the video. I assume the new wood blocking was added for additional height for the sofa and better lag screw anchorage and that both the front and rear of the sofa frame sit on top of the wood blocking.
    Thanks for any help.

      Hi! Congrats on the new camper and thanks for watching - very much appreciated
      So, it is tight but there are a couple of nuts on either side at the back of the couch. Once you pull those 4 off, the back comes right off. And the wood boards run under the full frame - the washers hold it tilted up in the front. And yes - we added to give more for the screws to bite into.
      We currently have the sofa all apart - doing some modifications to the foam so will have another video upcoming in the future once we test it out. But all in, takes about 5 minutes to take apart/put back together and is much lighter than you would think! Hope ths helps!

We were very happy with everything on the unit on this first trip (although I do plan to modify the sofa). We did have one very minor rain leak at one corner of the slideout that disappeared after I brought the slide back in then back out again - maybe a loose weather seal. Awesome video! I just bought the Rubicon 1608rb, and that's how I found your channel. @WinesPinesandCanines  4 місяці тому

      Hi! Thank you and thanks for the watch! Yes - haven't met a jack knife sofa that was comfortable yet lol. We had one in our previous class c as well.
      So we haven't seen anyone replace with a futon but have seen others that have taken it out completely and put a twin size mattress for the bottom and then foam or cusions for the back. We like the sofa look of it so these mods made enough of a difference that we didn't remove it. And we don't sleep on it which is another reason that the twin mattress might work better for others.
      Since this video though, we have replaced the cushions in the seat (video upcoming) and it is quite a bit more comfortable now.

    • @WinesPinesandCanines

      Hi Charles - thanks for watching! Unfortunately, the plywood is attached to a metal frame which is the bottom of the slide (you can see that at about the 2:35 minute mark). So to replace the sofa, whatever was purchased would have to sit on that platform. Thank you for watching! We used 3” long hinges from Lowe’s/Home Depot. But we did cut a small 4x4 piece of 1/4” plywood to pad out the back a little as the skirt board is thin. That just gives a little extra for the screw to “bite” into. I think we went with screws that came with the hinges but basically just made sure they were long enough to go through the plywood piece we added and then into the skirt board but not too long that they would poke through.

    Linda, Troy & Desi.... It's funny that you should release this video on the couch right now. One of my biggest complaints of the FBS is that couch and being able to sit comfortably and eat, watch TV or even read. The table that comes with the trailer is cumbersome and I removed it in favor of two small folding trays. ("Every ounce counts") In fact, I have been considering selling the FBS in favor of the FD. But your modifications intrigue me. Do you remember the diameter size of the hex head screw that holds the couch in position? It looks like a 1/4". I know you replaced the thermostat. Was that relatively simple DIY project?

    • @WinesPinesandCanines
      @WinesPinesandCanines  3 роки тому

      Hi Glen! We completely agree - one of the reasons we bought the FBS was the couch and it looked and felt so comfortable when it was sitting at the dealer lol. These changes definitely help - doesn't make it as comfortable as my theater seating at home but definitely better! I was seriously considering taking it out and having something custom made but glad Troy talked me down to changing the way it tilts first. $10 was definitely cheaper! And we also dislike the table - so bulky and heavy. It now sits in our garage. The screw we took out of the couch - Troy used a 10mm socket but 3/8" would have worked as well. Of course, this is assuming that Rockwood used the same from trailer to trailer!
      The thermostat was an easy change over - I think it took less than 10 minutes and I love that change. Being able to tell what the actual temperature in the camper is vs guessing on that sliding thermostat is great. Not sure why they can't just invest the few extra dollars in a digital one. Thanks for watching!

      @@WinesPinesandCanines Linda et al, I agree on the thermostat. But as Ford 80's motto said, "Every ounce counts". I guess in the RV business, "every penny counts". Plus, if I remember correctly, RV manufacturers are at the mercy of their supplies.
      The table wasn't a complete bust. I use it as a side-board in my office. Very sturdy. It can accommodate a printer, scanner... and a table lamp.
      RE: the 19FD (versus 19FDS), I am seriously considering the upgrade for a few factors. One being the trailer and tongue weight is lighter. Two being the lack of a slide is one less thing to fail or leak (not that that's happened to me). Three the 19FDS (slide version) will not allow the Murphy bed to lower and has NO gas oven. Four, the 2021 19FD has the bigger sink and high faucet, and can come with the 12 volt fridge and 190 watt hard solar panel. And finally, the "couch" in the 19FD has arm rests on either side, and a fold down arm rest in the center (which has two cup holders) and it has the elevating foot rests. Don't get me wrong, I really like the FBS, but that's too many model year changes to ignore. I look forward to your next video. But I live just north of you in Maryland, and I have no plans to go to the mountains until after May. Be safe. Happy travels.

      Glen - completely agree on the new models! We did think about moving up to the 2021.5 because of the 12V fridge and some of the other changes but put on hold for now. And the FD really does have some nice features. Having a dinette and a couch is nice. For us, the full bed is one of the reasons we went with the FBS. If you decide to switch over to the FD let us know. We have seen a bunch of mods talked about online!

      @@WinesPinesandCanines I remember you modified the bed to make it larger. Something that could not happen with the FD or FDS. Also, I doubt the couch tilt modification would be possible since the Murphy bed lays down on the jack-knife couch. (Unless you enjoy having your feet slightly elevated, or sleeping in reverse.) Also, I like the slide out tray you created. I will keep you posted.

    The collapsible stool idea is a decent one. Instead of adding legs to it which means maybe no longer folding down flat I would leave as is and add a cushion inside that pulls out and is stiff enough to set on top of the stool and gives you 3-6 " of height that's comfortable for your legs depending on what you need. The taller ones you made which I love your design are too high for my legs. I must be slightly lower than the seat for some reason or my legs behind my knees hyper stretch & I'm in pain for several days. And especially if one of our pets decides to make my legs their comfy seat too. You can fold the ottomans. Remove the covered cushion and store in our case along side our sofa or tucked under our sofa. Our jackknife sofa has pretty much full storage box under it and really difficult to get into it. I like your piano like hinges and flip up storage panel. I intend to do the reverse with ours. I intend to cut our 72" length of front skirt box in two. Leaving the side ours has a heat vent coming out of. This heat vent does not cause much loss inside the box but does take up a good 20 inch slice out of the front box. Rather than move the vent over and risk too much stress on the aluminum vent hose I thought I'd just leave as designed and cut 1.5 inches on the other side cutting the board into 2. Our skirt also is fabric covered. No padding however. So I will recover in the new upholstery cloth a marine coated canvas I bought 20 yards of. Plenty to reupholster the sofa, dinette cushions all the skirting and fabric trim and also make a few storage pockets similar to shoe storage pockets that you see that hang over doors. I've seen that done to handle shoes or other products in other DIY projects for Sofas. I'm not going to go over board and of course none for the heat vent area leaving plenty of room on either side to insure nothing gets in the way of the heat. I think there is a wonderful space on the other side of the vent however to put a wide slender envelope pocket that can hold a road atlas ro maps or even just a magazine or rwo. Keep it slim and simple and tight to the board so to speak. I'm thinking of adding a flap to keep what ever we do store there clean. I found your Video today because I was searching how to remove a jack knife sofa from an RV. Yeah...yours is different as it works on a raised platform and much easier to undo bolts and remove. Ours has an iron frame and base and is very heavy and bolts right into the floor. We are not sure if we have to have someone under the RV to catch the bolts or if they are frozen as in welded in place and you only run the nuts. And it will require 2 people to battle removal for sure. But I need to remove for 3 reasons. One to reupholster, The seats not so much the backs need to be refilled with better solid not so soft foam. I have enough materials on hand to tackle that. Also need to remove carpet that was not removed when past owners put in hard flooring in main floor but not under cabinets or cubbies or the sofa. And finally two of the RV windows leaked and I repaired walls and flooring on other side and there is signs of some leaking on this sofa side window too. Windows were cut too large on the RV for the actual size of the window. They barely hide the light around the upper area due to this. The original round rubber seal with wee bit of self adhesive material and light bead of failed silicone seal around edges were doomed to fail from Day one the RV rolled out of the manufactures warehouse. Anyway past owners had no idea how to fix or enough interest in tackling it. I know nothing and it's the first RV I've owned and my learning curve has been very steep I love your foot stools though and plan to make two. I happen to have two of these stools I bought for tent camping then never used. Perfect to play with to figure out how to make the cushion for the top and add a handle to pull out of the box. I have enough room at end of sofa behind the passengers seat to place both boxes side by side. I'm debating adding wheels using your suggestion to add boards to screw in short legs/feet to do that or stay with the keep m options open and skip wheels just let me collapse and store all under the sofa box or made up on side or between the dinette foot bay when table is removed or set down as a bed. I will use dinette bay for guests but otherwise I plan to remove the table to store my folding bike in it's case and my inflatable sea kayak also in it's lovely canvas case. Two bikes & two kayaks if my husband decides to join me. He's a stay at home and I'm the camper. Fifty one years married and it works for us. Anyway I've run across several of your well done videos and advise and love them all. Now off to find out what to expect on how to remove those bolts that go into the floor itself. YIKES. Hugs to Desi....

      Hi! First - apologize for taking a bit to get back to you! And second - thank you for taking the time to give us so many tips and ideas!
      Thanks for the idea on the footstools. With ours, the height is a little too high for us also. We are looking at some ways to make them a bit lighter and still sturdy and we plan to make them a bit lower at the same time. The cushion is a great idea for someone that does want to be able to fold them up.
      Really like the idea of splitting the board underneath into two. We had thought about that but as of yet, don't want to reupholster as everything is still in good condition. But, if the time comes - definitely going to do. Opening one side or the other is much easier!
      We had an older Class C prior to this camper and it also had a jackknife sofa that attached to the floor with a metal base. We had our fresh water tank under it. We did take it apart and had the sofa reupholstered along with the front piece. It did take two of us but don't remember it being too difficult. Just a bunch of bolts to undo. But tight space so two people was definitely needed! (by this time you maybe have done this? Curious how it went!)
      Sorry about the leaking - in that same Class C, when we bought it, the windows up front in the cab over were leaking. Definitely a pain but once fixed, the camper held up great for the two additional years we owned it.
      Congrats on 51 years!! That is amazing!!!!
      Thanks for watching - we really appreciate!

      Congrats on the new camper! Its crazy how small changes can make such a difference on the couch. It isn't "residential comfy couch at home" level but much better!
      So for over the bed, we found some baskets at The Container Store. We like them as we can fit 5 up there and it fills the space plus the colors and design matched the camper almost perfectly. I'm a single mom we are on a really really tight budget but we have some major issues with our jackknife mainly because that's the place where my teenage daughter sits to watch TV, Etc. It's our only seating if a friend comes over. The table in our rig was taken out and we're glad for that but ours is like sitting on bare bars I tell you. I don't know how to fix that part. We don't have cushions. Just a big, one piece, built in connected couch cushion. We've already figured what to do for the bed we pull it out and we put a blow-up mattress on it and that has worked well for my daughter's friend that comes to us from her group home for holidays. But as far as just having a place to sit down it's horrible. Do you have any ideas just the cheapest. Like my daughter was wondering if we could add a pillow top from a bed on top of that would that help? It has a cute little cover, it's a one piece that just goes over the whole thing but I just wish it could be more comfy. It doesn't feel like it pushes us forward so we don't worry about that. We have footstools not too worried about armrests or cup holders but mainly just not wanting to sit on bars anymore any ideas would be welcome.

      Hi - sorry it has taken a bit to get back you! Very much appreciate the comment and watch! So, is there anyway for you to get underneath - can you take it off?
      My thought would be to flip it over and stuff as much foam as you can between what cushioning is already there and the bar. We have found much of the discomfort comes from not enough padding in the seat so you easily feel that bar. Hope that helps some!
      Great idea on the blow up mattress! Thanks for watching!

    As a single, I'd get rid of that couch entirely and put in a tall counter top and a comfy bar-stool. There would be room for shelves and storage underneath and above. Good thinking! The only problem in this camper is the bottom of the couch sits directly on the slide (which is approx a foot off the floor). So you can't slide a bar stool out of the way. Also the reason we couldn't do the theater seats!

    I don't want to permanently tilt ours back as then seems like it would be uncomfortable if one DID flatten it for a bed. This is where my idea for the rocker springs came in. If one mounted wood underneath to platform and wood to bottom of sofa, could springs be mounted between?? We have already hi get the access panel on the front of ours! I am wondering about (once we raise it slightly, making some kind of footrest that can slide under the seat (not using drawer glides, just slde in) and hinged legs to act as reclinereaque foot rests. We don't really want additional foot stools in the camper. But I'm mulling over some ideas....

    • @WinesPinesandCanines
      @WinesPinesandCanines  3 роки тому

      Hi Amy! So the couch is definitely not the comfiest lol. The back cushions are so much higher that most people have put a foam pad on it to help if someone is sleeping there. Tilting it actually helps as it keeps that side a little higher so harder to roll off.
      The springs are an intriguing idea - would love to know how that works if you do the mod!
      For the footrests - we had somewhat the same thought. But when the slide is out, we only have about 6” from the front to the wheel well (facing the couch on the left side). The other side is about 10”. So, I put that mod on the back burner but every once in a while I revisit to see if we can come up with a workable plan lol. So again - would love to know if you do this!
